Critics on Monday condemned far-right Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what one group called a "hateful and dangerous" campaign speech in which he claimed that Muslim "infiltrators" would steal Indians' wealth if the opposition wins parliamentary elections that began last week.
Speaking to supporters at a rally in the western state of Rajasthan on Sunday, Modi said that the manifesto of the opposition Indian National Congress (INC) party details how to calculate "the amount of gold that mothers and sisters have" so that it can be redistributed to Muslims.
"When they were in power, they said Muslims have first right over resources," the prime minister claimed out of context. "They will gather all your wealth and redistribute among those who have more children. They will distribute it among infiltrators. Do you think your hard-earned money should be given to infiltrators? Would you accept this?"
Members of Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—which does enjoy the support of a significant number of Indian Muslims—have often portrayed Muslims as outsiders. BJP officials have also pushed a baseless conspiracy narrative roughly analogous to U.S. white supremacists' "great replacement" theory, in this case positing that Muslim migrants and rapidly reproducing Indian Muslims will eventually outnumber Hindus—who make up around 80% of the country's 1.4 billion people.
Modi's remarks came a day after India's seven-step election of 543 members of the Lok Sabha, or lower legislative house, began. Modi is running for a third consecutive term. He's being challenged by INC President Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, the upper legislative house. Results will be announced on June 4.
Kharge responded to Modi's remarks by blasting the "panic-filled" address as "not only a hate speech but also a well-thought-out ploy to divert attention" by the prime minister, the BJP, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)—a fascist-inspired political and paramilitary movement whose brand of Hindu supremacy heavily influenced the rise of the BJP.
"Lying for power, making baseless references to things, and making false accusations on opponents is the specialty of the training of RSS and BJP," Kharge said, adding that Indians "are no longer going to fall prey to this lie."

India and Pakistan have exchanged lists of their respective nuclear installations and facilities through diplomatic channels in New Delhi (India) and Islamabad(Pakistan).This exchange falls under the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities between the two countries.
Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack Against Nuclear Installations and Facilities
- The Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities was signed on 31st December, 1988, by the then Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi.
- The treaty came into force on 27th January, 1991.
- The recent one is the 33rd consecutive exchange of such lists between the two countries, the first one having taken place on 01st January, 1992.
- Background: While other factors might have played a role, the direct trigger for the negotiation and signing of the agreement was the tension generated by the 1986-87 Brasstacks exercise by the Indian Army.
- Operation Brasstacks was a military exercise conducted in the Indian state of Rajasthan, near the Pakistan border.
- Mandate: The agreement mandates both countries to inform each other about any nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the agreement on the 1st of January of every calendar year, providing a confidence-building security measure environment.
- According to the agreement, the term ‘nuclear installation or facility’ includes nuclear power and research reactors, fuel fabrication, uranium enrichment, iso-topes separation, and reprocessing facilities as well as any other installations with fresh or irradiated nuclear fuel and materials in any form and establishments storing significant quantities of radioactive materials.

Projections for 2024 Lok Sabha elections
The last elections for 2023 are over. Now it's time to prepare for the 2024 General Elections. BJP showed that it can beat anti-incumbency factors and return with a bigger share of seats. INC is at a loss as to where it went wrong. Were they wrong from the beginning or did that happen after the nominations were filed? Success in Karnataka elections barely 6 months back put them in an overconfident mode and thought the same formula works for all seasons. Whoever thought so made the only terrible mistake of their life in the Hindi belt or the cow belt as most political commentators would like to call those states - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh.
I did some simple calculations and arrived at my seat projections for 2024. No surprises. NDA is returning to power, and BJP is improving its 2019 tally. States where they were expected to lag behind are now moving towards BJP. Congress party & I.N.D.I alliance are in for a big shock when the results are announced in mid-May 2024.
BJP may improve its tally and will walk away with 308-360 seats and NDA allies will contribute another 20-25 seats. If NDA comes with the slogan "abki baar Modi sarkar aur 400 paar", don't be surprised; it will definitely happen.
In the south, Karnataka BJP is likely to lose a couple of seats. They can still come back with a decent number of seats - between 20 to 24. Telangana 4 to 6, Tamil Nadu and Kerala there is a fair chance of them opening their account with one or two seats. Andhra I don't see anything happening now, but as election dates come near, things can change. Bihar & Maharashtra BJP will improve its tally, but the allies will underperform.
BJP will win between 310-360 seats and allies will add another 20 seats taking the NDA tally to 330 to 380 seats. Another projection will be given in mid-January 2024.

What Is 'North vs South' Debate That Prompted PM's Tweet With Emojis
A DMK MP’s ‘Gaumutra states’ remark in Parliament has added fuel to the ‘North vs South’ debate that has been raging since the BJP’s poll wins in the heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and the Congress’s victory in Telangana.
The BJP’s critics claim it is the Hindi heartland where its ideology finds resonance, and that the southern part of the country has rejected the party. The BJP says the ‘North vs South’ debate is divisive and reeks of its rivals’ reluctance to accept poll setbacks.
‘North vs South’
Earlier this year, the Congress won the Assembly polls in Karnataka, snatching from the BJP its only foothold in the South. The Congress victory in Telangana consolidates its position in the South. Among the other southern states, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are held by the Left and the DMK, respectively. Andhra Pradesh, however, is ruled by the YSR Congress party, which has backed the BJP on crucial national issues.
For the BJP, victories in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh put the heartland states completely under its control. Besides these three states, the party holds Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh — all of immense political significance. The ‘North vs South’ construct also feeds off the cultural and linguistic differences, and higher GDP, higher literacy rates and lower population in southern states. Those pushing the ‘north vs south’ argument also point to migration from the northern states to southern states for employment.
The Flashpoint
As trends on counting day indicated that the BJP was winning in the heartland states and the Congress in Telangana, Congress leader Praveen Chakravarty posted on X, “The South-North boundary line getting thicker and clearer!” Congress MP Karti Chidambaram posted just two words “the South”. Several prominent critics of the BJP pointed to high literacy rates in the South and suggested that the BJP’s policies and ideologies only manage to convince votes in the northern part of the country. Others said the 2024 poll fight will be a fight between ‘north vs south’.
These posts sparked a huge row, with BJP leaders accusing Mr Chakravarty of pushing divisive politics. He deleted the post later, but the debate did not die down. Mr Chidambaram tried to steer clear of the row. On Mr Chakravarty’s post, he said, “I have not suggested anything like that. It is up to everybody’s imagination to interpret it any way they want it to. I am Indian, more than anybody else. All I said was ‘The South’, I do not know why people have to get very excited about it.”
PM Joins BJP Pushback
Top BJP leaders slammed Mr Chakravarty, chairman of Professionals’ Congress and the party’s data analytics department, for his ‘north vs south’ post. BL Santhosh, BJP’s national general secretary, said, “They always keep two cards ready. Now they have taken out second card.” Kerala BJP president K Surendran said that the Congress had adopted the “separatist narrative” after failing on their regular capsules of “Hindu party, caste politics, EVMs and freebies”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the debate with a post on X that took the Internet by storm, thanks to emojis used. Commenting on a journalist’s tough take on the ‘north vs south’ argument and other arguments being propped up to explain the Congress’s setbacks in the heartland, the Prime Minister wrote, “May they be happy with their arrogance, lies, pessimism and ignorance. But… Beware of their divisive agenda. An old habit of 70 years can’t go away so easily. Also, such is the wisdom of the people that they have to be prepared for many more meltdowns ahead.”
Row Reaches Parliament
The ‘North vs South’ debate was stoked by DMK MP DNV Senthil Kumar’s remark in Lok Sabha yesterday, when he described states in the Hindi heartland as “gaumutra states”. The comments drew strong criticism from the BJP, DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and ally Congress. BJP leaders said Mr Kumar’s remarks amounted to “hate speech” and warned that the voters will “wipe out” Opposition bloc INDIA — of which DMK is a part of — in the general elections next year. Union Minister Anurag Thakur slammed the INDIA bloc over the remarks, accusing them of insulting “Hindu, Hindi and Sanatan Dharma” and backing divisive ideas.
Drawing fire, the DMK MP has apologised. “Commenting on the results of the five recent state assembly elections, I have used a word in a inappropriate way. Not using that term with any intent, I apologise for sending the wrong meaning across,” he said in a post on X. The DMK said Mr Stalin pulled up Mr Kumar for his remarks and said the party had always insisted on the need for a dignified approach while making public remarks.
