The student lounge was crowded and with one lone table available, Lapis strode forward with purpose. Yet, there was someone else who was clearly looking at the same seats, and as she walked faster the other woman also matched her gait.

Until both arrived at the table at the same time, placing her sketchbook down, Lapis slid her chair backwards and took a seat at the same time her temporary rival sat down with her computer.

“Hey. I’m Lapis. Didn’t mean to try to muscle you out.” Extending her hand forward, she offered her a smile. “Seen you around the school a bit, but I don’t think we’ve officially met.”

Nico narrows her brow gives a bit of a side-eyed pout at her older friend before spinning on her heels to face her once more.

“Well if you want something more tangible, why don’t you take one of my assignments off my hands?”

When the tongue-in-cheek remark was met with silence and a withering stare, Nico cleared her throat and began fumbling through her bags and pockets. It was worth a shot.

Mumbling all the while, she gathered all of her findings to her two presenting hands. Laying there was;

A scrunched up receipt about a week old

Generic pocket fluff

A shiny dollar coin minted this year kept for safekeeping

A blue pen without a cap

A random screw she’d found on the ground

A candy wrapper

With a judging stare at her hands, Nico had an inkling that the options presented may not be enough and pulled one of the red ribbons from her hair and added it to the treasure hoard.

“Here. If there’s anything here you want, take your pick.”

Lapis scoffed. With crossed arms, she fixed a glare towards the shorter girl. “Nico. You’ve seen how many assignments I’ve had to grade. If you give me your overdue homework, I’m going to feed it to a paper shredder.” 

Only half-joking, Lapis watched her club president eventually offer up another assortment of items to satisfy her debt. With still nothing that could even come close, her expression eventually softened as the girl untied her ribbon.

“Fine. I’ll accept it.” Grabbing the ribbon from Nico, she wrapped it around her wrist in a sloppy bow. “Do you want me to help you out? I can get your pigtail evened out into a ponytail.”

She had never thought herself to be one to rely on social media so much for interaction. That was for nerds. For shut-ins. All the stereotypes and stigmas she was convinced she didn’t embody at all. Yet, she’s happy enough to board the elevator behind her neighbor, ignoring their plight for now. She didn’t ask for help after all and seemed to board just fine.

Pressing the up button, she turns her attention back to her phone. A new notification had popped up.

[Helianthus]: sounds like they're trying to kill you or at least just make you do all their work while they go to "meetings" again still, that's rough. can't pass it on to some of the other TAs?

“Other TA’s. Yeah right.” Her suppressed giggle came out as a snort as Lapis read her friend’s response.

[MeepMorp]:Yeah right. Like they'd help me. They're already trying to save themselves from prof and honestly these freshmen? some of them took econ 101 and decided they're hot shit here let me take a picture for you. you'll laughn

And with that she pulled a special paper from on top of the pile and with barely concealed glee snapped a picture. “And upload.”

You’re the greatest!  I hope you know just how much I appreciate you!”  The flowers could nearly be seen around Nico’s head, eyes following the credit card with great anticipation. “I get my paycheck Thursday! …I think! I’ll definitely pay you back then! I’ll set a note and save it as my screensaver!*”

After her pre-planned response and subsequent ordering of the food(not that what she said was a lie, she did appreciate the girl’s presence in her life), Nico processed her companion’s last remark. The anime club had grown quite a bit over the past week. Last time she looked at the member list she spat her soda out and they had to print out another one. It’s all well and good, having like-minded individuals(/flunkies) was good, Nico just forgot that she was technically in charge of all of them… a fact that felt heavy on her shoulders.

“Prez needs her carbs – it isn’t going to be easy being held responsible for all our friends in the club.” She boasts with a hint of a sigh. “Don’t worry, if I don’t end up paying monetarily – which I will, for sure this time – I vow to pay you back with good times and the power of friendship! You have my oath!”

Nico: the only person who would call her such a strange nickname, and had eventually exhausted her into accepting. A sigh leaves her lips. Already she was exhausted by the energy radiating out of the shorter girl.

“You’re too happy.” Squinting her eyes as if the elation coming off of Nico was literally blinding her, she slid away to the side as she let others put in their order. “And my dear Miss President, you’re valuing your friendship a little too highly. 

“Maybe you should reconsider, you’re going to put yourself into more debt and one day someone less scrupulous than I will come collecting.” Honestly. Good times? Lapis was rather apprehensive as to what exactly that entailed. Maybe if she hadn’t ended up paying for their last outing together, she could look forward to what her friend had planned

         ❛ uhh, i still don’t get it…? ❜ a brow raised, arms fold firmly as she shifts her weight. while she was no means uninterested, she simply wasn’t following the other’s manner or speech. or was it her jargon. it was probably the jargon. and it was neon who asked about dungeons and disasters in the first place, but she didn’t expect it to be so… complicated. geeky board games were still a new thing for her and a couple of her friends played it so… she wanted to know more.

         confusion apparent in her features, it quickly takes hold of her weird hand gesturing. 

         ❛ okay okay, tell me one more time. what happens when you roll a twenty again? can your character just like… do whatever? ❜

Why was she still here. Just to suffer? 

As a long suffering member of the Dungeons and Disasters club, Lapis had managed to avoid the meeting where the club tries to gather new members for years now, only to be forced to sub in for a friend.

At least her table seemed to attract the least amount of people. Perhaps it was her standoffish demeanor, her glare was quite the deterrent.

Or maybe it was this strange girl who was talking a mile a minute.

“You... Well sort of. On attack rolls if you roll a twenty your attack automatically hits and will crit. For other skill checks, it’s really up to the Dungeon Master.”

“Say, uh… Ya don’t think you could do a favor for your favorite club prez, could you…?”

Nico motioned with her hands the most precious commodity of all – money. 

Classes had finished for the day, and an uneventful sojourn in the club room moved into what all lazy hangouts do; a food run. Usually a quick trip to the convenience store to get some cup noodles and chips would solve it, but Nico insisted the two go somewhere different for a change of pace. Somewhere off campus.

And here they stand, right at the front counter of Flour Girl Pizza. The two stood in line for longer than they should, and when the time for their orders finally came Nico’s wallet was feeling preeetty light. Like, a speck of dust light. But… that maple & bacon pizza was calling her name.

“I-I’ll pay you back, I swear it! Club-mate's honor! I’ll even rearrange the DVDs on the shelf back into alphabetical order!”

“Hey Nico, I know you mean well, but I can’t just keep buying you dinner. I’m not made of money you know?”

With arms crossed she stared back as the shorter girl gave more and more reasons and excuses as to why she should pay. Though her intent was to emulate the look her mother used to give her, she managed to convey more exasperation than true disappointment which unfortunately had little effect on her, and as she continued on, eventually the two ended up before the checkout. Trapped and not wanting to hold up the queue, it was with a sigh that the girl acquiesced.

“Fine. Just... Order your pizza.”

“You better reimburse somehow, or I’m taking this out of the club budget.”  Pulling out her wallet, and with her credit card at the ready, she turned back towards the cashier with a tired smile.

“Pumpkin. Not here.” As she tried to pull her dog by the leash, the hypepractive animal forced itself against her, as he excitedly ran the other way. “Pumpkin. Come onnn.”  

Eventually after fruitless attempts to guide her pet the way she intended, she gave up and allowed herself to be led off. Chasing after her as she allowed herself to be dragged in a half-hearted jog, she eventually stopped in front of a not unfamiliar figure.

“Um... Sorry about her, she gets excited meeting new people. Are you in my Contemporary Arts class?”

“Hey dude. Um... Sorry that you heard all that shit.” With one hand on her neck, she kind of scratched at it uncomfortably. At least he didn’t end up hearing the entirety of her self-deprecation, but still forcing himself into her life was a little odd.

“I didn’t mean to have anyone hear, but um... I guess thank you for sitting with me.” Even if he had been a bit too acerbic. 

“I don’t think I ever gave you my name, I’m Lapis.”

“I still remember it.”

“So I used to mod this small forum fangroup and well one thing led to another and we ‘accidentally’ leaked a fake script for a future episode.” 

“And then um… We got a lot of angry people and the forum ended up having to close down.”
