Munsiyari Khaliya Top Trekking 2024
From 13.04.2024 to 19.04.2024, we were trekking in the Raja Rambha valley facing the Panchchuli peaks in Munsiyari, Uttarakhand. These five snow clad peaks faced the East and the Sun rose behind them and they caught the setting rays of the Sun.
Tumblr media
We were a group of 25.

We had an overcast spell. The clouds were heavy and the Sun peeped out rarely. The day in the mountains usually starts around 9 am after breakfast and we used to reach the upper camp site around 3 pm. The route was short, but steep sometimes. We used to enjoyed the drizzle before or after the lunch time and sometimes we even got mild hailstorms. Overall, a pleasant weather blessed us.
Tumblr media
Our trek route was:
Day 1 - reporting at Munsiyari.
Day 2 - Acclimatization walk to Nanda Devi temple.
Day 3 - flag off from Munsiyari to Martoli thatch, via Maheshar Kund.
Day 4 - Martoli Thatch to Rood Khan.
Day 5 - Rood Khan to Bhaisiya Tal.
Day 6 - Bhaisiya Tal to Khaliya Top and descent to Khaliya Dwar.
A vehicle picked us from Khaliya Dwar and dropped us back to Munsiyari base camp.
Day 7 - group broke after breakfast at Munsiyari.
Tumblr media

There was not a single soul in the entire trek route. No commercial group had any events here. We were the first batch - pioneers for 2024. After the base camp, there was no electricity and network. Bliss of digital detoxification. There was no light pollution too.
Tumblr media
The entire forest of rhododendrons in red, pink and mixture were blossoming.
Tumblr media
We crossed a waterfall too.
↑ Photo credit: to my trek mates of MKT - 01 ↑
We saw martens (animal), pug marks of bears.

And the area is known for its birds. I noticed the wisps of beard moss in the transition zone of the tree and the snow line. Beard moss make the landscape look ancient. We had an experienced trek mate, MS - who had completed a mountaineering course from NIM and he cautioned us not to step on the verglas. Verglas is a form of ice at the edges of a snow patch. It is extremely slippery and dangerous to tread on verglas. We avoided it and crossed the snow safely.
Tumblr media

I was stargazing every night and watching the Milky Way from the camp sites in the dark forest. The YHAI schedule is best and it made this possible.
6 am - bed tea.
7 am - breakfast & tea.
8 am - packed lunch.
9 am - start trekking to the next camp site.
12 pm - have the packed lunch in the mountains.
3 pm - reach the next camp site.
4 pm - welcome drink.
5 pm - tea & snacks.
6 pm - soup.
7 pm - dinner.
8 pm - symbolic camp fire.
9 pm - hot chocolate or hot coco drink.
9 pm to 5 am - घोड़े बेचकर सोना (sleep).
It used to be pitch dark after dinner. Only the torches provided some light. Symbolic bonfire 🔥 (campfire) used to happen for the next 2 hours. By 9 pm, the embers used to glow and the chill sent everyone to their tents. Before 10 pm, everyone is fast asleep. I was unlucky to have snoring trek mates in the tent. Anyway, sleep used to win and I used to wake up between 2:30 or 3:30 am to 4:30 am to stargaze.
Tumblr media
Emerging out of the tent with my camera, in the faint torch light, finding my way to align the frame of the Milky Way against a tree or a tent or a peak, I used to sit silently and click the photos. Sometimes somebody will wake up for nature's call and come out of the tent clumsily with the torch. I used to switch off my torch to avoid blinding them with the beam and I was completely invisible in my black poncho. Nobody knew that there is somebody around watching the beauty of night sky. I am sure they looked up in wonder and enjoyed the beauty of the dark night sky. I was clicking and stargazing silently and peacefully for 4 consecutive nights. Sheer bliss. I did get an opportunity to share the night sky with my trek mates on the last night and we all were enthralled by it.
Tumblr media
This sunlit slope took us to the highest point of the trek. This dry rocky patch had some ridges to place the feet. But in most parts, it was covered by dry tufted grass, which sprung out like fountains from the rock. You cannot see what's underneath the grass.
Is the rock really there or is there a hole and how deep? So one cautiously places the foot on the slippery silky grass blades and tries to feel the firm rock below.
Tumblr media
It so happened that a MD physician (HOD of medicine in a reputed hospital) twisted his ankle in the pursuit of crossing this patch. The organisers had Volini spray in their kit. Snow was around. It was applied to the ankle. After drying, Volini sprayed and crepe bandage was applied tightly in the figure of 8. Socks and shoes back again with 2 doses of RRA 200 and the doctor was able to trek the longest descent that started from 5.15 am to 3 pm.
(I had carried the bandage, homeopathic medicines & the snow was impromptu for RICE). Sadly only the R and E could not be applied as one has to come down. It is always desriable that medical service or attention is never required in the treks or trips.
The last descent from Khaliya top to Khaliya dwar was long and monotonous. we all were thankful when it ended.
Tumblr media
↑ Photo credit: to my trek mates of MKT - 01 ↑
The cooking staff of YHAI welcomed us with inviting meals that we relished to our heart's content. There used to be a sweet dish like gulab jamuns/ kheer/ sheera even at the higher camps. Kudos to YHAI to provide fresh, delicious and nutritious meals all along the trek.

The certifcates were given by YHAI's RT Sir and GG Sir.

Tumblr media
Overall, the entire experience was great. YHAI Delhi provided us with steel plates, spoons and mugs in all the camps even after leaving the base camp. The sleepings bags were of good quality that provided warmth even in the high altitude. The tents stay was warm and comfortable. All this was possible with YHAI trek leaders and the volunteering by the honarary members who were our camp leaders. I look forward to many more trekking expeditions with YHAI.

This was an evening shot of the Panchachuli-1 from Munsiyari, the first day we got there. Right after the rain ended, around 6:00 P.M. in the evening in the beginning of November. A hailstorm had just ended when we reached around 4:30-5:00 P.M. And then this view opened up. It's definitely not the best I could've done, but there was just so little light. And then there were issues with the focusing and all and I didn't have the tripod with me and, well it was a little frustrating. But the view was just so breathtaking that I decided I'll share it just to show like maybe 1/10th of what the real thing may have looked like. Hope you guy like it. . . . . #landscapes #munsiyari #blackandwhite #blackandwhitelandscape #uttrakhanddiaries #uttrakhand #panchachuli #moments #mountains #mountainlovers #trip #travel #traveluttrakhand #travelindia #nikon #nikonindia #nikonasia #nikonlandscape #nikonblackandwhite #bnw #bnwlandscape #bnwphotography #photooftheday #daily #photography #photographer #myphotography #myeverything (at Munsiyari, Uttarakhand) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp6n0e7vP-e/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ranikhet Tour
In the Kumaoni language, Ranikhet is referred to as Rnikhèt. Ranikhet is a hill station and cantonment town that can be found in the Almora district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is situated in close proximity to the town of Almora. The Kumaon Regiment (KRC) and the Naga Regiment both call it their home base, and the Indian Army is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep. In addition, the location of the Military Hospital may be found there. There are two distinct interpretations that may be made of the origin of the name Ranikhet. One story suggests that Padmini, queen of Katuari Raja Dudhan Dev (1180), selected this spot because she desired to study, play, and stay there; hence, the region became known as Ranikhet as a result of this choice. The other reason is that it was the location of many battles and was referred to as Rankshetra, which is a Sanskrit word that literally translates to "the battlefield." In Ranikhet, the Mankameshwar Temple is a well-known and significant monument. The Kumaon Regiment was the organization that was in charge of constructing the temple. You'll find it immediately across the street from both the Shawl Factory and the Gurudwara. As soon as one steps foot inside the temple, they will be greeted by statues of Radha and Krishna, in addition to Ma Kalika and Lord Shiva.
Get in contact with one of our knowledgeable Trip Counselors if you have any questions about the Ranikhet excursions we provide, which are both educational and affordable.

Train, bus & helicopter between home & base camp for Uttarakhand trek
11.04.2024, Thursday.
Three friends met at the station. One of us had actually joined impromptu (on-the-spot) and had managed to get all confirmed reservations (not even RACs)!
Tumblr media
The final packing of the bag concluded a few hours before the journey started.
Tumblr media
My bag weighed 13 kg.
Tumblr media
We alighted at Delhi.
Tumblr media
Another train journey took us to the foothills of Uttarakhand - Kathgodam. We met our fellow trekkers in this train for the first time - Paresh Bhai from Ahmedabad and Govind Bhai from Panvel, MH.
Tumblr media
12.04.2024, Friday.
22:30 The train reached Kathgodam. Our KMVN's hotel TRH Kumaon Dwar just 5 minutes from Kathgodam railway station and we fell off to sleep in the clean rooms.
Tumblr media
13.04.2024, Saturday - day 1 - reporting for the trek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our batch of 25 gathered on time and the long journey to Munsiyari starts. It is our base camp.
Tumblr media
On the way, we passed by the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram, Kainchi Dham. It is approximately 3 hours from Kathgodam and 8 hours from Munsiyari. We saw it from the top and the road swirls next to it in the valley. I wish we could have stopped for darshan of this powerful place. Neem Karoli Baba was the avataar of Lord Hanuman. Jay Shri Ram.
Tumblr media
Pandey Lodge at Munsiyari is our base camp.
Tumblr media
The long spacious room accommodated 5 trek mates and it had 2 attached washrooms. The stay was comfortable in the clean room.
14.04.2024, Sunday - acclimatization day.
Tumblr media
YHAI Delhi, the organiser of this trek had arranged a hike to the nearby Nanda Devi Mandir.
15.04.2024, Monday - flag off.
Tumblr media
Our trek starts by a flag off ceremony and we walk into the jungle.
Our trek route will face the Panch Chouli peaks (5 snow clad peaks). And a detailed description of the trek will be given in the blog posts to follow.
Tumblr media
19.04.2024, Friday - group breaks & election day.
Now the plan to RETURN actually started the moment we were seated in the bus from Kathgodam to Munsiyari.
It was election day. And public transport was not easily available. Some of our group members panicked and requested that the acclimatization can be forfeited (dangerous when the trek is an high-altitude one) and thankfully nothing of that sort happened. Members had their flights and trains booked and were apprehensive that they might miss them.
Tumblr media
We had booked our return by helicopter and the ride was my life's first. Many of us had traveled in aeroplanes, but helicopter travel is rare. There is weight limit. Anyone above 85 kg and anyone's luggage above 5 kg would be overweight and will pay INR 100/- per kg. My luggage was was 8 kg above the permissible limit and I had to pay Rs. 800/- more. After taxation and luggage, my total fare for the helicopter ride was INR 4475/-.
The same friend who had booked impromptu tickets, got confirmed helicopter tickets for us.
Tumblr media
The experience was good. It's choppy. No wonder, it is called a chopper 🚁.
The best part of this aerial journey is bypassing the 12 hour road trip, which dehydrated me completely while coming here.
7 antiperistaltic movements and eyes closed tight. Too much.
The 🚁 ride cuts the travel time to just 45 minutes. The pilot doesn't allow any recording even with a mobile. Flight mode is compulsory. He was shouting some instructions inside the cabin with the rotors on and we couldn't hear anything. We just nodded and actually didn't utter a word in the entire flight and gestured to our neighbours about the land formations seen from the top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet frankly I did feel nauseous, but thankfully not as bad as the road trip.
From the top, Uttarakhand has only mountains, valleys, towns, and rivers. The mountains are lush green. The rivers are running dry.
Nainital is easily identifiable from the top, with the lake after which it is named and also the other lakes of Nainital.
From the chopper 🚁, when all the mountain ranges ended, our ride ended, with landing in the plains at Haldwani. It was hot and jolted us.
Tumblr media
We had changed our train's boarding point to Haldwani and INR 20/- per head rickshaw (x 3 passengers = 60/-), dropped us to Haldwani railway station, which was just 15 minutes away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Friends parted.
Tumblr media
We took the Kathgodam - Delhi Junction train.
Tumblr media
The train reached Delhi Junction at 3:30 am.
Tumblr media
We rested till 6 am in the waiting room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Delhi has lots of travel options, but we selected to walk the last mile after metro journey to a delicious breakfast at Janpath.
Tumblr media
Now the heat awaits us, but my Delhi friend's plan saved us. Check out what Delhi has in store for us and it will be a pleasant surprise. A ride in my friend's Mercedes Benz!
Check out my trek experience with YHAI at Munsiyari Khaliya Top in Uttarakhand.

Its one of those days i couldn't sleep because the world is beautiful and pretty and,,, i mean. We went to ranthambore and ran into a tiger at the gate. It stood to the left and watched our jeep pass by. We saw it again a dew hours later. We went to thar and traveller quite far, first on normal jeeps, then ones designed specifically for sand (my hair whipped all over my face from the wind from how fast it was going, and i looked kinda freaky) , then on long trains of camels and finally we played for hours on a sand dune and watched the sun set and ive never experienced anything like that again, because there isnt anything like that i don't think. We saw a fox at bharatpur - we saw plenty of birds, too, but i only remember the fox for some reason, it was years ago - and once we were returning from rishikesh and my father called a pair of foxes that we simply ran into as "unfed dogs" and i think aboutthat to this day. We'vebeen to sikkim, and a bridge collapsed so on the third or fourth day of our trip we crossed a river by foot on a very unstable mountain and thats not an experience i will ever forget, it was dangerous but so fun. I slipped and fell into a riverlet a dew days after that and it was cold. In a different trip we ate maggi at the last restaurant of india in the Himalayas... i forget where it is, but it had been a surreal experience. Waking up to the sounds of sparrows and crows and mainas in munsiyari. Following a group of dogs to a temple, as if they were our tour guides for the day. We met a lady with a goat called Kaju (cashew) and she said it was named by someone from the same city as me, another tourist who passed by months ago. She let me hold the goat and it was so soft and precious. A vulture landed near our house the other day. Thats not normal. That was the first time i had ever seen one. Vultures are big. That thing was easily twice or thrice the size of the kites we get. One of those kites tried to bother it but its attempts failed and it went away. The vulture stayed in the same spot for at least 20 hours before it left. A friend told me that i should have called animal services, because that's not normal.
I've fed cows and dogs and crows by hand. It's a precious feeling. The crow looked right in my eyes and that was the first time i understood how smart they are. You can see it in their eyes. You can see it in a cow and a dog and a fox and in tigers and lions and squirrels and birds. We went to the east coast of the US and the squirrels there are so much bigger than ours. We've been to europe and this guy just... picked a pigeon off the street and put it on my arms before i processed whats going on. We rode a ship from britain to somewhere, i didnt understand much of the trip i had no clue what i was doinf, and theres nothing really like that. And theres nothing like seeing the clouds from a plane or talking to people as the scenery passes by on a train or,,,
Its just one of those days that i think about how pretty and beautiful the world is
