Jaco Pastorius unreleased "Teen Town" Weather Report live 1978
youtube
This never-before-heard version of Jaco's "Teen Town" is musically unique and worth hearing. After the tune ends, all four band members walk to the front of the stage to thank crowd. Recorded live 1978, Reading, PA. Weather Report: Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Peter Erskine.
Credits from Peter: "My father Dr. Fred Erskine shot the Washington and Reading videos of Jaco w/ WR (1978). The sound came direct from the front-of-house mix board, engineered by Brian Risner, and my dad was using an old RCA video camera (at least one of those shows without a tripod), a heavy beast of a thing."

Weather Report, "Medley: Badia/Boogie Woogie Waltz"
We start out here, at the Hammersmith Odeon, mid-November 1980, with the tune building a bit, just swinging along, and suddenly you're in the hurtling train, possibly being chased by dragons, that closes the piece.

Kenny Wheeler's Masterpiece: "Music for Large & Small Ensembles"
Introduction: In the realm of jazz composition, few names command as much respect and admiration as Kenny Wheeler. Released in 1990 by ECM Records, “Music for Large & Small Ensembles” stands as a monumental testament to Wheeler’s prowess as a trumpeter, flugelhorn player, and, above all, a brilliant composer. At its core lies “The Sweet Time Suite,” a composition of extraordinary depth and…

Whisper Drumming and Why You Need to Practice It
I was reading a great blog this morning by Cruise Ship Drummer about YouTube drumming videos at an absurd level. By absurd I mean ridiculous content taken to extremes. So much of the Internet bombards us with louder, faster, stronger, that it becomes the norm and the expectation of what we should learn and how we should practice.   We have for at least a decade and will likely continue to be…

The genre of jazz fusion I am currently discussing in here tends to have many famous musicians as all idioms. Well, that goes without saying, every style has the giants many in the tone try to reach. The Weather Report are one of them, though they do differ from many jazz fusion outfits by being established predominantly by jazzists. Of course, the personnel did change consequently and the group became closer to funk among other sounds, but then again jazz fusion was seen as a response towards the rigidity of jazz, which makes this entire ordeal fine, we shouldn't be upset, because there is no monolithic model for the brand. Moreover, their turnaround meant they changed themselves more often and that can only be a good thing.
