Background:
On May 1st, 2018, Tenants at 411 Brooklyn Ave reported to Equality for Flatbush that the Dept of Buildings had shut the elevator at their 6-story apartment building. There are many tenants, some of whom live on the top floors or have small children who will struggle with daily tasks like doing laundry, carrying packages, or groceries while the elevator is out. The last time the elevator was out, it was down for several months. Some elderly tenants were forced to move out temporarily from their apartments until the elevator was fixed.
When a tenant leader, simply called the Spera management office to find out how long the elevator would be out, she was appalled to learn that the manager was not at all concerned about the safety of the tenants but instead said, "tenants who reported the broken elevator to 311 are to blame for the inconvenience" . This is incredibly alarming given that The 411 Brooklyn Ave Tenants Association is currently engaged in a legal battle with for repairs against Mike and Steve Spera of ABBA Realty. Tenants have also reported over the last few days that water and other services have been turned off without being notified.

Equality for Flatbush obtained video taken in February of a rat infestation at 2100 Westbury Court owned by Mike and Steve Spera of #AbbaRealty . According to residents " Rats were walking up and down Westbury Court. They were coming from the back area where garbage cans are station and a closed area where the Super separates the garbage and recycleables. Young adults who live in the building and some who visit friends in 2100 Westbury Ct counted 150 rats around the building. They filmed the rat infestation, posted the video to news outlets. 311 was called and investigators came out and found piles of garbage behind the closed area. Two large dumpters filled with black garbage bags taken away. Tenants at 441 Brooklyn Ave are fighting to get their landlords, Mike and Steve Spera, to provide proper extermination services in their building. Tenants have reported to The 441 Brooklyn Avenue Tenant Association, that there is an ongoing mice, bedbug, and roach problem due to lack of consistent monthly extermination being provided building-wide. There are several photographs documenting mouse droppings and captured mice, along with other evidence of continued issues with rodents. Numerous tenants have complained about experiencing bedbugs.
Tenants are asking for two scheduled extermination dates per month, one on the weekend and one on a weekday to respect the religious and cultural diversity of the building. They are asking these demands be met by July 15th, 2018.
