📯Protect Yourself: Beware of Real Estate Scams on Social Media❗
In today's digital age, the convenience of online platforms has revolutionized the way we search for properties. However, this convenience also comes with its own set of challenges, especially with the rise in real estate scams on social media platforms like Facebook.
🔴The Growing Scam Epidemic Recently, there has been a surge in cases where scammers pose as landlords, enticing potential tenants with attractive properties and then disappearing with their hard-earned money. I, too, fell victim to one such incident when I encountered a suspicious landlord who demanded a security deposit before even allowing a viewing. It became apparent that this person was using a fake account, preying on individuals desperate to find a home in London's competitive rental market.
🔴Staying Vigilant in the Digital Landscape To protect yourself from falling victim to these scams, it's crucial to exercise caution and diligence when searching for properties online. Always deal with trusted real estate agents and use reputable websites like Zoopla and Rightmove, which have stringent verification processes for property listings. These platforms provide a layer of security, ensuring that you are interacting with genuine landlords and agents.
🔴Red Flags to Look Out For: -Too Good to Be True 😍 : Scammers often lure victims with exceptionally low prices for high-end properties. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
-Requests for Advance Payments 💸 : Legitimate landlords will never ask for payment before allowing you to view the property. Be wary of any requests for upfront payments or wire transfers.
-Fake Profiles ❌ : Scammers frequently use fake social media profiles. Look for inconsistencies, lack of activity, or generic profile pictures as potential red flags.
🔴 Reporting Suspicious Activity If you encounter any suspicious listings or interactions, report them immediately to the respective platform and local law enforcement. By staying vigilant and raising awareness about these scams, we can collectively create a safer digital environment for everyone.
Remember, your safety and security should always be a top priority. Stay informed, stay cautious, and together, we can outsmart these scammers and protect our community. 🤝

Warning to all apartment hunters, express extreme caution when looking for a place to rent. Recently there has been an increase in reported rental scams. Kijiji is where most of the people get scammed according to Guelph & District Association of Realtors (GDAR). However, there are other online directories where these people place ads. Watch out for any property that looks great and is being offered for rent at a low price. A red flag is if the landlord says “I’m out of town right now.” and wants a deposit. Do some cross-checking before giving someone your money. Meet the landlord in person, take a tour of the property, and talk to a realtor. Many times realtor may have or know of properties for lease. Call Mike Bolger at (519) 616-2656 for help with real estate. What are your thoughts, leave them down below. http://j.mp/2MCQNit

RENTAL SCAM: DO NOT believe rental emails coming from someone who claims to own the home at 1424 Phyllis St, Lakeland, FL 33803.
This past week I was emailed about an available home for rent. The “owner” claimed to be out of state and wanting to rent this home for a very good price. After filling out a questionnaire, he told me I could be his new tenant, and then asked me to submit my deposit of $1,000 through the cash app - without letting me the inside of the home first. After some research I found out that this person is NOT the owner of this home, and is trying to scam people out of their money. This person emailed me from [email protected].
DONT GET SCAMMED!! This home is NOT for rent, and is on the market as for sale from the actual owner who is the realtor for the property. If this person contacts you about this specific property or ANY rentals for that matter, report them to the online scam report Immediately.
From, a fellow honest individual

Man Almost Falls Victim To Scammer On Facebook Marketplace, Who He Thinks Pirated A Real Apartment Rental Ad CHICAGO (CBS) — A legitimate apartment listing was copied and pasted on a different website – and was apparently used in a scam to get money quick. A Chicago North Side resident hunting for an apartment says he almost fell victim. READ MORE: Good Samaritans Rescue Couple From Sinking Car In Cedar Lake And as CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reported Thursday night, there is a pandemic twist to it. This appears to be a scammer hiding behind text messages and social media accounts, preying on people in a hurry to rent an apartment. For $1,500 a month, Drake Fitzsimmons thought he had found his new rental apartment. He flagged the unit on Facebook marketplace. It was posted by a user who goes by “Stevany Ann Large” and describes herself as “a mother trying her best.” “It looks like a really big place, a really nice place, and close by to where I live now,” Fitzsimmons said. But when Fitzsimmons asked to check the place out on Burling Street near Diversey Parkway – right on the cusp of Lincoln Park and Lakeview – he was told he couldn’t. “They said that there were COVID protocols and I couldn’t go visit the apartment,” he said. But there was a way out of that suggested. “They said, ‘If you’d wire me $60 as an application fee, I’ll send you the application, you can fill it out, and then we can go in and sign the lease right away,’” Fitzsimons said. READ MORE: 2-Year-Old Girl Shot In Little Village: Police He said they were pretty aggressive in trying to get the money too. “That was the biggest sign to me that it must have been a scam,” Fitzsimmons said. So Fitzsimmons did some digging. He found an identical listing on Zillow – owned by someone else and asking for a higher rent of $1,895. He believes the Zillow posting to be legitimate, and the Facebook posting a scam. “It’s an unethical way to make a quick buck,” he said. So CBS 2’s De Mar texted the number for the so-called bogus Facebook listing, asking for information. Within seconds, he was sent pictures of the listing on Burling Street. De Mar went on to ask to see the apartment – and got the exact same message that Fitzsimmons got in his texting correspondent. The apartment was not available to look at because of COVID protocols, and we would have to wire money. De Mar then informed the person at the number that he is with CBS. We waited, and were still waiting for a comment late Thursday. “You used COVID as a reason that we couldn’t meet up. That’s also kind of a cheap way,” Fitzsimmons said. “It’s a global pandemic. Don’t use that as your scam.” MORE NEWS: Alderman Worried About Increase In Weekend Crime After Large Crowds Of Teens Cause Trouble In Downtown Chicago Fitzsimmons reported the Facebook post as a scam. He did not fall victim, but he does want his story to be a warning for others. Renters need to be careful when using websites like Kijiji and Craigslist when looking for rentals. Scammers are the hunt for anyone that's desperate to rent. This also includes vacation rentals for properties in cottage country. They post the rent price below market value and using listing photos found on the internet. Here are four things to watch out for: 1. Can't meet in person 2. Rent price below market value 3. Ask for a Security deposit 4. Tell you to wire funds.
