REVIEW
Only the Children by S.A. Dunphy
DI Tessa Burns #2
Wonderful addition to an excellent series ~ Can’t wait to see what happens next!
What I liked:
* The seamless transition from the first to second book
* Tessa Burns: parents murdered when she was young, spent years in the child-care system, ex-military, strong, lethal, dedicated, wise, mature, good friend, intriguing, good people skills, team player * Danny Murphy: lost his parents when young, raised in foster system, usually a gentle giant , quiet but also deadly, physically fit, caring, protective * Maggie Doolan: family liaison officer, psychology and sociology degrees, qualified therapist, has cerebral palsy, friends with Tessa since childhood * Pavlov: Maggie’s partner, support dog, a small black-and-white terrier-mix, bright, calming presence, protective
* The three children in potential peril –  really hope they land in a soft spot
* Jim Shiels: Chief Officer in Coast Guard, intelligent, attractive, divorced, attracted to Tessa, potential love interest, hope to see more of him
* Eric Stafford: fixer for big shopping company, silent but deadly, saved the day a few times, wonder if he will show up again
* Being able to hate the bad guys…and there were plenty to hate
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing * The police procedural aspects and how the case unfolded * That I became invested in the story and cared about the outcome * The hook at the end that introduces the next book * All of it and too many things to list every one of them
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about the life the Merrow must have lived
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

BLURB
The little girl stares up at Tessa, trembling so hard her whole body shakes. Her brothers stand clutching her hands, both pale with shock. ‘They told us not to speak,’ she finally whispers. But the terror in her tear-filled eyes tells Tessa all she needs to know…
When a cargo ship runs aground off the Irish coast, the police are horrified to find the captain dead at the helm, the crew missing, and three little red-haired children, terrified but unharmed, locked in the galley kitchen. As an expert detective running a child-centred taskforce, Detective Tessa Burns is called in to lead the case. Despite Tessa’s best efforts, the children won’t reveal a thing – not even their own names. Slowly gaining their trust, Tessa uncovers a deadly secret about their past – and the mystery of their missing parents’ whereabouts – that turns everything she thought she knew on its head. But just as it seems she’s cracked the case, Tessa’s team is attacked one dark night, and the youngest boy is kidnapped yet again. It’s clear the children are still in terrible danger. And when another senseless killing sends shockwaves through her team, Tessa realises the murderer is someone much closer to home than they could have ever imagined. Will she be able to uncover the truth in time, or will it be too late for her, and, most devastating of all, for the children…? A totally unputdownable Irish police procedural with jaw-dropping twists. Perfect for fans of Patricia Gibney, Lisa Regan and Angela Marsons.

Her Child's Cry by S. A. Dunphy (Boyle & Keneally Book 3)
Book Description: ‘I just want my little girl back. She’s so little, she needs her mummy. And she doesn’t even have her panda bear with her. Find her, please find her, before it’s too late.’
Little Rosie Blake has been taken. Since going missing from the hospital where she was being treated for cancer, Rosie’s distraught parents haven’t heard a word. And time is swiftly running out. They have to find her, and right away, because Rosie can only survive for ten days without her medication. With the police unable to find any leads at all, criminal behaviourist Jessie Boyle and her team are brought in to help. Who would be so evil as to steal a sick child? Narrowing down on a suspect, Jessie quickly moves to arrest them, only to discover the suspect’s dead body instead... And with no Rosie in sight, the case becomes even more desperate. Who killed their chief suspect, and where is Rosie now? And is Rosie’s disappearance linked to the sudden revival of Dublin’s Hellfire Club, an ancient and terrifying cult obsessed with death and human sacrifice? As the race to find Rosie intensifies, her heartbroken parents know their little girl’s time is running out. The clock is ticking, but Jessie clings on to the hope of finding her safe. Then her search leads her to Ireland’s remote mountains... Will Jessie be able to survive the deadly threat that awaits her, rescue Rosie, and get her back to safety, before it’s too late?
My Review (5*) This is one of those books that you start and then you are at 40% and you didn't realize time passed as you were lost in the pages. All the books in this series are very good but this one is off chart as it's enthralling, gripping, with the right level of creepiness and horror. There's always an element of Irish folklore or history at the core of the story and in this case, it was some historical facts of Dublin history. It was fascinating to read about them and i learned something new. There's often a sense of dread in this story, an unknown menace and I felt it more in this book than in the other. This is a series that balances elements of horror and thriller and makes them work very well The story is fast paced and it must be fast paced as it talks about a race to save a child from her kidnapper. This is just a part as there's a lot more. The twists and the solution were unexpected and the author surprised me till the last page. Now I must read the next story as the last page was a huge surprise. I strongly recommend this book. it can be read as a standalone but it's better to read the rest of the series. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

REVIEW
Little Witness by S.A. Dunphy
DI Tessa Burns #1
Excellent introduction to a new series that captured my interest from page one and provided the perfect introduction to a new team that will work together to solve cases involving children and/or vulnerable adults.
What I liked: * Tessa Burns: parents murdered when she was young, spent years in the child-care system, ex-military, has nightmares, survivor, strong, lethal, dedicated, wise, mature, good friend, intriguing, good people skills, team player and egalitarian leader
* Danny Murphy: lost his parents when young, raised in foster system, has anger management issues but can be a gentle giant, has great potential, sees Tessa as a mentor, interested to see how his character develops
* Maggie Doolan: family liaison officer, psychology and sociology degrees, qualified therapist, teaches wheelchair self defense classes, has cerebral palsy, friends with Tessa since childhood
* Pavlov: Maggie’s partner, a small black-and-white terrier-mix, bright, calming presence, protective, great addition to the character list
* Aisling Connolly: strong, resilient, survivor, quick thinking, parents disappeared
* Starting the series with book one, finding out how Tessa is put in charge of the team and why, and getting to see the team begin to work together
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The police procedural aspects and how the case unfolded
* That I became invested in the story and cared about the outcome
* The hook at the end that introduces the next book
* All of it and too many things to list every one of them
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
Did I enjoy this book? Yes

They came in the dark. They took her parents. And now she is the only one who can save them. Hidden away in an isolated cabin on the edge of her farm, seven-year-old Aisling Connolly shivers as the cold night air whistles through her thin jacket. It’s been two days since the men came, since her mammy told her to run like she’d never run before, to not look back. She hasn’t seen her parents since. And she’s terrified. But when Aisling is finally found by the police, she knows instinctively she can trust Detective Tessa Burns. A former child-witness herself, Tessa understands what Aisling has been through, and that Aisling must remember everything she can about that terrible, dark night if she’s to save her parents. Something Tessa was unable to do for her own parents all those years ago. As the little girl slowly starts to open up, Tessa uncovers much more than she’d bargained for – another murder, clearly a horrific warning to Aisling not to speak. But time is running out, and any hope of finding Aisling’s parents alive is rapidly fading. And Tessa must do everything in her power to ensure the little girl isn’t next… An utterly gripping Irish police procedural filled with unexpected twists. Perfect for fans of Peter May, Lisa Regan, and Patricia Gibney.

REVIEW
Lost Graves by S.A. Dunphy
Boyle & Keneally #2
Gripping, gritty, and gruesome – grabbed my attention on page one and never let me go.
The thought going through my head…maybe a song…or that creepy movie…and now this book…was…don’t go into the woods today…and something about a big surprise…
This is a series I am glad I came in on book one and look forward to reading for many books to come. Book one in the series introduced me to four characters that made me sit up and pay attention wanting to get to know them all better. Book two gave me a few insights into how the new investigation team put together in the first book are doing, reaffirmed that I like them and want to get to know each better as the series progresses.
 What I liked:
* The setting…creepy woods in Ireland
* The writing…brisk, short, intense chapters that pulled me in and moved me quickly through the story
* The four main characters that made an impression in book one continue to be people to admire
* Jessie Boyle: criminal behaviorist, focused, professional, has suffered great loss, strong, team player, leader, competent, skilled, someone I want to get to know better and wouldn’t mind having as a friend
* Seamus Keneally: detective, partner to Jessie, takes on more of the police aspects in the story, strong, skilled, professional, team player, forceful, works well with Jessie and Terry
* Terry Kehoe: historian, genealogist, tech wizard-guru, third member of the team, small but mighty, provides great support in more ways than one
* Dawn Wilson: Irish Police Commissioner recently appointed, Jessie’s best friend from childhood, strong, determined, focused, professional, takes no guff, there for the team she created
* The way the team works together, steps in, reads one another easily, takes on jobs without having to be told to do so, their interactions
* The sense that the team is a tightly knit unit that will only become stronger over time
* Joe and Finbar Kennan and their dog Rufus: Travelers caught up in this story – in more ways than one – that their part in the story informed me a bit and made me interested in googling Travelers. I wouldn’t mind seeing them again in aa future book of the series
* The tie-in to the local myths and the way it played into the story
* Abhartach: see above…big part of the story and interesting take on a common myth/legend
* That it was believable…even when it made me angry-sad
* The tie-in, though slight, to the first book’s serial killer – imagine s/he will show up again later
* That I had empathy for the killer
* That there were surprises throughout the story
 What I didn’t like:
* Exactly what I was meant not to like: whoever and whatever they might be.
* Knowing that evil exists in the world and some of it is similar to what was in this book…
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely…as soon as I can!

     BOOK DESCRIPTION:
The only sound in the forest was the wind through the branches; the only light came from the campfire. Jessie stood up, suddenly gripped by a powerful sense of dread. There was something – someone – beyond the darkness, through the trees… When single father Joe Keenan and his young son Finbar make camp for the night in the ancient forest of Leitrim, little do they imagine their rural escape is about to turn into a nightmare. For deep in the woods they find a corpse… As the remains of dozens more victims are uncovered by police, it becomes clear this is the burial site of a serial killer who has obviously been active, unnoticed, for years. Arrested for the murders, while his beloved son is sent into care, Joe pleads his innocence to no avail. But criminal behaviourist Jessie Boyle is convinced the killer is still out there. Determined to reunite Joe and his son, Jessie’s investigation turns towards the local community. Who knows the shadowy depths of the forest well enough to hide not just one, but many bodies? Then someone else goes missing, and the situation takes a terrifying turn: it’s clear the killer is escalating their gruesome spree. Forced to enter the woods alone to save a life, Jessie runs from a killer so skilled at hiding and so clever at hunting, it will take every ounce of her strength to make it out alive… A gripping, nail-biting crime thriller that will have you hooked from the first page to the final line. Fans of Patricia Gibney, Lisa Gardner and Lisa Regan will not want to miss this.

REVIEW
Bring Her Home by S.A. Dunphy
Boyle & Keneally #1
A story to be savored…not eaten in one bite. In the first pages I was caught in the web the author began to weave wondering who the killer was and what he was up to. Why had he chosen to kill the man we were first told about and how would that killing impact the woman who will be one of the lead characters in a new series that I really want to read more of. I am thrilled to have come into this series in the first book, meet the characters, and be able to follow them as they grow as a team and solve more cases.
What I liked: * Jessie Boyle: Human behaviorist with over twenty years of experience working with the London Metropolitan Police, lost her partner to a serial killer, resigned, called to assist a friend, intelligent, skilled at what she does, survivor, leader, friend, team player, and a woman I want to learn a lot more about.
* Seamus Keneally: detective, “hero”, talkative, fit, intelligent, humorous, son with great mother, team player, humble, survivor, someone I am eager to learn more about as the series progresses.
* Terri Kehoe: small but mighty, grew up in care, historian, genealogy wiz, computer savvy, researcher, assists on police cases, survivor, quiet, observant, someone that slowly emerges as a force to be reckoned with. I want to know more about her, too.
* Dawn Wilson: police commissioner, Jessie’s friend, intelligent, capable, needs to be in charge and keep her hand in, capable, skilled, hope to hear more about her in future books.
* The way characters were developed over the story, the way they came together as a team, and that I felt invested in them and in their story.
* The historical element that uses history on using ogham markings on stone to give weight to the killings while also teaching a bit of history.
* The introduction to and visit with some creepy killers that may show up again in future books.
* That we know there is at least one killer still out there to be found
* The way some gang-mafia types were brought into the story and how they were presented as bad but not all bad.
* The mythology tied into some of the killings
* The location – Ireland is a place I have always wanted to visit – Had never heard of “The Reeks”
* That I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the characters and would love to have them as friends.
 What I didn’t like:
* The murderers and what they did
* Knowing that people are as twisted, ruthless, and evil as some in this story
* Having to wait for book two
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.

She had taken only one step towards the hotel when she heard the car door opening, and then something had her by the shoulders in a grip like steel. Penny tried to fight, but it was no good. The last thing she heard as consciousness drifted away was the whisper of a familiar song… On a cold night in October a pretty, blonde girl named Penny O’Dwyer is snatched from the quiet main street of a small, coastal town in the west of Ireland. No one saw anything, and a desperate search leads nowhere… Until her abductor sends a video declaring Penny only has ten days to live and a deadly countdown begins. Criminal behaviourist Jessie Boyle hoped never to work a case in Ireland again. But when her career in London is cut short by a brutal tragedy, she returns to her homeland to grieve – only for her oldest friend to call in a long overdue debt. ‘Help us catch this monster and bring Penny home. We need you, Jessie.’ Throwing herself into the investigation, Jessie makes a chilling discovery: Penny wasn’t the first girl to be taken. As her team find more missing women, she becomes convinced that a serial killer has been hiding in plain sight for years. Nothing seems to tie the victims together, until Jessie realises that that each abduction site is linked to the old Irish myths she read as a child. Time is running out for Penny, and Jessie’s only hope is to understand the killer’s twisted logic. But he is closer than she imagined… and Jessie is next in his sights. Will she risk everything to save an innocent life? A totally breathtaking and chilling crime thriller that will keep you gripped to the very last page, perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, A.J. Rivers, Tana French and Lisa Gardner.

Lost Graves by S.A. Dunphy (Boyle & Keneally #2)
My Review (5*) There are two ways you can review this book: one is very short and to the point, the other one a bit verbose but this is a blog tour and we must be a bit verbose. The first reviews is the following: READ IT! It's one of those books you start and won't put down, highly entertaining and gripping. No marketing buzz, I mean it as I love this series and read this book in one setting. The second one is a bit more articulate and there are more words. I requested the arc of the first instalment following my gut feeling, something told it was going to be an exciting read. It was an exciting read, loved it. I requested this arc hoping it was up to the previous story and it was even better. It's a riveting and highly entertaining mix of police procedural and thriller with some folk horror in the mix. There's a mythical monster that could be real or a legend, there's a lot of unidentified corpse, and there's a creepy and fascinating forest. I assume that S.A. Dunphy works for VisitIreland as the description of the forest made me wish I could visit this great place which is full of mystery, history, and life. Jessie, Seamus, Terri, and Dawn are great characters, and the strength of the team is what makes them solve cases and survive I like to learn something about the Travellers and liked how they are represented as human being with virtues and defects. The plot is full of twists, and I couldn't guess what was going to happen. The solution surprised me and was satisfying. I can't wait to read the next story; this one is highly recommended. Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
