"So what did you sacrifice for yours?"
My nail technician asked me with a smile.
Traditional witches — those who inherited it — can recognize each other at first glance.
And I could tell she was from Samar, one of the most notoriously supernatural places in the Philippines.
You see, while witchcraft in the Western world in 2022 is all about cute tarot cards and cheap crystals on Amazon, witchcraft in the purest parts of the Philippines is still the way it always has been. Pain and retribution. Magical healing and definite fortunetelling.
Some say it’s bullshit. But if you haven’t gone there yourself and truly witnessed it, you have no right to speak.
And those of you who aren't just pretending will know this: A witch's powers come at a price. You have to sacrifice something in order to secure it.
"You first," I told her.
"My beauty," Bertha said. That’s what we’ll call her.
"Nah, you still have it." She does.
"Then why do you think I'm a manicurist?" she asked. "I could've been Miss Universe. You have no idea."
“How was your initiation like?” I asked her.
She said it was her grandfather who had it. He surrounded his house with wax apple and mango trees. Whenever his neighbors would ask for permission to take some fruits, he would always gladly give it. But one time, a bunch of travelers passed by and didn’t think to ask first. One died on the spot, the other’s mouth rotted for days before he too died, and the third was left alive as a warning to others.
“Was it your grandpa’s pet entities living in the trees, or…?” I clarified.
“Orisons planted with the trees. The strongest kind of witchcraft.”
“Yes. When you can hurt, heal and help with just words and nothing more, you’re among the most powerful,” I added.
When her grandpa was in his late 90s, and his shoulders were almost touching his knees, he still wouldn’t die. Because it — his power — wouldn’t let him. Not until he’s passed it on. But his son, Bertha’s dad, was a devout Catholic and wanted nothing to do with this “evil”. His daughter, Bertha’s aunt, failed the inheritance ritual when she ran away screaming from a snake in the forest.
Bertha, then still really just a girl, had always been in awe of how everyone feared her grandfather. Unwealthy though they were, no one ever did them harm. They were afraid to. People had more respect for them than they did for the Mayor, the Chief of Police and the old-money families in their province. So she asked her grandpa to pass it on to her.
In the dead of night, Bertha’s grandpa took her to the forest, which was only nearby. When they came to a gigantic tree, he spoke a foreign incantation, and a cave opened underneath it.
“Always look straight ahead. No matter what you hear, never turn even the slightest,” his grandpa instructed. “And follow my exact footsteps, even if there seems to be a hole where I stepped.”
And so she did. Even when an enormous snake slithered to where her grandfather stood just a moment before, she stepped on it. Not fearlessly, but bravely.
“It was very anticlimactic,” she told me. “There was no fearsome fairy waiting at the end of the path. Nor a well of shining diamonds, or a gathering of my ancestors’ ghosts. There was just darkness and quiet. The purest kind of both.”
Her grandfather started speaking. “She has no child to give up. She is only a child herself. She has no wealth to sacrifice. We neither have nor desire it. She has no talent to offer. She can neither sing nor recite poetry. But by gods, is she beautiful.”
“Bertha, are you willing to give it up?” he asked.
“Yes,” she answered.
Bertha started screaming. As if boiling water was devouring her skin. Her chest felt like it was on fire. She was being burned alive. She fainted.
Her grandfather told her the sacrifice lasted about 10 seconds. She said it felt like it took years. Her body remains scarred to this day.
“Why is it worth it?” I asked. A loaded question. Of course it’s worth it.
“Some people train their whole lives to be able to defend themselves. Others spend millions of money on a cure for their illnesses. I only have to utter a word, and all harm sent towards me will ricochet. I may get COVID, but I will never die, unless I’m ready.”
“Awesome,” I said.
“Your turn,” she reminded me.
“Would you rather have my answer, or that?” I asked, pointing to the iconic green box of Patchi beside my Palm Springs Mini.
She laughed. “I’ll have the chocolate. You keep your secrets.”

it wouldn’t be the linda fairbairn extended universe without air caledonian! (enlarge for better quality. notes below)
(a320 illustrations provided for free personal use)
i spent almost eight hours total doing this and i do not regret a single minute of it 😮‍💨😮‍💨
the liveries
literally fought for my life with the clipping masks 😵‍💫
Tumblr media
this is my attempt at a ‘retro’ livery which was sort of teased in late 2022
it combines a few elements that saw some vogue in the 70s (the cheatline, or the stripe running down the fuselage) and the hockey stick (the cheatline being carried up into the tail, which i…sort of did…to incorporate it into the saltire) combined with an element that didn’t really become popular until after the 70s (the ‘eurowhite’ color scheme that forced me to invert the saltire)
if caledonian’s origins can be traced back to regional flights in the very late 70s, slowly growing the fleet until acquiring the A320 to expand its range, i’d want it to have a sort of ‘retro’ looking livery. the original planes probably wouldn’t have been white, though. most likely aluminum
i used helvetica for the name of the airline on the side of the fuselage, which also happens to look very similar to the font of choice for philippine airlines. i did not realize this until after i’d exported it because my dad looked over my shoulder and commented.
Tumblr media
this is their ‘redesign’ livery and the last one before the acquisition. i’d previously depicted a version of it back in 2021 but when i tried it for size parts of it looked so horrifying that i had to change it up a bit
caledonian has always existed in my head as some mix of ‘national carrier’ and ‘budget airline’ swinging a little more toward the latter for purposes of the lfeu so the bold color scheme and billboard style is honestly inspired by airlines like southwest (thank god they’re not shit brown anymore), easyjet (easy go… and thee air caledonian blueprint), and spirit (highlighter planes)
the saltire was literally me messing around with brushes and realizing like hmmmm. this actually looks pretty neat! now i know i’ve been saying air caledonian’s probably a budget airline, but as stated before, it’s also got some elements of the national carrier thing going, which is why i’m so insistent on the saltire motif
not to do with the livery but i also think since cal exists in that grey area they do have certain elements of a Not Low Cost Airline (like business class vs economy seats…i mean you’re not lying flat in any of these planes lol but you can have a kit if the pilots didn’t burgle the socks out of them) and that could have financially hurt them which would make selling out to swiss more appealing and less wounding that a ‘national carrier’ is being chopped. idk how this works though. im playing with airlines like dolls
the uniforms
i love designing uniforms. actually i love uniforms in general. i miss wearing a school uniform i did not have to think about what to wear on a daily basis. i could commit time to silly fanfiction and my meager attempts at making my own drawing style
qantas did not have tailored uniforms for differing body types until 2016 but this is fiction and the chief pilot of air cal is canonically a #GirlDad. we have tailored uniforms here. and a hat/tie variant. and a skirt option.
i reasoned since air caledonian is a scottish airline it should have formalized cold weather uniform requirements and i saw some rly cute pullover sweaters (think they were on easyjet pilots) so those went in
also the reason hats are required with the trench coat is for easy recognizability. this is indeed a policy at some airlines. martin crieff does have a point here.
oh also i darkened the jackets and trousers lol i just felt like it looked better
i think that’s all i wanted to say…

Hello Universe!
Pageant blogger yarn?! I can try, right?
Last December, Annie and I were in a call. One of the things we talked about was pageantry—Miss Earth 2022 had just been crowned a few weeks prior.
I've been a pageant fanatic for as long as I can remember. But it was only until these recent years that I started making my personal predictions for the pageants that I follow—and I keep them to myself. I usually make ones for Miss Universe, then Miss Universe Philippines when it was inaugurated, and sometimes I also do Miss Earth. I don't remember any time that I did predictions for Binibining Pilipinas.
I even have these excel sheets for scores and all that, to help me determine my picks.
That's when I told Annie that my predictions have a high accuracy rate. I don't predict who will be crowned, but somewhere in those that I scored high always emerged as the winner.
So... here it is—as requested! My Top Picks for the 71st Miss Universe competition.
Upper Tier
They all did well in swimsuit and evening gown competitions. I don't want to say that these are my Top 5, but I'm almost 100% sure they would make it to the semifinals.
Tumblr media
USA nailed both competitions. Enough said. She is THE frontrunner.
Curaçao caught my attention from the moment she introduced herself—I immediately chatted Annie saying, "Curacao is pretty." I eagerly waited for her turn on both swimsuit and gown segments, and she did not let me down. Her beauty is effortless.
Mexico is a good performer. I didn't like her gown, but she worked it and slayed.
Venezuela is Venezuela. You could see that she was well-trained, and she was not over-the-top or unauthentic. I'm not a fan of her gown or her gown performance, but she served.
Puerto Rico is gorgeous, but is prone to too much shoulder rolling, making her performance bordering theatrical. Also, she seemed like she came from the same "fierce Latina" cookie-cutter mold that most Latinas have been exhibiting in any pageant.
Middle Tier
These are the girls who are generally top contenders as well, but something's bugging me about them.
Tumblr media
Dominican Republic is hungry for it, and she might as well get it. Whenever she's on the stage, you can feel that she is happy with what she's doing. Sadly, I see her like a cookie-cutter candidate too.
Jamaica is oozing with confidence and she did great—however, something's iffy about her. I really want to see her in the finals.
Philippines has this easy, calm and relaxed demeanor about her that some people might think is underwhelming—it gets drowned out by those who are overdoing their pasarela. She did fine 'coz she just has this gandang di mo na kailangan pang ipilit, di tulad ng iba, todo awra para gumanda. And she was amazing in gown, otherwise I wouldn't be grinning from ear to ear. F*ck all the naysayers.
South Africa is good in both swim and gown, although her gown performance was a little subdued and I could feel her struggle with her form-fitting dress.
Colombia, although beautiful, may look too robotic sometimes. Like... she has mastered everything there is to do in the Miss Universe stage, it's so unreal. She can make it to the semis, but I don't see her winning.
Lower Tier
They did well on both swimsuit and gown, and if they get through to the finals, I won't question it. However, their chances of moving further in the competition is slimmer than those mentioned above.
Tumblr media
France is a consistent candidate, and my only concern with her is that she lacks the extra oomph that the other candidates possess.
Aruba is outstanding—honestly, one of the first girls who caught my attention. I just hope the judges noticed her too.
I really like Germany. When she came out, I was like, "Guuuurl, you are soooo pretty... and I'm glad you know what to do on that stage."
Bahrain... Screams diversity. She knows what she represents and she uses it to her advantage. Her gown is simple but unique—although not new in the pageant scene—but the way that she carried it with so much class and elegance... she deserves an applause.
I can feel that Cambodia worked hard for this and is eager to get a spot in the finals. I wish she could get in the Top 16.
They Might Get In
They weren't particularly bad—and they actually did well on some segments—but I'm not a fan. Somehow, gut feels tell me they'd make it to the semifinals.
Tumblr media
Wishlist
Seeing these girls on the stage made me smile, but they were outperformed by other candidates. I have big doubts on their chances of making the cut, but I'd be really happy if any of them would be called into the Top 16.
Tumblr media
Alternates: Australia, Panama, Honduras, Great Britain
General Thoughts during the Preliminary Competition
The stage isn't that bad. We've seen worse.
The program was boring. I mean, I know that it's gonna be, but nothing they did helped with toning down the boringness. And the background music during the swimsuit and evening gown competitions isn't exciting.
The girls weren't given enough time to showcase themselves. There's a freakin' catwalk on the stage, why the hell did they not utilize it???
In relation to the bullet point above, what's with the cape? I mean... okay, I get it. Customize it, whatever. Good idea. But it would've been better if the hosts were reading something about the cape, at least we'd know what's it about—instead of just viewing what it means on some app. They can still tell something about the girls during the evening gown, either way. And the girls were told to turn around and show their capes, therefore limiting their poses and movements. Their time was already shortened, and then they had to divide that time between showing themselves and the damn cape.
Too many nude, beige, silver, gold, bedazzled gowns.
Too many gowns with flowy appendages—and some girls didn't know what to do with them. This is the side effect of Ms. Paraguay and her mint-green flowy gown from last year where she won as 1st Runner-up.
Lots of "viva magenta" gowns too.
I'm a bit bothered by how Harnaaz pronounces the countries' names. I mean, she could've learned how to pronounce them properly beforehand.

Cultural Center of the Philippines: A Recap on its Roots
By: Adrienne Ocampo
Tumblr media
It is undeniably true that Marcos was highly influential in the establishment of public infrastructure, and with numerous roads, the CCP Complex is one of the structures built during his era that are continuously in use today.  On the other hand, Marcos' triumphs in public infrastructure came at a price. Many of Marcos' programs and projects were financially supported by external debt, having left the country with an estimated $28.3 billion in debt by 1986. These projects have also been widely popular for their high overspending, extravagance, and corruption.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) complex was designed and constructed on land taken from naval battles as a component of the Marcos administration's insistence on cultivating Filipino civilization and "the Filipino soul." It was completely designed by architect Leandro Locsin. It served as the venue for many artists' masterpieces.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), also referred to as the Sentrong Pangkultura ng Pilipinas, is found in Pasay, Metro Manila, on the reclaimed ground along Roxas Boulevard. the whole facility spans 88 hectares of land. It provides performance and exhibition spaces for both international and domestic performances. the power also accommodated a variety of union cultural events. The venues varied first from Miss Universe Pageant in 1974, which prompted the creation of the people Arts Theater, to the 1982 Manila International festival, which prompted the contentious Manila Film Center to be built. The Coconut Palace, also called Tahanang Pilipino, is similar because the Philippine International Convention Center is a part of the property.
As per the observations, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) structure had outstanding scenery and a green grass landscape, and most visitors appreciated the natural character of the placement. They likewise adored the mesmerizing glimpse that their eyes observed. Plus, the general public within the area is bicycling, others are playing, some are jogging, and a few are practicing something. People are just sitting nearby, taking in the breathtaking scenery. The stunning fountain is the highlight of the realm. It was absolutely enormous and spectacular, and other people appreciated its unique design and shape, which resembled a loop. The water within the fountain wasn't clear enough to determine reflections; it had a dark brown tone, and lots of fish swimming in it, some species of fish, which was enjoyable to determine. However, this grand infrastructure ultimately drained the government's finances because it was absolutely built with borrowed funds. Marcos got the complex's development with funds from the Cultural Development Fund, funds raised by Imelda, and loans from the globe Bank and therefore, international money. By 1972, the CCP has burdened with a debt of PhP 63 million from the theater's construction alone. Not soon after declaring the law, late former president Ferdinand Marcos enacted a bailout of the CCP, with the government usurping the center's financial liabilities. Was it worth it? It's hard to see its value when the towering debt is too much to ignore.

Miss Grand Philippines 2022 National Costume- U N A N G R E Y N A
This work of art was made to introduce contemporary audiences to the original Pinay beauty queen, who created a new prototype for the modern Filipina. It was a set of diverse elements that was part of her journey to be the first miss manila queen of carnival.
Purificacion Villanueva y Garcia was only 22 years old when she became the first ‘Queen of the Orient’ in the first Manila Carnival in 1908. This makes her the first Filipina beauty queen in our country.
And I am hoping that I will follow in Pura's footsteps and become the first Filipina to win the Miss Grand International competition and receive the golden crown.
