In 2022, Motley Crue's guitarist and co-founder Mick Mars announced his retirement from touring due to health issues. Then there was trash-talking in the press, Mars claiming he was forced into retirement, and lawsuits over royalties. I bring this up because after the animosity in the press, Mars announced his first solo album The Other Side of Mars, which drops this week from Mars' own label 1313. Whatever your opinion is of who is telling the truth or not, there's no denying that Mars has always been a secret weapon. In a band filled with loud "hey-look-at-me" personalities like Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx, Mars was the quiet older guy onstage focused on blues-based metal. This is the guy who co-wrote "Girls, Girls, Girls", "Dr. Feelgood", and "Hooligan's Holiday" and the news of his solo album got my attention.
album cover
Bursting out the L.A. metal scene in the early 80s, Motley Crue were pretty much the house band for 80s metal. They were loud, over the top, and they had the hair and costumes to prove it! As a kid, I got into them when their cover of "Smokin' in the Boys Room" was released and that lead to me getting the cassette tape of Theatre of Pain. When I was 11 at TV Camp, me and my friend even did a music video of "Girls, Girls, Girls" with me on guitar. By the time the Crue played the Moscow Music Peace Festival and Dr. Feelgood came out, they were one of my favorite bands as a teen. Sometime after the Decade of Decadence compilation I had moved away from their hair metal sound, but I always had a soft spot for the Crue's rocking hits. Over the years, there's been lineup changes and in-fighting, but the classic line-up was always anchored by Mars.
Mars in 1986
At age 72, Mars is just now releasing his own solo album. His collaborators include singer Jacob Bunton, drummer Ray Luzier of Korn, keyboardist Paul Taylor of Winger. I went into this album with an open mind, even though I hadn't really dug much of the Crue's work since the 90s. I wanted to like this and be able to say Mars showed his old bandmates what he could do without them...but I was disappointed. Mars is a truly talented guitarist, but this felt like a run-of-the-mill metal album by the likes of Type O Negative or Disturbed. Back in the early 90s, the Crue fired singer Vince Neil and he quickly began a solo career, which wasn't as good as you'd expect (I saw him open for Van Halen in 1993). Maybe Neil was rushing into a solo career or maybe the Crue were just better together. Seems like a familiar feeling now with Mars.
ace currently has 3 studio albums, a cover album (which she released with nikki), 2 EPs and 2 singles.
her debut single, fearturing her song "The Scottish Play", was released in 1983
that same song is later seen on her first EP, Royal Flush, which came out in 1984
in 1986, ace released her first album, Brainless, which managed to bring her music further than the niche outside-mainstream enthusiasts and towards more people with nothing else to listen to on the radio (and eventually brought more people's attention to her music)
ace went completely quiet in 1991, following the death of her friend and drummer, mary dimes. she later made a comeback in 1993 with the album Back For Brains.
later in 1994, she would release her second EP containing her only released songs that weren't comedy based. these were made up of two unreleased songs that she had written during her break, and two songs that mary had half-written which ace later picked up on.
ace released what seemed like her last album at the time, The Ace Of Spades, in 1995. after doing shows for that album, she settled down again. she could still be seen performing with nikki and jack live, as well as performing with her other band The Suits. she also had a few performances here and there for her own music, either for charity events or festivals. however, she did not release any new music until 2022.
however, she randomly came back in 2020 during the lockdown, uploading videos of her and nikki covering songs to youtube. these covers were later put into one album and released under both nikki and ace's names.
her most recent work is her single "Miss Me?", released in 2022. following the single's release, ace teased and later promised more works from her eventually.

Rock band NEW YEARS DAY has released a new single, "Vampyre". A ferocious and haunting track — just in time for the scariest time of the year — "Vampyre" serves as a follow-up to last year's "Hurts Like Hell".
NEW YEARS DAY vocalist Ash Costello comments: "'Vampyre' is a song for anyone who has battled or is battling a malignant narcissist, which, essentially, is a certain kind of person who tries to suck the life out of you. Since I have personally experienced living with this type of monster, I wanted to write a song specifically for anyone else going through something similar in hopes it may help them discover some strength or help give them power to overcome it. So this is a song for anyone who has dealt with this type of person. It insists, 'You're not going to drain the life from me.'"
Fans can look forward to seeing the new song live this fall as new years day hits the road in the U.S. They'll be joining IN THIS MOMENT and ICE NINE KILLS on the "Kiss Of Death" tour, kicking off November 3 in Gary, Indiana. Additional stops include Kansas City, Milwaukee, Orlando, Atlanta, New York City, D.C., and more.
Kerrang! magazine counts NEW YEARS DAY among an elite handful of bands inspiring the next generation. Led by "the vibrant force of nature that is frontwoman Ash Costello," NEW YEARS DAY unleash anthems of discontent and empowerment, delivered with gothic flair and theatrical bombast. It's a sound that crashed into the Mainstream Rock Top 40 for the first time in 2019 with a Top 15 rock radio charting single "Shut Up" followed up by the cathartic "Hurts Like Hell", which finished 2022 as one of SiriusXM Octane's Top 25 songs of the year. Each successive victory is a celebration of hard-fought creative freedom, unstoppable determination, and dedicated fans. Throngs of diehards and newcomers alike sing and sweat along with NEW YEARS DAY, at festivals, in clubs or on tours with HALESTORM, FALLING IN REVERSE, MOTIONLESS IN WHITE, ICE NINE KILLS and IN THIS MOMENT.
NEW YEARS DAY is:
Ash Costello - Vocals
Nikki Misery - Lead Guitar
Jeremy Valentyne - Guitar
Brandon Wolfe - Bass
Trixx - Drums
