Es: [footsteps]
Shido: Hm?
Es: Sorry to have kept you waiting. [footsteps] Prisoner number 5, Shido.
Shido: No need to. Thank you for all your hard work, Es.
Es: Now then, Shido. Let’s begin the interrogation.
Shido: Very well. Please go ahead.
Es: [hesitates] Ok. Let’s see... Milgram exists to reveal the sins of you, prisoners, and to hand down the appropriate judgement. So, for that reason, talk to me for a bit.
Shido: Understood. Please take good care of me from now on.
Es: [pauses] Even if this is referred to as an interrogation, at this moment in time, I don’t plan on using violence. In addition to that, any falsehood or silence from you will be acknowledged.
Shido: I see. I might refrain from voicing anything I don’t want to say, but I have no intention of lying to you.
Es: Shido, how’s life in Milgram? Do you have any complaints about its environment? Or have any issues arisen from the other prisoners, etc?
Shido: No particular inadequacies really come to mind. And, my fellow prisoners haven't particularly caused any issues either. Es, I wonder if this is the fruit of all the governing you do? It’s remarkable.
Es: Not really. [hesitates] Hold on a second, Shido.
Shido: Yes? What is it?
Es: This is… I know it’s me who’s getting things mixed up here, but…  In comparison to all the interrogations thus far, this one has been progressing far too smoothly; it feels somewhat unsettling.
Shido: I’m not sure what to say to that...
Es: Hm. [footsteps] Shido, do you seriously not have any reservations about Milgram?
Shido: Well, let’s see. I mean, without a doubt, it’s clearly a strange place. Its architectural style and the written script it uses are things I’ve never seen before either. If you were to say I was having a dream or a vision, then that would make more sense to me.
Es: Hm.
Shido: But, all things considered, I’m still very much conscious. My pulse rate is within its normal range. And, I can’t find any symptoms to suggest that I’m hallucinating either. So, I don't exactly find that idea to be very convincing.
Es: Oh?
Shido: Other than that... If this is the afterlife, then this place must be hell. But, if I set that idea aside, then… This is just real life. I, myself, am in normal condition; it’s where I am which is unusual. I may not know the reason behind this place or how it works, but even if I tried to escape from the reality of it, nothing would really change, right?
Es: You sure are composed, aren’t you?
Shido: That’s just my personality. I just simply don’t think bad of it—this place, I mean.
Es: You mean, Milgram?
Shido: Yeah, this place will put me to death.
Es: What?
Shido: I might not get a golden opportunity like this again, so I’ll get straight to the point. Es… You decide how the prisoners will be dealt with, right?
Es: Yeah. That’s right.
Shido: The death penalty is what I’m hoping for. Thank you in advance.
Es: I won’t have that. The lot of you can’t decide what your own treatment will be. Only I as the prison guard have the authority to do so.
Shido: Exactly. You as the prison guard have the right to do such a thing, Es, so that’s why I’m asking you for this favour.
Es: [scratches head, sighs] In regards to your sin, what I’ve gathered so far is that you both regret and have already reflected on your actions. On top of that, you’re also seeking to receive the maximum penalty we have to offer. So, let’s use that information. The idea that I’ll be taking your behaviour into consideration is nothing more than a mere presumption.
Shido: [hesitates]
Es: And, of course, I haven’t thrown away the possibility that you’re only doing this to get on my good side either.
Shido: Hm. I honestly have no idea what you and Milgram are setting out to achieve. You mentioned something about extracting songs and videos from our hearts, and then using them to judge our sins, didn’t you?
Es: Yeah. And, what of it?
Shido: There’s no need for you to go through such a cumbersome process. If you want to hand down the correct punishment for me, then all you have to do is put an end to my life and it'll be over in a blink of an eye.
Es: You’re being annoyingly persistent, Shido! Know your place here.
Shido: Please listen to me, Es. I’ve killed people. Lots of them as well. It was for such a selfish reason too. I’m a fine specimen of what a genuine murderer ought to be. [footsteps] There’s no reason for you to forgive me. And, I don’t have the desire to be forgiven either.
Es: I really don’t...get you.
Shido: If you don’t put me to death, then neither the people I’ve killed nor their families will be at peace. Don’t you think so too?
Es: As if that’s my business. I haven’t necessarily sided with your victims and I’m not a family member of theirs either.
Shido: [sighs]
Es: [sighs] Anyway, the only thing I’ll be deciding on is whether or not I forgive you. I don’t even know the details of what punishment will follow after that.
Shido: Is that so? Es, I suppose you were left in the dark about many things as well just like the rest of us.
Es: Knowing what happens to the lot of you afterwards might prevent me from making a straightforward decision about whether I should forgive you or not. So, it’s to avoid that from happening. Were you aware of that?
Shido: Hm… But, this place does smell of the dead though. I’m sure that some sort of death will lie at the end of Milgram.
Es: Smell of the dead?
Shido: Yes. I can somewhat recognise it from experience… A place which is filled with the smell of the dead, that is.
Es: Is...that so? Well, either way, Milgram is a three-trial system. It lets me take my time to decide on whether or not I should forgive you. Even if you wish for the opposite, if I decide that you should be forgiven, then it’ll do just that without any hesitation.
Shido: A three-trial system, right? It’ll take far too long, don’t you think? I’d rather this all be over as soon as possible.
Es: Like I care about what’s convenient for you. Don’t complain about the rules.
Shido: So, if it’s a three-trial system… Then, for example, if you absolutely can’t find it within yourself to forgive me and I don’t lodge an appeal in response, will my treatment be decided on the spot?
Es: That’s the three-trial system according to Japanese law. Milgram’s one is different from that. For the time being, you really should throw away what would be considered common sense there. I mean, if we’re gonna bring up Japan… Due to the abolition of the Prison law, this sort of prison shouldn’t even exist in the first place. (1)
Shido: Wow…
Es: What is it? You’re going all wide-eyed.
Shido: Ah, well… I was just thinking about how despite being a child, you’ve really done your research on this.
Es: Hey. [footsteps] You trying to make fun of me, is that it?
Shido: What? Oh, no. I wasn’t trying to do anything like that.
Es: You were. Something’s been on my mind ever since the very beginning… “Es, this. Es, that.” It’s the belittling way you refer to me…  I’m the prison guard, you know that?
Shido: Oh, I’m completely aware of that. But, you’re still a child in actuality. Coming from me, who’s almost twice the age as you are, I just…
Es: What is it?
Shido: For a child like you to be entrusted with this sort of role… My heart goes out to you.
Es: Excuse me?
Shido: I don’t know what circumstances you face while guarding this prison nor the reason as to why you’re doing it, but I’m sure that it must take a toll on you emotionally as well. So, please do your best. [pats head]
Es: [is shook] I see. Oh, I see now. So, that’s how it is. So, that’s how it’s gonna be. [deep breaths]
Shido: Hm? Es?
Es: Don’t you dare… pat my head like that! [kicks]
Shido: [grunts] Please hold on for a second.
Es: Phew, I feel so much better now.
Shido: S-suddenly kicking my shin like that…wasn’t very nice of you.
Es: Shut up! Out of all the prisoners thus far, you’re the one I can’t stand the most. Going all pessimistic like that, running your mouth as if you knew everything, acting as if you’re oh-so mature, and never budging from that composed expression of yours—the nerve of you! On top of that, you even went so far as to pat my head. Do you think I’m your child? Do you?! Don’t fuck with me!
Shido: Didn’t you say that you wouldn’t use violence?
Es: It’s on a case-by-case basis.
Shido: What a thing to say.
Es: Hey, Shido. What the hell do you mean by "I want to die"? Don’t you dare try to insult me with that. Plead for your life with every fibre of your being! Our instinctive desire to stay alive is the very reason why punishments for our sins exist. To Milgram and to me, your very existence is sacrilegious!
Shido: Es…
Es: If your shin gets kicked, you’ll feel pain, won’t you? And if it hurts, you’ll cry out, won’t you? You’ll tear up, won’t you?
Shido: Yeah…
Es: Well, take that! Even if you boast about wanting to die, the pain you just felt is the exact same thing as your body screaming that it doesn’t want to.
Shido: [pauses]
Es: While you’re still alive, you should be grabbing life with both hands! Don’t act as if you’re already dead. An adult like that has no right to treat me like a child. It makes my skin crawl. End of discussion!
Shido: I see… If I feel pain, then it’s proof that I want to live?
Es: Hmph!
Shido: [sighs] Well, with that being said, here’s my counterargument to it. It was the nociceptors in my shin which felt that pain. So, it's nothing more than a reaction caused by pain signals being transmitted to my spinal cord and then to my brain. That phenomenon is called nociceptive pain.
Es: What?
Shido: What I’m saying is… Even if I do want to die, pain is something which will still involuntarily occur. And therefore, you, Es, were making a mistake in your claim.
Es: That's so immature of you.
Shido: [laughs] It’s payback for kicking my shin like that. But, you know, I think it was an amazing mistake to have made. It was so radiant...to the point where it made me want to turn away. Just as I thought, you truly are a child…but that makes me incredibly happy.
Es: Shido… [mechanical noises] It’s time, huh.
Shido: So, this is what will be “extracting songs”? It sure is intriguing. I wonder what mine will be like.
Es: Composed no matter what, aren’t you? Is there anything left you'd like to say?
Shido: Oh, yeah. I don’t know about what the other prisoners may think about Milgram itself, but…  I fully agree with it.
Es: Sure seems that way.
Shido: I’m a fine specimen of what a murderer ought to be. I don’t mind when you hand down your judgement, but if it's possible… Instead of being told by the law that I won’t be forgiven, I wanted a child like you, Es, to tell me that.
Es: What?
Shido: I feel sorry that you had to be given this role. And, I truly apologise for being so insistent about sentencing me to death as well…  But, you’re perfect. You’ll give me the ending I’m most suited for.
Es: [hesitates] Y-you… What’re you saying? A special request like that is so...
Shido: [laughs] Well, I wonder. I'm just trying to get you to punish me as of now.
Es: [hesitates]
Shido: I look forward to you handing down the correct judgment.
Es: You’re making a false presumption there. It’s the fact that it’s my judgment which makes it correct! That’s what Milgram is.
Shido: Then, I look forward to what you deem to be ‘correct’.
Es: Hmph. Say whatever you want.
Shido: Please make sure you don’t forgive me. Okay, Es?
Es: [scoffs] Don’t make me say it over and over again! I don’t give a shit about what you’re hoping for. Prisoner number 5, Shido. Come now. Sing your sins!
「監獄」 [kangoku] were essentially comprised of 「刑務所」 (for those people serving a sentence) and 「拘置所」 (for suspects, those who were awaiting a sentence or those on death row).  They operated under 「監獄法」 (the Prison Law). However, due to abolition of the Prison Law in 2007, those facilities are no longer called 「監獄」, but are now referred to as 「刑事施設」.

Investigation Team as Phantom Thieves AU
Been giving it some serious thought on how it would actually work because a straight swap jkdfasjkl honestly uh lmao
They’re not super rebellious. So I thought.... Maybe more of a blend of the games instead of a straight swap? Like just some stuff I’ve thought of while daydreaming-
obviously some backstories would probably need to be shuffled a bit probably? just bc.... hhhh.... persona reasons-
thinking instead of a resolve to rebel a resolve to see and seek the truth? bc jkfasdljka they’re taking their truthseeker themes WITh them into new AU land bc i don’t see how else this could work
Which made me think in the persona awakening instead of a mask appearing, glasses (like the TV glasses) could appear but uhhh honestly ripping them off doesn’t make sense to me because they’re a lens to pierce through lies and falsehoods (the fog)
AND INSTEAD OF MASK BLOODINESS IT’S JUST THEIR EYES BLEEDING (they’re fine dw if the thieves can be okay after ripping off half their face, the team can be fine after their eyes start bleeding)
Something something about lies being purged from their eyeballs
Probably the resolve to see the truth is tied to either backstory, their canon shadow issues, or both!
like for yu/souji specifically it’d probably be idk him being in denial that his parents kinda suck lmao i have no idea how that would translate to an in-palace awakening-
i’m honestly kind of torn on what to do with adachi, personality-wise it would make the most sense to give him an akechi-like role but at the same time it just seems so..... dry...... to me..... maybe bc akechi was kind of like adachi (at least supposed to be i think) as in he was supposed to not seem to be a threat Until He Was so i’m actually tempted??? to make adachi the first palace the team tackle???
honestly we’re kind of fusing the persona 5 and persona 4 plots together here a little probably-
Also corrupt police detective seems like a good first step for the team to me, kind of similar to Kamoshida bc uh lmao adachi was.... not on the same level as shido.....
Probably more focused on chasing the perp behind the mental shutdowns rather than just getting adults
Is Teddie still a shadow?? Probably ??? I don’t know how this works but I love Teddie too much help
RIP Margaret in this AU. I kind of figure her splits have a calm, mysterious slightly playful twin and then a easily irritated duty-bound one not too too different from Justine and Caroline but y’know more Margaret-y.... Also ngl bc Margaret looks older than Lavenza, Margaret’s twin splits probably also look older-
lmao Yu/Souji’s velvet room is a prison van maybe.... Take the limo and the prison and merge it into one-
IMAGINE just keeping some persona 5 cast for Plot Reasons like Shido and Akechi
Detective Prince vs Detective Prince
Instead of a second coming of the detective prince it’s just the media fighting over who deserves the title more, the latest in the Shirogane detectives or this New Guy Who Has a Very Nice Smile And He’s Pretty and Actually Doing Interviews-
I actually uh don’t entirely know what to do with everyone’s backstories, other than everyone is in Tokyo for Plot Reasons
idk it’s easy enough for yu/souji, he just came back to tokyo
yosuke never left tokyo
naoto and rise are easy enough to place in tokyo too
teddie is just.... from the metaverse so yeah
Not too hard for Chie too ig her parents just moved to the city and she’s probably not jazzed about it
Yukiko and Kanji tho.... Their families are well-established in Inaba hhhhhhh
I MEAN could just have....
...... we could literally steal akira’s backstory and give it to kanji
i can see it kjladkljafjkldsa
yukiko still is an issue hmmm
(if you can’t tell im literally brainstorming more as im writing this-)
Honestly best I got is she followed Chie, and there’s better schooling in Tokyo, and she wants a path that ISN’T the inn
.... oh. actually that kinda works akjdfjklad
.... me thinking about how this is just a lot of pre-Inaba IT huh and the IT being more miserable for reasons
Yosuke probably has ehhh fake friends
Kanji’s delinquent record is going strong except he got fucked over worse than usual
Chie probably isn’t that happy in the city
Yu/Souji is..... Yeah
Rise is probably just getting hit with the hardcore burnout
Naoto just carries the stress with him (i hc he/him naoto)
OKAY BUT THE IDEA OF THEM HAVING TO LEARN TO BE SNEAKY ALL ON THEIR OWN SOUNDS HILARIOUS TO ME
BECAUSE NONE OF THEM ARE ALL THAT NATURALLY GOOD AT THIEVING
AND IT’S FUNNIER TO ME IF TEDDIE UNLIKE MORGANA LIKE CANON P4 ONLY HAS KNOWLEDGE OF THE METAVERSE BUT NO THIEVING SKILLS
so yu/souji and yosuke hit the books on how to be sneaky
Yukiko, Naoto, and Rise are probably the best asides from them to pick up on it
The rest uh lmao less so
but then again ryuji isn’t really that stealthy from the start so im sure it’ll be fine
i haven’t really considered other team swaps but im sure i will somedaaaay
for now i just think the eye bleed persona awakening sounds really cool hhhhhhhh even if it’s roughly as edgy as canon p5 awakenings lmao
They probably just summon their personas with Willpower(tm) in the metaverse, no taking off the glasses necessary bc again it.... doesn’t make sense to take them off.........................
i have no idea what change of heart adachi would look like
ALSO I JUST REALIZED IDK HOW TO SQUEEZE DOJIMA AND NANAKO IN HERE
unless we just move them to tokyo but mmm
ngl i kind of like the idea of sending a less shitty adachi to go hang with them lol
can we waffle between inaba and tokyo
that sounds fun honestly ngl
anyway the team sweating as they actually have to break into a real place in order to resolve a cognitive barrier in a palace
Naoto has to break the law in order to catch a criminal h e l p
forcing the neutral good squad to learn some chaotic gremlin tendencies
they probably would still call themselves the investigation team but them canonically calling themselves the investigation thieves sounds hilarious so maybe lol

Masquerade Kiss: Do Bad Girls Like to Self-pleasure? Kazuomi Shido - otona love - chapter 4 summary/translation
in case you missed it, you can read the previous chapter here or  check out my translations page to read from the start.
Tumblr media
is it just me or have we never seen this background before?
the reason for that is because it’s the day of your day off and you’re setting off in a hot air balloon. you thought you’d be taking the private jet as usual, but it turns out it was diagonally upwards (no idea what she’s actually trying to say here, maybe that you’re going diagonally upwards in a balloon rather than jetting off down a runway and taking off).
kazuomi says that the place you’re going to can only be reached by balloon. a place you can’t go to without a balloon...? you’ve never heard of something like that
Tumblr media
“it’s an island that doesn’t admit transportation other than balloons”
(bro how rich do you have to be to become part of a rich people club where you learn about an island that only allows balloons. next we’re gonna learn that kazu is part of a club where they hunt man for sport)
kazu says that the owner changed and boats and jets aren’t allowed, and then he comments that you look like you want to say “that’s weird”.
Tumblr media
you: “by the way, this balloon... has the “SHIBA company” logo
Tumblr media
“yeah. i borrowed yuzu’s [balloon]”
THE FACT THAT YUZURU CASUALLY HAS A HOT AIR BALLOON... AND NOT JUST HIS OWN ONE BUT IT’S A COMPANY BALLOON ALSDKFJSL. i like how we sometimes think yuzu is so bland and minimalist but then he’s literally just as extra as kazuomi and kei but in his own equally ridiculous way.
kazuomi thinks “balloon huh... you don’t get that many opportunities to ride one*, so when yuzu recommended/offered it, i thought it would be good”
*i’m not sure if he’s saying that you don’t get that many opportunities to ride a balloon or if he himself doesn’t (since there are like no pronouns lmao!!) but i think he’s talking about you since everything he does is for you~ also cause he basically slates balloons in the next slide
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“it’s slow and plain and most of all, the altitude is low”
“it’s good if we’re talking about being romantic, but honestly i prefer something more flashy”
“but mc is surprisingly enjoying the situation”
ughhhh the things he does for you!! 😍😭
you tell him that unlike with airplanes and helicopters, you can actually feel the wind which is so nice, and it’s so great that you can see the scenery without any distance/gap.
“you’ve been busy these days, haven’t you?” you ask. “sometimes it’s not bad to feel the wind like this, right?”
“i see, that’s one way of thinking about it,” kazuomi says.
Tumblr media
you: “if i had to choose one, i’m surprised that shiba-san [is the one] who likes this [kind of thing]”
you say that you think he (shiba) would say that balloons are a waste of time. kazuomi replies that that guy is surprisingly a romantic, which is why he wanted a screw that had gone into outer space.
(wtf yuzu is so adorable.........)
anyway, the balloon goes to its destination with you, who seems to be having fun from start to finish.
Tumblr media
when you land on the small island, you go to a log house purveyed by kei (more like.......perveyed....... sorry couldn’t help myself)
“...it’s so lovely! such a warm atmosphere,” you gush .
kazu says that kei said that it was just that it was spacious... seems like it really is so.
you exclaim that there’s a fireplace in the next room. kazuomi replies that there’s a fireplace here too. nearly all the rooms have one. you say something like that it won’t get cold at night then, and kazu adds that it’s a luxury to spend time listening to the sound of firewood. talking about sound makes kazuomi realise that the log house, with no music, is quiet for now. it’s almost silent because it’s far away from the other log houses.
Tumblr media
“i can’t relax like this ... i wonder if mc is having fun”
you ask him, “hey, aren’t you feeling restless?”
“hm? no...” kazu says. he can’t help but smile wryly as you guess how he’s feeling.
“that kind of face...” you explain
Tumblr media
you: “plus, i was sure you like brilliant and bustling places”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“you understand me well”
you: “it would take a lifetime to understand you completely”
maybe because it’s a quiet place, but your expression is calmer than usual. he likes hearing your small laugh, and he thinks that the quietness isn’t so bad.
“balloons, quiet log houses... none of it is very like you, but that’s why it’s fresh” you say.
Tumblr media
you: “shido, thank you for bringing me [here]”
there was no reason for me to add a screenshot here but i just wanted to show that you really just call him shido.
both the balloon and the log house were loaned from, and proposed by, yuzu and kei.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“on the surface, they were amused with all their might, but i couldn’t help but appreciate the clumsy compassion of my mates*.”
*悪友たち can mean like bad friends/bad company but can also mean like partners in crime, close friends
Tumblr media
“well... there are no interruptions here. what do you want [to do]?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“we came here so i can indulge your every whim** for the whole day”
“anything is fine. i’ll grant any wish”
**literally listen to your selfishness
when the main subject comes up, you shake your head after thinking a little. “i don’t want you to do anything.”
“what did you say...?” kazuomi says.
Tumblr media
you: “i don’t need anything. you bringing me here is enough”
you tell him there was a kitchen back there so you brewed some coffee.
“don’t need anything...?” kazuomi thinks. he stands up, seeing you off to the kitchen after your unexpected response. he can’t infer the true meaning captured in your words.
Tumblr media
after that, the two of you drink the coffee you brewed and enjoy a dinner arranged by kei. he thinks that your profile as you gaze at the firewood in the fireplace looks peaceful and happy and wonders if this is the time you had wished for. he thought you wanted a more enriching time.
you put your cups down on the table at the same time and laugh. your faces naturally approach and your lips touch, and when they part, you laugh again.
“it’s been a while since we spent time like this,”  you say. kazuomi agrees, saying that [you haven’t spent time like this] ever since he first visited your place. “stop joking,” you retort. “i didn’t get a moment of rest that time.” you tell him that you got cold sweats (from anxiety) at the thought of him coming to your place.
“and now?” kazu asks.
“now, well...” you say.
resting your head on his shoulder, he sees your eyes narrow gently as you gaze at the fireplace.
“i’m not troubled by you seeing me, i’m cool [with it]”
Tumblr media
“then, i’ll come visit you again***”
***when kazuomi says またお邪魔しよう he means he’s going to “intrude” in on your place again (since people say “sorry for intruding” when they go to other people’s places)
Tumblr media
you: let me know beforehand. i’ll get my parents to send over some jakoten.
basically they’re referring to that time in kazuomi’s lover obscura route when he came to his mc’s place for the first time and she was really anxious about him seeing her true self and afraid that he wouldn’t be into her bc her true self isn’t as sophisticated as “arisa”. she lied about being able to cook acqua pazza despite not actually being able to cook and instead made yasai itame, nikujaga and tamagoyaki and served miso soup and some side dishes, including jakoten (fried fish cakes) from her hometown (uwajima) that her parents sent, and kazuomi actually really liked jakoten haha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“the sound of mc’s giggly laughter fills my heart and heals me.”
“pointless conversations, playful kisses, intertwined fingers... we haven’t done anything special, but this is enough.”
“it’s a good feeling ... i think it’s because i fell in love with mc”
i just want to interrupt here because this makes me so emotional ahhh. like kazu and his mc’s thing has always been about like challenging and playing games with each other and it’s always been about the thrill of the chase, so i just adore it when they’re just simple and wholesome and in love (esp when kazuomi is the one who we get to see being head over heels).
Tumblr media
“falling in love, huh... i never thought the day would come when i would use that word”
this whole time, he thought it was his role to uncover**** your heart and body. however, without him even realising, you may have opened him up.
****the word used here is more like to unravel/loosen/relax. basically it’s referring to you know how kazuomi and his mc are always talking about like getting each other to open up/expose/reveal their true selves and intentions.
“i see,” kazuomi thinks. “we open up to each other and heal each other.” maybe that’s why you want to spend such an enriching time together.
the coffee that you brewed is still hot and kazuomi feels like he’s never had such delicious coffee before.
Tumblr media
“doing nothing but sipping coffee in front of the fireplace ... that time is the most precious.”
“it’s delicious.” you say the same thing [as he was thinking] after drinking your coffee, face softening.
Tumblr media
“it was already pitch black outside, but the inside of the log house was full of warmth and happiness.”
Tumblr media
“...i see. so this is happiness”
(LOOK HOW SOFT HE IS AHHHHHH)
he places the cup down and hugs you from behind. placing a hand on his arm, you murmur while staring at the fireplace, telling him that he seems to be so busy lately, you didn’t want to push him too much... you avoided tiring him out as much as possible.
for the first time, kazuomi is unmistakably hearing the “true feelings”***** that you have hidden until now...
*****i chose to use this phrasing (alongside true intentions/face) here and in the previous chapter to try to convey the meaning as smoothly as possible through the context but you’d probably get a better sense of the meaning if you search “本音” or “honne”. essentially, it’s one’s true inner self/feelings that can’t necessarily be (and in fact is usually contrary to) one’s outward-facing societal/public persona (tatamae). it’s a recurring theme throughout kazuomi and his mc’s relationship (particularly in the earlier stages) as they are both trying to uncover each other’s real selves.
--
anyway i hope you enjoyed chapter 4! can’t believe we only have 2 chapters left to go, and i promise you that they get really steamy. but for now, i so enjoyed seeing kazuomi putting aside his own tastes to make you happy, and then realising that he’s so in love with you that even doing the simplest things with you give him bliss. it’s so rare that we get to see kazu being... not Excessive(tm)? he’s really just a man in love when it comes to you ;~~; also how cute is it that yuzu and kei give him so much shit but really try to help in any way they can when it comes down to it?
i’ve set up a ko-fi page here and would be incredibly grateful if you would like to support me for translations and being able to purchase more routes to recap in english!

New to the Family
Ok sooo uhhh I don’t know how this happened, but I wrote a fanfic?? It’s based on the Decent Lawbros AU that got made over on my friend @ren-amamiyaa’s blog so credits to them and their followers for the AU, I really love this AU and had been thinking about it a lot lately and I guess I got inspired cuz this happened and I’m still trying to process the fact that I finished it?? I’ve tried to make fanfics before (*side eyes the unfinished Pegoryu fic that has been sitting in my laptop since 2018*) but it’s never gone anywhere, well uhhh enjoy my first ever (finished) fanfic, I guess? I really hope it doesn’t suck and if it does, I’m sorry I don’t know what I’m doing ;__;
It’s summer, the sun was beating down hard, bugs were buzzing, children were playing, Akechi watched all this through the car window as he was being driven to his new home in the country town of Inaba which was quite far from Tokyo, he was still wondering if that was a good thing or not, he didn’t miss Tokyo, but he did miss his friends, they promised they’d visit but he still had a hard time believing that, he knows he should have more faith in them but...
The car came to a sudden stop which snapped Akechi back into reality “All right we’re here.” said his new guardian as he unbuckled his seat belt and opened the drivers door and once out walked to the other side of the car to open Akechi’s.
His new guardian, Ryotaro Dojima, was a detective just like Akechi, well it was still up in the air if he would still pursue that career path or not but he’d rather not dwell on it. “Well, you coming?” said Dojima with a chuckle while holding the car door open for him, “Ah! Y-Yes sir!!” that made Dojima laugh more “No need to be so formal, we are family after all.”
“Right....family...” He was still having trouble processing the fact he had family that wasn’t dead or that man, it was unfamiliar and he didn’t know how to handle it, it seemed way too good to be true.
The Dojima Residence was far from the biggest house he’d ever seen, it looked old and empty, around the house there was a small garden in a lot to the side which seemed to be growing some vegetables and a Scooter parked out front, “Our place isn’t much but I you like it here.” said Dojima in a calm and welcoming tone as got out the key to the front door, “It should just be Nanako who’s home right now, I still have to pick up your brother from Junes.” he placed the key in the lock and twisted it, “I see...” his brother, Yu Narukami, or more accurately his half brother, they didn’t share the same mother but unfortunately shared the same father.
Akechi met Narukami in Tokyo when he moved there and ended up working for their bastard father Masayoshi Shido, Shido was fully aware that Narukami was his son and vice versa and seemed to treat him well which was something Akechi envied, although Akechi was on Shido’s good side at the time so he couldn’t let his envy show in fear of pissing Shido off and ruining everything he worked for those passed few years.
Narukami did simple things for Shido such as run errands for him or, if deemed necessary, asked his opinion on certain issues only to end up half listening to Narukami’s advice if at all, he couldn’t tell if that annoyed Narukami or not, he either didn’t care that Shido ignored his advice or was really good at hiding how he felt, later Akechi would learn that it was most likely the latter. Akechi however was stuck with Shido’s dirty work which only he could do since Narukami knew nothing about the Metaverse or Shadows, so it was something only Akechi could do and he took some pride in the fact he could do something for Shido that Narukami couldn’t, but it didn’t seem to phase Narukami and even seemed supportive of him despite not know what the task was much to Akechi’s annoyance.
Although Narukami seemed like a good person and would probably hate what Akechi was doing for Shido just as much as he did, he was prideful that he had something over Narukami but he wasn’t proud of what it was and he would never tell Narumaki either.
“I’m back!” said Dojima as he slid the door open.
“Welcome home!!” called a young chipper voice from the living room.
The inside of the house was also unimpressive but something about it did make Akechi feel at home, the kitchen was small but cluttered like it had been used recently, the living room was spacious and had a kotatsu in the middle which Akechi could see himself enjoying, and the TV seemed to be playing the news which Akechi was sick of.
“Um...”
“Hm?” Akechi looked down to find a young girl looking up at him from the kotatsu “Oh! Uhh hello there.” the girl had caught him by surprise and it seemed the same could be said for her.
“This is Goro Akechi, Yu’s half brother, he’ll be living with as from now on so make sure he feels welcome ok?” Dojima turned to Akechi “And this is my daughter Nanako, I hope you two get along.”
“Um it’s nice to meet you Nanako-san.”
“U-Uhhh...”
“C’mon Nanako he’s Yu’s brother, so he’s practicality your brother too, so introduce to your new brother!” said Dojima in a playful tone which only caused Nanako to shoot him a look to which he laughed.
“Well, anyway, I should go and pick up Yu from Junes now, I still don’t know why he needs to buy so much stuff that he needs the car to bring it all home.” Dojima turned to the door and said “You two look after each other now, I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
“Ok...” said Nanako in a disappointed tone, Akechi simply nodded, watching as the door shut and the rumbling of the car soon following.
Now he was alone with Nanako and he was at a loss at what to say or do but could just keep standing there so he took a seat at the kotatsu and watched the TV which Nanako also seemed to be doing.
“This is boring...” Nanako then proceed to change the channel which Akechi silently thanked her for, he was so sick of the news more specifically he was sick of being on it and having to put up with news reporters and their fake personalities so he felt blessed he didn’t have to listen to their fake chipper voices right now.
Nanako changed the channel to what seemed to be a quiz show “Hmm...”
“Do you like this show Nanako-san?” said Akechi in an attempt to make conversation since the silence was eating him alive, Nanako glanced at him with a shy look and said “Yeah but I don’t feel like watching it right now” she continued to flip thought channels to find something else when Akechi heard a song he was all too familiar with accompanied by an excited gasp from Nanako.
Go! Go! Let’s go!! Phoenix Ranger Featherman!!!
The campy theme song played throughout the house accompanied by Nanako singing along as Akechi just sat there staring at the TV as the show from his childhood played in front of him, he missed this show which surprised him, he thought he would have outgrown it but he found himself loving it just as much as he did when he was younger and unable to take his eyes off the screen.
“Um...”
“Hm?” Akechi snapped back to reality to find Nanako staring at him once again this time with a look of curiosity, Akechi quickly leaned back realising he had been subconsciously leading forward to get a closer look at the TV.
“S-Sorry! I um!”
“No, no, it’s ok! Umm do you like Featherman Akechi-san?”
“Um y-yes I do.” Akechi’s face went pink at admitting it but he couldn’t exactly say no after staring at the screen like he did.
“Who’s your favorite Ranger?”
Akechi looked down at his lap “Pink Argus...” he could feel his cheeks go from pink to red as he said it.
“She’s my favorite too!!” Nanako had a bright look on her face, it was almost as if the shy girl from earlier had disappeared completely. Then with a look on her face as if she remembered something she stood up and said “Hold on! I’ll be right back!!” and proceed to run upstairs, Akechi could hear the shuffling of what he figured to be boxes and toys so she seemed to have gone to her room, when she found what she was looking for she came back and sat down right next to Akechi and placed a shoe box on the kotatsu.
“Open it!!” she said with an exited giggle, to which Akechi complied and lifted the lid of the box only to be greeted by several Featherman figures, Akechi just stared at them wide eyed as Nanako reached in and handed him the Pink Argus one.
“Here!”
“Ah! T-Thank you.” she then took out the Blue Swan figure and held it in the air.
“My Big Bro got these for me! Let’s play with em!!”
“Really?”
“Yeah!!”
“Ok.”
Akechi and Nanako played with the Featherman figures and took turns playing the villain since Nanako didn’t own any figures of them, and Nanako insisted they hit eachother with the figures to show the Rangers were attacking, Akechi simply tapped Nanako when she was the villain meanwhile Nanako showed no mercy and Akechi could swear one of her hits was going to leave a bruise on his back but he couldn’t complain he was having a lot of fun and did eventually tell Nanako to be gentler to which she apologized.
Soon both of them became hungry and stopped to eat some snacks while still talking about Featherman, the show in question continued to play on the TV as background noise.
Akechi found himself scratching his arm, it seemed the fabric the hoodie that Yu had lent him back in Tokyo was made of didn’t agree with his skin and kinda itchy, Nanako proved to be more observant than Akechi first thought as she exused herself and went upstairs once again only to return with a Phoenix Ranger Featherman shirt.
“Here.”
“For me?”
“Yeah! I use it as a night shirt but you can have it!!” she smiled at him holding the shirt in front of her.
“Thank you Nanako-san.”
“Hehe you’re welcome!”
Akechi took off the hoodie which he wasn’t wearing anything under and put on the Featherman shirt.
“Did your Big Bro get you this too Nanako-san?”
“No, my dad did! Isn’t it cool!!”
“Yes, very cool.” Akechi looked down at the shirt with a smile on his face.
“Oh! By the way you don’t have to be so formal.”
“Hm?”
“You keep calling me ‘Nanako-san’, you don’t have to do that! You can just call me Nanako-chan!!” she gave Akechi a bright smile and he could feel his cheeks go pink once again.
“I-If you say so Nanako-chan.”
“And can I call you Goro?”
Akechi looked at her surprised and then smiled “Sure, Naruka- I mean Yu does that already so I don’t see why you can’t.”
“Yay!!”
Both of them continued to smile and then heard the sound of a car outside.
Nanako let out a gasp as she said “Dad and Big Bro are back!!” and got up grabbing Goro’s hand and dragging him to his feet barely giving him any time to compose himself as she dragged him outside to the car.
“Dad!! Big Bro!! Welcome home!!!”
“Oh well hi there you two!” there stood Yu Narukami holding several Junes bags as Dojima got some out from the other side, “How are you Goro? You think you’ll like it here yet?”
Goro was actually quite happy to see Yu and smiled as he said “It’ll take some getting used to but” he looked down at Nanako who was still holding his hand as she stared excitedly at Yu “yes I think I’ll love it here.”
“That’s good.” Yu said with a calm smile.
“Hey do you mind helping us? Your brother got too much crap at Junes!!” said Dojima with a playful face and an obviously fake angry voice.
“Ok!” said Goro and Nanako in unison, Nanako picked up as many bags as she could carry, while Goro picked up quite a few causing the Dojima family, his family, to marvel at strong he was despite how scrawny he was.
Once all the bags were inside Goro finally asked “What’s all this stuff for?” the bags were filled with either food, ingredients to be made into food which Goro and Yu were taking out of the bags, or clothes.
“Yes Yu I’m sure we’d all like to know” jabbed Dojima from the living room spending time watching TV with Nanako, Yu only rolled his eyes with a smile in response to Dojima, “Well...it’s all for you Goro!”
“Huh?”
“I thought we could hold a party to celebrate your arrival! At least if that’s ok with you?”
Akechi just stood there, he didn’t know what to say, he’d never thought they’d want to celebrate his arrival, “Are you ok?” said Yu with a slightly worried look.
“Huh?! Oh!! Uhhh yeah I’m fine and uhh no I don’t mind having a party.”
“Good cause I already invited my friends and they’ll be here any minute.”
“And when did you plan on telling me this?” said Dojima turning his head to the kitchen, “Uhhh eventually.” was the only thing Yu said in response “Uh huh, sure.” laughed Dojima.
They then heard the ring of the doorbell “Oh well speak of the devil!” Yu went to open the door and Goro could hear a wave of warm greetings when it opened, Goro looked to the living as Nanako jumped up and ran to the door to greet Yu’s friends, Goro had gained not only a brother but also a sister and for the first time in a long, long time he truly felt at home, earlier he told Yu the truth, he was going to love it here.
