It has been a busy week so far on the national observances front for Down to Earth Markets. On Monday, multiple states, cities, schools and businesses–including our own company–recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day in honor and commemoration of Native American histories and cultures. And today, we salute and celebrate our hard-working farmers as October 12th is National Farmers Day here in the United States!
From a farming perspective, it’s a fitting coincidence that both these national observances are occurring within the same week this year. After all, Native Americans were the first to develop agriculture on the American continent around 7,000 years ago. While they were also hunter-gatherers, it’s been well-documented that numerous indigenous tribes, including the Mohawk in New York, were expert farmers who cultivated and grew a range of crops such as corn, beans, squash, tobacco, pumpkins and sunflowers. These staple foods featured heavily in traditional Mohawk recipes for cornbread, soups, and stews, which were cooked in clay vessels on stone hearths.
An enduring theme throughout the history of native people is their ability to live in harmony with nature and the land, which stands in stark contrast to the resource-intensive and polluting practices used by large, industrial farms in the western portions of the United States. In fact, many native tribes’ agricultural skills were so sophisticated that they can be credited for advancing practices that define the sustainable agriculture and land stewardship methods used by progressive farmers today. A variety of regenerative farming techniques were used by indigenous populations to enhance crop growth while protecting local ecosystems and preserving biodiversity:
Agroforestry: Intentionally integrating trees and shrubs into crop and animal farming systems to create environmental, economic, and social benefits.
Water management: Regulating the volume and frequency of irrigation applied to fields to meet crop needs while conserving water resources.
Permaculture: Synergetic farming systems based on crop diversity, resilience, natural productivity and sustainability.
Polycultures: The opposite of monoculture, polyculture is growing more than one crop species in the same space, at the same time, to mimic the diversity of natural ecosystems.
Intercropping: Planting synergistic crops together to complement and benefit each other.
One famous example of intercropping was cultivated extensively by the Iroquois and Cherokee through a combination of corn, beans, and squash known as the Three Sisters. Within this system, which is still used on small farms today, the corn stalks provide a natural support for the beans to wrap around and grow on. In turn the beans help the corn’s growth by adding nitrogen to the soil while the squash vines maintain soil moisture and prevent weeds from growing.
So, on National Farmers Day, as we recognize and honor the long hours and hard work put in by our dedicated farmers to bring fresh, nutritious food to our markets every week, we also pay tribute to the ancient agricultural heritage of native people who originally farmed the land. And, what more apropos way might there be to acknowledge those we have to thank for our bounty this weekend than by making some of these traditional Native American recipes with ingredients sourced from your Down to Earth farmers market:
Iroquois White-Corn Cakes with Maple Syrup and Bacon: Iroquois White Corn is an heirloom corn crop that dates back 1,400 years to the earliest Iroquois inhabitants of what is now Victor, NY. Pick up some bacon and maple syrup from Goode and Local and pastured eggs from Yellow Bell Farm and enjoy a farm-to-table breakfast featuring this ancient corn from upstate New York.
Three Sisters Soup: This classic Native American soup is a delicious, warming harvest soup made with the nourishing Three Sisters trio of corn, winter squash and beans.
Crawfish and Shrimp Pot with Spiced Sweet Potatoes: It’s peak sweet potato season right now and these hearty tubers will pair perfectly with juicy, sustainably harvested shrimp from P & S Seafood in this tasty, traditional Choctaw dish.
Hominy Stew with Ground Turkey: Although it is thought of as classic southern cuisine, hominy (also known as "hulled corn" in some traditional Native cooking) is actually an original Native American food.
Baked Salmon with Potlatch Seasoning: Salmon is revered as a sacred food amongst Native Nations of the Pacific Northwest while potlatch seasoning, named after their traditional gatherings, was originally used on freshly caught fish.
