Scientific knowledge and technology played a significant role in the expansion of colonial rule in India and the consequent incorporation of the Indian sub-continent into the [commercialized, imperial] world-system [...]. The colonization of nature, territory and people in British India led to a mutually constitutive interplay [...].
By the time the East India Company managed to establish a foothold in Bengal in 1757, [...] [a]fter the acquisition of the formal rights to collect revenues in the states of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, the issue of obtaining accurate information about the extent of the produce, the population and other social statistics assumed significance. The detailed scientific surveys [...] were possible due to the large number of amateur scientists employed by the Company. Over time, these surveys played a major role in the transformation of a trading company into a colonial state [...] and the incorporation of India into the modern world-system. [...]
---
Considered the founder of British geography, James Rennell arrived in India in 1760 barely three years after the decisive battle of Plassey. Rennell’s cartographic skills caught the attention of the governor of Bengal presidency, who was ‘anxious to inaugurate some system for correcting and revising the geography of Bengal’ [...]. Rennell’s mapping out in great detail the area under the Company was indispensable for the rationalization of the extraction of surplus, administrative strategies and techniques of control. [...] In 1777 he left for England, and two years later he published the Bengal Atlas that led to his election to the Royal Society. [...] With reference to the ‘science wars’, [...] Rennell’s work was also incorporated in the key text[s] of the time, C. Lyell’s Principles of Geology (1830) [...] [and] the work of [...] Humboldt and Carl Ritter. Rennell’s surveys contributed to the organized [...] surveys [across wider regions of India] that followed after the defeat of Tipu Sultan of Mysore in 1799. [...] [Mysore's] sustained resistance to British power had a major impact on the general consciousness in Britain. [...]
Thomas de Quincey extolled the virtues of the ‘British bulldog’ against [...] the tyrannical ‘Bengal tiger’ [...]. The scientific knowledge that emerged as a consequence of the surveys of Mysore contributed [...] to the consolidation of administrative power [...]. The key figures associated with the surveys [included] Colin Mackenzie [...]. Mackenzie’s ethnographic notes contributed to imperial perceptions of the [...] [people of South Asia] and the grid of anthropological knowledge through which administrative power was deployed. [...]
---
Nature, culture and colonial power were inextricably implicated in the production of scientific knowledge and of colonial society. [...] The establishment the Public Works Department in 1854 provided fresh impetus for the deployment of science and technology in grappling with problems precipitated by colonial rule. Declining revenues for the Company focused attention on gigantic irrigation and other public works projects. [...]
The irrigation projects were expanded to include the railways (1849), the telegraph (1852), and the postal system (1850). Together, they represented the largest state-sponsored enterprise undertaken anywhere at that time. Lord Dalhousie, under whose tenure these projects were inaugurated, declared the railways, the telegraph and the postal system as the ‘three great engines of social improvement’.
His predecessor William Bentinck had already termed the railways ‘the great engine of moral improvement’ in a country ‘cursed from one end to the other by the vice, the ignorance, [...] the barbarous and cruel customs that have been the growth of ages under every description of Asian misrule’ [...]. Later observers were to wax ever more eloquent on the role of the railways in the modernization of India. For W. A. Rogers of the Indian Civil Service, railways ‘are opening the eyes of the people … they teach them that speed attained is time, and therefore money, saved or made’ (Adas1989: 226). The importance of a network of railways, connecting the cotton plantations of the Deccan region to the ports became significant especially during the 'cotton famine' of 1846 [...].
---
Almost immediately after Dalhousie left India, secure in the belief that the double engines of moral improvement and legitimacy were at work, the rebellion of 1857 put an end to such expectations. The rebellion was partly triggered in response to the wide-ranging transformations [...] triggered off by the introduction of [these] new [colonial infrastructures] [...].
In the end, the rebellion was violently suppressed by the very technologies that had precipitated it in the first place. [...]

Mahindra moves Roxor, tractor production to Pontiac
Mahindra has moved production of its tractor and Roxor side-by-side vehicle to Pontiac, 30 miles North of Detroit ,in a consolidation move as the India-based vehicle manufacturer tries for stronger traction in North America. The company has invested nearly $10 million to repurpose its 400,000-square-foot warehouse, formerly a General Motors Co. truck and bus plant, to house its two North America product lines. The move comes with a jobs gain in Michigan and cuts in Pennsylvania, where it will close a contract manufacturing line at the end of the month. As one of India’s largest automakers, Mahindra is working to simplify its business model in North America and focus on two product categories. The Pontiac factory is now the “mother plant” of Roxor and the company’s new production hub for tractors, Mahindra NA President and CEO Viren Popli told Crain’s Detroit Business. Tractor production will also continue in the Houston area, where the company’s North America subsidiary is based. The manufacturing consolidation comes as Mahindra looks to grow market share in the tractor segment, which accounts for most of its U.S. revenue, and increase sales of Roxor after it emerged from litigation over its likeness to Jeep. The company, which had more than $16 billion in global revenue last year, declined to break out North America sales. It also marks a new commitment to its footprint in Michigan, where Mahindra hopes to continue adding headcount after its big growth plans failed to come to fruition when the company entered the state in 2017. “When we first proposed that we wanted to move to Detroit, a lot of people were like, ‘Are you serious? Are you sure you want to do that?’” Popli said. “If you look at the technical capability, the skill sets that you have in Detroit are second to none, so we said we are very happy with our presence in Detroit and that area, and we wanted to double down on that.” Roxor production was moved from a company-owned building in Auburn Hills, 10 miles Northeast of Pontiac at the end of last year, while tractor production began in the leased Pontiac plant at the beginning of the year. The company will keep its technical center in the 25,000-square-foot second floor in Auburn Hills, but it is marketing the building for lease or sale. It is unclear how many employees remain there. Mahindra has about 100 employees in Pontiac, where it recently hired 35 people and is looking to add more as the lines ramp up. Mahindra had 250 employees in Michigan in 2017 with plans to add 400 and invest an additional $600 million, according to a news release at the time. Current total state employment figures were not immediately available. The company had been considering a massive redevelopment of the former General Motors Buick City site in Flint, but that plan unraveled when the U.S. Postal Service contract on which it hinged was awarded to Oshkosh Defense in 2021. That resulted in the company reducing its presence in Michigan as it restructured, said Satyam Talati, managing legal counsel for Mahindra NA. Mahindra closed an Ann Arbor location when it folded its Gen Z electric bike and scooter business in 2020 and it exited a lease in Troy by subleasing to failed EV startup Electric Last Mile Solutions. That space is now occupied by Mullen Automotive, which bought Electric Last Mile’s assets out of bankruptcy. “Pre-COVID, there were a lot of long-term expansion ideas the company had,” Talati told Crain’s. “Once COVID hit, we had to re-evaluate all that.” Now, the focus is just on the two product segments coming down the line in Pontiac. Mahindra is the world’s largest tractor producer by volume, but not in North America, where it trails giants John Deere and Kubota. Popli said the goal is for Roxor to become a meaningful player in the side-by-side market, which totals about 650,000 units annually. “We’re slowly ramping up both the demand and supply, and I see significant potential,” the CEO said. “We have not set for ourselves a target saying we need to be 5 percent or 10 percent of…

Ron Stroman, a USPS Board of Governors member and former deputy postmaster general, emphasized the need to pause new network changes until service meets targets for 2024. Stroman's call comes after 26 senators penned a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and the USPS board, requesting a halt to network modernization changes until an independent regulator evaluates the plan. The USPS is transitioning to a "hub and spoke system" as part of its 10-year reform plan, consolidating regional mail processing operations into larger hubs. While this aims to improve efficiency and reduce the agency's carbon footprint, Stroman highlighted the increased risk of delays with fewer, longer delivery routes. DeJoy acknowledged service issues in Atlanta, Houston, and Richmond, attributing them to the network changes. Despite these challenges, he emphasized the importance of the modernization plan in ensuring the Postal Service's long-term viability. Under the Delivering for America plan, USPS reduced projected operating losses by $15 billion, with a focus on sustainable revenue growth and cost management. The USPS is also advancing its environmental efforts, with plans to introduce a significant electric vehicle fleet. The agency aims to acquire 27,000 new vehicles this year, including 10,000 electric ones. Additionally, USPS intends to purchase over 106,000 new vehicles in the coming years, with 62% being electric. In the second quarter of fiscal 2024, USPS reported a $1.5 billion net loss, a decrease from the previous year. Despite challenges, the agency is striving to boost revenue growth and enhance operational efficiency to achieve long-term financial stability. Are Address Checker Tools Easy to Set up?
Address verification software can reduce costs and customer frustration by ensuring products reach customers reliably. Incorrect or incomplete addresses can cause delays in product delivery, which can damage a company’s reputation and revenue. Fortunately, there are address checking solutions that make it easy to integrate and use for businesses of any size.
Tumblr media
Most address validation tools fall under the category of Data Cleansing Tools or Data Quality Software. This category is more specific than the full suites of management software that can be found in other categories, as they only manage data related to physical identifiers. While the scope is less broad than other categories, these solutions can still be useful to businesses that rely on mail or parcel systems. Some tools even offer additional mailing assistance features like printing labels or shipping barcodes, which can be particularly helpful for organizations that sell and deliver their products via traditional mail systems.
A good address checker solution should be user-friendly and seamlessly integrated with your online forms or mobile apps. Look for an API that can verify, cleanse, and standardize addresses in any language or character script. Moreover, the system should be capable of identifying rooftop latitude and longitude geocoding and de-duplication of address lists. Ideally, it should also be able to identify and handle special characters, abbreviations, and symbols.
An advanced tool such as Lob is highly scalable and offers a bulk verification feature. It provides a high level of accuracy and works for a wide range of countries, including those with different postal formats. In addition, it can ensure that your data is accurate by removing undeliverable records and improving the efficiency of your business operations. It can also reduce the number of errors in product deliveries and minimize undeliverable returns.

Online Child Benefit Claims Revolutionize Parenting
Tumblr media
The Dawn of Digital Convenience
Child Benefit Goes Online: A Major Leap For the first time since its inception in 1977, Child Benefit claims in the UK have taken a significant leap into the digital age. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has announced that parents and guardians can now apply for Child Benefit online, marking a monumental shift from the traditional paper-based process. This change is set to benefit millions of families across the UK, streamlining the process and significantly reducing the waiting time for payments. The transition to an online system represents a major advancement in making government services more accessible and user-friendly, particularly for busy parents and guardians who can now manage their claims more efficiently.   Efficiency and Speed: The New Norm Parents no longer have to fill out lengthy paper forms and wait through long postal delays. The new online system on GOV.UK offers remarkable efficiency and user-friendliness. Tasks that once took up to 16 weeks now only require about 10 minutes to complete, with the potential for processing payments in as little as three days. This rapid processing time revolutionizes the experience for new parents who depend on these benefits to support their growing families. The system's ease and speed will likely encourage more families to take advantage of this essential financial support.
Financial Implications and Benefits
Understanding Child Benefit Rates Child Benefit serves as vital financial support for families, providing £24 per week for the oldest or only child, which totals £1,248 annually. Moreover, for each additional child, families receive £15.90 per week, roughly amounting to £827 per year. Significantly, families can backdate claims for up to 12 weeks, incentivizing them to apply early to maximize their benefits. Consequently, this financial support plays a crucial role in assisting families with the various costs of raising children, ranging from daily expenses to educational needs.   Statements from HMRC Officials Nigel Huddleston, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, emphasized the value of time, especially for families with newborns. The new online system allows parents to focus on what truly matters – family time. Suzanne Newton, HMRC’s Interim Director General for Transformation, highlighted the ease and speed of the new digital process, ensuring families receive essential financial support without unnecessary delays. Their statements reflect the government's commitment to modernizing public services and making them more accessible to all citizens.
User Experience and Feedback
Real-Life Experiences: Blogger Insights Natalie Smith, a blogger known as Frugal Mum, expressed her relief at the elimination of paper forms, emphasizing the convenience of completing applications online at any suitable time. This sentiment is echoed by many parents who have experienced the new system. The ability to apply for Child Benefit online has been a significant relief for many, particularly those juggling the demands of new parenthood with other responsibilities. The feedback from users has been overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the simplicity and speed of the online application process.
Eligibility and Application Tips
Who Can Claim and How Child Benefit is available to parents or guardians responsible for a child under 16, or under 20 if they are in approved education or training. There's no limit on the number of children one can claim for. Claiming Child Benefit also ensures National Insurance credits towards the State Pension and automatic issuance of a National Insurance number for the child at 16. This not only provides immediate financial support but also contributes to the long-term financial security of the family.   Application Process: A Step-by-Step Guide Applicants can begin claiming Child Benefit from the day following a child's birth registration. Firstly, it's crucial to have the birth certificate, bank details, and National Insurance numbers (of both parents, if applicable) prepared. Additionally, for those with adopted children or children born outside the UK, extra information may be necessary. Furthermore, the process is intentionally straightforward and user-friendly, guaranteeing that all eligible families can access the benefits they need without unnecessary stress or complication.
Additional Considerations
Beware of Scams and Stay Informed Customers should be vigilant about HMRC scams and never share login details. For families with children over 3 months old who haven't claimed yet, it's crucial to apply soon to benefit from up to 3 months' backdated Child Benefit. The government is continuously working to raise awareness about scams and provide clear guidance to help individuals protect their personal information and financial assets.   Further Developments and Information HMRC started accepting fully digital claims for Child Benefit from 10 May 2023 for families with children under 6 months old. The HMRC app further facilitates managing Child Benefit, including reporting changes and viewing payment history. This digital transformation is part of a broader effort to modernize government services, making them more efficient and accessible for all UK citizens.   A Step Towards Modern Parenting The introduction of online Child Benefit claims is a significant advancement for UK families, aligning with modern needs and technological advancements. It not only simplifies the process but also ensures quicker financial support, a crucial aspect of raising a family in today's world. This development is a testament to the government's commitment to improving the lives of its citizens through digital innovation and streamlined services.   Sources: THX News, HM Revenue and Customs & Nigel Huddleston MP.
