Spectrum auction indicates operators gearing up for 5G transition
The outcome of the spectrum auction indicates that Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are gearing up to offer 5G services. While most of the acquisitions have been to renew spectrum in circles where they are expiring, both operators have consolidated their holding in the sub-GHz frequency bands, which is ideal for 5G services. Reliance Jio has acquired 133 Mhz of fresh spectrum in the 800 Mhz band.…

Jio has a 'Sign in with Apple' like service but for Reliance employees only
Tumblr media
Reliance Jio is working on a new digital authentication and authorisation service, which would allow smartphone users to sign-in on apps and websites through a single pin. Named Jio SecureID, the service is currently available in beta testing to select Reliance group employees. The Jio SecureID is expected to be part of Jio Platforms services, which are available for everyone to use and explore.
The Jio SecureID seems similar to ‘Google Sign-in’ and ‘Sign in with Apple’ services. However, it works through a dedicated app (Jio SecureID), which will be available on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store to download. The app allows users to create four-digit and six-digit pins, which can be used to sign-in on apps and portals. To generate pins, however, you need a valid mobile number and the authentication is done through Aadhaar.

Tumblr media
Reliance Communications said it has completed sale of its fibre assets and related infrastructure assets, worth Rs 30 billion, to Mukesh Ambani-backed Reliance JioInfocomm (RJIO).
“With successful completion of the fibre monetisation transaction, 1,78,000 kilometers fibre stand transferred to RJIO,” Reliance Communications said in a BSE filing.
Last week, Reliance Communications had completed the planned sale of its media convergence nodes (MCNs) and related infrastructure assets, worth Rs 20 billion, Reliance Jio Infocomm.
Earlier this month, Reliance Communications had reinstated bank guarantees worth Rs 7.74 billion with the telecom department ahead of the timeline set by the telecom tribunal, and had said that its Rs 250 billion asset sale plans were “on track”.
Last year, Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications signed a pact with Reliance Jio for sale of wireless spectrum, tower, fibre and MCN assets – the proceeds of which were to be used to reduce debt.
The deal announced in December 2017, packed in 122.4 MHz of 4G spectrum in the 800/900/1800/2100 MHz bands, over 43,000 towers, 1,78,000 kilometres of fibre and 248 media convergence nodes. The nodes’ sale concluded today represents the initial tranche of the planned, larger deal.
