Dubai is known as Jewel of Desert. It is one of the Emirates of the most progressive and tolerant country of the Arab peninsula and that is United Arab Emirates. It has 7 Emirates (Provinces) viz. It perfectly combines the conventional values of east & west and synchronizes with different nationalities and cultures. Dubai Airport is the 8th most busy airport of the world. Before the oil was discovered almost 75 years ago in the middle east, Dubai was a small town engaged in Fishing, Sea Perl Diving, Dates Production and Maritime Trading with neighboring countries through sailing Dhows (Wooden Crafted Boats). As compared to other Arab countries, the oil and gas reserves in Dubai are far less and so is the extraction of oil and gas. Due to lack of this natural resource, the Ruler of Dubai, Late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Makhtoum used revenue from trading activities to build infrastructures like electricity, telephone services, ports, airports, hotels and water reservoirs. This type of developments got started in 1955 and gradually became top tourists destination, shopping centre, trading empire and symbol of cultural heritage. Dubai's geographical proximity to Iran, Oman, India and some other countries made it an important trade location. Further Free Port Declaration and Construction of Ports/Buildings/Roads/Trade Centers/Shopping Arcades put Dubai on world trade map. The surge of riches started from 1970 onward because of gold trading, oil & gas production and industrial goods supplies of European origins from Dubai to neighboring Arab countries. Many traders from Iran shifted their base to Dubai due to Iran War-Shia Unrest and many rich Kuwaiti families of Kuwait shifted to Dubai during Gulf War of 1990. The Budhoos, original inhabitants and the most ancient desert tribal people who lived in hard rough weather conditions in olden times when food and water was scarce, gradually disappeared from the scene. They left with their camels and sheep. The travelers, who go deep into the desert, may find them still living in rough weather conditions in primitive way. Modern Dubai looks elegant. It is built on the both sides of creek derived from the close by shore of Arabian Sea. Creek is like a channel or sea stream which is approximately 1.5 kilometer wide. It is the life line of the city as the business thrives on both sides of the creek having trade houses, malls, hotels/restaurants and above all, gold souks in Deira Dubai. Souk is Arabic word meaning place selling single commodity. There you find enormous shops selling gold, diamonds, pearls, jewels and gold ornaments. It is acknowledged that gold and ornaments are readily available in the most pure form and the rates are the lowest as compared to other cities in the world. Dubai is not very large city and you can see it within an hour while moving in a car through some important interiors and you can make a round trip of the main city. Small boats are anchored at both the sides of the creek and swiftly transport passengers from one side to another at nominal charge of 1 Dirham or so. Creek has its own life and you can see some elite families moving in a self propelled boat on creek waters in the evening as if they are strolling. Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. It has 160 storeys and the height is 830 meters from the ground. It is equipped with well controlled superfast lifts. It is an important tourist's attraction. No trip is complete unless you reach Burj Khalifa top to see Dubai from the enclosures and get yourself photographed. It houses hotels, restaurants, apartments and part of Dubai Mall. Dubai Mall is another fabulous place where you can see/buy world class commodities for living, decorating homes, cars, garments, sports goods, toys etc. Dubai Mall is spread on 13 million square foot area and is the world's largest shopping mall. Dubai Horse Race is magnificent annual event which is very popular and draws tourists/punters from world over. It is known as world's most prized horse race. Similarly there are other shows and events which reflect cultural diversity and make Dubai a unique place where life is safe and the crime rate is extremely low. Dubai is famous for taking tourists on tours. There is half day city tour where you can see historical sites and experience vibrant cosmopolitan life of Dubai.
