2024 Golden Globe Awards | Los Angeles, CA | January 7, 2024
Gucci gown
Let it be known my Roman Empire is painted a shade of aurora borealis green.
I’m biased. I love it. You’re buckling up for a rave. But everyone knew that, right?
I want it on record that no one should be surprised when they see this lewk on the TSS Favourite Outfits of 2024 list. And that I’ll devise some maniacal strategy to make it make sense to include in every annual list from here to eternity.
Let's get the obvious out of the way in that this shade of green could easily be interpreted as very snakelike and thus a nod to reputation and its forthcoming re-recorded version. I'd even happily apply it to the teal-y and springlike green of debut if we want to go debutation on this.
But if we are to talk about Gucci we have to talk about the precipice the house is upon right now. As it relates to Taylor, I suspect her dress (specific shade TBD - Chartreuse? Apple? Pear? Some other adjacent fruit that’s a feast for my eyes?) is a preview of Fall 2024 and a clear indicator of the path the new creative director Sabato De Sarno’s will take the brand in. Which is to say, muting the eccentricity of Alessandro Michele’s era of Gucci that brought the brand to a new level of renown in favour of something cleaner and sexier. Nicole Phelps for Vogue already noted that De Sarno’s first collection for Gucci — Spring 2024’s Ancora, meaning ‘again’ in English and released in September — evokes a Gucci when Tom Ford was once at the helm, praising De Sarno’s approach to “the upfront sex appeal of those ’60s-by-way-of-the-’90s shapes, and straight riffs on Ford hits” while “establish[ing De Sarno’s] essentials, focusing on cut and proportion, and repeating shapes for emphasis.”
Indeed, Taylor’s gown is directly reminiscent of a Fall 2004 look from Ford’s Gucci - all green sparkles and sexy disco energy. This makes sense when we consider De Sarno’s history and homeworking when he decided to take the creative director post. He told WWD, “Gucci to me equals luxury … the first fashion piece I ever owned was a Gucci jacket by Tom Ford. I still remember I traveled to Rome to buy it with my friend … luxury was really not part of our world. Television was the only way to see fashion for me back then.” He added, “My ambition is to build an aesthetic message with an edited collection that is mindful of Gucci’s heritage and close to my own aesthetics.”
When we consider my personal history with Taylor and Gucci, I don’t have to look very far to immediately picture one of my all time favourite Taylor looks — the 2014 Grammys when she wore a sparkling Gucci Première column gown which is not too dissimilar to this one. What can I say, I’m consistent. The shape, the perfect kiss-the-floor hemming, and obviously the divine colour that really pops on Taylor will have me swooning for a long time.
At the end of it all, what I come back to is De Sarno’s sentimentality to naming his first collection: Ancora. Again. He told WWD, “Ancora is a word that you use when your desire is not over yet … I want to fall in love with fashion all over again — ancora.” In the same interview he said, “I like words a lot, they have weight and a precise meaning, they convey emotions, so I like artists who use words.”
It dawns on me that Taylor’s light is shining at its brightest now as she highlights, celebrates, and - indeed - falls in love with all the versions of herself she has ever been. Revisiting her eras past again. And again. In every re-record. In every step she takes on stage. In every cutting line she writes in ruminating and revisiting the experiences of her life and translating them into song. She’s flitting, flirting, memorializing all her past selves in celebration of their summation of her current self. And that’s what this ‘era of eras’ has been.
So if this is De Sarno’s Gucci I say welcome. Ancora.

happy saturday! this is for mary @spacegirlsgang as always because i was thinking about Them again
The thing is, Nicolò stops thinking about it.
He doesn't mean to say it at first – Andromache doesn't believe him, the first time she overhears and he has to explain just to escape the inevitable teasing – but it slips out anyway, on a quiet evening when they're both on watch, Andromache already long asleep, which is a rare occasion indeed. He tells Yusuf to get some rest, more for show than anything else, because Yusuf shakes his head as he has done for the past few nights. "In case you fall asleep," is his normal excuse, and he's always smiling as he says it. It's not a risk in the slightest, but Yusuf doesn't seem to care, and Nicolò will not refuse the company.
(He's not as comfortable alone anymore than he used to be. He hasn't had time to really think about that yet.)
So it is evening, and Nicolò is poking at the fire in an attempt to revive it somewhat while Yusuf is mid-tale, voice hushed to avoid waking Andromache but waving his hands animatedly as he talks. It might have infuriated Nicolò when they first met, how Yusuf never quite seemed to be still, but it's rapidly become one of the things he likes most about him.
(That's another thing he hasn't had time to think properly about since Helm's Deep, but has been haunting him anyway: Yusuf's eyes, exhausted but still gentle, as he offered to help with Nicolò's braid; the way he'd smiled brighter than the sunrise when the elves had arrived from the east, Quynh among them; the way he'd persuaded Nicolò to join in the celebrations afterward. And then, the thing that plagues him the most: the way he sang, both soft and solemn for those they'd lost and joyful and loud later on, everyone's eyes on him, the most beautiful thing in the room.)
It's because of all this that when Yusuf asks him about the flow of a line in the song he's taken it upon himself to compose in commemoration of the battle, he answers: "I could not say, elenya. I have never been particularly musical."
He realises what he's said only after he says it. Yusuf almost certainly notices, but he doesn't say anything about it, sparing Nicolò's heart for now. Instead, he leans back on his elbows, and the movement draws attention to the way his curls fall across his face, the way the firelight turns him to gold. "I don't know about that," Yusuf says. "You grew up in Rivendell, you must have learned a thing or two."
"If that were true," Nicolò says, "perhaps Andromache would have learned to carry a tune. Alas."
Yusuf laughs, golden, and Nicolò is – Nicolò is hopeless. "You're lucky she's asleep."
The topic of conversation turns after that, and it is, largely, forgotten.
The worst of it is that it doesn't end there. It's just so easy to slip it into conversation, warm and familiar like they've known each other for years, elenya, star. It suits him, Nicolò thinks, even if he is perhaps a bit biased: a bright point of light amid so much darkness.
He never admits this to Andromache, even when she overhears and gives him a sidelong look but blessedly doesn't say anything in front of Yusuf. She would say he's being insufferably poetic; Nicolò would argue the time with Yusuf is a bad influence.
So it becomes a reflex, and he doesn't think about it. Until after everything, after they are all reunited and safe (and they survive, all of them, even Nile and Lykon, carried back down into the city by the Eagles, still enough that Nicolò had thought they were dead at first until Nile had coughed and he'd been light with relief), and he and Yusuf finally have the time to figure out this thing between them.
It is – Nicolò does not have the words to describe it. He only knows he has never felt this much before.
They're in the courtyard when it comes up. It's late, and the night is clear, clear enough that there are more stars than Nicolò could ever hope to count. Yusuf is lying beside him, his head resting lightly on Nicolò's shoulder, quiet enough that he could be asleep, but Nicolò knows he isn't.
(He'd thought Yusuf was never still before, but just didn't see it: now Yusuf is comfortable enough with him to let himself rest properly, and Nicolò still marvels at that a little.)
Just when Nicolò is starting to think Yusuf may have actually fallen asleep, he speaks. "Thatr. That's one you don't know."
Nicolò repeats it to himself, then asks, "What does it mean?" They've been teaching each other bits and pieces of their respective languages for a while now, first as a way to pass time on the road, but now it's a habit.
"Star," Yusuf says, then tilts his head to look at Nicolò expectantly. The stars are reflected in his eyes.
"Elen," Nicolò responds. He doesn't think it through until Yusuf props himself up on one elbow, his brow furrowing in thought.
"Elen," he echoes, and only then does Nicolò realise, but he cannot take it back now. "But that sounds like – what's the word–"
"Elenya," Nicolò says, and there is really no reason for him to steer clear of telling Yusuf what it really means, now that Yusuf knows exactly how Nicolò feels, but. Well.
"Nicolò," Yusuf says. Nicolò doesn't look at him, but Yusuf's voice is soft when he asks, "What does it mean?"
"Translated literally," Nicolò says, "it can mean star, or my star for some, I think, but it is not – there is more to it than that, I cannot–"
When Nicolò finally looks at him there is something like wonder in his eyes. "All this time?" Yusuf asks.
"All this time," Nicolò replies. "What did you think it meant?"
"I don't know, something like – idiot, or–" Yusuf makes an exasperated sound, and Nicolò can't help smiling, which only makes Yusuf roll his eyes. "Don't look at me like that, it's not that far-fetched. I still thought you didn't like me. Why?"
"It made sense," Nicolò says simply. "Even when things were impossibly dark, you were there."
Yusuf just looks at him for a long moment, silent, eyes shining. "Nicolò," he says again, and then kisses him, and then neither of them speak for some time after that.
When they do part, finally, Yusuf lies back down and curls close to Nicolò's side. "And you call me the poetic one. Honestly."
"It's true," Nicolò insists, because he can't hold a candle to Yusuf's way with words. Yusuf just shakes his head, and for a while they're still.
"You know," Yusuf says, "when Andromache and Quynh find this out, they'll never let you hear the end of it, amrâlimê."
He'll ask Yusuf what that means tomorrow. "I know." They've been teasing him about it since the first time Andromache overheard him, and then since she told Quynh. But he loves them anyway, so it's all just as well.

The Summer I Turned Pretty
Interrupting your OBX regular to talk about TSITP. Some light to medium spoilers about to follow.
I need people to talk about this series with because when I say this is the first series that made me fall in love with reading at the tender age of 14, just over a decade ago I mean it. The excitement I’ve been holding in, in anticipation for this series far outweighs any other and now that I’ve binged the show from 9am to 2am I have THOUGHTS.
- First of all, I loved it. Book to tv/movie adaptations are always a risk and almost never a comparison but with Jenny Han actively at the helm this series felt safe and it was - there were changes but mostly they felt for the better and the parts that I preferred in the book even felt understandable in the series.
- The casting! Amazing. 10/10. Admittedly I was apprehensive over the Conrad casting initially but a few teasers/trailers in and I was sold, Chris Briney does the broody/longing/lost so so well. Jeremiah’s casting took the longest and it shows because Gavin Casalegno IS Jeremiah, the perfect golden boy/sunshine kid. Lola Tung is radiant, this is Belly’s series and she is the main character is all the ways. Susannah/Laurel/Steven/Cam/Shayla, all just so wonderful I really couldn’t fault this cast.
- Unpopular decision I know but I have been a Jeremiah girl ever since I read It’s Not Summer Without You, Chapter 8 and I have stood by that decision to this day, ignoring book 3 because my Jeremiah would never. Howeverrrr, dare I say I have been converted Team Conrad? 🫣 The chemistry between this cast is just insane and all throughout the show I found myself flip flopping over who I was rooting for, I am still processing my ship thoughts but whilst I’ll always always have a special spot for Team Jellyfish that last scene with Conrad and Belly at the beach was just 😩 *chefs kiss*.
-But ummmm for all the absolute HATE that Jeremiah Fisher gets in book 3 over what happed when they were on a break why you gotta make Belly be actively kissing both brothers mere hours apart from each other? Like I loved it but also I hated it because now I’m going to have to watch that golden retriever get his heart absolutely smashed when Belly initially picks Conrad over him next season (assuming of course) I think I preferred the books where Belly wasn’t making out with Jeremiah and giving him false hope before driving off into the sunset with his brother.
- Taylor! I absolutely loved all the Swifty (and Olivia) songs and that in itself could (and possibly will be) it’s own post but I want to actually take a moment to acknowledge Rain Spencer’s Taylor. I actively chose not to re read TSITP before the series came out in order to be able to fully appreciate both mediums but I feel like from memory Taylor, at least in book 1 was not my fave. In the series however, I absolutely adored her. Whilst she fucks up a little bit I feel like Taylor is a true ride or die and her character is very reflective of a 16 year old growing up with insecurities and desires and I for one fucked with the way she didn’t fuck with Conrad. Because she didn’t see Conrad in the way viewers did, she saw him as someone who’d played with her besties heart and I absolutely would have been the same if I was her.
- Speaking of relationships I loved to see - Susannah and Laurel finally got their moment to shine and I loved loved loved them. There’s not much to say here because imo they were just the best. Also I really liked Shayla and Steven, Claire Cho who?
- Cam Cameron I love you.
- Redsox girl! Nicole was great, we stan female friendships and women who know their worth. I much preferred this version of them the one in the books, even if the clothes stealing thing did leave me feeling all the rage towards the deb girls.
- Cleveland Castile was okay. I liked having someone that Conrad could confide in and escape too but like I would have preferred to see more of the Conrad/Laurel relationship? Hell I think I would have preferred to see the dynamic between Conrad and John than introducing someone new. Speaking of parent/children relationships I wish we got more Susannah and Belly, they didn’t feel as close in the series as I had imagined they might and that was slightly disappointing.
- Adam sucked. John was fine, I liked him even. John and Laurel seem like soulmates on some level, whether that be as deeply connected friends or more, I’d be interested to explore this relationship in future seasons. Obviously the true soulmates are Susannah and Laurel, I just loved that John knew that and loved Susannah too.
- The infinity necklace being in this book was an interesting choice. I’m not mad about it but it will be interesting to see how this progresses the future story. Also did Susannah agree to doing the trials in the book? I’m due a re read but for some reason I feel like she didn’t? Either way I feel like we all know what’s going to happen if they intend on following along with the books in any way, which is *cue the Vanessa Hudgens clip* terrible but like inevitable? I cried in episode 7 heaven forbid anything heavier.
- The one thing that made me cringe was a few of the camera shots e.g. the weird flashback transitions and the binoculars scene 🤭 someone tell me they found those as cringe as I did 😂
- Overall, I know I’m missing some things and I might come back later to add to this post but I really loved this series and I’m so so excited for a season two. Someone come talk to me about it!!

In a Garroth mood today
(notes but typed + elaborated on under the cut)
Notes by head:
Broke his nose twice
> literally just wiped the fuck out once with the helm on > Nicole punched him when she found out who he was/that he was the mother fucker she had to fake her death to avoid marrying after he already did that
Sad man
Freckles and more downturned eyes
> Zianna’s genes are strong 💪
Matching w/Zane <3
> Garte slashed his eye for speaking against him shortly before he began planning to flee O’Khasis (this had to do with Garte viewing Zane as weaker and therefore inferior to Garroth, which he vehemently disagreed with)
By the full body thing:
Pretty religious, more for comfort than anything else (turns to religion when he’s stressed/doesn’t know what to do. He gives up on the Divine eventually, but turns to the old gods instead of giving up on religion entirely)
By the tiny ones:
S1-early
S1-rest (after being unmasked/when he’s comfortable enough to go without it)
S2-just after he gets back
Long note next to that: > I’m going to talk more abt his betrayal (when I gather my thoughts) & Jo9 form soon but for now know that mentally it is NOT FUN. > He also gets a void burn on his back bc of the way Aaron used the Realm Breaker (+ a stab wound from him too lmao)
S3- I’m working on it, probably during Search Arc (this is a period early on in my potential S3 reworking starting almost right after Laurance disappears to the Nether, so there’s search parties and angst and whatnot. Garroth misses him <3)

WELL RECEIVED
Everyone from yesterday returned to Sports Camp today for an awesome time. They all arrive here every day with such excitement ready for the day. Pastor Joe is also very present here talking with parents that stick around. He's great! He and Ana are always checking in to see if we need anything and they've provided us with a few items and other things on short notice. We so appreciate them and I know this town does too!!
Tumblr media
Kiana taught the lesson today and it was about the first nine plagues that God brought on the Egyptians as Moses was asking Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. The lesson was about sticking with the game plan and following through with things even in the midst of resistance. Once again we had another gifted teacher at the helm today. Thanks a lot Kiana!!
We took it easy today between our two events. I've realized over the years that at least two or three of our days have to be rest days. Sports Camp and BARF Nights already take a ton of energy, we can't plan outings in between them everyday. Most of us took much needed naps or just sat around in the AC, playing games and hanging out.
Tumblr media
I was able to get in a two hour nap! And I came into the sanctuary and Nicole was reading Ellie a story! So sweeeeet.
Tumblr media
We also had lasagna for dinner!!
The weather wasn't too bad again today so we hung out a bit at the church for BARF Nights then we all walked to the school to use the field. We played Nuke 'Em at the church then Extreme Ultimate Kickball at the school field. It was a blast! We had one new guy with us tonight at BARF and he had an awesome time.
Tumblr media
Isaac shared his testimony tonight. It's hard to believe that this is his first Youth Mission Venture, and his first time sharing at a BARF Night. Isaac has been on a few Intergenerational Mission Ventures and in many ways is already a veteran. I think those experiences have really shaped him. He told everyone that he knows that God is continually there and pulling his heart towards Him. He also recognized that sometimes he gets pulled in the other direction. Now that something that all of can relate to, right??
Tumblr media
It was just a super honest testimony and Isaac was very bold in sharing it the way he did. I'm very excited to see how he continues to grow in Christ for the rest of his high school years and beyond!!
We found out that there are really only a couple youth in Elk Creek that haven't come to our events. That's a super great turnout!
We had a good family time tonight and included Pastor Joe's sons in it. They were able to give us some insight and their take on how things are going this week. It really seems like it's been a positive week all around and we're so happy about that. People are continually stopping by the church and dropping of items like cookies, cupcakes, brownies, popsicles, lemonade, iced tea.......the list goes on! We're definitely being treated like kings and queens!!
I want to close out this post by saying one more thing - Shout out to Marcus! He's a real one!!!

DEAR DAVID - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Lionsgate
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: “Shortly after comic artist Adam responds to Internet trolls, he begins experiencing sleep paralysis — while an empty rocking chair moves in the corner of his apartment. As he chronicles increasingly malevolent occurrences in a series of tweets, Adam begins to believe he is being haunted by the ghost of a dead child named David. Encouraged by his boss to continue the “Dear David” thread, Adam starts to lose his grip on what is online…and what is real. Based on the viral Twitter thread by BuzzFeed comic artist Adam Ellis.” -Press Release
REVIEW: Filmmaker John McPhail takes the helm on DEAR DAVID, a genre film inspired by the events behind the 2017 “Dear David” Twitter thread. Created by cartoonist Adam Ellis, who was working for BuzzFeed at the time, the film presents a complex character who, in dealing with this supernatural force, must deal with his own personal demons.
Remotely familiar with the “Dear David” Twitter story, the film sets up the premise of David being a child who is bullied online. Something transpires. As Adam digs into the story, David is presented with a murky disposition and may not be innocent. Adam is initially drawn in when David responds to one of his tweets and what ensues feels a bit like “The Ring.” What is interesting is Adam’s character arc. As he becomes consumed by this nightmare, certain traits surface that have his friends and love drawing away from him. One could easily believe his supernatural predicament might be an extension of his stressed-filled job, but the story builds the foundation of David’s story and it clearly becomes a menacing force in Adam’s life. The film opens on David’s story, but DEAR DAVID is the story of Adam Ellis and his struggles with real life and supernatural forces as he fights to take control of his life.
Actor Augustus Prew is a veteran actor who carries the weight of the narrative. He creates a charming character who begins to take on darker tones as the supernatural entity complicates his life. He manages to maintain a level of sympathy and never presents an unlikable character. His performance provides access to a wide audience and easily takes them along for the ride. Actor Cameron Nicoll plays David. It’s an effective performance, but I don’t feel he gets enough screen time to present a rounded character. We become aware that the character has a darkside, but it is not fully formed, or presented as pure evil as Samara in “The Ring.” Still, it is creepy enough to add a sense of dread to the character.
There is an element to the production values that left me feeling that the film was a made for tv project. That is not a bad thing when you consider the state of the art of made for tv movies. There is something fresh and stark to the look of the film. There is nice interplay between light, shadows and colors, and there is this grounded look to the city and locations. The film captures many exteriors that clearly make this a New York Story and I believed it. McPhail creates a tone and atmosphere to the film similar to that of “Anna & the Apocalypse.” There are horror elements and keeps the film grounded. There are these extraordinary, supernatural elements, but they exist parallel to “reality.” Adam has entered David’s nightmare but he still moves through daily life. The special and visual effects are subtle touches, and this is not a gory film, relying on more traditional scares. Composers Tommy Reilly & Roddy Hart’s score nicely accentuates those moments adding another level to the atmosphere and playing on the viewer’s expectations.
DEAR DAVID is an interesting and engaging take on the story behind the events of 2017. What easily could have been a typical genre film looking to inspire a franchise, John McPhail delivers a character driven tale that presents a story arc that is influenced by the supernatural elements. It is not as in depth character study as any of the films based on Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting,” but McPhail’s film has more in common with that type of cinematic thriller. It’s great to see him still working in the genre and I look forward to some of his other potential forthcoming films.

"No better way to seek out knowledge that to take helm of your journey." There is a rhythmic thump of his finger against his temple. Hamza took a moment to make sure things were set for the voyage. "Maybe we can "borrow" some resources from some unsuspecting pirates. Hey. We need those resources more than they do. To fund our own adventure so you can see what you have been missing out!" There is a mischievous glint to him as he places a hand on her shoulder. "Maybe can snag you some of them books you like diving your nose into." A tease but an amusing one for him. These blowhards wouldn't know a good book if it bit them. (Hamza!!)
                                             -- @amalanexus
Tumblr media
Before set out, Nicole had been doing a small inventory of the stuff needed. Double, triple, quadruple checking everything to make sure nothing was lost or forgotten. Sure enough the tough as nails pirate she managed to befriend is actually dragging her out to the seas for adventure and knowledge as he puts it. And in all honesty...she's excited! Of course she's nervous as ever, going out to sea always made her anxious and that never seemed to dissipate until she had reached land.
Of course...Nicole was not going to be part of the 'negotiations' that took place when it came to Hamza and the others 'borrowing' from other pirates. Sometimes, a person like her can be awfully distracting to others and often a hinderance when negotiations go south.
The thought of more things to read to occupy herself was definitely a go to for her. Hamza knew how to bribe her into most things. Either books or sweets were definitely a way to get the girl to agree to most things. Besides, it wasn't like she was freeloading either. Hamza could make plenty of use for her actual negotiation skills, and general knowledge.
While he and his crew were plenty intelligent in their own ways and of their own merit, she brings forth new ideas, and alternatives for things they usually would have just discarded. Such as how to eat a poisonous fish safely. Or how to use tattered and torn ropes for other general uses like traps and such.
Neither she nor Hamza would ever admit it, but the two had met long before their 'first meeting' back in the city. They both had come from an orphanage of the same town, and she remembered him vaguely. Always getting into trouble and just one day, disappearing. In all honesty, she would have never guessed pirate, she simply assumed he got lucky and got adopted. As for her, she left on her own accord one day and began her own pursuit of knowledge. It was a means for her to ensure she could survive and fend for herself the best she can without having to rely on anyone. So while on polar opposites of the personality spectrum, there was an underlying foundation that gave both of them a solid ground to stand on.
It gave them both an understanding of why they do things the way they do, even if they don't fully understand it.
At the very least, neither of them ever had to question if the other had their back. Hamza had only remembered her for a short while, but proved more loyal to her in that small bit of time more than people she should have called 'friends' in years. For all that he was, he was someone she felt he was someone she'd always be able to count on. If he said he was going to do it, he did it. And he seemed excited to bring her along with his crew anyway.
Tumblr media
"--I did pick up some new recipes an' traps while in town too. Also managed ta send note ta a 'friend' ta make sure we ain' gonna have no issues leavin'." In other words, she used a small lie to get local law enforcements to be far away from the habor when they planned to leave.
