I didn’t use the sleeve in the picture above because my water bottle was too thick but its under there. This larger pocket has a sleeve that runs about half way up and covers the width to help you organize. I can show you though! Starting with the smaller pouch which Osprey calls the slash pouch. I was able to fit a large water bottle, two small tripods, a GoPro, GoPro battery, micro spikes in a bag, my wallet, and keys. Overall, the storage is surprisingly large for such a small pack. The Osprey Daylite Sling has two main storage pockets along with a sleeve on the strap for sunglasses or small sunscreen. The Osprey Daylite Sling lays properly on the back. (Later I will talk about an issue I had with the strap.) I thought for sure it would feel like it was angled or the weight would shift but I have not found that. The Sling distributes the weight really well and when adjusted properly fits in the same spot on the back as a normal pack. What really surprised me was that this pack felt like a regular two strap pack on my back. The mesh back of the pack was really comfortable although I did hike in the winter with a couple of layers and a jacket to add to the padding. The most important part for me was that the weight of the pack fell directly on the center of my back. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it fit. I really didn’t think this pack was going to be comfortable with its cross body style. LEGO won't make modern war machines, but others are picking up the pieces This is a story about a multibillion-dollar international conglomerate, arms manufacturers, a German peace group and renegades who make miniaturized weapons systems out of small shops.Not that those tiny weapons could actually hurt anyone. Well, not unless you stepped on one.The conglomerate is LEGO, with worldwide revenues of $6.2 billion in 2019 from its toys, retail stores, theme parks and even movie rights. Its toy sets -- which are intended to "inspire the builders of tomorrow," according to the company's mission statement -- run the gamut, from skyscrapers to boats, police stations to castles. There's even a kit to make Rome's famous Colosseum. Nothing from the real world, it seems, is off limits. That is, except for anything modeled on today's military. "We have a long-standing policy of not creating sets which feature real military vehicles that are currently in use," Ryan Greenwood, a spokesman for the company, said in an email to CNN.But during the summer, the Danish company released a set for the V-22 Osprey, a tiltrotor aircraft manufactured by Boeing and Bell Helicopter Textron that is only used by the American and Japanese militaries.LEGO pulled its V-22 Osprey amid protests from a German anti-war group. Credit: LEGOThe kit, set to launch under LEGO's vehicle-focused Technic brand, depicted a search and rescue version of the Osprey. But it drew a quick, harsh protest from the German Peace Society -- United War Resisters (DFG-VK in German), an almost 130-year-old anti-war group.The V-22 Osprey, the group said, has been involved in conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Mali, Yemen and Syria. Although built from LEGO pieces, this one is bigger and, arguably, even more elaborate and life-like. He spun its tiltrotor propellers in a hand-held simulated flight.Siskind is a former "master builder," the top LEGO designers who assemble the models you find displayed in stores. He is now part of a subculture that unites adult fans of LEGO (or AFOLs as they are known) and military buffs. Through his company, Brickmania Toyworks, the 51-year-old takes the iconic bricks and turns them into custom military building kits spanning eras and multiple wars. An arms bazaar for AFOLs, his inventory includes a US F-16 fighter ($425), a Russian T-80BVM main battle tank ($340) and even a Phalanx close-in weapon system, the rapid-fire Gatling gun the US Navy puts on its warships to knock out incoming threats like missiles or speedboats ($175).There are also historical options, such as a Vietnam War-era Soviet MiG-21 fighter, a World War II Japanese A6M2 Zero or British Spitfire Mk I fighter plane, a US M4A3 Sherman or German Panzer IV Ausf G tank, or a World War I British biplane, all priced around $200.For those with lower budgets, micro military vehicle sets are sold for around $20.The parts are almost all genuine, made with new-condition LEGO bricks. But while the Danish company does not endorse its products being used for these purposes, it tolerates the practice, Siskind said."They've given us some guidelines -- here's how to stay out of trouble."He's nonetheless blunt in describing his job. "It's just stuff we've taken that weren't supposed to be made into military things, (that) we've made into military things," Siskind explained. "Ordinary LEGO bricks just used in a way they were never intended to be used." Because he isn't allowed to purchase bricks directly from LEGO for his military sets, sourcing is "one big, continuous scavenger hunt" that requires his staff to comb through Walmarts, Targets and toy stores for discounts on original sets. The company also uses the website Bricklink, a kind of eBay for LEGO parts, where specific bricks can be bought and sold. Armed with 40mm and 105mm cannons and a 25mm Gatling gun, it can devastate an area in seconds, earning it the nickname the "Angel of Death" in military circles. When the company made the first 25 models available, they sold out in five hours. A second batch then went in the same amount of time, Siskind said. "We have more demand than we can keep up with."While Siskind will sell you a military kit, his company also encourages AFOLs to produce their own creations, sponsoring regular contests at Brickmania's flagship store in Minneapolis. Among the rules: They must be military or war-themed, bear no Nazi symbols, display no excessive gore and are not of the sci-fi or fantasy genres. "Our idea has been to create a toy that prepares the child for life -- appealing to its imagination and developing the creative urge and joy of creation that are the driving forces in every human being," he said.Over the years, wheels and human figures were introduced in 1962 and 1978 respectively. And in 1989, miniature human figures sporting more facial expressions than the usual slight smile also emerged.LEGO has also been determined to put smiles on the faces of children."As a family-owned company with a long-term mission, the LEGO Group is uniquely placed to deliver a positive impact on children, society and the planet," the company profile says. The 25-page company document mentions the words "child" or "children" nearly 100 times. Still, as LEGO grew over the years, so did the presence of weapons.A 2016 report analyzing the company's products, published on the peer-reviewed scientific investigation journal PLOS One, argues that LEGO sets "are not as innocent as they used to be" and have become increasingly violent over time. Since 1978, when the first weapon bricks -- a sword, a halberd and a lance -- were added to castle-themed LEGO sets, there the amount of weaponry has increased each year, according to the study. "I took a Ford and I did a bunch of stuff to it."In the case of LEGO parts, he added, "It's a genuine LEGO minifigure that has had a bunch of aftermarket stuff done to it. I bought it, and it's mine. One showed a futuristic olive green vision of an Osprey with orange highlights, created by builder Simon Liu, using LEGO bricks.Brothers Brick contributor, Lino -- a Washington state-based artist and humorist, according to his biography -- drew inspiration from Liu's creation."The point of showing you this is, while LEGO occasionally makes doofus decisions, they provide the pieces so that you can build anything you want. I have bought a lot of gear the last couple years. Here are my top 9 favorite things I’ve bought in the last couple years. Things I use on almost every adventure and I will continue to support and buy more of in the future. If you have any questions let me know.

MY FAVORITE GEAR OF 2018:

1. Topo Athletic HydroVentures

-probably my favorite purchase this year. These are the shoes I’ve been looking for my entire life. Wide toe area for people like me with a little wider feet. Not a very high arch so they feel normal since I wear Vans the rest of the time. Waterproof! I have hiked and backpacked in rain and snow this year in these. Amazing grip. Ran down trails in the rain and never slipped once. And SUPER lite. Barely feel like you have them on your feet. I may end up buying the TerraVentures(non-waterproof version) soon also.

2. Omega Pacific Jake Quick-lock Carabiner.

-I have been using these carabiner for 6 years maybe? I’ve bought 2 quick-locks and a screw gate version. My favorite carabiner I’ve ever used. Easy to open with 1 hand and the gate opens kinda sideways so you can get things in and out easier. It’s 13mm wife so I have no problems valeting or repelling with it. This is a carabiner that I use every single time I climb.

3. GSI outdoors Java Press

-if you need coffee like me, this is my pick of the year for a backpacking/camping/at home coffee French press. It weighs 10oz. and holds 30 ounces. I have to drink at least 2 cups of coffee and this is plenty for 4. What I was super happy with was how well it was insulated. I usually have to make coffee and immediately put it in a thermos. This thing kept it hot and I never needed to. Easy to clean. Great filter. A+.

4. Snowpeak Titanium Spork.

-I bought this just for fun with my rei dividend. Little did I know how much I’d actually use it. It actually stays in my day backpack wherever I go, whether I’m on tour or at work or mountain biking or wherever. Always have it. Always comes in handy with I’m not at home. Just makes me happy.

5. Marmot Tungsten 2P UL tent

-this tent one of my biggest gear purchases and worth every penny. It weighs just over 3lbs and plenty of room for 2 people with with covered areas outside the tent to put shoes or your backpack or whatever. I have spent plenty of rainy and windy nights in this tent over the last month even and it’s a champ. Also with the design the walls of the tent never get wet so you don’t wake up soggy from touching the sides of the tent. Plus the color is cool.

6. Osprey Exos 58 backpack

-one of the lightest packs out there(2lbs 5oz) and still super comfy. I’m so glad I got this pack. For one I’m a huge supporter of Osprey and their life guarantees and build quality. Fantastic company. As great as their guarantees are, I’ve never actually had to send a backpack back to them. I’ve have osprey backpacks for 15 years and never had one break so far. The Exos is made for Ultra Light backpacking but I use it for everything. Fantastic for thru hikes, climbing approaches, and take off the lid for smaller day hikes. Comfortable all day.

7. Cocoon Mummy Liner

-if you spend any amount of time in a sleeping bag, a liner is key. Honestly I got this because it was the cheapest one at rei. But I’m super happy with it. Awesome micro fiber material feels like my sheets at home and an amazing amount of warmth from them. On hot nights I just lay on top of my sleeping back with this on and on cold nights this added a lot to my 25° sleeping bag. One laundry day just throw it in with your clothes and you have a clean place to sleep each night.

8. iPhone 7

-what can I say about smartphones? By far my most used piece of equipment I think. Not that I’m on my phone texting or Snapchating all the time. But having an awesome camera at my disposal all the time and using the maps EVERYWHERE I go. As a photographer iPhones are insane with what they can do and half or more of my pictures are from them. Combine those with the Mountain project and All Trails apps and your start to any adventure is super easy!! I cannot tell you how much Mountain Project saved our butts when climbing since we don’t have guide books. We probably would just never find anything ever. And the iPhone 7 and newer phones are waterproof. Boom. Thank God.

9.Columbia Bugasweat Joggers

-I’m a jogger fan through and through. The mixture of comfort and flexibility and looks and the cuffs at your ankles staying out of the way has changed my life. It basically all I wear. Mostly cheaper versions but for backpacking, climbing and all other extreme sports I wanted a step up in quality. This is them. Finally I found the pair of pants I’ve been looking for. Great quality, water resistance, big zippered pockets for handstand and climbing and not losing things and padded knees. It’s Cotton and Polyester so much better than all cotton pants(cotton kills). And all in all, well worth the money. A lot cheaper than a lot of other climbing pants and I think these are better.

Gear Review

Happy Friday! At long last, it’s time for the gear review. Overall, the immense amount of time and energy spent carefully researching, testing, and purchasing my gear paid off in a big way as the ‘kit’ I started with was essentially the same one I finished with. Some hot-weather swaps, a new pillow, and a whole bunch of shoes and socks are basically the only changes I made over the course of 4+ months and 2,000+ miles. As such, the grading breakdown is basically the Good and the Okay.

THE GOOD

Clothing, A+

Clothing was the top-performing category and everything I wore/carried onto Springer Mountain survived into Maine. My initial choices and layering philosophy were spot-on with only a few weather-related swaps during the course of the hike. Highlights include my versatile Patagonia Terrebonne rain/camp pants - a favorite on and off the trail - and my merino T-shirt and hooded quarter-zip mid layer that held up remarkably well to tremendous sweat and abuse. The one notable change: moving to Outdoor Research synthetic boxers after my Smartwool boxers’ natural fibers wore out around mile 700. I stayed comfortable throughout the full range of temperatures and absolutely loved having long sleeves and a hood in camp, even during the height of summer, to keep mosquitos at bay. In all the pictures of myself, the length of my beard is the only thing that changes.

Sleep System, A

My beloved Big Agnes inflatable sleeping pad finally began slowly leaking air a few days before reaching Monson, a remarkable performance given its heavy use and abuse. Best of all, Big Agnes stands by their products and has offered to ship me a replacement at no cost after I was unable to find the leak upon my return home. My down quilt was warm, sometimes too warm, but always comfortable during cold nights, highly versatile, and lightweight. The Nemo Fillow pillow I picked up early on in Georgia to replace a leaky Klymit inflatable was solid throughout. The only minor ding in this category was the 50 degree sleeping bag I was forced to quickly order in Pennsylvania after realizing that the summer nights were too chilly for just a liner sheet, proving just a little thin on occasion. That one is mostly on me for not being prepared or able to sufficiently shop around.

Hydration, A-

This is an area I thought a lot about going into my hike and one that I feel pretty good about at the end. The CNOC bag was worth every penny and more, especially with the addition of the coupling ring to attach my Smartwater bottles. Consistently opting for the 750mL bottles over the 1L bottles was a great way to avoid over-carrying water and the smaller size was generally easier to deal with vis-a-vis side pockets. The slow flow of my Sawyer Micro was a major pain point at first but entirely rectified by switching to the Sawyer Squeeze. I might have opted for the larger 3L CNOC in retrospect to eliminate the double trips to the water source in camp but that’s a minor complaint. I also feel like there’s a way to better block some of the crud from going into the filter but, again, this is a nitpick. Overall a much better time than my first big hike with a Mini strapped to the top of my water bottles.

Pack, B+

I went through two packs on trail, with Osprey graciously sending me a new Exos pack after my older model Exos began tearing at the seams before Harpers Ferry. Both were solid but neither were perfect. I had heavily modified the older model, resulting in some interesting cinching and buckling. The ‘flap jacket’ on the new model was far more streamlined but the pack also featured no organizing or hip belt pockets, just the back mesh panel and a cavernous interior. While I appreciated the stability of the rigid frames and relatively light weight of both packs, I wouldn’t describe either set of shoulder straps as particularly comfortable. I would have liked to test drive more packs, especially from some of the cottage brands, but overall got great value and good performance.

Cook System/Food Storage, B+

My cook system was mostly good throughout, just bulky/heavy. The scent-proof Opsak bags were mostly a waste and I consistently had trouble fitting all my food stuffs into one. I eventually began just storing food in gallon freezer bags and stacking those in the Ursack bear-proof bag. Regarding the Ursack, I can’t complain since it meant never having to hang a bear bag or worry about mice, though the prevalence of bear cables/boxes on trail and overall lax food storage practices towards the end meant I probably could have gotten away with a standard dry sack. I mostly loved my Jetboil, appreciating its speed and fuel-sipping efficiency, but it was often awkward to fit in the Ursack and in my pack and always a pain to clean out. I hung onto my Talenti jars for far too long, loving it as a separate mug even after I gave up cold soaking breakfast but always finding myself short on space. Would definitely rethink for future trips, perhaps looking into the lighter, more-versatile Jetboil Stash.

THE OKAY

Shelter, B

I loved my tent, my Juliet, but its propensity to leak prevents any higher grade than a B. On clear days, the tent was perfect, easy to site with its small footprint, easy to pitch with only two stakes, and right-sized for my 5’9” frame. In inclement weather, however, the overhead seams would saturate and eventually leak despite an attempted resealing during my DC stopover. Worse, the low walls of the bathtub floor and short overhang of the fly meant significant splash back during heavy rain. The doors and vestibules on both sides were super useful but still small and vulnerable to rain; with no room in the tent for my pack, I eventually began to store the pack with its rain cover on as a precaution. Big shoutout to my Tyvek footprint which was used under my tent, in the shelters, and sometimes on trail when I didn’t want to sit in the dirt. Only wish I had cut it just a little wider to provide a floor under the vestibules.

Footwear, B-

This is a tricky one because I went through SO MANY pairs of shoes and experienced a fair amount of foot soreness but also had exceedingly few blisters or other foot ailments. Some recency bias is also at play with this grade. The two pairs of Timps I wore for the first 1000 miles were solid, no complaints. The switch to the minimally-cushioned Superiors for Pennsylvania was perhaps ill-advised in retrospect, but it’s hard to assign sole (ha) blame for my foot soreness when I was pushing big miles over such rocky terrain. My return to Timps was marred by the fact that pair #3 blew out so dramatically at the start of the White Mountains and after less than 400 miles. I came to love my final pair of shoes, the Merrell Moab Speed Mid GTXs, but they were expensive, required safety pins to affix my gaiters, and showed unacceptable signs of wear after only 50 miles. Thankfully Merrell rectified the situation with a new pair once I got off trail. Additionally and annoyingly, I went through a lot of socks, at least 4 pairs of Injinjis that always wore through at the big toe. Superfeet insoles at $50 a pop were another surprise recurring expense and I remain on the fence regarding their role in alleviating my early shin splints. Finally my camp shoes, the expensive and not-exactly-ultralight Xero Z-Trek sandals, were only okay, offering good stability but NO cushioning over rocks and roots. In the end I made it 2,000+ miles on foot so I clearly did okay here overall.

Rain Protection, C

I should first acknowledge that all rain gear is mostly a waste on trail. If it rains, you’re going to be wet and no rain gear is going to keep you dry for long; you’ll sweat through or the gear will wet through. I quickly learned to hike wet, temperatures permitting, and rarely wore my jacket outside of camp. Despite its light use my jacket attained and still retains a distinct mustiness. I picked up the pack cover at a shelter, and found it somewhat useful in keeping items stored on the exterior of my pack from getting soaked or caught in branches, but it collected water at the bottom and never kept the pack fully dry. That meant nearly always using a pack liner. Word of advice: skip the far-too-fragile liners from the outfitter and just go with the tried-and-true heavy duty trash bag.

Ditto for the Casio F-91W digital watch I picked up in Virginia. This thing is bulletproof, and once I started paying attention, I saw them everywhere on trail. I swear Casio needs to lean into this popularity and become the official watch sponsor of hiker trash.

Headlamp, A(AA)+

I used my headlamp basically every night for 140+ nights to journal, and went through ONE set of batteries! They pooped out on literally the last night on trail. Amazing performance.
