Mini review of Mewkledreamy (season 1)
Somehow I always end up watching not so well known kids anime. (Note: English isn’t my 1st language.) Contains minor spoilers.
Mewkledreamy is a mix of slice of life and magical girl show, and the show does it very well. Plot itself is very basic, collect some gems to get your wish come true while fighting evil. Since it's Sanrio show, the darker themes aren’t too much. Our main protagonist is Yume, very bright, easygoing and clumsy girl. She ends up meeting with her dream partner Mew, a talking toy. Together they can enter peoples dreams to purify their hearts. Soon her other friends also end up meeting with their own dream partners.

The main plot moves rather slow and it could be squeezed into 12-13 episodes, still 48 episodes didn’t feel a struggle to dwell into. We get to see how Yume handles her crush for 3rd year Sugiyama-senpai and just general everyday life between the characters. Yume’s classmates are nice as a supporting characters, they don’t feel too plain and add to the fun. Yume’s and Asahi’s friendship is also comforting. Later it’s clearly hinted that Asahi really likes Yume more than as a friend, but it doesn’t go past that.
Art wise the anime is pretty, pastel-y and the watercolor textures gives it softness. Also OST is generally pleasant, I didn’t care about the OP and ED songs though. Sound design is a spot on for me tho, there’s a lot fun details! Even though there’s no “wow 10/10″ elements, the production value is good.

Since I've been watching a lot similar shows, it's not a surprise that the blue girl is my favorite. Kotoko is mature and calm with a dorky side. Also the fact that she's into IT and robots is kind of refreshing for me.
Dream partner/toy wise my favorite would be Mew, mostly because the very effortless humor between her and Yume is spot on. Later in the show Rei enters and gosh, he is the only actually annoying character here. Weird and pushy mix of Japanese and French is just meh. Yuni is a bit 50-50 for me. He’s delightfully sassy with a hint of sadness, yet his presence is either fine or just sliiightly annoying. Yuni > Rei tbh.
Maira and Peko do a lot comedy based on tongue twisters, with subs you either get them or not. For me they’re mostly a pass.  All of the girls, Yume, Kotoko, Maira and Tokiwa are written quite OK with different traits, yet Asahi turns from a pleasant boy into slightly irritating towards the end as in Rei pushes him to do things when being hesitant.  However I have to mention the Valentines episode with Asahi and Yume is surprisingly good?? (It has some cross dressing which I don’t know what to think of...) Finale could have been.. better, I guess? It’s nothing too grand but has a lot stuff finally revealed. 2nd season started already but since 1st season is nicely wrapped (imo) there’s no huge urge to watch how the story will continue. All in all the show has nice balance of daily life with fantasy elements. Even though it’s very clearly a Sanrio show, the commercial side isn’t too pushy. Sometimes it’s merry and touching but again, Mewkledreamy doesn’t have “wow 10/10″ elements. It’s a solid 7/10 for me. If you have time, maybe check few of the episodes. :D
