IMPORTANT!!! “This is probably one of the most important posts we will do. Please spread the word! Every year rehabbers receive orphans that they are unable to save simply because the finder fed the animal while they had it. Seems crazy right? How could feeding an animal hurt it? This is how: Many orphans are found with hypothermia (low body temperature) and extreme dehydration. When an animal is in this state, it CAN NOT digest anything. Its body simply can not process food. If offered food in this state, the animal will most likely die. Also, there are very specific formulas that wildlife rehabbers use for each particular species of animal. Offering the orphan the wrong kind of formula can cause extreme discomfort, diarrhea and even death. If you have found a baby that you know to be orphaned, please place it in a warm, dark and quiet place and contact your local wildlife rehabilitator for further instruction and assistance.
Thank you so much for caring about our local wildlife.”

SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT FISHERS! Post credited to Newhouse Wildlife Rescue! Saw it circulating around facebook and wanted to post it here for you all to see! I did not write this article, I am simply circulating it for you all to learn something new, cause I sure did! Wanted to add that these lil buggers like to go into chicken coops as well!
There is so much misinformation floating around about these guys, so we thought we would set the record straight!
Fishers belong to the weasel family. Technically, they are just called “Fishers” not “Fisher cats”. They are amazing hunters equipped with large paws, sharp claws and an impressive set of teeth.
They don’t get very large. Males tend to be between 8-16 pounds. Females are significantly smaller, weighing only 4-6 pounds. The largest fisher ever recorded weighed 20 lbs.
Many people will tell you they have blood curdling screams but, more likely than not, what they are hearing are foxes. Fishers are generally very quiet and, when they are vocal, it’s not quite as intense as the sounds foxes make.
We are often warned that they eat people’s cats. A study done in New Hampshire in 1979 tested the stomach contents of 1000 fishers. Only one tested positive for cat hair. Similar studies were done in New York and Massachusetts as well. Both of those studies did not find any trace of cats. That’s not to say they will not prey on cats. They certainly can but it’s not as common as many would think. Considering outdoor domestic cats have contributed to the extinction of over 60 songbird species, as well as some mammals and reptiles, the real concern when letting a cat outside should be the damage the cat will do to the wildlife - not the other way around. Cats are not indigenous to this area. What they do to our wildlife is not what nature intended.
Fishers are one of the only predators that hunt porcupines. They have developed techniques to avoid the quills. Though we LOVE porcupines here at the rescue, we respect Mother Nature and understand that every creature does what is necessary to survive out there.
Fishers can be very aggressive but attacks on humans are VERY RARE and generally only when provoked.
Fishers are hunted for their pelts (fur). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fishers were virtually eliminated from the United States due to over trapping and deforestation. Restrictions helped their numbers to bounce back.
It’s uncommon to see one. They are elusive creatures. Though sometimes they are out during the day, they are mostly active at dawn and dusk. Most of the pictures you will find online will show them looking very mean and aggressive. These photos obviously get lots of attention. Though, these guys can certainly be aggressive at times, there is a lot more to them.

Community Rallies To Support Newhouse Wildlife Rescue
CHELMSFORD, MA — A Chelmsford non-profit animal rescue that cares for tiny baby animals for free at its facility asked the community for help replacing three of its five incubators and may get to replace all five, thanks to quick response from community members.

“Baby beavers live in a den with mom, dad and last year’s siblings. The entire family works together as a unit caring for the new babies. Even siblings will bring back food for the new little ones to eat. This four week old beaver expects to be waited on hand and foot as that is what he was used to at home.
Thank goodness there are multiple people working at the rescue. Nibi seems to think he is the only orphan here and all time must be spent doting on him. I see why it takes a whole family of beavers to meet their needs.
But honesty, who could refuse this face?”

I called her at my wits end.
“He won’t eat. I keep trying and he will only take a few drops at a time.”
Angel is a rehabilitator in another state that specializes in beavers. I have never rehabilitated one this young, so I needed guidance.
She laughed.
“It has to be on his terms. He can’t think it’s your idea.” She said.
It seemed a bit crazy to me that a baby beaver would literally refuse to eat if the feeding wasn’t on his terms. Then again, Angel has never steered me wrong before. She gave me some pointers and I immediately picked up the 1lb baby beaver and attempted to try her tips.
I sat down with Nibi and showed him the bottle.
He grunted at it and walked away. Instead of pushing it, I didn’t move. He seemed a bit surprised. Usually, I would pick him up and keep putting the bottle in his face to urge him to try.
He slowly turned around and walked over to the bottle again - only to snub his nose at it and walk away disgruntled (which was hilarious to watch by the way).
Again, I stood firm as recommended.
He turned around once more and stared at me.
He slowly approached the bottle again. Once convinced that this was, in fact his idea, he placed his paws around the nipple and guzzled it down….
I have a officially been put in my place.

“While driving, we all watch out for animals that might be crossing the road but no one ever tells you to watch out for ones falling from the sky…
That’s exactly what happened with this eastern cottontail. She was picked up by a hawk and mid flight, the bird of prey lost control of her and dropped her right in front of a moving car. Talk about having a bad day!
The people driving the car saw her fall and brought her directly to Adey Wildlife, where she received care for her wounds. Joanne Adey noticed this particular rabbit was producing milk.
There was no way to find out where she came from and bring her back to whatever nest she may have. The bird could have carried her for miles. But Joanne had eight baby bunnies with no mother and thought maybe this mama cottontail would be willing to care for them.
Despite all this mama had been through, she readily adopted these eight tiny orphans. The rehabilitators at Adey Wildlife Rehabilitation are true miracle workers. They took a really bad situation and turned it into something beautiful.
We just had to give them some credit. This was a truly amazing rescue.”
