Episode 136 - Lady Problems, or Problem Ladies? Pataakha, Good Luck Jerry, and Darlings
We do our best to not feel the wrath of these women scorned as we check out three recent(ish) black comedies with female leads. Also lots of good music recommendations in this one.
Notes:
Black Comedy
That Mel Brooks quote was basically right: “Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.”
Pushing The Envelope: Being Cyrus and Delhi Belly, with Suchin Mehrotra
Not dependent on wordplay and puns, so might work better for people who don’t speak Hindi?
Pataakha
Everyone understands the Wario analogy
Radhika Madan
“Cows Around”, by Corn Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans
Maybe both Pataakha and Jojo’s were influenced by Sabai?
SPOILER ZONE: 24:21- 27:45
(INTERVAL (“Paracetamol” from Good Luck Jerry)
Good Luck Jerry
“Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine” by the White Stripes
Kolamaavu Kokila
Maybe the South Indian film fans were right?
Knockoff Pankaj Tripathi?
Comic book imagery as lazy storytelling
Remake Heartbreakers with Jahnvi Kapoor and Tabu, you cowards
Darlings
The Year of Shefali Shah
“Goodbye Earl” by the Chicks

Zara Hatke Zara Bachke movie review: Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan's love story alternates between humorous and boring
Tumblr media
What lengths would you go to acquire a dwelling? At what juncture would you set limits? The main dilemma in Zara Hatke Zara Bachke is one that resonates with millions of middle-class Indians. Ultimately, Kapil and Soumya, a young couple from Indore, are confronted with difficult decisions: can they follow through with their plans? Zara Hatke has all the makings of a sitcom from the start. Kapil, a yoga instructor, and Soumya, a tutor, have been married for two years and still have a lively relationship. However, they face space constraints in their home due to the presence of mummyji, daddyji, mamaji, mamiji, and their overly clever nephew, who constantly disrupts their intimate moments. Soumya believes that the only solution is to find a new home where they can have some privacy. However, the path to achieving this goal is not without obstacles, including a phony divorce that threatens to derail their plans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziK8HzNk04A Kapil and Soumya are prepared for a fun-filled evening, munching on oily street noodles, drinking a sparkling soda (Soumya teasingly calls Kapil a 'cheepda' for only ordering one, not two) and indulging in a Five Star chocolate bar (more branding!) while crooning a few forgettable tunes. They hear about a housing project for low-income families and decide to take their chances by engaging in shady activities. The movie doesn't fully capitalize on its humorous potential and suffers from a sudden shift in tone during its second half. This includes introducing a plot twist imbued with trite sentimentality and adding a dull conservative layer to the story. Additionally, the writing consistently falls flat despite the efforts of the actors, notably the lawyer who chews paan and provides the film's funniest moments. Meanwhile, Inaamulhaq plays the role of a swindling liar who preys on innocent people, and Sharib Hashmi portrays a kind-hearted chowkidar whose main wish (which is predictable) will undoubtedly be granted. Regarding Kaushal and Khan, the former excels in his frugal nature, while the latter requires greater diversity in expression. Despite both being compelled to apologize for their obsession with a house and nearly damaging their relationship, the film indicates that the woman bears more responsibility than the man. He strives to maintain harmony between his loving family, who value blood ties over Thums Up, and his self-centered wife. What is the review of Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023)?
Zara Hatke Zara Bachke Review {2.5/5} & Review Rating
ZARA HATKE ZARA BACHKE is the story of a couple that comes up with a novel idea to solve their woes. Kapil Dubey (Vicky Kaushal) is happily married to Somya Chawla Dubey (Sara Ali Khan) for two years. They reside with their parents Ved Prakash Dubey (Akash Khurana) and Mamta Dubey () in a house in Indore. For the last six months, Kapil's maternal uncle Purshottam Mama (Neeraj Sood) and aunt Deepa Mami (Kanupriya Shankar Pandit) have started residing at their place. Kapil and Somya are compelled to give up their bedroom to them. They don't have any privacy, as a result. Somya, hence, suggests to Kapil that they should have their own house. They start house hunting but soon realise that real estate prices are quite sky high. One day, Somya learns about Jan Awas Yojna, a government scheme that provides houses for cheaper rates. Kapil tries to apply for it but is told that he is not eligible for it as the scheme is only for economically weaker sections and those who don't have a pucca house of their own already. Bhagwandas (Inaamulhaq), an employee at the Jan Awas Yojna office, bumps into Kapil and he assures the latter that he can get him and Somya a house. He has a condition: Kapil and Somya will have to get divorced. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
Tumblr media
Raghav Ramadoss' cinematography is appropriate. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray's production design is realistic. Sheetal Iqbal Sharma's costumes suit the characters and their economic status. Manish Pradhan's editing is neat.
On the whole, though ZARA HATKE ZARA BACHKE suffers due to the poor writing, it also rests on funny and memorable scenes in the first half and a very relatable subject, especially from the urban perspective. At the box office, it can benefit if its target audience, that is the families, give the film a thumbs up.

This movies brings together a group of actors whom I've always enjoyed watching (Shreyas, Aftab, Vijay Raaz, Neeraj Sood), even if the some of the movies are headache-inducing bad (looking at you, Aftab in Red- The Dark Side, and Aftab in Mast, and Aftab in a guest appearance in Players, and Aftab in Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai and Aftab in Money Hai Toh Honey Hai and Aftab in Bin Bulaye Baraati and Aftab in Jaani Dushman). Of course, the problem with a movie like this is that you're always disappointed because your expectations are too high. So I sat on this one for a while before finally giving it a shot.
And, well, it was pretty good overall. Not the most crisp - it dragged a bit in a few scenes, what with Pavan Malhotra's last scene (maybe necessary to get his point across, but like, also sorta unnecessary) and the whole absurdity of bringing up the Aftab/Shreyas rivalry (apparently over love, at least partially?) and not doing anything with that information and a few others of the Bhaiyyaji scenes as well - but still, it was pretty entertaining to watch this cat-and-mouse game between the two overall. 'Based on true incidents,' maybe, and maybe that is why it was played out this way, but aside from the wordy showdown at the rooftop, not sure making Aftab and Shreyas old friends was even necessarily ... well, necessary.
Bollywood has, for whatever reason, a frequent tendency to make the evildoers the sympathetic heroes of the movies - and while this probably isn't as extreme as like the Shootout movies (on the other hand, it might actually be just as extreme when you consider that these people are getting careers they don't deserve and might honestly suck at), they yet again make Shreyas and his rag-tag group of guys the heroes while the honest, law-abiding (and always a step behind) officers are the ... well, not baddies/villains, but the people you do sorta root against. (And it's not often that they give you a whole set of law-abiding officers to root against - usually it is corrupt cops, or at least morally grey officers.)
Story-wise, though, it is entertaining to see them remain a step ahead. Especially as they approach that last test. It's so clear that he's got a second team in place, but the way the cops are so fixated on the original team is entertaining. Especially with the repeated "still eating food, sir" and eventually the "he's watching the play, so I am watching it too" bit. Like clearly they're being used as diversions, but it is all Aftab's team has to work with so they have to keep at it.
The girl at the end that gets caught - again, a bit much that she's like the officer's daughter and what-not: real, or just Bollywood's desire to make everyone in the movie interconnected to a fault, I'm not sure - but it was maybe a bit much for that. Crazier, though, is that she was clearly cheating and yet completely oblivious to the proctor being right around her. Like, maybe don't say anything when someone is right there? Get a question wrong here or there to throw them off, or at least just take a break and make it seem like you're reading, or anything. Gotta be aware.
The love stories, if you want to call them that, were both probably somewhat irrelevant - though the Shreyas/Ishita one at least played a bit of a role in the movie. The Aftab one was just ... I don't know. Extra filler, I guess - though with the movie approaching 2 hours in length, they could probably have done away with that too.
I do wish we'd get more of Shreyas. His movies are generally entertaining. And Vijay Raaz obviously doesn't have a huge role here, but he's pretty fun too when we do get to see him.
I'm sure there's a whole angle about the education system, and testing, and parental pressures, and cheating, and so much more, that could be explored - but as someone who has never gone through the education system there, I don't really have much to say about it. I mean, it probably sucks a ton for the students: those that are forced to go into things they don't want, for stature or money; those that can't make it into what they do like, for the same reasons; those that are pressured into cheating, because of insane expectations and abusive parents; and those that feel the need to pay insane amounts of money, just to have a shot at a dream.
Like so many other systems all over the world, this one is also very much broken and controlled by the greedy and ill-hearted; but as we see so well in the early stages of the second half of this movie, if someone isn't doing it, someone else will. There is, unfortunately, at this point in civilization, apparently, no way around that fact.
They way they play them at the end is amazing. Always just a slight step ahead, and perfectly so.

Los Angeles (April 20, 2020) - USC and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) today released preliminary results from a collaborative scientific study that suggests infections from the new coronavirus are far more widespread - and the fatality rate much lower - in L.A. County than previously thought. The results are from the first round of an ongoing study by USC researchers and Public Health officials. They will be conducting antibody testing over time on a series of representative samples of adults to determine the scope and spread of the pandemic across the county.
Based on results of the first round of testing, the research team estimates that approximately 4.1% of the county's adult population has antibody to the virus. Adjusting this estimate for statistical margin of error implies about 2.8% to 5.6% of the county's adult population has antibody to the virus- which translates to approximately 221,000 to 442,000 adults in the county who have had the infection. That estimate is 28 to 55 times higher than the 7,994 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported to the county by the time of the study in early April. The number of COVID-related deaths in the county has now surpassed 600.
"We haven't known the true extent of COVID-19 infections in our community because we have only tested people with symptoms, and the availability of tests has been limited," said lead investigator Neeraj Sood, a USC professor of public policy at USC Price School for Public Policy and senior fellow at USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics. "The estimates also suggest that we might have to recalibrate disease prediction models and rethink public health strategies."
