Noodle got curious about why everyone was lining up, so she wandered over to see. She sat down and listened intently as the sergeant spoke to his squad. It quickly became a test to see how long the troopers could hold their composure, though, when Noodle started chittering in response to what the sergeant was saying. Despite talking out of turn, she still passed the inspection with flying colors.

Hey so I’ve been wanting to rant about my goobers a lot lately but I have zero confidence to just info dump about them on RDL so I thought instead I can open asks here! I’ve got both Haniel and Otta so feel free to ask whatever you want about them (and send in as many asks as you like I am DESPERATE to talk about these two). You can also ask about Handtern if you wish (Handtern and Haniel are the same character just like in different states of being so I use Handtern to refer to the noodle arm version and Haniel for the human version). Some studies of Chigba and Noodle! When the ottas were babies, Chigba looked after them when the squad was away from the freighter on missions. Originally Chigba was a bit miffed that she was losing even more of her cargo space to make room for the ottas, but she quickly got over that. She ended up growing far more fond of the ottas than she ever anticipated, even if they grew to be twice her height when she specifically told them not to.

And one that has completely compromised my ability to remain neutral. Chigba: Yeah? Nitsani: In a contest between Thea and Noodle, who should be elected as the squad mascot? Chigba: Noodle Nitsani: Why? Chigba: Because I said so, why else? Do you think the ottas would rescue a member of sundown? Like if one of the boys got captured, do you think his otta would track him down? (If they can track to begin with)

Good question! The short answer is yes, but only under certain circumstances.

Ottas do have the ability to track, but the skill has to be taught. Their sensitive whiskers can pick up traces in the air, as well as pick up traces from the ground if they drag their chin whiskers along it (that's how they find plants to eat on the beds of rivers and lakes).

Thea, Noodle, and Riggs were never formally taught how to track over long distances, though. Sundown's equipment takes care of that need. So if a member of the squad goes missing, the ottas wouldn't easily be able to find them on their own if they've been taken a long distance away. They'd need another handler to help direct the search.

Over short distances, however, the ottas absolutely do go after members of the squad to rescue/protect them. Ottas bond strongly to their handlers/pod mates, and are acutely aware when everyone isn't accounted for. Here's a couple of examples of this that happen throughout the story:

Knox gets shot by a droideka, falls off of Thea, and goes unconscious when he hits the ground. Drums has to jump off and sprint for cover to try and draw attention away from Knox. Thea heads back for Knox, and tries nudging him to get him to move. When it's clear he's not going to get up, she stays with him and ends up squaring off with a bunch of droidekas. You can see a loose illustration of that scene here (at the bottom of the post): [Link]

Kess gets injured and is caught out in the open in a precarious situation. He tells Speedy to take Noodle and get out of there. Speedy isn't happy about it, but he listens and rides Noodle back to safety. Speedy hops off, starts talking to the rest of the squad and doesn't hold on to Noodle (usually they stay put without question). Noodle watches the horizon carefully, and when she realizes Kess isn't coming, she suddenly peels off and heads back for Kess. Though Kess is unable to ride at that point, she's able to support and shield him so he can fight back.

Nitsani lures a dangerous enemy away from the squad and the other clones they're working with, and is trapped with them away from reinforcements. Her predicament does not have a good outlook, and it's hard for the squad to get to her. Riggs notices Nitsani is missing and sprints away to find her. Nitsani is moments away from having to fight this enemy alone, but then Riggs comes galloping out of the woods, catching the enemy completely off guard. Riggs grabs the enemy by the leg, hurls them away, and they splash down in the nearby lake. Nitsani is then able to escape with Riggs. When she finds her way back to the squad and they've all made it to safety, they ask her what happened and she just starts laughing. She can barely talk she's laughing so hard. The others are super confused and are like "Oh no, did you get a head injury?" and she's like "No, no, I'm fine. But you're never going to believe what just happened."

If the ottabura are trained to do tricks like 'freeze!' has there ever been an awkward situation where Sundown has almost been arrested because their get away ride decided to listen to the wrong command?

That's hilarious, I love it! :''D They've thankfully never been arrested because an otta misunderstood the assignment, but I could absolutely see the ottas having to think twice if some droid shouted "Freeze, you're under arrest!" at them. The squad would be like "Wait, Noodle, no! Do NOT put your hands in the air!" to try and keep her from accidentally tipping them backwards out of the saddle. Lol The ottas are overachievers, so they'd be eager to try and respond to any command they know. 😂

Firstly: I so adore your lovely creations! The art is stunning and the world building just as lovely! I'm curious which planet your sweet ottaburas "came from"?

Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️❤️ And thanks for asking! I'm still working out a lot of the details, but the gist of it is:

Ottaburas as a species came from a (as of yet unnamed) planet somewhere in the general vicinity of Malastare (though not in the same system). It's a water-logged world with continents that are broken up by massive, interconnected systems of rivers and waterways. The planet itself is pretty hostile to humanoid life (on account of so many of the native terrestrial flora and fauna being poisonous on some level), but there are still sparse ranching and fishing colonies that dot the planet.

As for where Thea, Noodle, and Riggs came from, they were born on a planet that's somewhere on the Perlemian Trade Route (haven't decided which one yet lol). They were originally owned by some ottabura breeders/ranchers. However, they were stolen from their home by smugglers and were taken to the markets on the planet Chazwa where Knox found them. The original owners had absolutely no clue to the ottas whereabouts and had no means to track them down. So Knox, without fully knowing it, did in fact rescue them from a bad situation.

The Ottaburas were obtained through an impulse-buy Knox made at a spaceport livestock sale. Though the purchase was not planned, it quickly became clear that the Ottas would become a great asset to the team. Highly intelligent and maneuverable, Sundown uses the Ottas to get through rough terrain or on recon and infiltration missions where going undetected is absolutely necessary.

Facts:

The oils in the Ottaburas’ coats that make them water resistant also reflects the majority of blaster fire, effectively making them blasterproof.
