Markle's BEST Backer: New-York-based Irish businessman and honorary OBE recipient John Fitzpatrick on his way to Windsor to see his friend Meghan Markle tie the knot with Prince Harry.
Tumblr media
No matter how much we try to deny it, if one of the golden-ticket invites to the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Irish American actress Meghan Markle had landed on our laps over the last few weeks, there’s no way we wouldn’t be on a flight over to Windsor right now. And so the news that New-York-based Irish businessman John Fitzpatrick has landed himself on the Windsor Castle guestlist for Saturday, May 19, has us more than a little green with envy.
Fitzpatrick, a hotelier and philanthropist who received an honorary OBE from the Queen for his work toward the peace process in Northern Ireland and his massive charity work, has been a friend of Markle’s for some time, meeting with her in his New York hotel with thanks to Irish golfer Rory McIlroy and even inviting her along to the White House and his Clinton fundraiser.

“I'm delighted to be asked because I know Meghan but she has so many people to invite so I really appreciate her inviting me. It's great,” Fitzpatrick told IrishCentral.
“I'm sure they have a lot of more important guests to invite so I didn't expect it at all but I got an email from Buckingham Palace to give me the heads up to say that they would like your full address and that Meghan and Prince Harry would like to write to you. That was a few months ago so I kept that quiet and finally it arrived in from Buckingham Palace about four weeks ago.” And not only was Fitzpatrick lucky enough to bag an invite but he’s set to hang out with all the “Suits” cast while in England as another friend of his Sarah Rafferty, who plays Donna in the hit show, invited him to go sightseeing with the rest of Markle’s cast members.
“I think to be in Windsor and St Paul's Church, that's going to be spectacular,” he admits, however.
“You always see them on television but you never really know what it's like. I think that will probably be the best part of the whole thing. The whole day will be great but I think the church will be special.”
While one Irish psychic has predicted that the day will end in disaster, Fitzpatrick only has high hopes for Meghan and Harry as a married couple.
“I think it's very natural the way they met and the way they fell in love. Some royal weddings may not have been as happy as others but this one will be a good one,” he stated.
“I think it will be a great example of the future generation: meeting the people they want to meet and getting on with life together as best they can. I think another great example is Prince William and Kate. The younger generation coming up now, it's just great to see them being happy.”
The Dublin-born philanthropist also doesn’t have much time for those who think that there’s no place for an Irish person at a British Royal wedding, stating “we've moved well past that now.”
“I don't think anybody would object to an Irish person going to a Royal Wedding. I'm proud to be going, to be honest with you because I think over the last 20 years, England and Ireland have become close friends and I think what's really helped us was the Queen's visit to Ireland ...
“I've met Prince Charles a few times because some of the charities I support in Northern Ireland he's the patron of. We're working on the same thing. It's peace in Northern Ireland. It's peace in both countries and I think it's very important to keep that going.”
Tumblr media
And what to buy as a wedding gift for a Prince and a future Princess? Well, the royal couple has made that easy for their guests, asking them to donate to any of a list of charities instead of a gift for themselves. “They're great causes,” Fitzpatrick added. “It's the same thing with anybody's wedding, what do you buy them? I don't think they need a toaster somehow!”
John Fitzpatrick-Fitzpatrick’s Manhattan, on 57th and Lexington, is de rigeur for Irish internationals staying in the city, and John Fitzpatrick has worked for that distinction. But despite owning a cumulative 27 floors and a castle as President and CEO of Fitzpatrick Hotel Group, North America, John is one of the most down to earth people you could meet.
As the second eldest of the five children of Paddy and Eithne Fitzpatrick, who owned three hotels across Ireland, John began his career by mowing the lawn at Killiney Castle Hotel in Co. Dublin during the summers when he was a teenager. Later he moved on to washing dishes in the hotel kitchen. From there, onto washing glasses, and, eventually, when he was 17, he got to mix drinks behind the bar, working every weekend while he was still in school.
After these initial experiences in the industry in Ireland, John enrolled in the prestigious hotel management course at the University of Las Vegas. After graduating, he worked at two Chicago hotels before returning to Ireland, where he did not stay for long. In 1990, Fitzpatrick, with his father’s blessing, began considering various American cities as potential hotel sites, eventually landing on New York and purchasing the building that would become Fitzpatrick’s Manhattan.
When the hotel opened in 1991, Albert Reynolds, who was then Taoiseach, stayed there. Then Mary Robinson, who at the time was President of Ireland, paid a visit. Then Gregory Peck choose Fitzpatrick’s. Soon, the hotel’s reputation was established. Seven years later, John opened another New York hotel, Fitzpatrick’s Grand Central, on 44th Street.
When John’s mother passed away in 1994, he founded The Eithne Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund in her honor. With the death of his father in 2001, the fund became the Eithne and Paddy Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund, whose mission is to “make a significant positive impact on the lives of those in need.” Among its current projects are the Integrated Education Fund, which strives to integrate the education system in Northern Ireland, and the Corrymeela Community, which promotes reconciliation across social, religious, and political divides in the North. In addition to these peace and reconciliation initiatives, the fund, which has raised $1.3 million to date, also supports Barretstown, a summer camp for seriously ill children.
In 2011, Fitzpatrick participated in RTÉ’s version of Secret Millionaire, traveling to the Muirhevnamor housing estate and Coxs Demense in Dundalk, Co. Louth, and at the end of the program gave away a total of €20,000 to the Craobh Rua Community House, €15,000 to senior citizen organization Cuidigh Linn, and €2,000 to O’Hanlon Park Boxing & Fitness Club. His donations were matched by the Eithne and Paddy Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund.
John has just been named Chairman of The American Ireland Fund and although he is the recipient of numerous other accolades (including an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II), it’s safe to say that the greatest reward for John Fitzpatrick, is the one he gets from giving back.

Hillary Clinton will be inaugurated as the Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast on Friday when she will become the first female Chancellor in the university's history.
The former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential candidate was named the 11th Chancellor of the university in January 2020 but has yet to be officially installed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The formal inauguration ceremony is set to take place at Whitla Hall at the end of the first week of the academic year. The BBC reports that Clinton will deliver an address and confer several honorary degrees as part of the event.
Clinton's role as Chancellor will be largely ceremonial and is slated to run for a period of five years.
The 2016 Democratic nominee will preside over graduation ceremonies, serve as an ambassador for the university, and offer advice and counsel to senior management at the university as part of her duties as Chancellor.
Clinton said that she was proud to be named Chancellor of the university when she was appointed to the role in January 2020.
"It’s my great privilege to become @QUBelfast‘s 11th — and first female — chancellor," she said in a tweet at the time. "It’s a place I have great fondness for and have grown a strong relationship with over the years, and I’m proud to be an ambassador for its excellence."
Hillary Clinton urged Northern Ireland to form an interim government while accepting an honorary degree at Queen's University Belfast.
Oct 11, 2018 Former US Secretary of State received an honorary degree at Queen’s University Belfast
Hillary Clinton, former US Secretary of State and 2016 Presidential nominee, accepted an honorary degree from Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland on October 10.
While accepting her honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree, Clinton urged the current Northern Irish government to come together to continue the shared mission of peace in the region, as well as to reassure the world that Northern Ireland is open for business as Brexit still lingers.
Queen’s University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Greer said Clinton “made a considerable contribution to the Northern Ireland Peace Process and, as Secretary of State, focused on economic development to underpin the emergence of a strong and competitive Northern Ireland. “
“With her long-standing commitment to peace, stability and economic regeneration, she is a strong advocate for Northern Ireland and an inspirational role model for the Queen’s community.”
Prior to Clinton’s speech, Queen's Pro-Vice-Chancellor Adrienne Scullion announced a new two awards for students in Clinton’s name.
'The Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for Peace and Reconciliation' will allow “two exceptional female students from the USA who wish to pursue study in a field related to politics, conflict transformation or human rights the opportunity to study at the University.”
The second, named the 'Hillary Rodham Clinton Early Career Fellowship', will allow an outstanding early career researcher to work in the fields of conflict transformation; global security and borders; human rights including women’s rights and children’s rights; international law; international politics; international relations; and women in politics.
Clinton’s degree ceremony on Wednesday was met with some protest by People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll. Some raised poster which read “no honours for war criminals”

“Peace, not paralysis”
In her speech, Clinton referenced Brexit, which she does not support, and said, "The people of Northern Ireland face consequential decisions.”
"I do not come today as an authority with all the answers. I come as a friend who knows how hard the struggle has been.”
Clinton also urged Northern Ireland to form an interim government. Power-sharing in the country has been nonexistent since a January 2017 fallout amongst Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein.
“I wonder if would it be possible," said Clinton, "for the people of Northern Ireland and those who represent them both in Westminster and here could figure out a way to form an interim community government for the purposes of securing the best possible Brexit outcome for Northern Ireland.”
“Back in 2016, Arlene Foster and Martin McGuinness wrote a joint letter to Prime Minister May about their Brexit priorities and concerns, that’s a long time ago in political years but a similarly unified voice could be valuable in the difficult days ahead.”
“Imagine a functional executive that speaks for all the people of Northern Ireland, weighing in on the final negotiations and implementation of whatever plan emerges.”
“Imagine an Executive reassuring companies and investors already skittish about Brexit, sending a clear message that no matter what happens, Northern Ireland is open for business.”
“The world is watching, Northern Ireland has been a symbol to people everywhere, democracy’s power to transcend divisions and deliver prosperity, peace, and progress.”
“We need that, that symbol, that reality now more than ever.”
“Peace, not paralysis, you deserve that better future, you always have.”
“I will pray and trust that it comes to pass. I and many of us in the United States will never stop standing with you, and cheering you on this journey.”
New York hotel owner John Fitzpatrick honored at Queen's University Jul 07, 2011

MEET JOHN FITZPATRICK - Fitzpatrick Hotels
September 03, 2016
John Fitzpatrick, is a well known hotelier and philanthropist, and owner of the Fitzpatrick Hotel Group New York. He was born in Dublin, and with his father, brothers and sisters worked in many of the Fitzpatrick Hotel Group’s Irish hotels in the 1970’s and 1980’s. He has called New York home since he opened the doors of the Fitzpatrick Manhattan in December 1991.  The Fitzpatrick Manhattan hotel, was the only Irish owned and operated hotel in New York. Today, Fitzpatrick Manhattan and it’s sister hotel, Fitzpatrick Grand Central are still the only Irish owned and operated properties in Manhattan.
John learnt everything about the hotel business from his father, Paddy Fitzpatrick, who worked in many hotels in Ireland prior to buying the Killiney Castle Hotel in Dublin. He soon added the Fitzpatrick Shamrock Hotel in Bunratty, County Clare, and the Fitzpatrick Silver Springs in Cork.  His mother Eithne, a former Miss Ireland, was also hugely influential on his career.  She worked with his father on building up the family business and on every aspect the hotels interior design.
The second eldest of Paddy and Eithne’s five children, John wanted to get international experiences, and headed to the United States at an early age. He worked in various cities including Las Vegas and Chicago, before he come back to the family business in Ireland. In 1990 he returned to New York to look for a suitable property to renovate and turn into a Fitzpatrick Hotel. To save money he stayed in the empty hotel during construction, padlocking the door after the crews went home at night.  The hotel opened its doors in December 1991. The hotel has become hugely popular with heads of state, Irish stars and the Hollywood A-list alike. Due to its success, a couple of years later John opened another New York hotel  – The Fitzpatrick Grand Central.
Such is John’s reputation in the hospitality industry that he has served terms as chairman of the New York Hotel Association, chairman of the American Hotel and Lodging Association and is currently chairman of The Ireland Funds.
When his parents passed away, John decided to commemorate her with an annual golf tournament. To date this event has raised millions of dollars, these funds have been used to support various charities including Corrymeela Centre, County Antrim, Barrettstown, County Wicklow, and Barnardos. All of the funds are distributed via the Paddy & Eithne Memorial Fund"

I Hate You, I Love You, Chapter 168
Chapter Summary -With a day to think over her issues, Danielle and Tom decide on a venue and discuss other important parts of the wedding.
Previous Chapter
Rating - Mature (some chapters contain smut)
Triggers - references to Tom Hiddleston’s work with the #MeToo Movement. That chapter will be tagged accordingly.
authors Note - I have been working on this for the last 3 years, it is currently 180+ chapters long.  This will be updated daily, so long as I can get time to do so, obviously.
NOTES -So yeah, Ashford castle is in Connemara too, it is a very fancy hotel where Rory McIlroy the golfer got married, and Pierce Brosnan...well, if I have to say who is, I'm shook. Also, apparently, that is the name of one of the people running the agency Tom is with, so yeah, I just went with that.
Danielle looked at the extravagant building in front of her apprehensively. It was gorgeous but it was a five-star hotel, of course, it would be, the sensible side reminded her that this was one of the most expensive venues in Ireland and that was simply too much. The other part realised what she loved about Kylemore Abbey, it was far more to their liking in many ways. She sighed. Perhaps that was why they did not say yes straight away so that when she did, it was because she was not worried about other places, that she would know it was right for them. She no sooner saw the wedding organiser for the hotel and felt as though it was more of a brag for them to have high profile weddings than anything the bride and groom could want for their day. At the end of it all, she gave one look to Tom and a slight shake of the head and he gave a similar nod before they thanked the events planner and went back to the car.
Tumblr media
“Elle?” Tom asked curiously.
“Can we tell Kylemore yes?” Tom stopped and looked at her. “I thought you didn’t…” “I know but this place, which is gorgeous, yes but it’s not us.” “No, it’s not,” Tom agreed. “I would love to stay here for a few days but for our wedding…”
“Definitely.” “That doesn’t mean Kylemore has to be the place though.” Tom pointed out. “If you’re not happy with it, we don’t have to pick it, it’s not a ‘here or there only’ choice. We can keep looking.” “Kylemore is not renowned for weddings, just the pictures, it’s known for other things. No one we don’t want will suspect it and it is beautiful. They were actually nice to us and seemed to care about our day, not the publicity and I just feel it is a far better fit. I just...with time to think and whatnot, I would like it, honestly.” “And the cost?” Tom pressed slightly. They had spoken about it several times but before they left, Tom physically sat her down and told her that though he knew she was a financially savvy woman, something he liked about her, and she knew he was not one to spend unnecessarily himself as could be noted by his constant use of the same few garments but weddings were costly affairs in general and with neither of them planning to do it more than once, he wanted it done right and knew she was similar. She was meticulous by nature, so of course, she would want the best from their day and he was willing to do whatever was required to do so within reason. If he said it was reasonable, he was willing to do it and wanted her to feel that she could ask for most anything she wanted for the day and he would agree.
Danielle inhaled deeply. “As you said, it’s once-off.”
Elated that she had listened to him, Tom retrieved the number for the Abbey and dialled it, watching as Danielle began driving towards the Victorian complex, making arrangements to book their day, excited to be getting something so official sorted.
*
It was dark by the time Danielle and Tom left the Abbey. There was a substantial amount of paperwork, not just from the management for them but with their decision made, Tom had informed Luke of said decision and he, along with Tom’s agent, Christian arranged for an NDA to be faxed to the Abbey for Danielle’s and Tom’s privacy which took some time to organise. At the end of it all, Tom and Danielle were relieved to be in the car and returning to her grandmother’s.
“Well, that’s sorted.” Danielle was content to have that particular issue put to rest. She had texted Emma as her matron of honour to inform her of the location. “I am sure Aunt Bernie will be seething at our ‘outdoing’ Laura.” “And what will Laura think?” “That she is happy to get her wedding reception in the hotel she swore she would, I assume. We went to our...I have no idea what relation they are to us but some relation’s wedding in that hotel and she swore it was her dream location, that was like ten years ago and sure enough, she’s getting married there, so I don’t think she will care about us, she likes her own thing.” Danielle stated as she pulled the car out of the car park and drove in the direction of Galway.
“Are you excited to have this done?” Tom queried.
“It’s one less stress now. We have the church and the reception, that’s two of the biggest concerns sorted, everything else is just small stuff. I will ring the florists in the morning, we also need to be honest, sit down and discuss numbers in the bridal party.” “How do you mean?” “Well, how many groomsmen are you thinking?” “I am not sure, I don’t know how to get it down to two or three.”
“Well, you best be thinking. We need to start getting that side of things sorted.” “How many bridesmaids have you?” “I only chose Emma so far. I was thinking perhaps Nacelle too but nothing planned yet.” “Well Luke is a given,” Tom rattled off. “I think he has to be my Best Man.”
“At this stage, he deserves that, your firstborn and a substantial inheritance, if you don’t kill him with the stress first.”
Tom gave her a slightly bemused look. “I was also thinking Ben.” “Well, you were his groomsman, you are best friends, it makes sense,” She agreed.
“But Francis...”
Danielle gave a slight nod, Francis she had met at the gathering they had in their home with Hugh Laurie, his wife and the Cumberbatch’s. He had been Tom’s roommate in college, they knew each other from Eton, they rarely got to see each other anymore, Francis rarely was in Britain these days, he moved to the US a time before but he and Tom met often when Tom went there, Jeremy often going to where Tom was to see his friend or when Jeremy was in England, she knew his meaning to Tom, he had been his main peer support when his parents had broken up. “Well, then, have three groomsmen.”
“Would you be okay with that?” Tom asked hopefully.
Danielle scoffed. “Tom, if you want seven groomsmen, then so be it, it’s your wedding too.” She reminded him.
“Is that going into the realms of excessive?”
“Not at all, it’s a reasonable amount and they are three of your closest friends.”
“But you have only two bridesmaids?”
“I think it’s safe to say I can wrangle up a third. I don’t really talk to many from school any more, I lost contact with most of them when I went to Britain, that’s not to say I don’t have people I can ask, so I will consider a third and we keep it even. We have our flower girls sorted, we can’t choose between them, but that’s fine, the Duchess can no doubt assist with Lucy, we need two little page boys then to even that, I was thinking, you’re Francis’ boy’s Godfather and he is what, eight? He will be perfect and if we ask Ben and Sophie if we can use Kit? If they decline, we have other options.”
Tom eyed her cautiously. “How much thought have you put into this?” “I analyse everything, I’m peculiar like that, that’s why I went to study business, why I became a paramedic and why I am a safety officer.” She commented, not taking her eyes off the road due to free-roaming ponies and sheep that she knew could be at risk in the darkness.
“I feel like I am leaving too much of this on you, like I am not doing my fair share.”
“I am the naturally organised one, though, it makes sense that I would do a lot of the planning.” She pointed out.
Tom had to concede that was true. He had found that since Danielle had entered his life, even before when it was as a friend, aspects of it had become far more organised. She showed him the fine art of cooking when he had time and making portions of whatever he could that would be perfect for those evenings he would not have time to cook. It made filming a hundred times easier, she even suggested that if he did not even have time to cook, get some deli cooked meals and portion them, it startled him how efficient she was. And now as his partner, she had organised his life all the more. Even his morning routine, which had taken him upwards of forty-five minutes to an hour with breakfast was twenty now. Time efficiency, he realised, was a matter of immense importance to her and none were happier with that alteration to his life than Luke, who had more than once pleaded with Tom to remain with Danielle for that reason in itself if nothing else. “Well, let me know if you need me to do more.” She nodded as she indicated to turn onto another road. “Do you still think it an extravagant waste though?” “Oh yeah, I’ll always maintain that.” She laughed slightly. “But a waste I’m okay with.”
“So, you’re happy with that? You’re okay, with it.” “Yes.” She confirmed, noting the worried look on his face. “For the record, I am okay with everything.”
Tom knew her comment was more than a general statement. After their discussion yesterday or more accurately her letter and Tom making reference to it after, Danielle seemed better, more like herself again. There was a small cloud over things but not as bad as the day before. She seemed to be glancing at Tom every other minute as though waiting for him to say something on the matter but he said nothing, he simply held her hand and kissed her whenever he felt her getting anxious. “Good, I am here Elle, no matter what, I am here. If you woke up tomorrow and decided to never return to England, if you told me you were not interested in marrying me, if you wanted never to kiss me again, you can trust me with what you told me and you can talk to me about it if you are ever ready to speak about it.”
With a loving smile, she brought her hand over to his for a moment and gave it a small squeeze. “I am so lucky to have you.”

Daniel Berger is back on the hunt
Daniel Berger is back on the hunt
Berger, the son of former Davis Cup tennis player Jay Berger, started the day with four straight birds. Daniel Berger is back from his job to shoot at least 66 winners in the first round of the Hero World Challenge at the Albany Golf Course on Thursday. Berger was led by Abraham Ancer and Rory McIlroy. American Berger, who played his first match since the Ryder Cup in September, said he needed a…

U.S. counters Europe fightback to stretch lead at Ryder Cup
KOHLER, Wis
The United States seized a commanding 9-3 lead over Europe at the Ryder Cup on Saturday, dominating morning foursomes once more to surge ever closer to reclaiming the coveted title.
The Americans won a third consecutive session 3-1 at Whistling Straits for their largest lead since 1975 despite Europe making a charge in each match, adding to the notion of a "Wake by the Lake" on the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Two-time major winners Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa beat England's Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton 2&1 while Tokyo Olympic champion Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay rallied to beat England's Lee Westwood and Matthew Fitzpatrick 2&1.
Johnson and Schauffele each improved to 3-0.
"I felt like I've just played solid, not trying to do anything too crazy, just keep the ball in play," Johnson said. "We played solid. We got off to a great start.
"We're just trying to win each session and keep that lead."
Top-ranked Jon Rahm, unbeaten in three matches, and Sergio Garcia, the all-time Ryder Cup points leader, rallied after losing the first three holes to beat Americans Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger 3&1.
"It means a lot," Rahm said. "We know it's a long race. We knew we had three to make up from the start. We played unbelievable from six on. We took advantage of the breaks we had."
But Europe rookies Viktor Hovland and Bernd Wiesberger went 14 holes without trailing until fading at the finish as Americans Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth charged late to win 2-up.
"We expect to go out and play well," Spieth said. "Our team is playing great and I'm proud of them."
Four afternoon four-ball matches and 12 concluding Sunday singles matches will decide a winner. The Americans need 14.5 points to reclaim the Ryder Cup while Europe need 14 to retain the trophy.
Europe's hopes looked good early as Rahm and Garcia rallied. Rahm won the sixth hole with a 10-foot birdie putt and Garcia chipped in from 41 feet at the ninth to equalize.
"We got on a great stretch of holes with birdies and chip ins," Garcia said.
Garcia sank an eight-foot birdie putt at the par-3 12th to give the Spanish duo their first lead. They traded the 13th and 14th holes with bogeys before Garcia blasted his approach to five feet at the par-5 15th and Rahm sank the eagle putt.
The Spaniards took the match with a par at the par-3 17th, Garcia winning a record 24th Ryder Cup match.
"I've been fortunate to do it for many years," Garcia said. "I'm so proud to be a part of Team Europe."
Johnson and Morikawa went 3-up after three holes on Johnson's 47-foot chip in at the par-3 third and were 4-up through 10 before Casey and Hatton rallied.
Casey and Hatton won 11 and 13 with pars and 14 when Casey holed out for eagle from 105 yards. But Hatton missed a five-foot par putt at 15 and Johnson holed a four-footer for par to win the hole. They halved the next two to seal the match.
Spieth and Thomas, 3-down after six holes, took their first lead when Wiesberger missed an eight-foot par putt at 15 and doubled it with an eagle at the par-5 16th before an exchange of bogeys to end matters.
"Getting to 3-down is tough," Spieth said. "Fortunately it was only through six holes. We knew if we played the last 12 under par we might be able to get it back in this wind."
Schauffele sank a 31-foot birdie putt to win the par-3 seventh and Cantlay sank a 23-foot birdie putt to win the ninth hole and go 1-up over Westwood and Fitzpatrick. The US duo were never matched again.
"It was a dogfight," Schauffele said. "We knew it was going to be."
Harrington benched Rory McIlroy for Saturday's foursomes matches after the four-time major winner lost twice in one day for the first time in his Ryder Cup career.
"We know we need a big performance with him in the singles," Harrington said. "He needs to rest like everybody else."
McIlroy and England's Ian Poulter were set to return in Saturday four-balls against Johnson and Morikawa.

I Hate You, I Love You, Chapter 166
Chapter Summary -Tom and Danielle go to Ireland to see about booking the venue, while there, Tom realises something that makes him see that this actually matters a lot more to Danielle than he thought.
NOTES -
Aoife is pronounced E-Fa MacDaragh is pronounced Mac-Dar-ah
Look, I like the idea of taking your husband's name, it's traditional, so to me, it's nice. I totally respect any woman that keeps hers, that's her business, but I like it, personally, and for this, so does Danielle.

Tom and Danielle looked at the building in front of them. The fact it was wintery, wet and cold, with plants and trees bare of leaves did not give the best idea of what the place would look like in the summer but it did allow them to see what they were looking at. It was secluded and picturesque, everything they could want location wise.
“Are you happy with it?” Tom asked, looking at the walled garden behind them.
“It’s very beautiful.”
“That’s not what I asked, Elle.”
“I am just anxious to see what we are dealing with.”
“Elle, I know I have said this, ad nauseam but I mean it, when we talk about if we want to book this, I do not want the cost to be the sole reason you say no, I want this to be perfect for us.”
“So if they said something like eighty grand, you’re okay with that?” She challenged.
“Obviously not, but you know that’s not what I mean.”
“No,” she conceded. “I just think it’s all a bit mad.”
“Why? We have the money.”
“I rather we spend the money on a bigger house if you’re adamant to spend it at all.”
“I am curious, how much did your parents leave you to say you are so money conscious.”
“I paid for my house outright and still had enough to move everything over, set myself up over in Britain and have a rainy day fund. Dad’s practise wasn’t worth too much, you saw it, it's small, more an office than anything and our house was small, so it wasn’t too much either. But it got me a three-bed in Suffolk, so…” She shrugged.
“I never asked but why a three-bed? You didn’t seem interested in having a family when you came over.”
“I didn’t, I was only twenty-five but I was thinking if I did, it would be a solid investment, or even if I didn’t, it’s a lot easier to sell a bigger house these days.”
“You are so sensible.”
“Too sensible for this,” She laughed. “Maybe that’s why I was never gone on marriage, the waste of money.”
“Is that how you feel still?” Tom looked at her worried. “Why did you say yes?”
“I want to marry you,” Danielle stated immediately, Tom said nothing whilst waiting for her to make explain what she meant. “I didn’t say that right, what I meant to say was perhaps that’s why marriage was never something overly appealing to me before, the dislike of the financial part of it. I always thought it to be an unnecessarily expensive endeavour; I still do, as you can see but I do want to be married to you. I just don’t want to spend twenty thousand euro doing it.”
“Why did you pick that number?”
“The average cost of a wedding in Ireland is twenty-one thousand euro.” She informed him.
“Can you imagine how cheap and expensive some people make their day?”
“Well, Ashford castle is about an hour from here and that’s actually one of the most expensive locations to get married in the country, so…”
“Where?”
“It’s where Rory McIlroy and Pierce Brosnan both got married, very exclusive,” Danielle commented, not paying too much heed to him until she realised Tom was on his phone. “What are you doing?”
“Checking something.”
“Tom...don't even think about it.”
“I am just looking.”
“Tom!”
“Which is closer the church?” Danielle said nothing. “Elle…”
“No, we are not considering it. I don’t even know why we are considering this, this is all crazy.”
“I just want it all to be incredible, so when I am ringing you from a set saying reshoots are going to be another few days and miss that party we had planned, you can remember I am not actually a bad husband.” He explained as they walked towards the front door of the abbey as the rain began to fall again.
Danielle rolled her eyes as she listened to him. “I don’t need a fancy wedding venue for that.”
“I know, but it may help.” Tom held the door for her as they walked inside.
As soon as they did, it appeared that the manager was eagerly waiting for them and rushed over to them, a woman behind him with a file of some manner with her. “Mr Hiddleston, Ms Hughes, how wonderful to meet you, I am MacDaragh Canty, I am the manager here and this is Aoife Zeigler, our events coordinator.” He introduced them. “We are so honoured you have considered us for your wedding.”
“Thank you.” Tom smiled, shaking the man’s hand. “Elle was saying this place was beautiful but I have to admit, I think she sold you short.”
“Thank you. We try to keep it looking well. I will allow Aoife to take you around and discuss different aspects of the building with you, she is very knowledgeable on the building and grounds and has practically every name of note that you could want from florists to chocolatiers regarding a function to hand and if you wish to discuss anything with me, please, do not hesitate to ask and I will be at your service.”
“Thank you,” Tom repeated before looking to the woman in front of them who had yet to speak as the man walked away to deal with another matter.
“Follow me please.” She ushered them to the edge of the foyer and began to discuss the different manners in which guests would be welcomed and other such things as she walked through the building with them.
For the most of an hour, Aoife went through everything with them, talking about extra security measures they could put in place, all things considered. After it all, they sat and discussed the cost of everything. More than once, Tom felt Danielle’s shock beside him, knowing she did not want to pay so much for the day but he rubbed her hand slightly to have her remember that this was not an issue for them.
“And would you be getting married at the church here?” Aoife asked.
“No, my parish one, it’s halfway between here and Galway.”
“Right, so you are talking an arrival time of about four then, or do you want the pictures here?”
“More than likely here.”
“Okay, well, we can take all that into account, we also need to make note of dietary needs. Any allergens?”
“Gluten sensitivity, dairy sensitivity, a few vegetarians and two vegans are the major ones.”
“Okay, so if we make the meals for all of the vegetarians vegan, we can ensure the meal is satisfactory for all of them, as regards the sensitivities, we will treat them as allergies and keep their food separate, the best thing to do would be to prepare them near but not next to the vegan food, for obvious reasons.”
“Thank you.” Danielle smiled.
“So, do you want to make a reservation now or think it over?”
“We would actually like to take the night to consider it.” Tom declared. Internally, Danielle frowned but did not let it show for fear that it would force Tom to say something aloud he did not wish to discuss. “We are staying nearby so we can sort the deposit tomorrow if required.”
“Perfect, thank you very much for your considering us. I am the only one to have the dates you discussed with us, so do not worry about it becoming public knowledge, I understand that these things are a concern for you both but we will not permit that information to become public knowledge.”
“Thank you, we appreciate that.” Danielle smiled.
They walked to the car and said nothing to one another as they got in, Danielle startled that Tom took the driver’s side, but she sat into the passenger side and watched as Tom chuckled as he pulled the driver’s seat back so he could actually get into the car properly. “So...is there a reason you are not booking?”
“Yes, the fact you are speaking about me saying yes and not us.”
“I just don’t know.”
“What don’t you feel is right?”
“I am not sure.”
“Talk to me.”
“I don’t know. I just am not blown away by it.”
“Okay, well, that’s why we’re here. We’ll get something that you do actually want,” Tom commented as he drove out the gate
“It’s not all about me.”
“No, there are two of us in it but I don’t want to say yes to somewhere, pay a considerable sum of money and for you to look back at not have the biggest smile possible at the thought of the day. I like it but if you don’t.”
“Tom, we could get married in a registry office in London, Cork, Galway, fuck even Ballinasloe and I would be happy, as long as I get to call you my husband at the end of it. I would get married today, in these clothes, half wet and no make-up just to be married to you, it’s not the place or the cost, it’s the fact that in twenty years time, when I have long fucking forgotten what we even ate at the wedding, that I get to see the band on my finger and remember that it is there because I am married to you, that is what matters. When some post comes through the door saying ‘Danielle Hiddleston’ or when people call us Mr and Mrs Hiddleston and it’s not an error, that’s what I want. I don’t care about a venue in the grand scheme of things. That’s not what we are doing this for. I don’t care about the wedding, I care about having a good marriage to the man I love who will call me to tell me he is stuck doing reshoots for a few more days so I have to go to a party by myself and when I roll my eyes, I wonder why I married him in the first place, that is all that matters.” She explained.
Tom stared at her wide-eyed, processing everything before one part of it stuck out above everything else, causing him to pull in for a moment. “Danielle Hiddleston? You would take my name?”
“Yes, why?” In everything, she had not thought that something to focus on.
“You...really?”
“Yes,” She nodded, thinking it an odd thing to say before looking at him. “Would you want me not to?”
“I never thought you would want to.”
“Why wouldn’t I take my husband’s name?”
“Well, you’re a very independent woman, you are getting your name for your work, changing it because of getting married and with how other women keep their name for that reason.”
“Well, that’s their choice, I would like to take yours. I always liked the way families are traced through it and if we have kids, I rather have the same surname as them and their father.”
Tom said nothing in return, he simply leant over and kissed her with as much passion as he could muster at her declaration.

Americans win Ryder Cup in 19-9 rout
SHEBOYGAN, Wis
The Americans won back the Ryder Cup and perhaps a whole lot more Sunday, sending a strong message to Europe with a powerful performance from their youngest team in history.
Scottie Scheffler, one of six Ryder Cup newcomers for the Americans, took down the No. 1 player in the world with a 4-and-3 victory over Jon Rahm as the scoreboards around Whistling Straits quickly filled with American red.
The final blow came from Collin Morikawa, at 24 the youngest player on the team and already a two-time major champion. He holed a 3-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that assured the Americans at least the 14 1/2 points they needed.
Then it was a matter of the final margin.

They never lost a session. They rode the experience of Dustin Johnson, who won all five of his matches and leaned on six Ryder Cup newcomers who combined for a 14-4-3 record.
Daniel Berger won the final hole in the final match for the final point and a 19-9 victory, breaking by a half-point the record margin since Europe became part of the Ryder Cup in 1979.
“This is a new era,” U.S. captain Steve Stricker said. “These guys are young. They want it. They're motivated. They came here determined to win. I could see it in their eyes.”
And he could see it on the scoreboards across Whistling Straits, filled with American red all afternoon in a performance that was dominant from the opening session Friday morning.
Scottie Scheffler, one of six Ryder Cup rookies for the U.S., took down the No. 1 player in the world with a 4-and-3 victory over Jon Rahm. Scheffler won the opening four holes and birdied five of the first six. He was among three rookies who were unbeaten this week.
The clinching blow came from Collin Morikawa, at 24 the youngest player on the team and already a two-time major champion. He made a 3-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that assured the Americans at least the 14 1/2 points they needed.
They wanted more.
“I woke up this morning and I was trying to tell the guys, ‘Let’s get to 20 points,’ because this is going to be the next era of Ryder Cup team for the U.S. side," Patrick Cantlay said after he completed an unbeaten week with a win over Shane Lowry.
"We’ve got a lot of young guys. I think they’re going to be on teams for a long time, and I wanted to send a message.”
Tony Finau had said on the eve of these matches that this was “the big one” because Europe had won nine of the last 12, and the Americans had so many fresh faces without any lasting scars from watching Europe celebrate so much over the years. It was a chance to change the culture, and this was a massive step.
The gallery saved one of its loudest cheers for Stricker, the Wisconsin native who has been at the helm of two blowouts. He guided the U.S. team to a 19-11 victory in the Presidents Cup in 2017, and added his signature piece at Whistling Straits.
Johnson became the first American since Larry Nelson in 1979 to go 5-0, completing his perfect week by beating Paul Casey in a match he never trailed.
Casey, Matt Fitzpatrick and Bernd Wiesberger all failed to win a point. Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter, part of the backbone of European experience, didn't win a match until singles, and by then it was too late.
The Americans were young, yes, and very good, with four of the top five in the world ranking. And they finally played like it. Those four players — Johnson, Morikawa, Cantlay and Xander Schauffele — combined for a 14-1-2 record.
“It's not just the strongest U.S. team I've seen, but they all played well this week,” Lee Westwood said. “Everybody performed and turned up this week. Looks like they are a team.”
Stricker wasn't the only one in tears.
McIlroy led Europe off again and gave Schauffele his first loss of the week. It wasn't nearly enough. All day along the shores of Lake Michigan, the outcome was inevitable.
McIlroy teared up in his interview when talking about how much the Ryder Cup means to him.
“I've never really cried or got emotional over what I've done as an individual. I couldn't give a (expletive)," he said on NBC. "But this team ... to see Sergio (Garcia) break records, to see Jon Rahm come into his own this week, to see one of my best friends, Shane Lowry, make his Ryder Cup debut, all that. It's phenomenal.
“I'm disappointed that I didn't contribute more this week,” he said. “But in two years' time, we'll go again and give it another so. Sorry for swearing, as well.”
As much as this was about a new generation of Americans, this looked to be an aging team of Europeans. They brought winning experience, but not nearly enough form.
Garcia set the Ryder Cup record with 25 matches won in his career. Rahm was the star for Europe, living up to his billing as the No. 1 player by making so many big putts.
Both lost in singles — Garcia to Bryson DeChambeau, while Rahm ran into Scheffler, who delivered big moments of his own this week.
There was little Europe could have done. This U.S. team was loaded and played like it.
“They had a mission this week,” Stricker said. “You could tell.”
The next step is winning on the road, which the Americans haven't done since 1993. Europe still has an 11-9-1 advantage since the Ryder Cup was expanded in 1979 to include the continent..S. side," Patrick Cantlay said, finishing an unbeaten week with a win over Shane Lowry.
The big one became one big rout.
The Americans were young, yes, and very good, with four of the top five in the world ranking. The difference is they finally played like it.
