CAUGHT ‘22

2022 is unlikely, it seems to me, to go down in history as a banner year for popular movies. But even in less auspicious years, there are always some good flicks, and some good or even great scenes or performances in movies that aren't so great overall.

Out of what I saw, here are ten movies that stood out as best for me this past year:

Nope--Jordan Peele's latest is probably the best UFO movie since Close Encounters, though it has a more sinister edge. It's wildly original, funny and creepy sci-fi/horror, yet it also carries the heroic charge of a good western.

Good Night Oppy--This documentary about the Mars rovers Opportunity and Spirit has interesting information about the Red Planet, but it's really about the way the NASA nerds anthropomorphized the robots and fretted over them and cheered them on and ultimately grieved over them. In an entirely unpretentious way, the movie hints at the question of where sentience comes from.

The Duke--This pandemic-delayed release was, I thought, perhaps the most overlooked and delightful movie of the year. Jim Broadbent is splendid as Kempton Bunton, a cab driver, factory worker and anti-television fee protestor who in 1965 confessed to stealing Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London; Helen Mirren is his fed-up wife. The direction, by the late Roger Michell, is warm, graphically lively and period-rich.

Everything Everywhere All At Once--Family drama, immigrant saga, sly comedy, martial arts actioner, Matrix-style sci-fi adventure and more are mashed-up in this freaky yarn from writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert that tries to live up to its title. It's epic, intimate, silly and profound. All at once.

Thirteen Lives--Dramatizing a technically complicated rescue mission in detail, Ron Howard is in his element in this moving account of the rescue of twelve Thai kids and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in 2018. A little tough if you're claustrophobic, but a true feel-good movie.

The Whale--Brendan Fraser gives a luminous, possibly generational performance as Charlie, a morbidly obese English teacher trying to reconnect with his furious estranged daughter. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the movie is a little heavy and one-note aside from the star, but Fraser's radiance shines through the prosthetics.

Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down--Infuriating because of what Giffords lost when she was shot in 2011; inspirational because of how much she got back, and how courageously she refused to give in to despair. Directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West build the movie around how central music was to Giffords' recovery.

The Fabelmans--In Steven Spielberg's loosely autobiographical coming-of-age yarn, scripted by Tony Kushner, the focus is largely on the parents, beautifully played by Paul Dano and Michelle Williams. The movie isn't a grand slam, but it's fascinating, and it has the best final shot of the year.

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On--This feature expansion of the 2010 viral short by Dean Fleischer-Camp, with Jenny Slate voicing the tiny title character, is sunny and hilarious, but with improbably dramatic and poignant undertones. Isabella Rossellini is exquisite as the voice of Marcel's "Nan."

The Banshees of Inisherin--Martin McDonagh's black comedy about the agonies of friendship goes so sour in its later acts that I almost didn't put it on the list. But the brilliance of the initial conception and, especially, the magnificent acting of Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon demand its inclusion.

May 6, 2021: The Martian (2015) (Recap: Part Two)

Man, this movie’s pretty great so far.

It’s holding up to what I remember from the book, which I also really enjoyed. I highly recommend the audiobook, by the way. 100% you should check that out.

Anyway, back to it! Here’s Part One for you!

Recap (2/2)

The airlock EXPLODES due to a hole and decompression. Not only is his suit kinda fucked, but the farm in the Hab is ruined. All of the crops die, cutting down his time to 606 days, long before a mission will reach them with supplies. Time is now far shorter than it should be. But despite this, NASA and JPL get together to get a probe to Mark sooner rather than later.

Mark manages to fix the Hab, but he’s now pretty fucked indeed. It’s also considerably expensive and dangerous to launch a new probe. But Teddy decides to forego safety inspections for it in order to expediate the process. Which is not a good idea, but still what they’re doing. And amidst all of that, we meet Rich Purnell (Donald Glover), an astrodynamicist that works at JPL, who comes up with a breakthrough. I’m sure we’ll get back to him later.

I hope it’s good, because the rocket launch goes QUITE poorly, as the probe, called Iris, explodes in mid-air, destroying hope for support to Mark. And this means, well...Mark’s done. He’s basically resigned himself to death on the desolate red planet. He writes a letter to Lewis about this, asking him to go to his parents after he dies, and give them a very heartfelt goodbye message. It’s heartbreaking.

Now, we go to China, where scientists for the China National Space Administration Zhu Tao (Chen Shu) and Guo Ming (Eddy Ko) secretly plot to get booster rockets to the Americans in order to help them make another probe in order to Mark.

Rich, meanwhile, makes his way to Kapoor and proposes a plan to save Mark: by getting the Hermes BACK to Mars. The Hermes is the pick-up ship that the Ares III crew is currently on, heading back to Mars. Rich suggests using Earth’s gravity to essentially slingshot the ship BACK to Mars to pick-up Mark. However, Teddy completely rejects the idea, as it poses considerable risk to the Ares III astronauts. And Mitch is PISSED. And right after, the instructions are somehow leaked to the crew, putting the decision in their hands. And they agree to do it, unanimously and without question, despite the technical mutiny as well as the extra time in space.

It’s pretty obvious that it’s Mitch who leaked the plans and caused this, leading to Teddy firing him AFTER this dangerous mission is completed. The plan set in motion, the two separate teams work on two separate planets in order to plan this maneuver successfully. The astronauts on Hermes tell their families of their extended stay in space, and the Iris is planned for launch and interception with the ship. And all of that is a rousing success. And now...now for the hard part.

After over a year on Mars, Mark’s been through a hell of a lot of shit. Now visibly thinner and sporting a beard, Watney gets into the Rover to make his way to the Schiaparelli crater, where he’ll use the Ares IV mission launcher to meet up with the Hermes in space. He notes that, as Mars is legally international waters and he’s stealing a ship outside of express legal orders, making him a space pirate. Which is badass, and I love it so much. Mark AKA Captain Blondebeard, takes the 90-day journey to the crater.

On Earth, we now face a different issue: how to get Mark onto the Hermes from Mars. The Hermes can’t enter Mars’ orbit and still get back home. Which means that Mark’s gonna have to meet them in the ship (called the MAV) above Mars’ orbit. However, to do that, they need to strip the MAV of parts to make it faster, and this includes the controls, and the entire front of the ship. Yeah. Terrible option, but the only one they have. And so, despite Mark’s understandable hesitation, they move forward with the plan to strip the ship and remove all of its parts.

The Hermes crew also prepares, as the plan is to essentially catch Watney in mid-orbit. And on Earth, the entire world is watching as the day arrives. It’s a big moment, and a scary one at that. Before the leaves, Watney shaves, and he boards the ship. As the MAV launches into orbit, with nothing between Watney and space but a canvas tarp, Watney begins to cry in fear and happiness for leaving the planet. But in the launch, the tarp flies off, and while the ship launches into space, Watney passes out in the process, due to the increased Gs. But the Hermes is too far away to grab him, leading to Commander Lewis to use boosters to get to the MAV, at some risk.

Intercept distance is fixed, but the speed is now a problem. Lewis now makes a MASSIVE risk: purposefully breach the ship to create enough explosive decompression to launch the ship in the right direction to get them better aligned and lessen the problem of velocity. This will also allow Beck to use a tether to grab Mark on the outside. Despite this being an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE idea, Vogel makes a bomb to cause the decompression. As Beck sets it, Johanssen kisses his helmet, which is cute.

But it’s still not enough, and they won’t be close enough to grab Mark at this velocity. Lewis gets in her own suit, and replaces Beck so as not to lose another crew member. The bomb blows, an the propulsion of the escaping internal atmosphere pushes the ship to get to the right speed to get to Mark. Lewis is hooked up to a tether, and propels down towards the AV. But STILL, it isn’t close enough! So, Mark breaches his suit in his hands, and uses the escaping atmosphere to blast himself forward like Iron Man. And despite a near miss...

It works! IT FUCKING WORKS! And I knew it would, but GODDAMN!!! This is a beautiful reunion! I and the world celebrate Mark’s rescue, and it’s genuinely tearjerking for me. My God, this is fantastic. After 560 days...Mark is finally going home. And from there, on Earth five years later, a now-recovered Mark teaches astronaut candidates about how to survive in space, were they ever to wind up in the same situation that he’s in. And let’s be honest, he’s uniquely qualified for this position. The Ares V mission is about to launch, with Martinez on board. The Chinese scientists, also working with NASA officially now, watch on.

Lewis and Vogel watch on with their families; Johanssen and Beck watch as Johanssen gives birth to their first child together; Teddy, Vincent, Annie, and Mindy watch on from NASA, as Bruce and Rich (working with them now) also celebrate the successful launch at JPL. And Watney...Watney’s alive.

...This movie got snubbed, huh?

The Borgias Review 02.01 “The Borgia Bull”

And it’s time again for “2 historians judging watching The Borgias”. As said in the post which contains the complete review of The Borgias season 1: This is for entertainment only! We do not intent to hurt any fans with this. Since we both are pretty aware about this time period and study history in our bachelor and master rn we can see what works and what doesn’t in this show and for some people this might not only be funny but also interesting to read (even though this is by far no analysis!). For the time references I apologize again because it might differ from player to player. 

And because of the current situation it is not possible for us to do a The Borgias marathon again since meeting physically is…problematic. So we decided to watch the episodes while doing a WhatsApp call every Tuesday evening. This is why each episode of season two will get it’s own post this time yay! :D We hope you enjoy!

What really made me upset was that the episode made it look like the Borgia initiated the Renaissance like: So yeah, here is the Renaissance, have fun! And then they start to celebrate roman feasts which some people would call ehm idk maybe... HERESY?????

Leni’s general thoughts: My PoOr BaBy AlPhOnSo of NaPeLs T_____T how can they torture my precious psycho kid Alphonso in that way??? Fake!Charles, I hate youuuuuu *cries for 10 hours straight*. And yeah, I think this episode’s plot was pretty boring. I enjoyed the few scenes with Lucrezia but kinda got the feeling that Giulia played a more important role than her now. And of course some things just did not work (like almost everything).

Update on Opportunity Rover after Martian Dust Storm

NASA - Mars Exploration Rover B (MER-B) patch. Oct. 12, 2018 One month since increasing their commanding frequency, engineers have yet to hear from NASA's Opportunity rover. NASA hasn't set any deadlines for the mission but will be briefed later this month on the progress and prospects for the recovery campaign being carried out at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. JPL engineers are employing a combination of listening and commanding methods in case Opportunity is still operational. It's possible that a layer of dust deposited on the rover's solar panels by the recent global dust storm is blocking sunlight that could recharge its batteries. No one can tell just how much dust has been deposited on its panels.

A windy period on Mars -- known to Opportunity's team as "dust-clearing season" -- occurs in the November-to-January time frame and has helped clean the rover's panels in the past. Both Opportunity and its twin, Spirit, were designed to last only 90 days on the Martian surface, with the expectation that the planet's extreme winters and dust storms could cut their mission short. Updated at 2:45 p.m. PDT on Sept. 11, 2018 Scientists reviewing data from the Mars Color Imager (MARCI) aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) have determined that the tau estimate (a measure of the amount of haze in the Martian atmosphere) in the skies above the rover Opportunity has been below 1.5 for two consecutive measurements. With more sunlight reaching the rover's solar array, the Opportunity team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, are increasing the frequency of commands it beams to the 14-plus-year-old rover via the dishes of NASA's Deep Space Network from three times a week to multiple times per day. Passive listening for Opportunity will also continue to be performed by JPL's Radio Science Group, which records radio signals emanating from Mars with a very sensitive broadband receiver. The original story has been updated in paragraph six to reflect NASA review at each step of the recovery process. Updates on the 2018 dust storm and tau can be found here. A planet-encircling dust storm on Mars, which was first detected May 30 and halted operations for the Opportunity rover, continues to abate. With clearing skies over Opportunity’s resting spot in Mars’ Perseverance Valley, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, believe the nearly 15-year-old, solar-powered rover will soon receive enough sunlight to automatically initiate recovery procedures -- if the rover is able to do so. To prepare, the Opportunity mission team has developed a two-step plan to provide the highest probability of successfully communicating with the rover and bringing it back online.

Assuming that we hear back from Opportunity, we will begin the process of discerning its status and bringing it back online.” The rover’s last communication with Earth was received June 10, and Opportunity’s current health is unknown. Opportunity engineers are relying on the expertise of Mars scientists analyzing data from the Mars Color Imager (MARCI) aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) to estimate the tau near the rover’s position. “The dust haze produced by the Martian global dust storm of 2018 is one of the most extensive on record, but all indications are it is finally coming to a close,” said MRO Project Scientist Rich Zurek at JPL. “MARCI images of the Opportunity site have shown no active dust storms for some time within 3,000 kilometers [about 1,900 miles] of the rover site.” With skies clearing, mission managers are hopeful the rover will attempt to call home, but they are also prepared for an extended period of silence. "If we do not hear back after 45 days, the team will be forced to conclude that the Sun-blocking dust and the Martian cold have conspired to cause some type of fault from which the rover will more than likely not recover," said Callas. At that point, the team will report to NASA HQ to determine whether to continue with the strategy or adjust it. Callas added, "In the unlikely chance that there is a large amount of dust sitting on the solar arrays that is blocking the Sun's energy, we will continue passive listening efforts for several months." The additional several months for passive listening are an allowance for the possibility that a Red Planet dust devil could come along and literally dust off Opportunity’s solar arrays. Such “cleaning events” were first discovered by Mars rover teams in 2004 when, on several occasions, battery power levels aboard both Spirit and Opportunity increased by several percent during a single Martian night, when the logical expectation was that they would continue to decrease. These cleaning dust devils have even been imaged by both rovers on the surface and spacecraft in orbit (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8lfJ0c7WQ8 and  https://mars.nasa.gov/resources/5307/the-serpent-dust-devil-of-mars/). The chances are small that dust accumulation would be the root cause of Opportunity’s lack of communication. Nonetheless, each day during the passive phase, JPL’s Radio Science group will scour the signal records taken by a very sensitive broadband receiver of radio frequencies emanating from Mars, looking for a sign that the rover is trying to reach out.

Even if the team hears back from Opportunity during either phase, there is no assurance the rover will be operational. The impact of this latest storm on Opportunity’s systems is unknown but could have resulted in reduced energy production, diminished battery performance, or other unforeseen damage that could make it difficult for the rover to fully return online. While the situation in Perseverance Valley is critical, the rover team is cautiously optimistic, knowing that Opportunity has overcome significant challenges during its 14-plus years on Mars. The rover lost use of its front steering -- its left-front in June of 2017, and right front in 2005. Its 256-megabyte flash memory is no longer functioning. The team also knows that everything about the rover is well beyond its warranty period -- both Opportunity and its twin rover, Spirit, were constructed for 90-day missions (Spirit lasted 20 times longer and Opportunity is going on 60 times). The rovers were designed to travel about 1,000 yards, and Opportunity has logged more than 28 miles. Through thick and thin, the team has seen their rover soldier on. Now, Opportunity engineers and scientists of Opportunity are planning, and hoping, that this latest dilemma is just another bump in their Martian road. “In a situation like this you hope for the best but plan for all eventualities,” said Callas. “We are pulling for our tenacious rover to pull her feet from the fire one more time. invidious consumption

i was crippled with anxiety in the weeks leading up to my 21st birthday (just last year! wow, time sure does fly!) terrified that one of my earnest girlfriends, in an innocent but spectacularly misguided attempt to celebrate me, would surprise me by hiring a limo** - with a sunroof that i would be expected to stick my upper body out of - to drive us around times square because she had misinterpreted my denouncement of a limo full of rabble (one of whom - having witnessed my disdainful facial expression - had rolled down her window to look at me pityingly and emit with no irony the query, “jealous?”) as repressed curiosity… when in actuality it had been a manifestation of my vehement distaste for unfettered, garish exhibitions of joy.

while the last time i was flailing my body through a limo’s sunroof was never, i can say with the utmost confidence, i could go to my grave never having had 50-100% of my body in a limo and my life will have been full.

double ditto having a man in a thong swathe me in a sash and other bridal accoutrements and proceed to rub his muscles on me in the name of tradition at a bachelorette party (which is why i don’t allow anyone near me who owns a michael kors purse, whose favorite movie stars reese witherspoon, anyone who has seen magic mike in a theatre, or anyone who thinks instagramming a glass of wine with a caption about “relaxing” is an appropriate thing to instagram… also anyone who has ever posted a collage or that “year in review” on instagram. also anyone who wishes family members who don’t have instagram a happy birthday/father’s day/mother’s day etc. on instagram. #instagram #spon)

fear of having to refuse to partake in the activities someone has planned for me because they assault my sensibilities - and therefore having no celebration at all - has not stopped me from expecting to be surprised in some way on my birthday (september 26th. that is my birthday) every year since i turned 14 my first year at boarding school.

my parents are not “fun” people. they don’t “do” surprises. my mom is not “warm” and my dad is not “sneaky”.

despite this, i was absolutely convinced that my parents - who lived in new york and had acrimoniously divorced the summer before - would surprise me for my birthday and, i don’t know… take me to dinner and look at me, my mother contemplating why she’d crossed the atlantic ocean to do this when she could have just not and instead she could be in new york at like, the chobani store (this is a private joke for myself about my mom and her v specific, repellent personality). but no, instead, she’s in london with her ex husband… watching their daughter eat her weight in prosciutto and not even have the decency to have adopted a british accent yet.

honestly, the best possible outcome was no less grim than this… and yet!

when i woke up, assuming they’d taken a red eye, i calculated time for collecting their bags, getting lost and added two hours in case my recalcitrant mother had gotten detained for saying “bomb” on an airplane in a post 9/11 world - something she has literally done for sport; i have borne witness to it.

so, at lunch until the end of the school day, i stared out the window, waiting for them to arrive. when school ended and they hadn’t arrived, i expected them to surprise me in the dining hall at dinner. they didn’t. when my dad called me after study hall to wish me a happy birthday i thought, “oh maybe just my mom is coming…”

neither of them showed… nor did they the next three birthdays i had there, even though every year i woke up with the same eagerness of anticipation.

(that christmas, aged 14, i learned there was no santa.)

the perpetuation of this surprise fantasy allows me to excitedly anticipate a thoughtfully placid fete… and then inevitably gently fails to come to fruition, effectively allowing me to enjoy a day pleasantly marked by sangfroid, as i consider the calamity that “could have been” while at a dinner i have guilted one to three of my five friends into attending at the last minute!

and THAT is the cycle of my birthday and the 364 leading up to my birthday. (my birthday is a lifestyle, just like drake said.)

(an alternative explanation is that i continue to delude myself into thinking someone will plan a surprise party for me *in order* to be disappointed so that i may blame any potential melancholy on someone (everyone!) else instead of my hatin ass for being a human being who is impossible to please and whose inability to literally be “fun loving” and embrace gauche celebratory activities has barred her from ever experiencing the type of youthful excitement katy perry songs are about. this is a shitty but also v honest assessment. thank you for reading.)

ALL THAT BEING SAID … if you’ve been here before, you know my hatred of vulgar displays of birth nostalgia does not prevent me from loving being celebrated privately and has never stopped me from treating my birthday like it’s a wedding and creating a tacky but v self aware registry for the occasion.

sunglasses chain thing

i am v embarrassed to put this here because i was directed to it from some bop’s instagram i never should have been on… but we all make mistakes and now you can literally pay for mine. a yoga mat

it’s a long story… i saw a spider in my home and my neighbor called the police on me because i was yelling and crying so loudly she thought i was being murdered. but in actuality, i was heaving a yoga mat across the room to cover the intruder... and then i stomped it to smithereens, effectively rendering the yoga mat - which had previously never been in use - useless. i need another one. and this one is one of the most expensive ones i could find. it’s luxuriously dense, like my cerebrum.

The Deflated Birthday

Duke celebrated his birthday. He turned 12 and relished the opportunity of having a whole day when attention would be focused on him.

The day began with The Little Sister singing “Happy Birthday” to him while he was eating his cold cereal at the breakfast table. Before the last “…to you” had faded, The Mother appeared by his side with a fresh doughnut from the neighborhood bakery and it had a single candle stuck in it. Duke smiled, said, “Thanks!” and devoured the doughnut in just a few bites.

He put on his jacket and headed out the door for school.

Monte joined him on his walk as he went past his house and Jimmy, Mike, and Ricky joined them a half block later. Even though it was his birthday, Duke tried to contain any excitement and pretended to be nonchalant.

“ Who got that math homework done?”

“I did. It wasn’t hard.”

“I couldn’t do it so I’m gonna ask Mr. Beach about it before class starts.”

“Mike, we’ve been in school for three months. His name is Mr. Veach. Veach.”

“I know. I was just funnin’ ya.”

“Did anyone watch ‘Dragnet’ on TV last night?”

Duke couldn’t believe it. No one was saying a thing about today being his birthday.  Maybe when he got to school, someone would say something.

Homer and Larry and Jerry were waiting by the door when Duke and the guys walked up.

“Has the warning bell rung yet?”

“No, do you want to wait or go on up?”

“Let’s go on up. Mike has a math question for Mr. Beach.”

“I know it’s Mr. Veach. I said I was just funnin’ ya.”

The boys started their school day and Duke spent the rest of the day waiting for someone — anyone — to acknowledge his birthday. During every lesson, at every recess, during lunch: not a word about Duke’s birthday.

He had one opportunity at the last recess. They were playing “Red Rover” — .the popular recess game where two teams of kids stood in two lines facing each other on opposite sides of the playground, having joined hands with their teammates. The captain of one team summoned a player from the other team to run across the playground at top speed and attempt to break through the joined hands in the opponent’s line.  

Homer was on Duke’s team and had shouted, “Red Rover, Red Rover, send Tank McShurley over!” Tank was named “Tank” because he was a HUGE kid from the other sixth grade classroom, and when he lumbered across the playground, he headed straight for Duke’s position, thinking that was where the hand grip was weakest. If Tank didn’t break through, he would have to join Homer and Duke’s team. If he DID break through the line, he could return to his own team, taking one of those two weak players back with him. Tank didn’t break through. Instead, he collided with Duke and fell to the ground on top of him. As Tank stood up, he looked down at Duke and said, “What do you think this is? Your birthday?”

It was almost as though no one had heard him because when they returned to the classroom after recess, it was back to the normal school routine. As the clock edged to dismissal, Duke regretted having a birthday during the school year. His birthday may as well have been during summer vacation. In fact, that would have been more fun.

Just before the bell for dismissal, Mr. Veach reviewed the next day’s assignments and made some announcements. The last announcement was: “And today is Duke’s birthday. He is 12.”

His classmates started singing “Happy Birthday” to him and just as they sang “…dear Duke…” the dismissal bell rang. They got up to leave and finished the birthday song for Duke as they walked through the door and into the hall.

Duke’s cheeks were still red as he joined his buddies for the walk home.

According to Monte, “We knew it was your birthday all along. We even passed the word at school but told everybody not to say anything until the end of the day.”

Mike said, “We were just funnin’ with ya!”

“You’re 12 already? I won’t be twelve until next spring,”

“Me either! Geez, Duke you’re the old man of our class.”

Homer pointed out that he was twelve in September. As they neared their neighborhood, and began to split up to go to their separate homes, Monte said “Happy birthday, Duke” and Homer added “Yeah, happy birthday, old man!”

That night, at dinner, Duke told the family about his birthday experience at school. He showed them the scrapes on his elbows from the tackle by Tank. The Mother brought out a homemade chocolate cake with twelve lit candles. They all sang “Happy Birthday” to him and he blew out the candles. The Little Sister pointed out, “You didn’t make a wish!” and Duke just presented an exaggerated, fake smile in her direction.

The Little Sister gave him a homemade birthday card. The Mother gave him two wrapped presents. Duke unwrapped them slowly and carefully, to build suspense for the onlookers. The first gift contained a dress shirt.

“A shirt? That’s nice.”

“You needed a nice dress shirt,” The Mother added, “so there you go.”

Duke opened the second present. It was a plastic model kit of a stagecoach.

The Mother continued, “We knew how much you liked to build models and how much you liked western movies and western TV shows, so we — your father and I — thought this would be the perfect gift.”

She sensed disappointment in Duke’s reaction. “You can glue it together and paint it up and you will have a unique model for your collection. I’ll bet no one else around here has anything like that.”

“Georgie, maybe” Duke suggested.

The Mother turned and retrieved something from the sewing machine cabinet. She placed a third gift —  unwrapped — on the table at Duke’s place.

“It’s deodorant,” she said. “You’re coming of an age when you’re starting to stink.”

NASA's Mars 2020 concept is perfect for Space Batman

NASA has shown off a futuristic-looking concept of the Mars 2020 rover with a shiny black body and intimidating wheels at the Kennedy Space Center. If you're thinking that it looks like it popped right out of a superhero movie or a shiny video game than an actual vehicle meant to explore the red planet, then you're right. The agency isn't quite done conjuring up a final design for the vehicle: this 28-foot-long machine was actually created as a showpiece for its "Summer of Mars" program. NASA says it might take a couple of elements from this concept, though, perhaps to add a dash of panache to the actual rover.

Even though the actual Mars 2020 will not look exactly like this, its creators didn't build it blindly: They conjured up the concept with the help of NASA's subject matter experts. They came up with the design knowing that the front area will be equipped with radio and GPS and that the detachable back will serve as a mobile laboratory. Mars 2020 will drill into the planet's surface to look for signs of past life and will determine whether future human settlers can take advantage of Martian resources like water and oxygen.

NASA Kennedy's PR assistant manager Rebecca Shireman described "Summer of Mars" as an "all-encompassing effort to review the history of our efforts to explore Mars and look ahead to what is being planned." She said it's meant to "encourage young people to want to learn more about being a part of the effort to go to Mars." That's why the concept will tour the East Coast from July to August -- keep an eye out for the locations where you'll be able to see it for yourself. It will make its way back to the Kennedy Space Center after its tour, though, since it's slated to be part of an Astronaut Training Experience attraction launching this fall.

Timothy Lasiter is the owner of a company named, Dream Catcher Publishing House as well as a published author of 7 books. He has a pen name of Sean Allen Poe, and Oteana Harris as well as other writers that are signed to his publishing house. His specialty genre is science fiction, but he can also write horror and other genres. He currently has 1 completed novel titled “The Boogeyman.”

Review & Wrap-Up:

 I love when Indie authors come to me, asking for a review or a blurb! It not only makes my day, but makes me excited to help get their names and works out there for others to enjoy as well! So when Timothy Lasiter came to me, asking for my review, I was elated for the chance!

Timothy sent me a copy of Forbidden Fruit, one of the short stories in his Up All Night collection. When I began reading it I didn’t realize that it was a short story. I wish I would have realized a little earlier in the process so that I could have requested a couple more short stories from Timothy to have more to go on for my review when it comes to his works in general. However, I did find Forbidden Fruit to be an enjoyable read all on its own.

I did find the story to be a little jumpy at times. You know when you watch a movie and can obviously tell that the scene was shot multiple times because a prop is clearly there in one frame, but not there in the next, this is the feeling I got several times while reading the story. I had to go back several times and make sure I was on the same page as the author.

Jumpy timeline/actions aside, the story itself was intriguing. There is definitely a mysteriousness to it that your brain is trying to process: who is this mistress; why are we focusing solely on her; what is this power that she seems to hold over everyone? All of these questions are present and keep you guessing all the way to the end!

Speaking of the end (without giving anything away), I think it’s a little unfinished. There is still an edge of mystery to it, which I like, but the ending feels more like the end of a chapter in a book rather than the ending of a story. I would like there to be a bit more polishing and finishing on this ending so it feels more like a cliff hanger rather than a guillotine.

Overall, I think if some editing were done to the timeline and ending, this short story would be one that even the KING of sci-fi horror himself would enjoy reading!

 How Much Money Will Hugh Hefner's Wife Get? By

The wife of deceased Playboy founder Hugh Hefner will reportedly not receive any additional financial assets.

Crystal Harris began dating Hefner in January 2009 and the couple were eventually married at the Playboy Mansion on New Year’s Eve in 2012. Due to an “ironclad” prenuptial contract, she will not inherit any of Hefner’s fortune, Us Weekly reported shortly after the couple married.

Hefner, who died Wednesday at the age of 91, estimated his wealth to be $43 million during divorce proceedings from Bridget Marquardt in 2009. At the time of his death, he was estimated to be worth roughly $50 million. 

Hefner’s assets will reportedly be divided among his four children, the University of Southern California film school and a number of charities.

Harris, 31, met Hefner in 2008 and the two began dating in 2009. She appeared in the final season of the reality show "The Girls Next Door" and was Playboy’s Playmate of the Month in December 2009. Hefner proposed to Harris on Christmas Eve in 2010.

In June 2011, she called off the wedding five days before the nuptials were set to take place.

The July 2011 issue of Playboy featured Harris on the cover with the headline, "America’s Princess, Introducing Mrs. Crystal Hefner," but the magazine included a sticker on the cover that read "Runaway Bride." Later that month, she appeared on Howard Stern's radio show to address the breakup, claiming she was "not turned on by Hef." Hefner tweeted that Harris had a "change of heart."

"I called it off because I didn’t think it was the right thing for me to do. It was mutual between Hef and I," she said. "There was no fight, we sat down and we talked about it."

Harris and Hefner reconciled one year later. Afterward, Harris apologized for her comments to Stern and said she and Hefner were excited about their upcoming marriage

“It meant more security, knowing that I am the one for him. There are always girls in and out and always the feeling of maybe being replaced,” Harris said. “He made sure I didn’t feel that way anymore and that was what the wedding was all about.”
