Joachim Peiper

This is Joachim Peiper timeline:

1915: He was born  on 30 January into a middle class family from the Silesian region of Germany.

1926:  Peiper followed his other brother Horst and joined the Scout movement.

1933:  He volunteered to join the Hitler Youth.

1933: Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany.

1933: He  enlisted in the 7th SS Reiterstandarte. 

1934:  He was promoted to SS-Mann with SS number 132,496.

1934: During the annual Nuremberg Rally, Peiper was promoted to SS-Sturmmann and later gained the attention of Heinrich Himmler.

1935:  He was sent to a camp for Hitler Youth, SA and SS members near Jüterbog, adjoining Germany's largest regular army camp and artillery school. 

1935: He was promoted to SS-Unterscharführer.

1935: He attended the newly created SS-Junkerschule Bad Tölz.

1936: He completed his education at the Junkerschule.

1936:  He attended more training at the Dachau concentration camp.

1936: He took the SS Oath.

1938: He was appointed to an administrative post as an adjutant to Heinrich Himmler, under the command of Karl Wolff.

1939: The Second World War began.

1939: He was with Himmler on 20 September in Blomberg when they witnessed the execution of twenty Poles.

1939:  He worked with Himmler to develop policies and plans for controlling the Polish population.

1939: He and Himmler witnessed the gassing of a resident of a psychiatric facility in Poznan.

1940: He obtained permission to join a combat unit and became a platoon leader in the 11th Company of 1st SS Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH).

1940: He  accompanied Himmler to Madrid where Himmler met with Franco.

1940: He was appointed first adjutant to Himmler.

1940: He was awarded the Iron Cross and promoted to Hauptsturmführer.

1941: He accompanied Himmler when he inspected Ravensbrück and Dachau concentration camps.

1941: Together with Karl Wolff and Fritz Bracht, he and Himmler visited Auschwitz.

1942: He  learned of the death of his brother Hans-Hasso.

1942: The LSSAH was transferred to France for rest and refit. En route to France, Peiper left his unit and met with Himmler at his headquarters on 1 June.

1943: He was promoted to SS-Obersturmbannführer.

1943: He was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold for his achievements.

1943: He  was awarded Germany's highest decoration, the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.

1943:  The LSSAH was withdrawn from the Eastern Front and transferred to the area of Cuneo in Northern Italy.

1943: On 19 September, partisans in the village of Boves captured two of Peiper's men. The two men were freed, but the Germans then set fire to the houses in the village and killed 22 men when they tried to flee. 

1943: Peiper’s unit arrived on the Eastern Front, where it took part in combat in the area of Zhytomyr.

1943:  Georg Schönberger was killed in action, and Peiper took his place as commander of the 1st SS Panzer Regiment; a position he held until the end of the war.

1943:He was awarded the Oak Leaves of the Knight's Cross.

1944: He was withdrawn from the front and left his unit. He went directly to the headquarters of Hitler, who presented him with the Oak Leaves to be added to his Knight's Cross.

1944: He was promoted to Obersturmbannführer.

1945: In January the Swords were added to his Knight's Cross.

1945: His unit took part in Operation Frühlingserwachen that failed even though Peiper’s unit recorded huge casualties due to his aggressive style of command. Peiper lost numerous old companions.

1945: The Second World War ended.

1945: Accompanied by Paul Gühl, Peiper tried to escape captivity.

1945: He was captured near Schliersee. This was less than 30 kilometres from his home. He was interned in the Dachau concentration camp.

1946: His trial took place at Dachau from 16 May to 16 July 1946 before a military tribunal of senior American officers, operating under rules established by the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal.

1946: He was sentenced to death by hanging.

1948: The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

1956: He was released from prison on parole.

1957: He began work at Porsche in Stuttgart in its technical division. 

1964: Two Italians filed an accusation against him at the Central Office of the State Justice Administration for the Investigation of National Socialist Crimes in Ludwigsburg related to the Boves massacre.

1967: The case was dismissed for lack of evidence.

1969: He was a freelance collaborator for the magazine Auto, Motor und Sport.

1972: He moved to Traves.

1976: He was murdered

Birthday - German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (1891-1944) was born at Heidenheim, in Wurttemberg, Germany. During World War II, he led the 7th Panzer Division to victory in the Battle of France. His early victories in North Africa earned him the nickname, "Desert Fox." However, in 1943, he was defeated at El Alamein by the British under General Montgomery. Rommel was implicated in the July 1944 failed assassination of Hitler. He was then forced to commit suicide and died at age 52 on October 14, 1944, near Ulm, Germany.

Neulich hat mich das Schicksal nach Babelsberg verschlagen. Einmal war ich schon hier, vor einem Vierteljahrhundert, beim Nachdreh für die amerikanische Filmproduktion „Enemy at the Gates“. Die ursprüngliche Variante hatte nach Meinung der Produzenten ein zu schmales Happy End, es sollten mehr Blut und Tränen fließen. Ich war einer von tausend Komparsen, die sowjetischen Soldaten spielten. In eine Uniform der Roten Armee verkleidet, mit einem großen angemalten Blutfleck in Bauchhöhe saß ich auf einem Panzer und lächelte fröhlich in die Kamera. Man hatte  mir gesagt, dass ich ernst schauen soll und ich dachte naiverweise, die Amerikaner mögen Menschen, die immerzu lächeln. Wenn ich gut lächel  nehmen sie mich vielleicht nach Hollywood mit.

Wahrscheinlich fanden sie meinen Gesichtsausdruck mit der mir angemalten Verletzung aber nicht kompatibel, die Amerikaner haben mich nicht nur in Deutschland sitzen gelassen, sie haben sogar meine ganze Panzerszene aus dem Film rausgeschnitten. Im Nachhinein bin ich den Amerikanern dafür dankbar, dass aus meiner schauspielerischen Karriere nichts geworden ist. Dafür durfte ich jetzt für das deutsche  Kulturfernsehen 3 Sat eine Dokumentation über Babelsberg drehen. Babelsberg ist ein Friedhof der Träume. Nichts ist in diesen Filmstudios so wie es scheint, alles Attrappe. Die Kunst bildet bekannterweise nicht nur die Realität ab, sie schafft Realität, die wir von der Wirklichkeit nicht immer unterscheiden können.

Nach einer Woche, die ich in Babelsberg verbrachte, kam ich zum Schluss, dass vieles, was ich für meine eigenen Erinnerungen hielt in Wahrheit nur Szenen aus irgendwelchen vor langer Zeit gesehenen Filmen waren. Der Drehort Babelsberg ist vor 120 Jahren entstanden, damals hatte die Stadtverwaltung verboten, in den Wohnvierteln Berlins Filme zu drehen. Die bevorzugten Orte für Dreharbeiten waren Dachgeschoße in  Wohnhäusern, statt Scheinwerfer benutzte man leicht entzündliche Chemikalien und manchmal Fackeln, das analoge Filmmaterial fing Feuer und explodierte wie Schießpulver, sehr zu Verwunderung der Bewohner und dem Unbehagen der Feuerwehr. Also hat man die Kinematographie in Wohngegenden streng verboten. Deswegen haben dann schlaue Künstler in einer leerstehenden Kunstblumenfabrik in Babelsberg Berliner Fassaden nachgebaut. Inzwischen haben sie dort eine ganze Hauptstadt-Attrappe, ursprünglich für die Serie „Babylon Berlin“ gebaut und danach für alle möglichen Filmproduktionen benutzt. Der Hauptstadt-Fake besteht aus vier typischen Berliner Straßen. Es sind zwar nur Fassaden, sie sehen aber wie echt aus, man kann dort schnell eine Abkürzung von Charlottenburg in den Wedding nehmen, oder durch eine Tür im Westen reingehen und eine Sekunde später durch eine andere Tür im Osten rauskommen. Das ist für Verfolgungsjagden perfekt. Überhaupt ist das nachgebaute Berlin viel schöner als die echte Stadt, sauber gefegt, mit lustigen Gardinen an den Fenstern und ohne lästige Touristen, überhaupt ohne Menschen und ohne Verkehr. Jede Stadt sieht ohne Menschen und ohne Verkehr besser aus, Berlin ist aber besonders schön.

Das Filmstudio Babelsberg hat die ganze deutsche Geschichte mitgemacht, zur Zeit der Weimarer Republik anarchistisch verspielt, danach strammer Nazi, dann romantischer Kommunist und nach dem Mauerfall ein knallharter Kapitalist, der mit der ganzen Welt Geschäfte machte. Natürlich war das alles nur Attrappe. Es ging hier schon immer um die Kunst, die Politik benutzte man als Ausrede. Im Museum der Filmgeschichte Babelsberg sind viele Raritäten aus den hundert Jahren ausgestellt, besonders attraktiv und liebevoll wurde jedoch die Geschichte der DEFA erzählt, das niedliche Sandmännchen, der allen, auch Erwachsenen seinen sozialistischen Sand in die Augen streute, das Bett von Paul und Paula mit einer hüpfenden aus Karton ausgeschnittenen Paula in der Mitte und die drei Original- Nüsse vom Aschenbrödel liegen hier unterm Glas, es sind erstaunlich kleine Nüsse, ich hatte sie viel größer in Erinnerung.

Von modernen Filmproduktionen ist im Museum nichts zu sehen. Sie hinterlassen kaum Artefakten. Heute werden die Filme hauptsächlich digital gedreht, die hinterhältige künstliche Intelligenz übernimmt langsam, aber sicher die Filmbranche. Ursprünglich war es eigentlich ganz anders gedacht. In meiner Kindheit war viel von der Robotisierung der Arbeitsprozesse die Rede, es ging in erster Linie darum, dass die Maschinen uns die schwere Arbeit abnehmen, Straßen fegen, Röhren legen und Brücken bauen. Sie sollten Post austragen und Brote backen, während wir von der lästigen Pflicht des Frühaufstehens und der körperlichen Anstrengung befreit uns dem Kaffeetrinken widmen und kreativen Tätigkeiten nachgehen. Genau das Gegenteil ist dabei herausgekommen: Die KI übernimmt die kreativen Berufe, sie möchte malen, dichten, Musik machen, Bücher schreiben und tanzen. Und wir sollen fegen und backen. In Babelsberg hat sich die KI ein eigenes digitales Studio aufgebaut, ein kleiner Raum mit weissen Wänden und Böden wie in einer Irrenanstalt. In die Wände hat man 36 Kameras installiert, die von jedem Mensch schnell eine digitale 3D-Kopie erstellen und abspeichern können.

Abschließend wird dieser abgespeicherte Mensch durch die Landschaften seiner Wahl geschickt, er kann sprechen und Grimassen schneiden, er kann sich selbst Regieanweisungen ausdenken. Die Modelle werden immer echter, die Stars aus Hollywood haben sich leichtsinnig klonen lassen und wissen gar nicht mehr, wie viele sie jetzt sind. Es ist wohl schon vorgekommen, dass irgendwelche künstlich erzeugten Clooneys von sich behaupteten, sie seien die echten. Die Schauspieler sind verständlicherweise in Panik und patentieren ihr Aussehen, damit sie, wenn sie schon nicht mehr mitspielen, dann in Zukunft mindestens die Tantiemen fürs Benutzen ihres Aussehens bekommen - Almosen, die uns die künstliche Intelligenz großzügig überläßt. Manche Clone zucken noch ab und zu ungefragt mit dem linken Auge, doch die Entwickler sind sich sicher, so schnell wie die Maschinen rechnen, wird bald ein geklonter Schauspieler nicht mehr vom echten zu unterscheiden sein. Zurzeit hinkt es noch ein wenig bei der Stimmwiedergabe, erzählten mir die Macher. Eine Stimme ist schwieriger zu berechnen als das Aussehen. Wenn jemand klar und deutlich wie ein Nachrichtensprecher spricht, dann ist so eine Stimme nachzumachen kein Problem. Doch einen russischen Akzent kann die KI zum Beispiel nicht glaubwürdig nachahmen, Auch wenn jemand nuschelt, lispelt oder stottert. Das bringt die KI in völlige Ratlosigkeit. Ich vermute, bald werden wir alle stottern lernen müssen.

It is tied as the sixth-largest earthquake ever recorded in the United States, but there are no reports of significant damage or fatalities. 2018 – A double car bombing in Benghazi, Libya, kills at least 33 people and wounds "dozens" of others. The victims include both military personnel and civilians, according to local officials. 2018 – The China–United States trade war begins when President Donald Trump places tariffs on Chinese solar panels and washing machines. 2022 – Mutinying Burkinabè soldiers led by Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba depose and detain President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré amid widespread anti-government protests.
