BAE Systems tests on the F-35 its next generation of vehicle management computer
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/08/2023 - 16:00 in Military
BAE Systems' next-generation vehicle management computer has been successfully tested in flight on the F-35 Lightning II aircraft.
The test demonstrated a technological update for all three variants of the F-35 that will increase computer performance and solve obsolescence problems. The tests took place at Patuxent Naval Air Station and Edwards Air Base.
BAE Systems' Vehicle Management Computer (VMC) allows advanced control modes and improves mission efficiency and safety. Its distributed architecture allows the aircraft to operate reliably with greater mission effectiveness in demanding environments. The updated VMC will not only help mitigate obsolescence, but will also improve the safety, maintainability and availability of the aircraft for the U.S. military and its allies.
Tumblr media
"The VMC provides the high integrity processing necessary to implement the advanced control algorithms that allow the critical missions of this platform," said Corin Beck, director of Military Aircraft Systems for Aircraft Controls and Solutions at BAE Systems. "This update took advantage of BAE Systems' technological roadmap to ensure that the F-35 advances its mission management and flight control capabilities today and in the future."
This technological update incorporates an advanced quad-core processor for an efficient and high-performance solution. The new level of computing power allows additional capabilities of the aircraft, while reducing the pilot's workload. It also adds advanced mission features to the VMC, such as the Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) and the Automatic Ground Collision Prevention System (AGCAS).
BAE Systems has more than 40 years of experience in the development and integration of flight control technology for military and commercial platforms. Work at VMC takes place at the company's state-of-the-art engineering and manufacturing facilities in Endicott, New York.
BAE Systems is an important global partner of Lockheed Martin in the F-35 program. The company supplies the VMC, electronic warfare system, active inceptor control system and rear fuselage for each F-35 in manufacturing facilities in the US, UK and Australia. The company also offers sustainability services, technical support and training to keep the F-35s ready for the mission.

According to a recent study report published by the Market Research Future, the use of UAVs is already influencing many companies and industries to look forward to their design, development, and manufacturing processes. The possible applications of UAVs are numerous, such as passenger carriage, cargo transportation, agricultural, and industrial. Currently, there are a number of investments by companies, such as Airbus, Boeing, AeroVironment, Inc., and DJI, which would significantly propel the market growth.
The UAVs are also used in numerous industrial applications, such as detection of leaks, corrosion, and other problems related to oil and gas rigs & pipelines. They are also used in transmission lines for vegetation management to monitor trees and prevent them from interfering with transmission lines. These UAVs prove economic feasibility for discrete site assessment, reliable and cost-effective inspection, and thus, increase the demand for UAVs in the global market.
The US is at the forefront of developing UAVs and has dominance in the overall market. In recent years, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) is focusing on the approval of the UAVs for commercial applications. The country houses companies such as AeroVironment Inc., Boeing, and Uber Technologies Inc., which are very active in the UAV market. Similarly, Europe is a key market in the global unmanned aerial vehicle market. The presence of more than eight manufacturers, including firms such as Airbus S.A.S, Lilium, and Volocopter GmbH is expected to boost the market in Europe, in the next two decades. The key drivers for the market in this region are the increasing joint ventures and partnerships and rapid technological advancements. Despite the UAV industry having both technical and economic importance, some significant barriers prevent its expansion. Industry/ Innovation/ Related News:

F-35 fighters in Poland can transmit data to the MiG-29 operating in Ukraine
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/06/2013 - 18:19 in Military, Zones of War
An exercise carried out recently in Europe provided an unexpectedly good combination to help the Ukrainian Air Force.
This is a joint data transfer effort between the American fifth-generation stealth fighter F-35 Lightning II and the fourth-generation Soviet MiG-29 fighter. Realistically, the F-35 could become an important air platform in Eastern Europe and in the war in Ukraine.
A few days ago, there was a NATO exercise on Poland. The MiG-29 of the Polish Air Force and the F-35 of the Royal Dutch Air Force flew in joint pairs during this exercise. Interestingly, this exercise had another purpose: training to exercise Air Policing, a common air action in times of war and in times of peace. F-16 and Rafale fighters also participated.
However, the exercise showed an unexpectedly good relationship between one of the pairs of F-35 and MiG-29 taking off from Malbork Air Base in Poland. The two fighters exchanged data and intercepted a hypothetical enemy target. In addition to the interception of conditional targets, the two fighters coordinated actions to ensure the flights of two Polish freighters who also participated in the exercise.
Tumblr media
Many experts already say that combining a fourth-generation Soviet fighter with a fifth-generation Western fighter is quite intriguing. This is important because it can become an unsuspected opportunity for NATO, the allies and the Ukrainian Air Force.
The exercise demonstrated the possibility of the F-35 transmitting data to the MiG-29, guiding it.
Most likely, it is about detecting enemy targets that outdated Soviet radars cannot detect today, but the F-35 can. Just as drones direct artillery fire, the F-35 can help the MiG-29 in firing, even if the target does not appear on the Soviet fighter's radar.
The F-35 can use the MiG-29 flying to the position behind it, and the MiG-29 being actually the weapons system. In simpler terms: an F-35 stationed in Poland can transmit aiming data to MiG 29 fighters operating in Ukraine.
Tumblr media
Thus, the F-35 will not violate Ukrainian airspace and, at the same time, even if it is detected by radar by a Soviet fighter, it remains in NATO's safe air zone, becoming a visible sensor in a restricted area.
It turns out that, as far away as technological, the two fighters are as close as working on a joint operation. None of these tests had been done so far, but the war in Ukraine involved many NATO military strategists in the search for solutions to the problems that now arise in times of war.
It is worth mentioning that, despite the joint training, the two fighters are fundamentally different. First of all, its functionality is different. The MiG-29 was designed for air superiority, while the F-35 is a multifunctional poacher.
The technology is so different that, according to some experts, even the most experienced MiG-29 pilot would have difficulty flying the F-35 without undergoing a long and serious training.
Tumblr media
Eight F-35 fighters of the Royal Dutch Air Force (RNLAF) are currently deployed in Poland. They are part of the NATO operation in the region for deterrent actions in case of a possible escalation of the war in Ukraine. These planes do not remain on the ground, but carry out various daily trainings or missions along the border with Ukraine almost weekly.
The F-35's Dutch air operations are controlled by the Poland Air Operations Center in Warsaw and the NATO Combined Air Operations Center in Wedem. According to several sources, some of the Dutch F-35 were on an escort mission for Russian planes flying near NATO areas over the Baltic Sea.
