And...they’re back...
Tumblr media
Well...I didn’t really see this coming but news dropped yesterday that the planned 2023 movie will feature the 2009 cast (minus, sadly, Anton Yelchin of course). I’m not really here to talk the latest Trek news but I’ve been in a bit of a Trek rhythm the past few days so why not?
As evidenced by this recent post I didn't think the return of that cast was necessarily likely—after all, it’s been almost six years since Beyond, it felt like the franchise had moved on but it seems that’s not the case after all. Cool, I say though again, the movies don’t feel as important as they did when they were the only Star Trek being produced. I wonder what place the movie will find the characters. The movie’s scheduled for late 2023 release, which will be over seven years after Beyond so you’d think they’d almost have to have the movie  take place a number of years after the events of that last one.
I’m a ship guy, not everyone is but being one, I also wonder what they’ll do with the Kelvin Timeline Enterprise-A—presumably we’ll finally get to see what it looks like on the inside. I’m hoping for a completely new bridge design since I didn’t think the KT 1701 bridge was very inspired, not to mention over-lighted (though they did seem to tone down the lighting a bit in Beyond). I have a bit of a soft spot for the original E-A in part because it had one of my favorite bridge designs both in STV and STVI form. I’m not saying it should look just like the prime timeline version but that wouldn’t be a bad place to take inspiration and some visual allusions to it would be a nice nod. Will there be any changes to the outside? We only saw the E-A briefly but I thought it looked a lot better than the 2009 Enterprise (even if some of the design is still a little odd).

Also, what is it going to be about? I’m not actually someone who’s generally in too much of a hurry to know but it’s hard not to be curious. I don’t get the impression (though I could be wrong) they’re doing the Kirk meets his father story that at one point was what the studio wanted to make. You might recall there were reports there were some issues with what the studio wanted to pay Chris Hemsworth to return as George Kirk (his star obviously having risen quite a bit since the first Kelvinverse movie) and if that wasn’t bad enough ‘twas the same with Chris Pine. Clearly that they’re announcing the 2009 cast returning implies they’ve worked things out with Pine. (Update: it might’ve implied that but astoundingly that apparently isn’t the case for Pine or any of the cast (!) It would be interesting to have explored what KT Kirk’s father means to him especially since the fact that he never knew his father is a key difference between him and Kirk prime. Or there’s the idea I had in a Facebook post in 2018:
Clearly they should include both Chrises (?) but trim some salary by bringing in Hemsworth only for a cameo and by a cameo I mean not one as George Kirk but as Thor--hey, they've encountered gods on Star Trek before...
Okay, there are practical franchise reasons that wouldn’t ever happen but would it be fun? Yes.
Now I’ve put in several caveats about this upcoming movie because other than it indeed featuring the 2009 cast and its release date etc, we know almost nothing about it. Yes, I’d imagine the crew will be on the E-A but is that a certainty? A interesting element of Beyond was that the crew actually wasn’t on the Enterprise for most of the movie it’ll be cool if this one does some different things.
I have mixed feelings about the first two KT movies - I think there were plenty of strong points but they were pretty conventional story-wise--I’m not looking for surrealism or anything but something fresh and inventive shouldn’t be too much to ask. So not, say, a pastiche of a beloved previous film of the same number as a previous Trek movie series (in other words, whales are great but please no whales) and I enjoyed Into Darkness but it was kind of a weird approach: ‘hey, we have this new timeline where we can do new things...so let’s sorta-kinda redo one of the greatest stories from the original timeline...’ We did get USS Vengeance out of it which if you see my avatar I’m a fan of but creatively the film was perhaps not the best approach. Beyond was a good course correction though unfortunately not a huge hit and that’s how we ended up here, haven’t seen these folks in Star Trek in half a decade (!) I’ll be glad to see them in the future again.
Edit: Supplemental: Per the update above, yes, it's subsequently come out that despite it being announced at an investor event that the next movie would feature the 2009 cast, the studio hasn't actually come to an agreement with any of them yet so while on the one hand announcing something would suggest the studio's pretty set on making it happen, it actually isn't a done deal at all yet. So...look forward to seeing them again in the future again...(maybe).
