A Captive State

A Captive State is an upcoming action adventure video game from the Tom Hoffman's novel from 2016, Beneath a Captive State, and its film adaptation, and the spiritual sequel to 2018's To The Extinction. It was developed and published by WB Games, Annapurna Interactive and Square Enix. Set in the 1990s Chicago, when the city was torn apart between the Legion Horde and the human inhabitants of the city. The alien invasion of Chicago had become widespread, after the city suffers from the great heatwave of 1995. Players take control of many individuals whom were fighting for their lives in the war-torn Chicago, and eventually stopping the infamous Project Anvil (a scientific project created by the US military that helped to defend Chicago from the alien invaders, also the outsiders too). It is set to be released on 18 January 2019 through Xbox One, Playstation 4, Microsoft Windows, and Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay

A Captive State is an action adventure role playing game, that features many similar gameplay mechanics and environment from its predecesor, To The Extinction. It supports 4-player co-op. The game also features an elements of life simulation, which players can buy some items for the unlimited amount of inventory. Aside from the player-generated individuals, players can take control of four main characters; Gabe, Rafe, Rula, and Jurgis. "As its predecesor To The Extinction, A Captive State follows the amazing blend of Grand Theft Auto 5, Just Cause, Prototype, InFamous, Gears of War, Fallout 4, Singularity, and Dark Sector", developer Annapurna Interactive explained. The main enemies were revealed as the Legion Horde, FBI and the US military. Some of the other enemies, such as hobos, cultists, and several other people. The iOS, Android, 3DS, and PSVita versions looks more isometrically point of views, rather than PC and console versions.

Plot summary

A Captive State takes place during the mid-to-late-1990s Chicago, when the alien invaders known as the Legion Horde, had invaded the entire city after the great heatwave that ravaged the entire city. Players takes on the Rittenhouse Corporation, a private military contractor that is made up of the banished US military personel and it is led by Staff Sergeant Alan Rittenhouse (Darius Rolince), formerly of the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division. Their main opponents were the illusive man (Quinten Hyde) and his wife (Lauren Jane Koons), Colonel Charles Levitt (Zachary Zakibe) of the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division, and FBI Agent Stuart Kermode (Jordan Brenda).

A Captive State begins in October 1969, when the three-day communist uprising in Chicago known as Days of Rage had began with the student protests. On 11 October 1969, a group of alien invaders known as the Legion Horde (called Scavengers in A Captive State) invaded and inherited the entire city of Chicago. A group of cultists, known as The Disciples, had established shortly after the alien invasion of Chicago, and their main purpose is helping the Scavengers to defend Chicago from the US military intervention. In 1979, the US Army (with the help of the US Marines) had intervened the city of Chicago amidst the alien invasion of Chicago ten years earlier.

In 1989 (ten years after the US military intervention in Chicago), Raphael "Rafe" Conway had being held orphanage in Chicago by the US military, after his parents were killed by Colonel Charles Levitt's men. A few days later, Brian "Jurgis" McPhee moved to the apartment Wicker Park in Chicago, after his parents were killed by the US military raid in his birthplace in Tinley Park.

Six years later in April 1995, while in Pilsen, Gabriel Conway (Victor Kamanga), Raphael "Rafe" Conway (EJ Wilkes), and Carrie Conway (Steph Oliver) were celebrating their Thanksgiving party in Aragon Ballroom, when the rock band The Nailed played their gig inside. After he meets one of his friends at the party, Rafe meets Brian "Jurgis" McPhee (Jared McKenna) who claimed his new name after he had a sex with his Lithuanian boyfriend while visiting to Chicago. A few hours later, the group of the police officers, FBI agents and the US military personnel raided Aragon Ballroom soon after The Nailed's gig ended. Rafe then rescues Jurgis, but he knocked out by the FBI agent after he fails to rescue him. After that, Ellison (Tyler Brown) and Rafe were also sent into Chicago MCC. Outside Aragon Ballroom, the two of them were rescued by Rula McPhee (Kody Theo) and her British boyfriend Danny Howells (Miles Rich).

In July 1995, after he locked up in jail, Jurgis awakens inside Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center. His name was revealed by the Chicago Police Department, after he had abandoned and murdered his Lithuanian boyfriend visiting to Chicago. By early morning, while Jurgis killed one of his cellmates with the kitchen

knife, the raid had began around the prison, but Rafe and Frank keeps Jurgis into safety from the prison guards. After the raid breaks out inside the Chicago MCC, Gabe and Rula finds her brother Jurgis and her boyfriend Ellison escaping from Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. The great heatwave in Chicago had caused many Scavengers inherited the city. A few days later inside his bedroom in Wicker Park apartment, Jurgis tells his friends about the alien invasion that caused by the great heatwave in Chicago.

By 4 December 2018, many DLCs of A Captive State had unveiled their summary;

The Tale of Jurgis;

The first DLC of A Captive State. In 1993, before teaming up with Rula McPhee, Jurgis McPhee travels to London, to uncover his own identity leading to his name change. Unfortunately, Jurgis teams up with Danny Howells and his brother Martin (Jacob Bartosz), a young boy who helps to reveal Jurgis's identity after changing his name from Brian McPhee. Jurgis and Danny were approached by the MI6 about the changing name of Brian McPhee himself. Suddenly, Jurgis, Martin, and Danny fights off against the British military whom where attacking the alien invaders around London.

I Am Rula;

The second DLC. In 1992, Rula McPhee takes her side with the Hell's Angels motorbike club in Joliet. They preparing their fight against the alien invaders and the US military.

The Brothers Conway;

The third DLC tells the story of Rafe Conway, few years before teaming up with his brother Gabe. In 1989, he was examined by the FBI agent James Kermode for hunting the mysterious alien race near the outskirts of Chicago. Two years later, he teams up with his younger brother Gabe and his friend Rula, to hunt down the group of the alien-friendly cultists known as The Disciples.

The Beginning of and End;

The fourth and final DLC of A Captive State, it split into two parts;

- The first part, took place between 1989 to 1991, which the players assume the role of Colonel Charles Levitt, who was the member of the 3rd Infantry Division. He and his men were take their tour of duty in Panama, in which he encounters the alien race whom later to defend Chicago from the US military. He ended his relationship with Alan Rittenhouse, when he takes his own revenge after the end of Persian Gulf War. As the result, Rittenhouse later banished from the US Army to form his own private military contractor, known as Rittenhouse Corporation. They were opposed to the both US military and the alien invaders whom were inherited all over Chicago.

- The second and last part, took place between 1986 through 1988, which players takes control of FBI agent Stuart Kermode, whom were the part of the alien investigators in Chicago led by his father, agent James Kermode. He and his team were heading to Tinley Park, where Jurgis McPhee was apparently killed by the mysterious alien invaders. Although he presently living in Chicago's Wicker Park, 16432 Parliament Avenue in Tinley Park was Jurgis McPhee's place of birth.

Introduced for later DLCs were; Lee-Enfield, Sterling SMG, Bren MG, FN Minimi, SA80, RPD, SPAS-12, Famas, MAT-49, PPSh-41, PPS-43, Tokarev TT, Makarov, DShK, KPVT, and Stechkin APS.

Factions

Hell's Angels, was one of the first motorcycle clubs. Jurgis and Ellison were known to be the part of the Hell's Angels motorcycle club. It is one of the primary group of protagonists of the story.

The United States Armed Forces, was the military forces of the United States, and it served as one of the primary group of antagonists in A Captive State. Colonel Charles Levitt serves as the main antagonist of A Captive State, but he takes a part against the alien invasion over Chicago.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is the domestic intelligence and security service organization of the United States of America, and it served as one of the main antagonists of the story. Stuart Kermode was the high ranking FBI agent, and he takes a part of the protection against the alien invaders in Chicago.

Rittenhouse Corporation, was the private military contractor based in Joliet, Illinois. Led by Alan Rittenhouse, formerly of the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division. It is one of the primary group of protagonists of the story. The main purpose of Rittenhouse Corporation, is helped to end the alien threat over Chicago and overtake the city from the US military.

The Disciples was a group of cultists based around Chicago, whom were the part of the Legion Horde (called Scavengers in the entire story), the hereditary alien race whom were inherited Chicago two decades earlier. Expert in firearms, the Disciples was the one of the primary group of antagonists, alongside the Legion Horde, FBI and the US military. The group is likely modelled and named after the real life Disciples street gang in Chicago, however, the real Disciples were not actually the group of cultists.

The Phoenix Group, was a private military company led by Rafe Conway, established around 1993. One of the most important members was Gregory Hayes, a young doctor working inside Mount Sinai Hospital in West Side Chicago suburb.

Character summaries

Brian "Jurgis" McPhee (born 1983), is one of the four main protagonists of the story, he was the older brother of Rula McPhee. He was the only two of four main protagonists (supposedly alongside Gabe Conway), to having their mysterious abilities from the aliens. Born in the village of Tinley Park, At the age of 3, Jurgis was attacked by the mysterious alien invaders while he was sleeping in the bedroom of his family home in Tinley Park (Illinois), and he suddenly became stubborn and kleptomaniac. By the age of 7 in 1990, Jurgis left orphaned after his family were murdered by the US military. After his parents were murdered by the US military, Jurgis moves in the Wicker Park by his friends from Tinley Park. Jared McKenna portrayed Brian "Jurgis" McPhee. After Jurgis went out of jail, Rula discovers his new name was faked, and that his real name was Brian McPhee. He claimed his new name after murdering his abandoned Lithuanian boyfriend in Chicago. Alongside his adopted sister Rula, Jurgis was an avid heavy metal fan. His favourite hobby was playing guitar and skateboards. His favourite radio station were Adrenaline 90.4, Juvenile 101.5 and Chicago Hardcore. Although he was born in London, Jared McKenna had started his acting career in 2006, while he first appeared in the long running police procedural series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and in 2007, his feature film debut was Joe Wright's period drama Atonement. He took his recent success in the 2018 movie Solo: A Star Wars Story, while portraying the young Han Solo. In January 2017, Jared McKenna had officially cast as Brian McPhee in A Captive State. Jared McKenna had cited Cole McGrath from InFamous and Stranger Things's Mike for his portrayal of Brian McPhee.

Caroline "Rula" McPhee (born 1984), is one of the four main protagonists of the story, and she was the adopted sister of Brian McPhee. Her birth name was Caroline Howells. She was dressed like a young boy, to avoid her childhood memories. Rula's parents were originally from Britain, but she left orphaned after her parents were murdered by the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division while visiting Navy Pier in Chicago. She was a biggest fan of rock music. She lives in Pilsen neighbourhood with her boyfriend Narciso "Nark" Hernandez (Randy Lopez). Her favourite radio station was Adrenaline 90.4 and Willows 103.1. Lesbian actress Kody Theo portrayed Rula McPhee. She came out gay at the age of 7 in 2010, and she made her acting debut in her native Ireland with TRTE's children's show Roy. At the age of 10 in 2013, she made her breakthrough role in the UK with BBC's long running medical drama Casualty. In January 2017, Square Enix had already found the 14-year old Irish actress Kody Theo (Casualty, Roy), for auditioning the role of Rula McPhee.

Gabriel Conway (born 1985), is one of the four main protagonists of the story. Victor "Vic" Kamanga portrays Gabe Conway. After his parents were murdered by the members of the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division, Gabe finds his childhood memories leading to the alien invasion of Chicago. While auditioning for Gabe, Square Enix already found Vic Kamanga, when he played the role of Alessio Jones in Spectral earlier in 2016. In January 2017, Vic Kamanga had choosen to play the role of Gabe Conway in A Captive State, and the motion capture work had began earlier.

Raphael Conway (born 1979), is one of the four main protagonists of the story. Ernest Jamieson "Ernie Jay" Wilkes portrays Rafe Conway. Gabe and Rafe shared their relationships together. After his parents were murdered by the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division, Rafe and Gabe reunited together when they're returned back to their home in Chicago. When he was only 5 years old in 2007, Ernie Jay Wilkes made his acting debut with the long running BET sports drama series The Game. At the age of 11, Ernie Jay Wilkes made their breakthrough career in Starz's hip-hop drama Power, which features the legendary rapper 50 Cent and Omari Hardwick.

Caroline "Carrie" Conway is portrayed by Steph Oliver. She was the younger sister of Gabe and Rafe Conway.

Colonel Charles Levitt is one of the main antagonists in A Captive State, he was the member of the United States Army's 3rd Infantry Division. Zachary "Zack" Zakibe portrayed Colonel Charles Levitt. A distressed Persian Gulf War veteran, Colonel Levitt takes a part of the protection against the alien invasion of Chicago that happened after the great heatwave. Zakibe had cited Cyrus Temple in Saint's Row: The Third as one of many strong stylistic influences on his portrayal of Colonel Levitt. "A Captive State will not featuring the US Navy, the US Marine Corps will also included", Zack Zakibe explained about his role as Colonel Levitt.

Stuart Kermode, is one of the main antagonists in A Captive State, he was the high ranking FBI agent who was the head of the investigation against the alien invasion of Chicago. Jordan Brenda portrays FBI agent Stuart Kermode.

Staff Sergeant Alan Rittenhouse is one of the supporting characters in A Captive State, he was the CEO of Rittenhouse Corporation, a newly formed private military contractor that is helped to end the alien invasion and anarchism over Chicago. Rittenhouse was previously serving with the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division. After the end of the Persian Gulf War, Rittenhouse was betrayed and banished by his former mentor Colonel Charles Levitt and his men, after he wrongly accused of killing many innocent people during the Persian Gulf War. Darius Rolince plays the role of Alan Rittenhouse.

Joseph Mulligan aka The Illusive Man, is one of the main characters of the story. He was only one to protect their people of Chicago from the alien invasion. He was one of the main antagonists in A Captive State, alongside Colonel Charles Levitt of the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division. Quinten Hyde portrayed the illusive man. Hyde cites Liquid Snake/Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid: Guns of The Patriots as one of many stylistic influences of his character in A Captive State.

Development

In December 2016, four months leading to the development of To The Extinction, Square Enix and WB Games began to develop the video game adapation of Tom Hoffman's Beneath a Captive State. In February 2017, Annapurna Interactive won their development rights for A Captive State and To The Extinction. By that month, Annapuna Interactive had reportedly stealing over $500,000 during the development of A Captive State.

In June 2017, Square Enix and Annapurna Interactive unveils the 60 second teaser trailer of A Captive State, following the gameplay reveal of To The Extinction at E3 2017.

By May 2018, Square Enix released their first official trailer of A Captive State and ensured its first gameplay footage at E3 2018. The trailer features Killing Joke's "Pandemonium". The first gameplay footage shows the raid in Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center, while one of the many playable characters, Brian "Jurgis" McPhee, attempts to escape the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center alongside his friends Rafe and Frank. The gameplay footage received widespread attention, but the mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, said A Captive State depicts the city of Chicago in a war between the alien race and the US military, FBI and the Chicago Police Department. The game is yet to be banned in Chicago, due to the depiction of its city torn apart in the brink of an alien invasion, but the US military, FBI and the Chicago Police Department are also depicted as the major antagonists. Kody Theo, Vic Kamanga, EJ Wilkes, and Jared McKenna, who played Rula, Rafe, Gabe, and Jurgis in A Captive State, said the game was look similarly with Grand Theft Auto 5, Fallout 4, Red Dead Redemption 2, and InFamous: Second Son. "Because the story took place in the landlocked North American city of Chicago, A Captive State will feature the US Marine Corps and not feature the US Navy, but only the US Coast Guard remained appear in Lake Michigan. ", producer Megan Ellison explained. On 5 November 2018, three storyline DLCs for A Captive State had yet to be released; The Brothers Conway, The Tale of Jurgis, and I Am Rula. On 10 November 2018, ahead of the Veteran's Day, the fourth and final DLC would proved to be The Beginning of an End, the first part (takes place between 1989-1991) tells about Colonel Charles Levitt's betrayal of his fellow soldier named Sergeant Alan Rittenhouse, but the second and final part (takes place between 1986-1988) tells about FBI Agent Stuart Kermode's investigation after the alien invasion assisted by the Chicago PD officers. "Aside from the White Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos, lots of many several pedestrians and NPCs around Chicago, mainly foreigners from South Asia, East Asia, Scandinavia (excluding Finland), and Eastern Europe.", developer Square Enix explains. A Captive State is yet to be permanently banned in Chicago metropolitan area, with many retailers such as GameStop, Best-Buy and Walmart are decided to not release A Captive State in every cities and towns in Chicago metropolitan area. The game is yet to be rated M by ESRB and 18 by PEGI, due to the depictions of violence and obscenity.

Music and soundtrack

In May 2017, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross began to making the original score of A Captive State, but it contains many elements of the late 1980s to early 1990s electronic music. Most of the radio stations in A Captive State had many lore friendly and licensed songs from the 1970s through the 1990s, supported more than 500 songs available. The soundtrack also features many bands and musicians from the 1980s and the 1990s, such as Killing Joke, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Korn, Ministry, Godflesh, Pitchshifter, Prong, Machine Head, Anthrax, Biohazard, Fear Factory, Annihilator, Voivod, Black Flag, Husker Dü, Dinosaur Jr, Neurosis, Rollins Band, Fugazi, Social Distortion, Madball, Quicksand, Helmet, Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, and many more. Besides that, it also features many hip-hop artists of the late 1980s to the 1990s, most notably NWA, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Dr Dre, Wu-Tang Clan, and Beastie Boys. Nonetheless, it also features many electronic music artists from the 1990s, most notably Autechre, Aphex Twin, Cabaret Voltaire, Orbital, Underworld, Massive Attack, The Prodigy, Meat Beat Manifesto, Drexciya, Cybotron, and 808 State. "There is no black metal and death metal bands on Chicago Hardcore", developer Square Enix explains.
