This is something I love SO much about Kuro, and about Dunmeshi's portrayal of Bilingualism.

Like ... When we first meet Kuro it's so easy to assume he's a dummy. He's a big doofy-looking dog man that only talks about food, and his sentences are disjointed and broken, so you think oh, haha, token dumb character.

But then we swap to speaking Kobold and it hits you like a truck - Kuro is a person, and he has a full and complete train of thought that he can articulate. This is a grown ass man, and in his native language he speaks just as well as anybody - not only that, but here we see that Kabru, who is usually so good with words, speaks Kobold just as poorly as Kuro does common.

It's such an easy, obvious, and common trope to depict broken speech in a characters non-native language as a funny gag at the expense of their intelligence - not even just in fiction! Making fun of non-native English-speakers for their broken English is so fucking common and normalized - and here you have such a clear and simple portrayal that, no, in fact, Kuro isn't stupid.

And the thing is, common is common for a reason, right. In general high fantasy, "Common" means "Language that is effortless for everyone to speak". But in Dunmeshi, it's explicit that Kobolds can't fully learn Common - Common is designed for Humans, but Kobolds are demi-humans with different mouths and throats that don't allow them to enunciate in the same way.

And yet Kuro is doing his best to study it. He's going out of his way to master a skill most others don't even have to think about. Speaking of which ...

We get this exchange between him and Kabru, which I also wanted to focus on.

Because when we first see Kuro, then portrayed as a simple-minded dummy, it's easy to think that Mickbell is taking advantage of him and Kuro is unaware. Here, Kabru even assumes they can't truly be friends unless they speak the same language perfectly.

But that's not really the case - Mickbell isn't taking advantage of Kuro, not in the way we (and the rest of the party) assume - because Kuro isn't as stupid as we assume. He's thankful to Mickbell, he wants to repay him, and the food is a nice perk - but ultimately he cares about Mickbell enough to put this much effort into learning his native language (while Mickbell cares about him in his own way, though since Mickbell grew up without a family or friends, it usually just manifest in over protectiveness and a fear of losing him. His goal in life is to buy a house for them to live in together. Cmon.)

I think generalising Kuro and Mickbell's relationship as unhealthy (whether you perceive it as romantic or not) is doing a massive disservice to Kuro's intelligence due to his speech - something Kui goes out of the way to disprove.

kabru. although he’s all calm and collected, his room is messy as hell. you frequently scold him for it while helping him tidy it up. the landlord once heard you from upstairs and started to join in on the lecturing. kabru can only smile sheepishly and kiss the scowl on your face as you pick up the random clothes on his bedroom floor while he sweeps.

rin. when she’s off practicing spells in her own time, you peel and cut slices of fruit for her to eat when she takes a break from training. on afternoons you can find her in the fields, wand in hand, murmuring small incantations. you sit under the shade of a nearby tree with apple slices, berries, and her favorite dried fruit.

mickbell. he takes naps in the most random places, while he usually uses kuro as a pillow, you’re also one of his victims. sometimes he just craves to be soothed, and the way you pat and rub his back without making him feel stupid scratches an itch in him. don’t tell the others though, he’s defensive about showing his vulnerable side.

namari. whenever she comes back from a rough crawl through the dungeon, she usually goes to the tavern to relax and drink. but lately she’s been lessening her visits since you keep her at home to make her spare ribs. she sighs in content, happy and satisfied that she got to enjoy her favorite food made by her favorite person.

shuro. he’s easily stressed, sometimes even ignoring his own health and needs. you remind him to eat his meals and encourage him by pinching his ears and dragging him to the table. he’s a stubborn man, what do you expect? you basically have to force him to listen to his body’s needs and throw him into the nearest pool of water just to make him bathe. he thinks you’re scarier than maizuru because of this.

Do you have any crackships you really like?

aye i do and i actually would like to chat about them. I like the idea of Izutsumi X Laios. A Person who views themselves as an unattractive monster that nobody could find attractive being pared with a man who finds true beauty and connection in all things monstrous. It just screams angst and comfort and learning to love yourself for who you are, a right splendid ship.

Another One i could enjoy is Chilchuck X Namari. One is a person who cares about making sure people are being properly financially taken care of and treated right, the other being somebody who struggles with making sure they have enough money to survive and escape the stigma of their family. Both of them bonding and sharing drinks since they both love to drink so much, could be fun. Another one i particularly enjoy would be Kabru x Shuro. One of them is a man who is highly based on cultural norms and expectations and is incredibly repressed being with a person who is incredibly analytical and studies people. i feel like kabru could study and learn about shuro and what makes him tik and perhaps help him learn to not be as repressed and be open about things.

Another one being Mickbell and tade, ill admit this one is mostly fueled by the image of him sitting on her shoulders and seeming to be friendly with her. Who doesnt love a size difference ship to the extreme?

Though as ive said before i could make fun little ideas and delightful scenarios for any ship.

we as a society (dunmesh fandom) have to talk/discuss more about how Mickbell and Kuro are just reverse Mob and Reigen from MP100

#By that i mean #Mickbell acts like hes just an employer and Kuro is his employee #but Mickbell is like. thats his only family. and Kuro is staying with him #not just for food but because hes a ''good boss'' #except Mickbell even tho hes 22 and Kuro is 18 . the fact that kobolds seem to be this more "animalistic" race, with kuro talking in broken language and like improper grammar. this, coupled with the fact that he seems unaware of the fact that he's being exploited by mick, makes kobolds appear to be less intelligent than other races.

but we actually find out that the simple speech patterns are in fact due to common being kuro's second language. and in a scene where kabru talks to kuro in his native language, it's actually kabru with the simple speech patterns.

we even learn that kuro seems to actually have a much better understanding of his situation with mick than we first imagine. merely wanting to stay with them so they can have someone who they can feel relaxed around.

this, coupled with a bunch of other things, really makes dungeon meshi stand out from other fantasy media. there are no "dumb" or "evil" races, they're all just people.
