Finding the Farah Dowling Dress
So if you're like me, and you fall in love with a show and a character and their vibe, then you Google their clothing and stare longingly at the designer brands the costume designers chose for a character meant to be work a normal 9-5, and then return to your normal life and/or maybe find a similar piece of clothing for an affordable price.
Well.
Every time I Google "Farah Dowling outfits/clothing," one of the only articles of clothing I can find is her absolutely gorgeous pale blue leather coat -you know the one (retails for $1000-$2000 depending where you look). Which is all well and good, but I want MORE. I want her ENTIRE WARDROBE. But no matter how hard I looked, I couldn't find anything, so on my sixth ahem third rewatch of the series, I zeroed in on my favorite Farah Dowling dress and I. Was. Determined. I was GOING to find this dress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To begin, this is the dress. It's gorgeous, the fit is fab, it has pockets, need I go on? The first step on my quest to find this dress was typing in every possible descriptor I could think of into Google. At first I thought it was grey, but upon closer inspection (the hug) I realized it was in fact an olive green. So, olive, high-neck, knee-length, third-quarter-length-sleeves, pockets, pencil skirt, wrap dress (it's not, technically, but "tie waist" was not working) -I'm probably forgetting some. And lo and behold, I stumble across:
Tumblr media
Available in two colors, this dress, called the Caroline, is from designer Helen McAlinden, and the more I look at it, the more I'm convinced it very well might be it. So I Google the dress in olive green:
Tumblr media
"This is it," I think, "that's the dress." Has to be. Or else it's very, very similar.
But no.
It's the dress. THE dress.
How do I know?
Because Helen McAlinden is an Irish designer, with a shop in Dublin City Centre across from the George's Street Arcade. Fate is filmed in Ireland, specifically at Killruddery House (Alfea) and Powerscourt (stone circle/waterfall) in Bray and Glendalough, Co. Wicklow (forest/outdoor scenes).
So why wouldn't the costume designers of Fate: The Winx Saga purchase a dress by an Irish designer while filming in Ireland?
Is there a chance I'm wrong? Maybe, but I'm 99.9% sure I'm right. That's the Farah Dowling dress.
The olive dress, found here, is out of stock, and no longer available on the Helen McAlinden website.
But it is still available in the white and dove grey.
*All sizes are UK sizes.

Today is our final full day in Ireland. We had two nights at our last B&B with Jim and Carol - what wonderful hosts. We would stay at their place in Union Hall again. We woke up to heavy rain, and except for an hour in the afternoon it was simply rain. Today is our longest drive, over 400 kilometers, but we are not afraid, we can count on our little Ford Puma to take us there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, we got in the car and headed north - for hours - our destination was Powerscourt Estate, Park and Garden. Sarah loves this place and didn’t want me to miss it. At times we could hardly see the road as the rain was so fierce. I just slowed down and kept on going all morning long. It was worth the drive.
Tumblr media
The first thing I needed after the long drive was a bathroom. As I entered the stall, the sign above was on the door. I think I get it - but come on, really?! Do we need this sign? Ok, focus Rob!

As you can see from the pictures, Powerscourt is a feast for the eyes. Even in October when the gardens are near their end - this place was beautiful - in the rain. It is named the 3rd best garden in the world. We need to come back in the summer! And then there are the 47 acres of park, forest, rare plants, hundreds of statues, and good coffee in the restaurant!
Sarah took a shine to one of the lions, and they had a good chat. The stunning Powerscourt House is listed as one of the top 10 prominent homes globally. To see it in the rain for a few hours was a pure delight. Now to our B&B for our final night in Ireland.

Powerscourt Gardens, Co. Wicklow
In 1974, Powerscourt House, one of Ireland’s stateliest homes, was devastated by fire. At the risk of sounding undiplomatic, the loss was more the Irish nation’s than the modern traveler’s Powerscourt House had never been open to the public. The appeal here was, and always has been, the huge garden, which remains one of the most glorious in Europe.
Like Bodnant in Wales, the grounds of Powerscourt enjoy every natural advantage: a hillside setting, natural lake, and a sweeping view across an undulating green landscape to the hazy blue Wicklow hills and Sugar Loaf Mountain. With so much to work with, the man who designed it all need not have exerted himself much - and in fact he didn’t. Named Daniel Robertson, he was a chronic sufferer of gout, brought on by an even more chronic affection for alcohol, and he spent his days sprawled in a wheelbarrow, a bottle of port on his lap, laconically supervising the work as an apprentice wheeled him around the site. Another apprentice was posted to keep a lookout for debt collectors, whose appearance would produce in Robertson an uncharacteristic agility and send him scampering off to hide in one of the cellars or outbuildings. Once even he had to be helped down from the roof.
Despite these distractions and drawbacks, Robertson evidently retained a spark of genius because the gardens at Powerscourt are one of the most assured and masterly creations of the nineteenth century. Laid out in a series of vast formal terraces, up to 800 feet wide, they lead down to the little lake-once called Juggy’s Pond, but hastily rechristened the Triton Pool. Overlooking it is the focal point of the garden, the perron - an elevated viewing platform enclosed with a delicate wrought-iron balustrade and paved in bold geometrical patterns with white and gray pebbles from a nearby beach. Here and throughout the garden, carefully scattered among the trees and formal flowerbeds, is a wealth of fountains and statuary, sundials and giant urns, some of them up to eight feet high. The whole effect suggests the elegant formality of a French garden, but wonderfully softened by the gentle, unsubdued countryside at its feet. This is, in short, one of the great gardens of the world - and the last in Europe to be built in the grand style.
Details: Powerscourt is just outside the very pretty village of Enniskerry, about 12 miles south of Dublin and connected by bus services. The estate - which covers 14,000 acres and contains a 400-foot-high waterfall, the highest in the British Isles - and garden are open every day from 10 am to 5:30pm between Easter and October 31.
