Movie Review | Agneepath (Anand, 1990)
Tumblr media
This review contains mild spoilers.
Having only seen this in pan-and-scan versions previously, I was struck on this rewatch by how damn good the movie looks. Every surface seems to shimmer, perfectly catching the perpetual magic hour lighting. Every frame feels huge. We don't just look at things, we look at them throw imposing low angles, imposing crane shots, and imposing low angles that turn into imposing crane shots and vice versa. Interiors are captured with the full weight of the deep focus cinematography and smoky blue lighting. Characters wear flashy suits and hide behind designer sunglasses. Imagine an entire movie shot like the opening scenes of Beverly Hills Cop II and you get the idea.
This flashy style makes more sense when you realize the movie uses as its primary inspiration the plot of Scarface, but making it distinctly Indian. The film is less concerned with anti-capitalist satire (for one thing, it's not clear what business the protagonist is in - he's against drugs and presumably against prostitution, leaving the only criminal activities we see him commit to be the murder of other criminals) and more concerned with familial bonds, and perhaps implicitly, nationalist fervour. The Sosa stand-in villain conducts his business from the Mauritius, happy to exploit his homeland from abroad, and has in his employ a white man, whom the hero derides for being a foreigner. This was made in the years before India underwent economic liberalization, and there's a sense of a country that's crumbling, especially when the high gloss visual style is directed towards the decaying slums the movie periodically detours into.
That sense of decay also manifests in the lead performance by Amitabh Bachchan, whose presence has always felt bigger than the movies and here seems to be a symbol as much as an actor. Bachchan is past his Angry Young Man prime from the '70s and before his patriarch phase starting in the 2000s, and his decision to play his character as a grotesque (not unlike Al Pacino in this movie's inspiration, replete with extremely distinct speaking voice) feels like the uglier dimensions of his persona corroding, warping his formidable star power into something more monstrous. The movie doesn't want us to dislike him too much. There's the no drugs policy, the fact that he's shown to help the community and is in fact so popular that when he ends up in the hospital, the locals riot so they can donate blood (despite the hospital being well stocked). But the fiery quality of his performance has a way of burning through the aesthetic trappings of the movie around him and lingering beyond the confines of the narrative. It's one of his best performances, and one of his weirdest. (Interesting, the villain is played by Danny Denzongpa, who was a friend of Bachchan's wife but avoided appearing alongside him earlier for fear of being outshined. I'd say he acquits himself well here, playing his role with sinister understatement. The super cool sunglasses help, of course.)
The movie does not have the cleanest of narratives (the stuff involving Mithun Chakraborthy in village idiot mode feel at odds with the overall tone) and clearly doesn't care about the musical numbers (one of them has Chakraborthy, best known for Disco Dancer, dancing in a disco but not exactly disco dancing, despite what the lyrics claim). But the constant presence of violence (this is quite a bit bloodier than the average Bollywood movie from this era) and the gangster story arc give this both a sense of sprawl and forward momentum. And there's an undeniably elemental power to the imagery, the hero being driven to revenge as blood drips from his father's face onto his own, the sea of bodies during the festival when the hero is ambushed, and the village going up in flames like the fires of hell during the climactic assault on the villain's mansion.

Supreme Court Denies Legalizing: Same-Sex Marriages
This article on 'Supreme Court Denies Legalizing Same-Sex Marriages in a 3:2 Verdict' was written by Ishika Agarwal, an intern at Legal Upanishad.
Introduction
Since ancient times, marriage has been regarded as a sacred thread creating a bond between two people, and this bond not only connects two souls but also two families. In the past, marriage was only possible between a man and a woman. The concept of same-sex marriage or gay marriage did not exist at that time. Those who solemnized their marriage and lived together got legal and social recognition. Both statutory and personal laws have recognized heterosexual marriage, i.e., marriage between the opposite gender. However, marriage between people of the same sex was not recognized until recent times. There are only a few countries around the world that have given legal recognition to same-sex marriages. India has not accepted or granted legal recognition to same-sex marriage. In this article, we will discuss the recent decision of the Supreme Court regarding same-sex marriages in India.
Background of the case
There was a total of 21 petitions filed by various same-sex couples, LGBTQIA+ activists, and transgender persons. These petitions took issue with the Special Marriage Act 1954, the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, and the Foreign Marriage Act 1969. These petitions were transferred to the Constitutional bench of the Supreme Court on January 6, 2023. The petitioners, who are supported by prominent lawyers such as Mukul Rohatgi, Abhishek, Manu Singhvi, Raju Ramachandran, Anand Grover, Geeta Luthra, K V Viswanathan, Saurabh Kirpal, and Menaka Guruswamy have highlighted the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals and urged the court to recognize such a union, which would enable them to lead a life of dignity comparable to that of heterosexual couples. They also urged that same-sex marriage should be given legal recognition under the Special Marriage Act so that they can avail the other benefits. The Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, representing the Union of India, argued that a total of 160 laws would be affected if marriage equality was granted and further added that it is the Parliament that can make, amend, or repeal the laws and Courts have not been conferred with such powers. Contact Us and avail the best assignment help for students available online! Further, the Union Government indicated its willingness to set up a committee to determine whether certain privileges can be bestowed upon same-sex and queer couples without formally recognizing their relationship as a form of marriage. Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, representing Madhya Pradesh State, opposed the petition along with senior advocate Kapil Sibal and senior advocate Arvind Datar.  The high-profile case was heard by a panel of five judges of the Supreme Court of India, including Chief Justice of the Union of India DY Chandrachud, comprising Justices SK Kaul and S Ravindran Bhat. The other members of the panel were Justices Hima Kohli and P. S. Narasimha.
Other countries' views on same-sex marriage
According to the Human Rights Campaign, a US-based LGBTQ advocacy group, 32 countries have recognized gay marriage. This marriage is recognized by court rulings only in 10 countries. These countries include the US, Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, South Africa, Taiwan, Argentina, and Canada. In the year 2019, Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize gay marriage. Most other countries around the world have already passed laws to allow same-sex couples to get married.
Judgement of the Supreme Court
On Tuesday, i.e., October 17, 2023, the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court pronounced four judgements that were written by CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice SK Kaul, Justice Ravindra Bhat, and Justice PS Narasimha, respectively. CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice SK Kaul agreed, while Justice Ravindra Bhat, Justice Hima Kohli, and Justice PS Narasimha agreed on the same opinion.
Judgement of CJI DY Chandrachud
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) ruled that the Court of Justice is not able to invalidate the Special Marriage Act (SMA) as the Parliament and State Legislature have the exclusive power to do so, leaving the decision-making to them. The Court further asserted that any invalidity of the SMA would result in the loss of the advantages of progressive legislation. Furthermore, he said that the guidelines of the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), a government agency under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, discriminate against atypical, unmarried couples adopting a child, thus violating Article 15 of the Constitution, and held that unmarried couples, including queer couples, can jointly adopt a child. He was in favour of the recommendation made by the Union government to constitute a committee to determine the rights and entitlements of queer couples.
Judgement of Justice SK Kaul
Judge Kaul concurred with the view of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) that civil unions for same-sex couples should be recognised by law and that this is an important step towards achieving marriage equality.
Judgement of Justice Ravindra Bhat
He disagreed with the judgement of CJI DY Chandrachud and said that civil unions can only be granted via enacted laws. However, he also favoured the recommendation made by the Union Government. He further added that the present case is very different from previous cases in the way that previous cases were related to the protection of citizens’ rights from violence or harm caused to them by the state. He submitted that the right to marry is not a fundamental right. Justice Bhat stated that the Court does not have the power to constitute a legal framework in this regard, as there are several grounds that need to be taken into consideration, and it is only the legislature that can do so.
Judgement of Justice PS Narasimha
Consenting with Justice Ravindra Bhat, Justice PS Narasimha said that the right to marry is a statutory right and not a constitutional right. He further agreed with Justice Ravindra Bhat with respect to the CARA regulations and said that unmarried couples, including queer couples, do not have the right to adopt, and these regulations could not be declared unconstitutional. With respect to schemes of gratuity, pensions, insurance, etc. that are not applicable to queer couples, legislative policies in that respect should be taken into consideration.
Conclusion
The Supreme Court refused to give constitutional validity to same-sex marriages by a 3:2 majority and also held civil unions unconstitutional. The Supreme Court accepted the recommendation of the Union Government, as stated by the Solicitor General of India, to constitute a high-powered committee to examine the rights, entitlements, and other concerns related to same-sex couples but refused to validate the adoption by unmarried couples and queer couples.

Movie Review | Hum (Anand, 1991)
Tumblr media
This review contains mild spoilers.
While I hadn't seen this before, I'd listened to this song from the movie countless times. (For those not familiar with Bollywood, most movies are not only musicals but often marketed on the basis of the songs, which in a lot of cases are more popular than the movies themselves.) Now, between the fact that I don't speak Hindi and the fact that seeing it outside the movie, I wasn't able to properly contextualize what exactly was going on. But seeing it within the movie, where it's introduced by a character saying all the dockworkers are going to see the hero kiss his girlfriend, and the thrusting motions in the choreography, it, uh, plays a little differently. To be fair, the dockworkers are very poor, so this is their only source of enjoyment. This is also easily the best musical number in the movie, so it understandably returns to it whenever possibly, through an assortment of flashbacks and reprises.
The narrative surrounding this scene is that there's a mobster played by Danny Denzongpa who keeps the dockworkers poor and stops them presumably from unionizing, so it's up to Amitabh Bachchan as the coolest of the dockworkers to stand up to him and take care of everybody. There's also a union leader / labour activist type who is given no personality types other than being righteous, so his scenes are a total drag, but thankfully he has a foxy sister (the girlfriend from the aforementioned musical number), so it evens out. But this story of dockworkers versus their criminal bosses sounds like enough material for a movie, and Bachchan and Denzongpa are both great screen presences and Mukul S. Anand shoots this in a similarly grandiose style as his Agneepath from the previous year, so there's plenty to enjoy.
However, this really only makes up the first hour of the movie, which then jumps forward a few decades so that Bachchan can grow up to his actual age instead of the supposed twenty-something he was in the first act (and grow an awful teenstache to boot, on top of becoming a wet blanket as he decries the use of violence with some regularity), for his brothers who were literal children in the first act to grow up into Rajinikanth and Govinda, for Denzongpa to get out of prison and stomp around in his tattered suit which he never changes out of, and for the crooked police inspector played by Anupam Kher (who has a lookalike sidekick) to become a crooked government contractor looking to sell defective tanks to the Indian army. Also there's a general and a starving actor both played by Kader Khan, the former of whom Bachchan tries to impress by doing an awful British accent and the latter who replaces the former as part of Kher's scheme. And the foxy girlfriend played by Kimi Katkar is now a famous actress. And a disgraced soldier named Captain Zatack who likes to attack.
In case you're wondering, none of this hangs together, although there's usually enough happening to keep you entertained. Apparently Agneepath flopped while this was a massive hit, and I have to assume audiences preferred the buffet approach to this one's pleasures as well as it's overall lighter tone, even the grimness and relative singlemindedness are what appealed to me about the other movie. This is a lot less action-heavy than Agneepath, although Anand shoots what's there for maximum impact (lots of slow motion, and those low angles and crane shots, plus at least one memorable stunt). And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the scene in the disco where Rajinikanth and Govinda, the latter dressed like Crocodile Dundee, beat the shit out of Captain Zatack and his goons while Prince's "Batdance" plays on the soundtrack. In case you're wondering, it's Rajinikanth who mouths "Get the funk up!"

Khuda Gawah Hindi movie
Khuda Gawah (lit. 'God is the Witness') is a 1992 Indian epic drama film, written and directed by Mukul S. Anand. The film stars Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles. Akkineni Nagarjuna, Shilpa Shirodkar, and Danny Denzongpa are featured in supporting roles. The original score was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The film marked Sridevi and Bachchan's third collaboration. In the film; Badshah Khan travels from Afghanistan to India to find the killer of Benazir's father so that he can impress her. He succeeds but soon finds himself framed for a murder and trapped in an Indian prison.
During a Buzkashi competition with a neighbouring tribe in Afghanistan, Badshah Khan (Amitabh Bachchan) falls in love with Benazir (Sridevi) and wants to marry her. Benazir agrees to marry him, on the condition that he must bring her the head of Habibullah, who killed her father. Badshah Khan goes to India to search for Habibullah. He finds Habibullah in a prison and breaks him out to take him back. He has the jailor Ranveer Singh (Vikram Gokhale) on his trail. He chops off Habibullah's head. When confronted by Ranveer, he tells him that he would be back in a month to receive punishment for taking Habibullah. Badshah goes back to Afghanistan and marries Benazir; after the time limit, he comes back to India and surrenders himself to Ranveer Singh, who he addresses as "Rajput Khan" and is jailed for five years. While Badshah Khan is away, his childhood friend Khuda Baksh (Danny Denzongpa) assumes the role of a guardian for Benazir.
To avenge Habibullah's death, his brother Pasha (Kiran Kumar) kidnaps Heena, the daughter of jailor Ranveer, ransoming her in return for Badshah. Badshah finds out about this and escapes from jail; he confronts Pasha, only to have Inspector Aziz Mirza (Bharat Kapoor) kill Ranveer Singh. With Ranveer Singh's daughter as a pawn in Pasha's hands, Badshah admits to killing Ranveer Singh and is sentenced to 15 years. When Aziz's wife (who thinks of Badshah as her brother) visits him, she ends up killing her husband to protect Badshah, but Badshah takes the blame for that murder as well, since he believes that her son Raja needs her.
At that time, Benazir sends Khuda Baksh to check on Badshah. Due to his very long stay in prison, Badshah makes Khuda Baksh promise to take care of his daughter Mehndi and tell his wife Benazir that he is now dead so that she can move on rather than wait for him. Benazir goes mad when she hears the news that her husband is dead.
On coming out of prison, Badshah meets with his now grown daughter, Mehndi (also Sridevi), who has found out that her father is still alive and has come to India to look for her father; the daughter of Ranveer Singh, Heena (Shilpa Shirodkar), who is also in the police force and knows all about Badshah's past and respects him as her uncle; and the son of Inspector Aziz Mirza, Inspector Raja Mirza (Nagarjuna), who has found out that it was Badshah who had killed his father and is out for vengeance. In a twist of fate, Raja is in love with Mehndi, even though he wants to kill her father.
Pasha, now a major crime lord, gets involved. Benazir and Khuda Baksh are kidnapped by him. The truth is eventually revealed to Raja about his father, and he joins of hands with Badshah and Heena to kill their mutual enemy. Badshah and Benazir grab one arm each of Pasha as they ride on separate horses like the beginning of the film and throw him into a huge rock, killing him. They ride off into the sunset, finally together.

Mira Nair, Naseeruddin Shah among 300 signatories extend support to students protesting CAA-NRC: ‘Our silence ends now’ - bollywood
Tumblr media
More than 300 prominent individuals, including filmmakers Mira Nair, Nandita Das, actors Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Jaaved Jafferi, Homi K Bhabha, Partha Chatterjee, Anita Desai, Kiran Desai, TM Krishna, Ashish Nandy, and Gaytri Chakravorty Spivak, among others, have signed an open letter, expressing their solidarity with the students of India who have been protesting Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and against the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Extending their support to the students, the signatories said in their letter, “We stand in solidarity with the students and others who are protesting and speaking out against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and against the National Register of Citizens (NRC). We salute their collective cry for upholding the principles of the Constitution of India, with its promise of a plural and diverse society. We are aware that we have not always lived up to that promise, and many of us have too often remained silent in the face of injustice. The gravity of this moment demands that each of us stand for our principles.” Also read: Shah Rukh Khan: ‘I am a Muslim, my wife is a Hindu and my kids are Hindustan’. Watch video Here is the complete text of the letter: An open statement from members of the Creative and Scholarly Community in IndiaWe are artists, filmmakers, writers and scholars. Our work reflects people’s lives, struggles and hopes. We offer our dreams to everyone. But what dream can show us the way in the midst of the present nightmare? Our vision for this nation demands that we speak up now, in the name of our democracy and the constitution that protects it. We stand in solidarity with the students and others who are protesting and speaking out against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and against the National Register of Citizens (NRC). We salute their collective cry for upholding the principles of the Constitution of India, with its promise of a plural and diverse society. We are aware that we have not always lived up to that promise, and many of us have too often remained silent in the face of injustice. The gravity of this moment demands that each of us stand for our principles. The policies and actions of the present government, passed quickly through parliament and without opportunity for public dissent or open discussion, are antithetical to the principle of a secular, inclusive nation. The soul of the nation is threatened. The livelihoods and statehoods of millions of our fellow Indians are at stake. Under the NRC, anyone unable to produce documentation (which, in many cases, does not exist) to prove their ancestry may be rendered stateless.  Those deemed“illegal” through the NRC may be eligible for citizenship under the CAA, unless they are Muslim.Contrary to the stated objective of the government, this does not appear to be a benign legislation, only meant to shelter persecuted minorities. The list of exclusions seems to indicate otherwise. Why are minorities from other neighbours like Sri Lanka, China and Myanmar excluded? Isit because the ruling powers in these latter countries are not Muslim? It appears that the legislation believes that only Muslim governments can be perpetrators of religious persecution. Why exclude the most persecuted minorities in the region, the Rohingya of Myanmar or the Uighurs of China? This legislation only acknowledges Muslim perpetrators, never Muslim victims. The aim is transparent: Muslims are the unwelcome Other. This is state-sanctioned religious persecution, and we will not condone it. In Assam and the Northeast, and in Kashmir, the indigenous identity and livelihood is threatened as never before, and we will not condone it. The response of the government and law-enforcement agencies to the distress of its citizens has been callous and high-handed. India has seen the most Internet shutdowns of any democracy in the world. Police brutality has left hundreds injured, including many students from Jamia Milia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University. Several citizens have been killed while protesting. Many more have been placed in preventive detention. Section 144 has been imposed in numerous states to curb protests. We need look no further than Kashmir to see how far this government is willing to go to suppress democratic dissent. Kashmir is now living under the longest Internet shutdown ever imposed by a democratic government. Enough is enough. Those of us who have been quiet in the past, our silence ends now. We will be clear-sighted in our dissent. Like our freedom fighters before us, we stand for a secular and inclusive vision of India. We stand with those who bravely oppose anti-Muslim and divisive policies. We stand with those who stand up for democracy. We will be with you on our streets and across all our platforms. We are in solidarity.” Here is a list of some the signatories: Rahman Abbas, Anvita Abbi, Ajayan Adat, Ramona Adhikari, Faraz Ahmad, Anvar Ali, Zaheer Ali, Lalitha Alilu, Shimit Amin, Jyothi Ananthasubbarao, Vidya Das Arora, Sushila Bahanda, Vikas Bajpai, Ritwik Banerjee, Sudeshna Banerjee, Sumanta Banerjee, Susan Barton, Aamir Bashir, Amit Basole, Rakhi Basu, Dev Benegal, Homi Bhabha, Amit Bhaduri, Madhu Bhaduri, Nabakumar Bhattacharyya, Akeel Bilgrami, Rani Day Burra, Sundar Burra, Meena C.
