Samedi 12 février 2023, l’acteur Jon Gries a défilé en tant que ‘mannequin surprise” durant la Fashion Week de New-York Autonome-Hiver, pour la marque de vêtements Eckhaus Latta, connue pour avoir des modèles représentatifs de la société globale, quels que soient l’âge, le sexe, la taille, la carnation.

L’acteur s’est vu proposer ce défilé par sa compagne, Meghan Roche, qui l’a mis en relation avec l’un des designers de la marque, qu’elle apprécie.

La fondatrice de Eckhaus Latta, Zoe Latta,  a commenté aussi. “We’re so touched he wanted to do it,” [...] “We were a little nervous that he would steal the show because he’s major.” [...]  “He’s a wonderful man but it’s not our normal thing to do a celebrity on the runway,” [...] “He just wanted to get into the modeling character.”

NYT : Why did you want to do this?
JG : I liked their brand. They’re independent, and I’ve always had pretty much an independent film career. I’ve been somewhat rogue, so it spoke to me. And also, look at the clothes — they speak for themselves [gesturing to his boots]. They really are great. It’s something I’d never done and something I wanted to try.
NYT : What direction were you given before you hit the runway?
JG : They said, “You’re walking down the streets of New York, and your mind is somewhere else.” And I said, “You mean like you’re listening to headphones?” And they said, “Exactly.”
NYT : So you’ve never done this before, but are you a fashion guy?
JG : Not really, no. I’m aware of it, but I buy old clothes. I wear only corduroy pants. But many, many years ago, I did a thing in Los Angeles magazine where I wore Prada. I remember putting on the pants, and they were lined, and they were so cozy. It was like, Oh, this is what first class is.
NYT : How have you felt about the reaction to the show? You were in the second season for only a few episodes, but you played a major sinister role.
JG : This is the beauty of Mike White [the show’s creator]. It’s also extremely subjective. This is what Tanya thinks. When Portia says to her, “Hey, something’s afloat.” Is it really?
OK: gun, rope, tape. Would they really need all that? All they’ve got to do is push her off the boat out in the ocean, and, “Oh, she fell overboard.” You know what I mean? Mike is so crafty, how he kind of leaves it open. Even when she’s doing the shooting, it’s from her perspective because we’re in her mind, and she thinks something’s up.
NYT : Are you going to be in the next season?
JG : That I don’t know, honestly. Mike White does what Mike White does. When he was writing Season 2, I got a text from him — that was how I found out. He said, Are you available? I said, Anytime, anywhere. He could be going back in time, you never know. There’s still a way to get Tanya in.

New York Fashion Week Ones to Watch: Eckhaus Latta
Eckhaus Latta was launched in 2011 by Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta who met at Rhode Island School of Design where Eckhaus was studying Sculpture and Latta was studing Textile Design.
With work experience including Three As Four, Proenza Schouler and Opening Ceremony, the pair presented their first collection in 2012.
They were finalists for the LVMH prize in 2018, and have collaborated with brands including Nike and Camper.

"This season there was a want for a certain kind of hardness,” Mike Eckhaus said. “There’s a kind of moodiness, not in a pessimistic way, but maybe on edge, an uneasy feeling that we are curious to play with,” Latta continued. This was a collection about protection, defiance, and most importantly, control, but as the show progressed, the color palette began shifting away from darkness.
Each season, Eckhaus Latta includes a poem or a text in their show notes. This season’s ended with “Be Fluidly Brutal and Find God.”

Leggett’s years working in food justice shaped the label’s design process.
Upcycling and reworking discarded garments felt like a natural choice, given the marked worldwide ecological impact of the fashion industry.
In altering these unwanted garments, Leggett dissociates them from gendered categories and creates an alternative space where both materials and identity are fluid.
The cultural and industrial norms that ground the fashion industry and our society are destabilized.

Founded by Chinese-Americans Ophelia Chen and Abi Lierheimer, this genderless and eco-friendly brand is full of exciting colors and prints, with boxy shapes that look good on anyone.
If you’re looking for entertainment, their blog reads like an excellent zine that touches fashion, art, race, and gender.
I love how the New York-designed, Shanghai-made Bobblehaus bridges East and West youth cultures.
Oversimplified, the brand is offering premium pieces across three key categories: “Classified Absurdity,” “Soft Masculinity,” and “Your New Comfort.”
Styles like ripstop nylon hook-ups, embroidered sweatsuits, and lounge-worthy Tencel sets are grounded in a neutral palette of navy, khaki, and grey, while doses of “Watermelon” pink, “Orchid” purple, and “Green Tea” punch up the vibrancy.
Great androgynous clothing brand; check out their relaxed plaid suits that round the collection with a polished moment.

I am impressed with the brand’s conscious approach to desire creating clothing that will be considered and purchased with care.
Manufacturing in California, the brand’s androgynous clothes are elegant and make for the perfect everyday uniform.

Founded by Pierre Davis in 2015, No-Sesso is a small Italian fashion brand operating out of Los Angeles.
Davis runs the business together with Autumn Randolph and Arin Hayes, aiming to create an androgynous clothing brand that challenges the conventions of fashion, art, culture, and design.
As a community-powered brand that empowers people of all colors, shapes, and identities, No Sesso’s garments are made of reconstructed materials and hand embroidery.
Making nonconformity as beautiful and inclusive as possible, No Sesso celebrates the community it serves with its collections, fashion presentations, parties, educational activities, and more.
However, I have found the brand’s offering quite limited, not only regarding the range of androgynous clothes.
There are less than ten products on the brand’s official website that you can choose from, which is a shame as there’s so much potential.
Overall, I love how the designers promote nonconformity through the lens of reconstructed knits and statement separates, all while serving and celebrating the gender-free community.

Powered by a non-binary gender identity, Cilium is a clothier with a philosophy that celebrates and explores innovation, transformability, and gender non-exclusivity.
Cilium’s conception sparked in 2009 with dear friends Tilly d Wolfe Lapidos and Thom Barranca.
As the founding designers began to question the concept of gender regarding clothing, they started making unisex, sustainable clothing under the brand name ‘TILLYandWILLIAM.’
However, in 2018, the duo decided to launch a new gender-free clothing label; Cilium, as the name of the old brand, wasn’t supposed to be about them but Cilium – a protective layer around cells.
Like Cilium, a membrane of ever-changing nature, the brand’s superb clothing pieces follow a constant transformative process.

What Clothes Are Androgynous?
The fun thing about wearing androgynous clothes is that there’s nothing wrong with them despite preconceived ideas.
In the past, women were vilified for wearing trousers; now, it’s the most normal thing you imagine.
Similarly, if a man puts a dress on, it won’t burst into flames; it’ll just look good.
Sadly, that’s taking such a long time for society to eliminate gender stereotypes and accept new fashion ideas.
The binary concept of clothing is outdated within the confines of an otherwise groundbreaking industry like fashion.
Queer and trans people of color have been subverting gender norms for decades.
As the line between “men’s” and “women’s” clothing styles fades away, the category of androgyny clothing gets harder to pin down.
By definition, the concept of androgynous fashion describes the middle of two extremes; once the edges come together, what does the middle describe?
In the past, it was easy to picture a selection of androgynous clothing (think structured suits, loose shirts, lots of jeans, men’s overalls).
On the other hand, modern androgyny pushes towards a panoply of interconnected yet distinct approaches to fashion.
Final Words On Androgynous Clothing
Finally, the mainstream media and designers are catching up, following high-profile celebs like Harry Styles wearing a gown or Billie Eilish sporting oversized streetwear brands.
Nonbinary runway models like Indya Moore – the first trans person of color to cover ELLE Magazine last year – represent a community that has been flouting gender rules all along.
It’s been a long time coming, but the fashion industry is finally taking a hint as brands are becoming more fluid, with runway shows using models of all genders to wear their clothes.
