ROZGAR MELA AND UNEMPLOYMENT IN INDIA

The unemployment rate is the proportion of individuals without jobs within the labor force. 

The labor force encompasses those who provide or express willingness to provide labor for economic activities, covering both employed and unemployed individuals. 

As per the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PFLS) 2017-18, India’s labor force exhibited a 6.1% unemployment rate, with 17.8% of youth aged 15-29 facing unemployment.

Reasons of Unemployment

Jobless Growth: A country’s GDP can increase without significant job creation or even with job losses. While GDP growth is necessary for job creation, it’s not enough.

Slow Manufacturing sector growth: India’s growth relies on the service sector, which is less labor-intensive than manufacturing. The manufacturing phase has provided limited well-paid jobs, especially for those with lower education and skills.

Skill Mismatch: There’s often a mismatch between the skills possessed by job seekers and the skills demanded by available job opportunities. This discrepancy results in unemployment even when there are vacancies.

Informal Sector Dominance: A significant portion of India’s economy operates in the informal sector, which often lacks stable jobs and social security benefits, leading to underemployment and insecurity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Distributes Appointment Letters to 71,000 New Employees

At the Rozgar Mela today, new recruits were given roughly 71,000 appointment letters by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister talked to the recently inducted recruits at 10:30 am using video conferencing. The Karmayogi Prarambh is an online orientation course designed for the newly selected recruits to enhance their training and skill development in different government divisions. During his speech, the Prime Minister commended the new recruitment policies for eradicating corruption and favoritism. He extended his congratulations to the newly appointed recruits and reaffirmed the administration's dedication to empowering the younger generation. The Prime Minister expressed how the Rozgar Mela itself is evidence of the government's determination and dedication to accomplishing this objective. Rs. 34 trillion has been invested in capital expenditure and basic facilities to boost employment, as stated by PM Modi. To create similar opportunities this year, the budget has been allocated at Rs. 10 trillion.  Modi also drew attention to the electrification of 40,000km of rail lines and highlighted the rapid expansion of the metro rail network, as well as the efficient road networking that has improved connectivity between rural regions.  The PM concluded his remarks by encouraging new recruits to seize opportunities and contribute to the nation's growth.  The Rozgar Mela is an event held across 45 locations where job seekers and employers can connect, offering employment opportunities within Central Government Departments and State Governments/UTs that support the initiative. The PM addressed new recruits at an event, who were chosen nationwide for positions like Gramin Dak Sevaks, Principal, Trained Graduate Teacher, Inspector of Posts, Commercial-cum-Ticket Clerk, and more. The government's Rozgar Mela prioritizes employment creation to empower young people and boost national development through opportunities for national participation. Through the Rozgar Mela, the government's primary objective is to give priority to the creation and generation of jobs. The ultimate aim of the Mela is to strengthen and enable the younger generation of the nation, and therefore enhance the nation's progress by providing them with opportunities and facilitating wider participation in national development. Regular workshops are held by the government at the college and university levels in and around the districts of Rozgar Mela to motivate young people and promote their participation. The Kaushal Mela was also organized alongside the event, enabling youth to enroll for training programs. Additionally, counseling sessions were available for job seekers. Read the full article
