PLEASE DO NOT TAG AS YOUR OWN OC OR PAIRING.
Nathan and Ruben share a bond more powerful than most; mutual understanding through past experiences no one should ever have to go through, and through past actions so horrible they cannot be spoken of. Their grief and the blood on their hands binds them to the STEM technology they created, which has alienated them from the rest of the world— but they give each other the comfort they have both longed for so desperately for years, and that is all they need. They are each other's counterpart; you cannot imagine one without the other, like two sides of the same coin. Through their pain, their grief, their desire, and their regret, they have become one.

#tew#edit:nathan#nuclearocs#nuclearedits#so much shame in my body but still used my taglist but um let me know if you want to be excluded from oc/ship web weaves#just really wanted to share this one because i'm very proud of it and i want it on my blog. so. :]#recognition of the self through the other + wanting so desperately for the other to be deserving of a second chance#because if there is hope for them than there is hope for you etc etc and so on. that's the core of their dynamic i think#they understand each other on such a fundamental level that no one else comes close to because they are in so many ways the same#like how in in the first game leslie could sync up with ru/vik and all that? nathan would be a VERY good candidate for that as well#and it makes me insane!! and then the added layer of nathan being lead developer of mobius' new and improved STEM system#which makes him the same as ru/vik AGAIN but in like. the way that they're both men of [computer] science#and there's the fact they both have a dead sister. they both killed their parents. they were both mobius playthings for YEARS#and they've happily killed and tortured during all of it. they're angry they're out for revenge they're completely disconnected from#the normal human experience and they're working with what they have. and then after all of that is over then what is left?#their story focuses on them picking up all the pieces. everything that's still salvageable at least. and try to start over in a way#they cannot be forgiven for what they've done but they can move on from the past and do different in the future#there's still things left undone and left unsaid... in my canon at least. i know there's not gonna be any more games. it's fine#anyway they end up going to therapy and then they get better they're not a doomed couple they just like being dramatic#if you read all of this we can get married tomorrow if you'd like

There's something so disingenuous about critics and fans who describe Nathan Shelley as an evil, irrational, ungrateful, unsympathetic villain. And then tack on praise for Nick Mohammed for bringing such an awful, vile creature to life.
As if that was Nick Mohammed's intention. As if all of his acting choices were carefully made so that the audience would perceive his character with such vehement (and often violent) hatred. As if he approached this character like a cartoon villain that everyone loves to hate.
That clearly hasn't been what Nick Mohammed's trying to do. It's obvious in his interviews and social media and--if one bothers to actually watch--the fucking show itself.
Deeply mischaracterizing Nick Mohammed's performance and then praising him for it reads like an excuse for so passionately hating Nathan Shelley. "Nate is an irredeemable piece of shit and I cry blood whenever I see him, but kudos to the actor for making me feel so irrationally enraged." Like, no, bro, you whipped yourself into that fervor. Nick Mohammed could be the worst actor in the entire world, and people would still hate Nathan because (1) he'd still look like Nick Mohammed, and (2) the writers still wouldn't have adjusted their storytelling to compensate for the limited sympathy white audiences possess for characters of color.
Seeing this so consistently (including from professional reviewers), I can't help but feel it's a response to actors in other projects being harassed, stalked, doxxed, and threatened with death, because audiences hate their character. (I'm thinking of Kelly Marie Tran, Anna Gunn, and way too many actors from The Walking Dead.)
It's a pattern. Step One: audiences cannot or will not empathize with (or even just let exist) a character due to their gender, race, disability, fatness, etc. Step Two: audiences direct their rage at the actor for playing that character and/or the audacity of stealing screentime that rightfully belongs to the main white dude.
The formula of bashing Nathan and praising Nick feels like a way to separate oneself from the people who also bash Nick. (For example, the people who tweet "I hate @NickMohammed.") It's a way to not seem like One of Those Awful People without interrogating the forces preventing the extension of one's sympathies to Nathan. But not doing Step Two doesn't make up for still doing Step One.
I don't think it's a good sign if so many people talk about a character in a manner they feel immediately requires an implied "but don't form a hate mob against the actor" addendum. Like, if one's take on a character could be construed as a call to violence, maybe one should rethink that take. And not just add, "the actor deserves ALL THE EMMYS and definitely not to get murdered on the street."

don't even get me started on jade literally not listening to nathan and getting him fired just because the show wants him to end back up at richmond and his arc is all about ted 💀 like for fuck's sake most of his development this season came from jade (WHO BARELY HAS A PERSONALITY. STILL. SHE'S LITERALLY JUST A MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRL I'M SO MAD ABOUT IT. WHY DOESN'T SHE GET TO HAVE DEPTH. MAYBE DON'T ADD MORE CHARACTERS TO YOUR SHOW WHEN YOU CANT HANDLE THEM) and now for her to fully do this behind his back is so fucked 😭 if u got me fired from a job i like id dump your ass so fast like jesus

I would just like to take this time to apologize to Nathan Myers. I was very skeptical of him at first. I wasn't sure if he was genuinely a nice brother or some type of manipulative, abusive, creep. He just seemed too good to be true so I was leaning towards him being some type of creep. It turns out he truly was just a nice person and a kind brother. 😔
If he had survived to this point, he would be one of my favourite characters. I'm sure my top 5 would look something like this:
1. Kenny
2. Jade
3. Nathan
4. Randall
5. Donna

ok now here's what bugs me about Fire Emblem/ Nathan because fuck. TW for discussions of sexual assault, but it's p retty much just me ranting about the pervert anime trope.
Like any other anime even vaguely involving women, I was really worried about the sexualization of female characters or just flat-out grossness that might pop up. Casual sexism, casual groping, all those things played for jokes, etc. Theres always one pervert that goes after the girls, and it sucks. The girls are always victimized, and nothing gets done. Everyone else just sighs or chuckles and goes "oh, classic Pervert! So silly" It always makes me want to chew glass. I don't think I would have stuck with this series if I saw that tbh.
And unfortunately, there was some of that. A lot of that. Mainly from Nathan/ Fire Emblem, the openly queer character.
I've always despised the "pervert character" anime trope. It's always played for laughs, always brushed off, just serves to pander to some audience. "But ooohh, it's ok!! The person gets hit/ told off repeatedly its all good!! :)" No. No it's fucking not. It's annoying, uncomfortable, and is the reason I have trouble interacting with a lot of anime these days. Because that shit is just always around, played for jokes, ruining the episodes no matter how good the plot is.
So. then there's Nathan, a queer character of color that I really wanted to root for and relate to, in the beginning. But throughout all of season 1, he's always groping someone's ass and making some comment that the other person clearly doesn't like. I'm mainly thinking about Antonio/ Bison right now. And I know what people will say. "Bison is strong enough. If he really didn't like it, he would tell Nathan to knock it off or defend himself." To which I say: shut up forever and get out. Hell no. That's way too close to "well, you must have actually wanted it" that's thrown to SA victims and I'm not having that shit.
Maybe it didn't happen often, but it happened enough that any time Fire Emblem showed up on screen, I was ready for an uncomfortable moment to happen and rolled my eyes.
I've debated it with myself. Nathan's a flirt, that's their character. Flamboyant and openly gay, which can be seen as fitting into many stereotypes. But that's not where I have the issue. Seeing a queer character struggle through their relationship with gender, with how they are accepted in society and how they accept themself, could have been wonderful. Honestly, during the movie, the scenes where Nathan is having flashbacks and battling with very real insecurities made me sympathetic.
I dunno. It was just so disappointing to see and I don't know if I have enough words for it. It bums me out a lot. I don't know what the conversation about Tiger and Bunny was like back in 2011. Maybe other people have said this, maybe there's more to this, but agh. I just had to vent about this, because it was such a let down.
But all of that sympathy is thrown out the window when I remember the way this character perpetuates the stereotype: queer people are predators. And no matter what the intention was, no matter what year it was, that's what it comes off as.
I hate it. Because the second movie. The Rising. Made me really invested in Nathan and his journey. Sure, it was quick, and a subplot, but they did so much with that.
His mother and father criticizing him. The feeling of disappointment. "The only thing you can do now is die." Just a few scenes and lines of dialogue can really reach an audience, if you know what you're doing.
But I'm not sure they did. Nathan wakes up, overcomes his trauma and worries like a switch just flipped, and comes into battle saying "men are made of courage and women are made of love, so gay people are invincible!"
Man. What the hell. I can't even begin to describe the confusion and disappintment I felt when I first saw that scene.
It gets better in season 2, I think. Fire Emblem is still gay and kicking ass, just not so touchy. Which I'm assuming means the writers took notes from before and cut that shit out.

Ted deserved to tell Nate how hurt he'd been by Nate's words and actions.
I don't care what the show is trying to peddle, Ted Lasso was in a bad state all season, and all of it started at the end of the last season after his confrontation and the fallout with Nate.
Unfortunately, with this season focusing on all the wrong aspects of everyone's story, we don't really know if Ted talked it through with Dr Sharon (who again, I thought was supposed to be playing a much bigger role this season). We did see him being weird with Lego Nate at the start of the season to mirror Nate experiencing guilt over his treatment of cardboard Ted, which never had any real conclusion except for that one phone call conversation with Michelle that filled me with my first bout of dread for this season.
It is entirely possible to forgive someone and still be upset with them about the choices they made that led to you getting hurt.
Healing takes time.
Nate didn't just insult Ted or leave Richmond to coach the Hammers. He saw Ted get publicly humiliated in a major newspaper outlet.despite Trent's best attempts, the public still reacted very negatively to Ted's public panic attacks.
That is a horrible thing to be carrying around. Even if he can understand that Nate was at his lowest moment, even if he holds no ill will towards his former friend.
In my opinion, the only way Ted could start his healing process that he was denied this season was through confronting Nate. Instead, they were kept apart, and the invitation and forgiveness Nate was desperately craving for his own healing journey was passed off to Beard. Who, in my opinion, didn't have enough emotional build-up through the season for that scene to hit the way it could have for me
