July 10, 2019 | Around 300 people living in the isolated Xeni Gwet'in First Nation, one of six communities that form the local Tŝilhqot'in Nation, have been entirely cut off in the Nemaiah Valley because the three main roads that allow access have been chewed up and washed away.
"I haven't seen that river that full," said Joe Alphonse, tribal chair with the Tŝilhqot'in National Government.
The rain started pelting the region late last week. The province's River Forecast Centre started monitoring water levels on Friday, but an official flood warning wasn't issued until Sunday.

Residents say they were already frantic by then, dealing with flooding that came as a surprise on Saturday.
Ranches were turned to swamps and backyards were dotted with their own miniature lakes. Locals started to phone officials in a panic for help, but they say none came for days.
"People phoned on Sunday. The call [was] finally returned at eight on Monday morning and even then, nobody shows up," Randy Saugstad, a rancher in Big Creek, said Tuesday.
"We cannot seem to get any interest from the government."

FONV Meeting Jack Woodward
When the Friend’s of Nemaiah became aware of imminent Ministry of Forests plans to issue new cutting permits in the Brittany Triangle that would result in some of the largest clear cuts in the province in this pristine wilderness, home to grizzly bears, wolves, moose and wild horses who had roamed there for over two hundred years they met with Chief Roger William of the Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government and their lawyer, Jack Woodward, to get details of the ongoing case for rights and title. It soon became obvious to them that the people of Xeni, through an inspired leadership, and under the guidance of wise elders, were the strongest defenders we could hope to meet of the land and its wild inhabitants.

Wanna Help the Friend’s of Nemaiah
You can help by writing your B.C. MLA, ministers of the provincial government, and the premier. It is also good to write to federal MPs and ministers. Dont hesitate to write, call or arrange a meeting with any politician. The courts are being called upon to make vital decisions re aboriginal title over the lands of the ?Elegesi Qiyus Wild Horse Preserve, but politicians have the power to save the wild horses and their habitat independent of that.
They need to be convinced of the importance of this issue and that a treasured part of the heritage of all Canadians is at risk. A nationally recognized Wild Horse Sanctuary can be a win win for everybody; for First Nations people, for the citizens of British Columbia and Canada, and most of all for the wild herds of the Tsilhqotin. Of course, donations to Friends of the Nemaiah in support of the research and stewardship programmes we undertake are always welcome, too!

Foundation of the Friends of Nemaiah
Friends of the Nemaiah Valley (FONV) was registered as a not-for-profit society under the B.C. Societies Act in December, 2000.
It was preceded by a similar society called Friends of Nemiah Valley in the late 1980’s. The earlier society was formed to assist the Xeni Gwet’in First Nations to gain control of their traditional territory in response to plans by the BC Ministry of Forests to issue cutting permits in the Brittany Triangle. O
ne response to this threat was the issuance of the Aboriginal Wilderness Preserve Declaration on August 23, 1989.
FONV is represented by the Xeni Gwet’in First Nations lawyer Jack Woodward

Friend of Nemaiah Mission Statement
We recognize that human activities are most often destructive to the environment when they involve the use of machines to carry out large-scale operations of resource extraction. We therefore resist mechanized resource extraction on an industrial scale. We encourage minimally mechanized, small-scale resource use by local populations with moderate trade in those resources, especially when it is carried on within a plan of sustainability.
We recognize the value of native cultures and their traditional relationship to the land, and we therefore support native title and native rights, especially as they concern the protection of the environment in the traditional territory of the native people.
With the help of out lawyer Jack Woodward and many others we have been able to fight and win legal battles.

The McCrory Report and its recommendations
The Friends of Nemaiah hired McCrory Wildlife Services to undertake a wildlife assessment of the Brittany Triangle. Prior to this, there had been no scientific inventory of this area. The Preliminary Wildlife Assessment of the Rainshadow Wild Horse Ecosystem was completed in the spring of 2002.
At a meeting and banquet in the Nemiah Valley Band Office, June 6, 2002, we presented the McCrory Report and its recommendations. Primary among these recommendations was that the Brittany Triangle become Canada’s first and only mainland wild horse preserve. The same day the Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government with the help of their lawyer Jack Woodward issued the “?Elegesi Qiyus Wild Horse Preserve” Declaration, thus making the entire Aboriginal Wilderness Preserve also a wild horse preserve.
