So you’d like to try romance
If you’re interested in reading romance or would just like to know a bit more about the genre by reading books instead of going off of whatever nonsense you’ve heard about it, here’s a list grouped by arbitrary categories that I made up as I went.
“I have a shelf of chick lit, but I just don’t know where to start with those books.”
Congrats! If you read “chick lit,” then you’ve probably already read romance because the generally agreed upon definition of a romance novel is a story that 1. centers on a love story and 2. has an emotionally satisfying ending. Lots of chick lit fits those two rules. It’s all just marketing.
Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie
Roomies by Christina Lauren
The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
Pretty much anything with a colorful illustrated cover featuring two people: Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston; Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert; No Judgments by Meg Cabot; etc.
“I have a shelf of historical fiction and historical romance is such a natural fit for me it’s really a wonder that I haven’t read any of it yet.”
Three Weeks with Lady X by Eloisa James
Diary of an Accidental Wallflower by Jennifer McQuiston
A Lady by Midnight by Tessa Dare
One Night in London by Caroline Linden
The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley
“Listen, if I’m going to read romance, I want to read the classics.”
I’m listing the classics that I like because it’s my list.
Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas (2006)
Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey (1990)
Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn (2002)
Mackenzie’s Mountain by Linda Howard (1989)
Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale (1992)
Ransom by Julie Garwood (1999)
It Had to Be You by Susan Elizabeth Phillips (1994)
Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase (1995)
Sea Swept by Nora Roberts (1998), Vision in White by Nora Roberts (2009), anything you want by Nora Roberts, including Naked in Death by J.D. Robb (who is Nora Roberts) (1995)
“You’re giving me too much REALITY. Where’s the fantasy?!”
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh
The Magpie Lord by K.J. Charles
Dark Lover by J.R. Ward
No Rest for the Wicked by Kresley Cole
“No, no, no, that’s all too far-fetched for me. I want to read about things that could really happen.”
Hard Hitter by Sarina Bowen
Something About You by Julie James
Act Like It by Lucy Parker
“No! I’ve spent years hearing about all the weird stuff in romance novels! Give me your wildest shenanigans or give me nothing!”
Warrior’s Woman and Keeper of the Heart by Johanna Lindsey (Actually, just read any old-school Lindsey.)
The Red Hot Cajun by Sandra Hill
I listed Dark Lover by J.R. Ward above. Keep reading the Black Dagger Brotherhood series if you want to go from the shallow end to the deep end and beyond.
Iron Cowboy by Diana Palmer -- or just read this review on Smart Bitches Trashy Books.
Pregnesia by Carla Cassidy -- or just read this review on Smart Bitches Trashy Books.
“Okay, now I’m really pissed off because I knew romance had a ‘diversity problem’ and you didn’t include enough writers of color or diverse characters or people who aren’t straight for me.”
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
Wrong to Need You by Alisha Rai
A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole
Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins
A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev
Rafe: A Buff Male Nanny by Rebekah Weatherspoon
A Seditious Affair by K.J. Charles
Trade Me by Courtney Milan
The Ruin of a Rake by Cat Sebastian
“I’m a dedicated romance reader, you didn’t include my favorite author or favorite book, and now I’m annoyed.”
Slightly Dangerous by Mary Balogh
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean
A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux
The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig
Irresistible Forces by Brenda Jackson
Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath
Lucky in Love by Jill Shalvis
Beard Science by Penny Reid
Ravishing the Heiress by Sherry Thomas
The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran
Virgin River by Robyn Carr
Motorcycle Man by Kristen Ashley
Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan
Look, just imagine I included your favorite here, okay?
“Wait, I know of some pretty big novelists who aren’t on this list. Why aren’t you recommending them?”
Nicholas Sparks is a jerk about the romance genre, even though romance readers are the reason he’s rich. Screw him.
Same for Diana Gabaldon.
Danielle Steele doesn’t write romance novels.
Everyone knows about Jane Austen.
Georgette Heyer was an anti-Semitic trash person.
That about covers it. Happy reading!

"So, Mr. Tennyson... Would you like to share your chili cheese fries in exchange for a kiss, or shall I have to buy my own?" Y/N leaned towards Ben, who was in the middle of having a fry in mid-air between his lips. He put it down. "Depends. Do I get all the kisses I want?"
"Thrown in your Mr. Smoothy and we have a deal." Y/N told him.
"Deal." Ben said.

Return of Ben content?
"Listen, Kevin. I'm willing to ignore what you and Gwen do or don't do with your sex lives, but don't think you can barge into mine and Ben's sex life." Y/N told the older boy as he was in his underwear with a chain necklace around his neck.
He reached for his jeans and smiled at Y/N. "If you didn't want me to see you and Ben wrestling on the floor in sweaty workout clothes and grinding dicks together like sluts, then lock the door next time."
"It was locked. You broke the door on purpose."

"Dude! Who's the hot naked dude on fire!?" Cody asked. In the doorway of Cody's house, a naked man stands in the door frame. He's covered head to toe in fire but doesn't seem to be affecting him in the slightest. His eyes burn with an orange hue color while the most enormous cock that Cody and Y/N have ever seen, twitched in the air. Fire licks all around his body as he slowly enters the house as Y/N and Cody back up.
"Parrish? Sheriff Parrish?" Y/N asked.
"Sheriff? Dude, you know a Sheriff?"
"He's the Sheriff in Beacon Hills. I can only assume he's here for two reasons." Y/N said.
"Which are?" Cody gulped.
"He's either here to kill us, or fuck us. I'm hoping it's the former. He's possessed by a Hellhound." Y/N explains as they back towards the living room, Parrish following their every step.
"Why would he want that?" Cody says as Y/N waved a hand and couch moved between them and Parrish, but the Hellhound burned it up with a single touch. "Submit."
"Like hell. Why is he doing this?" Cody asked.
"Hellhounds have a confusing relationship with witches. It's hard to explain at the moment. We need to get out of here." Parrish reached out a flaming hand towards Cody, and before he could grab the mortal boy, Y/N flicks his wrists, and Parrish froze in place.
Cody looks shocked as the flaming man stopped his advancements on them. It's like someone pressed pause on a big TV remote. The flaming man had stopped, but his frozen expression was enough to make Cody shiver.
"How did you do that?"
"I'm a good witch, remember? I put up both hands, and bad things tend to freeze."
"For how long?"
"Not very. Let's go before Parrish decides to make us ride that pitchfork all the way to hell." Y/N grabs Cody's hand, and they run for the doorway and into the night as the Hellhound unfreezes and roars, following the witch, and his human pet.

Stefan: “Should we be worried?”
Y/N: “About what?”
Stefan: “That our son is in love with a Ripper.”
Y/N: *Smiles* “Well, I guess you could say that history’s repeating itself. A young witch-vampire in love with an older vampire.”
Stefan: “Let’s not forget the Demigod they're so fond of.”

Wrestling with Black Eyes
Josie Saltzman & Uncle Male reader. Male Reader x Stefan Salvatore
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A microphone descended down from the ceiling as the Emcee, whose face was hidden beneath a red cape as he brought it to his lips and announced it to the students of the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted. There was cheering and clapping from the students, each in a section for Vampires, Witches, and Werewolves, respectively.
“Vampires, witches and werewolves. Children of all ages.” The Emcee pulled his hood back to reveal that it was the Necromancer. “It's the event we've all been waiting for. The... Merge!” The students quickly booed as they found out what this event was really about.
“I thought that guy was dead,” a student said.
The Necromancer moved to his right as he removed his cape and threw it into the crowd of booing students. “Yeah, you like the taste of cape? Eat that! Yeah!” The Necromancer never felt so alive, so to speak. He was gonna watch as Josie Saltzman Siphoned her sister into oblivion. “In the crimson corner and robe, hailing from Mystic Falls, Virginia, the former Queen of Codependency, the reigning Sultan of Siphon, Josie Saltzman!”
The front doors opened up and there was a spotlight with smoke and intro music, like a wrestling event as it revealed Josie, the dark version model of her as she strutted down towards the ring as confetti fell all around her. People were shocked and some booed her, while others clapped out of fear of what this new version of Josie would do to them if they didn’t. Josie smirked as her witch followers held open the ring ropes for her as she turned and removed her red cloak from her body as got inside the ring, eagerly awaiting her sister, Lizzie.
She turned to the Necromancer and smirked. “You are one hell of a hype man.”
“Houdini said the same thing,” the Necromancer said. “And in the blue corner, the Queen of Mean, the Blonde Banshee, She Who Is About to Be Siphoned into Oblivion, your very own... Elizabeth Saltzman!”
The crowd cheered when they heard Lizzie’s name. The student body was hoping she could save them from Josie’s wrath. The spotlight shined on the entrance, everyone expecting the blonde haired girl to walk through those doors. All the students held their breath in anticipation and waited, but no one came through the doors as Josie chuckled. She knew her sister wouldn’t show up. She was too much of a coward. The weaker of the two of them. Always worried about saving her own ass.
The music stopped as the Necromancer handed Dark Josie the mic. She brought it to her red lips as she smiled and announced. “Well, my selfish sister didn't show up. Who am I gonna kill?” Her voice boomed across the room as the students stared at her nervously. She glanced around the room, meeting the eyes of her fellow classmates.
“Should it be... Ooh... ... vampires?” Josie asked. She pointed to the witch students. “Maybe witches? How about some werewolves?”
The doors flew right open and it wasn't Lizzie Saltzman that came through those doors. Instead, it was Y/N Salvatore, his husband Stefan, and their son, Alex. Dark Josie turned her head in surprise as the other students were just as shocked to see the legendary witch-vampire and one of the two Salvatore brothers, whose estate was turned into a school.
Y/N walked past Josie’s witches, with Stefan and Alex right behind him as he pulled himself up to the outside of the ring as he used his telekinesis to help him do a front flip and sail over the ropes, and into the center of the ring. Right in front of Josie. Y/N rose steadily as he looked his niece in the eye and asked. “How about two out of three?” The crowd cheered for Y/N, as Dark Josie smirked at her uncle.
“Uncle Y/N, Uncle Stefan, what a most unwelcome surprise. I didn’t expect the two of you to show up,” Dark Josie said.
Y/N smirked. “Come on, Jo. You didn’t think I was gonna miss yours and Lizzie’s 22nd birthday didn’t you?”
“Let me guess you got me a birthday card? Gift card? Flowers?” Dark Josie said.
“Actually, I came to talk some sense into you. This isn’t you Josie,” Y/N said.
“That’s where you’re wrong, dear uncle. This is the best version of me and not that weak version of myself that claims to be a witch. She’s pathetic and so are you,” Dark Josie said. “Now the real question is do I have to kill you and your lovely little family over there?” Josie glanced at Stefan and Alex and smirked as Stefan put a protective arm around his son. “To get my bitch of a sister to come and face the music?”
Y/N took a step forward. “If you wanna fight. Then fight me.”
“Excellent. Let's see if the famous Gilbert witch is as powerful as they say you are,” Dark Josie said. She charged forward as Y/N did a cartwheel kick and sent Dark Josie flying back into the corner ropes of the ring.
Alex’s green eyes glanced from left to right at his father and his cousin Josie. He turned to look at his dad, who also had a concerned look on his face. “Dad, are you sure pops can handle this?” He knew his father was a powerful witch, but that’s when he had been younger. Now he’s much older.
Stefan glanced at his son and smiled. “Trust me, Lex. Your father’s a total badass.”
Dark Josie huffed as she cast a spell of electricity. “Lecutio Maxima!” A spark of red electricity shot out of her right arm as her eyes went black. Y/N flicked his wrist out and froze the attack in midair.
“This isn't any fun. You're not even fighting back,” Dark Josie accused.
“Neither are you. I know that you're in there, Josie,” Y/N said.
“Give it up, Y/N. What's it gonna take to get it through to your thick hybrid skull that I'm Josie now?” Dark Josie told him. “Incendia!” A stream of fire came at Y/N as he used his telekinesis to move it away from himself and at the corner behind him. The blast caused a sharp wooden spike to show. Y/N ran up and kicked Josie in the stomach as he fell back and so did she. Dark Josie grunted as she hatefully stared at Y/N.
“You are not Josie. I know that you think she's weak, but I know the truth... she's strong. You're strong.” The Necromancer rolled his eyes at that. “No one could shoulder the burdens that you carry. And you're always there for your friends and family when they need you. So, please, Jo, we really need you right now.”
“Enough of this drivel! What are you waiting for? Kill the hybrid!” The Necromancer demands as Dark Josie growls in anger. She closes her eyes as she mental wrestles with herself and her emotions. Y/N’s words are starting to affect her as she screams out. “Shut up. Everybody, shut up!” Her voice echoes through the given space as everyone goes silent. Then it happens. Y/N can see a flicker of light in Josie as she looks at him bewildered and just a little bit afraid.
“Uncle Y/N?”
“Jo, is that you?”
Josie’s eyes close for a moment and Y/N knows she’s gone as she opens her eyes again and they’re pitch black. She smiles at Y/N as she stands up. “Mm. Did you really think that you'd be the one that would bring out my good side? I don't even think you’re her favorite uncle.” Dark Josie waves a hand as she chants out: “Ascendo.” Y/N is levitated into the air as Dark Josie hovers him above the spiked end in the corner of the ring. The crowd gasps as Stefan fears for his husband’s safety. The Necromancer smirks. Another soul for him to control.
“So, any last words for your tombstone?” Dark Josie smiled.
“I know you're in there, Josie. Fight. I know you’re strong enough to overcome this.”
The Siphoner witch pretended to think about this. “Nah,” Dark Josie says, as she lets Y/N go as the crowd gasps and watches in horror as Y/N is stabbed in the back by the wooden spike.
“No, dad!” Alex tries to run over his father, but Stefan holds him back. “No, Alex! It’s too dangerous.”
Dark Josie sighed. “Well, that was disappointing.” She turns around. “Anyone else wanna give it a go?”
“I do,” a deep voice says behind her.
Dark Josie turns and gasps as she sees Y/N standing there, fine, but his eyes are black just like hers. He has a manic smile on his face. “Didn’t anyone tell you my lovely niece? Black is my color.”
Dark Josie quickly recovers as she chuckles. “But it looks so much better on me. He finally let you out on good behavior?”
“Something like that.”
“Don't tell me it was your family being in danger that brought you out. You've gone soft.”
“Apparently, it's actually exactly what Y/N needed to let me loose. I'm here to put you down. My good side likes to pretend that he’s just a hybrid, and not harboring the hollow and shadow inside himself.”
“So… what? You think you going full dark side is going to help me be good again?” Dark Josie asked.
“Fuck, no,” Y/N’s dark side chuckled. “My goodie two shoes self wants you to repent your evil ways and see the light, but I’m here to congratulate you.”
“Oh, really?” Dark Josie raised an eyebrow.
“You bet. I respect that you understand what true power feels like, and you have to do anything to get it. Of course, I could just snap my fingers and bring you back to your old self, but I'm not going to.”
“And why is that?”
“The stronger Saltzman sibling is standing before me and when this is over, feel free to kill anyone you want,” Y/N smirked at the scared crowd. “But first I want you to prove your worth to me. Prove to me that you're the best. Kill me if you can and take my powers.”
“Is that all?” Dark Josie laughed. “Too easy.”
“We’ll see.”
“Lecutio Maxima!”
The attack hit Y/N as his body absorbed the electricity. He looked at Josie. “That's the best you got, kid?”
Dark Josie frowned. “Invidia!”
Dark Y/N grabbed his head in pain as his nose began to bleed as he screamed in pain. Dark Josie smiled as the pain subsided in Y/N’s head as he looked at Josie, wiping the blood from his nose and smirking. “Not bad, but not good enough. Got any other tricks in your bag?”
“Dimeterre,” Dark Josie said as the wooden poles in the corners of the ring broke off and levitated into the air as she pointed them at Y/N.
“Ooh, pointy,” Dark Y/N said sarcastically.
Dark Josie threw them at Y/N as the wooden spears punctured his skin as blood seeped through his wounds. The students gasped in horror as Y/N grabbed one of the spears and pulled it out like it was nothing and threw it to the side. He did the same with the others. “I'll give you props, Jose. You've got a creative way to kill somebody, but what’d you say we try a little magic to magic action?”
“Incendia!” Josie shot a stream of fire from her hands as Y/N battled back with lighting. The two opposing forces collided with each creating a fissure of powers as the colliding powers cast a glowing shadow on both Y/N and Josie. The powers canceled each other out and caused a small explosion.
“Tell me, kid. Have they taught you how to fight with shadows yet?” Dark Y/N asked her. “Here, Siphon this!” A black shadow-like attack hit Dark Josie as she went flying back into the corner ropes and groaned as she hit the floor of the ring. She glowed as she absorbed the magic, but it still hurt like a bitch. Y/N walked up and glanced down at Josie as she glared at him.
“Go on then. Kill me!”
“Oh, don't worry, I will, but I want you to suffer first.” Y/N snapped his fingers as he used his telekinesis to break Dark Josie’s bones as she screamed in pain.
“Maybe I was wrong. You really are pathetic. Both versions of yourself,” Y/N said. “Maybe I should put you out of your misery.” His hand traveled down and close to Dark Josie’s chest as he was about to jam his fist in, but a voice stopped him from doing so.
“Dad? Please, stop.”
Y/N turned to see Alex with a pleasing look in his emerald eyes. It tugged at Y/N the way his son was looking at him. So concerned. So scared. There has only ever been one other person who’s been able to bring Y/N back from the edge. It was Stefan. Now it was both Stefan and Alex.
Y/N felt his dark half melt off him as his eyes returned to normal and he walked off the ring and into his family’s arms. “I’m sorry you had to see that,” Y/N apologized.
“It’s okay, dad. Everything is going to be okay,” Alex said, gently.
“It’s alright, honey. We have reinforcements,” Stefan said as Lizzie, Hope, and MG came up behind them.
“Don’t worry, uncle Y/N. I got this one,” Lizzie said as she glared at Josie, who in turn did the same thing. Game on for the Merge.
