Friendship Evolves: M3GAN Review

This review is going to be a little different because I usually review the theatrical version of the movies I cover, but for todays review I’m going to be reviewing the Unrated version of M3GAN as that was the version that was going to go to theaters before it got toned down to a PG-13 rating. I’m so excited that they released this version of M3GAN so soon after making $171.2 million in the global box office. So, lets get straight to the spoiler-free review.

M3GAN is a 2023 science fiction horror film directed by Gerard Johnstone, Written by Akela Cooper (Malignant (2021)), Produced by James Wan (who also directed Malignant (2021),and Jason Blum. The soundtrack is done by Anthony Willis. The cast involves Allison Williams as Gemma, Violet McGraw as Cady, Ronny Chieng as David, Amie Donald as M3GAN, Jenna Davis as the voice of M3GAN, Brian Jordan Alvarez as Cole, Jen Van Epps as Tess, Stephane Garneau-Monten as Kurt, Lori Dungey as Celia, Amy Usherwood as Lydia, Jack Cassidy as Brandon, Michael Saccente as Greg, Samson Chan-Boon as Officer Carter, Kira Josephson as Ava, Renee Lyons as Holly, and Arlo Green as Ryan.

The Plot:

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by Gemma, a brilliant roboticist, M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as it plays the role of friend and teacher, playmate, and protector. When Gemma becomes the unexpected caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, she decides to give the girl an M3GAN prototype, a decision that leads to unimaginable consequences.

Positives:

One positive I have about the movie was the cast and the use of the character of M3GAN. An example of the use of M3GAN was the descent from a protective friend to an obsessive, psychotic, and cold-blooded killer…. who dances which had me laughing. I really liked the relationship of Cady and Gemma as they bond over time and how the bond they built pays off in the third act of the movie.

The second positive I have about the movie is how they nailed the tone; it is campy but at the same time it is scary as hell considering the technology we have now. It also discusses the dangers of technology while not being too preachy.

The third and final positive I have about the movie is the kills as it is bloody in the unrated version while kills in the PG-13 version happened offscreen and bloodless. The kills are pretty creative whether its with a power washer or a paper cutter, the movie (Unrated version) doesn’t hold back on the blood. While it’s not as bloody as “Terrifer 2” or the “Saw” franchise, some of the scenes are horrific.

Negatives:

The first negative I have about this movie is that I wish we spent a little bit more time with evil M3GAN. Evil M3GAN shows up at the halfway point of the movie, but that’s alright as it pays off. The second negative I have is some of the acting was questionable at some points, however it’s okay as it matches the campiness of the movie.

My overall thoughts:

After watching the unrated version of M3GAN, I believe releasing the unrated version a month after the PG-13 was released was a smart move considering the success of the PG-13 version. In saying that however, I believe this is the version that should have been released in theaters. If you are into killer doll movies or movies that deals with the dangers of artificial intelligence, then this is the movie for you. I found the movie to be really entertaining, darkly funny, and has rewatch value. I can’t wait until 2025 to see M3GAN 2.0

There are two kinds of horror fans in this world. There are the ones who see a spooky looking doll and hide their eyes in terror. Then there are those who see a little killer moppet with its chubby cheeks and little rubber hands and think this is kind of ridiculous.

I tend to be in the second camp.

M3GAN has been getting comparisons to the Child’s Play movies. And it is sort of like Child’s Play, except mostly it’s like the 2019 reboot of that franchise (you know, the one that everyone – particularly fans of the series – hated).

The title character in M3GAN is not a doll, exactly. Not like traditional spooky doll films like Annabelle, Trilogy of Terror and the original Child’s Play movies. M3GAN is more of a robot which is being marketed as a toy, just like Chucky in the Child’s Play reboot (M3GAN stands for “Model 3 Generative ANdroid – they can’t even do initials right, that should be M3GA.)

And while M3GAN is better than the Chucky reboot, it’s not really very good. However, it is stupid, but fun, which is all that many horror films aim for.

The thing is, though, M3GAN seems to be trying to aim higher. It makes some half-hearted explorations of grief, absentee parenting, and the dangers of AI, but mostly it’s about a little killer robot gone rogue. It’s a storyline variation which has been done hundreds of times now and M3GAN adds little to the canon.

There have been films about computers (and a robot is basically a variation of a computer) advancing beyond the programming that was intended even farther back than 2001: A Space Odyssey over 50 years ago. At least that movie, as weird as it sometimes got, had some deep ideas on the subject. Granted, it’s probably not fair to compare a silly horror film with a serious science fiction classic, but you get the point.

At least M3GAN, at like 4 feet tall is not quite as ridiculous a killer as a foot-tall Chucky, but still seeing this robot who weighs less than 100 pounds pummeling people twice her size seems a little silly.

I’m also not sure I totally buy that M3GAN could come to be every girl’s favorite new toy. Yes, it’s a technological marvel, but honestly, it’s kind of spooky, and not even when it is killing people, just in general. I could see little girls waking up under M3GAN’s glassy gaze and getting the crap scared out of them.

But okay, grading M3GAN on the level that it is made on, it’s not bad. It’s sometimes funny, sometimes intelligent, and sometimes a bit scary. So how you react to the film will probably pretty much depend on your feelings about homicidal dolls.

Harry Potter: le differenze tra libro e film che non hanno senso

Il lavoro di adattamento da testo scritto a immagine in movimento è spesso un lavoro insidioso e difficile, principalmente perché i due linguaggi sono differenti e molte cose che funzionano su carta non vanno bene su schermo, e viceversa. Per cui, nella saga di Harry Potter come in tante altre, è normale registrare dei cambiamenti tra i due prodotti.

Tuttavia, alcuni cambiamenti operati nella saga di Harry Potter in fase di trasposizione sono davvero senza spiegazione, intere scene o dettagli dai libri omessi o modificati in fase di sceneggiatura che potevano benissimo rimanere nel film senza per questo causare estreme lungaggini o cambiamenti di produzione, oltre ad aggiungere un tocco di fedeltà in più all’opera di partenza, qualità che è sempre apprezzata in un adattamento.

E così, ecco di seguito quei cambiamenti da libro a film, nella saga di Harry Potter, che non hanno alcun senso:

Pixie il Poltergeist

La decisione di tagliare il dispettoso Pixie il Poltergeist da Harry Potter e la Pietra Filosofale è stato accolto con sgomento da molti fan, che si chiedevano quali personaggi sarebbero rimasti fuori dall’adattamento. Pixie doveva apparire nel film, all’inizio, interpretato dal leggendario attore inglese Rik Mayall, ma fu poi eliminato al montaggio.

Il personaggio fu tagliato perché protagonista di scene non direttamente importanti per la trama del film, tuttavia, poteva essere un veicolo comico importante per il futuro, soprattutto nel quinto film, durante “l’attacco” alla scuola di Fred e George.

C.R.E.P.A.

In Harry Potter e il Calice di Fuoco, Hermione fonda l’organizzazione a difesa degli Elfi Domestici, il Comitato per la Riabilitazine degli Elfi Poveri e Abbruttiti o C.R.E.P.A.(in inglese Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, abbreviato S.P.E.W. ovvche vuol dire “vomita”). Il piano dell’associazione è quello di liberare tutti gli elfi dalla condizione di schiavi dei maghi. La fondazione di questa organizzazione è un ottimo modo per dare al lettore uno sguardo ravvicinato al carattere di Hermione, mostrando quanto la secchiona e saccente studentessa sia anche una persona gentile, appassionate e determinata.

Lasciando fuori questa parte della storia legata ad Hermione, gli spettatori dei film hanno perso una parte importante della caratterizzazione del personaggio. Naturalmente è una contrazione utile a semplificare una storia già complessa, tuttavia è un peccato perché in questo modo si perde un’occasione di conoscere davvero la strega più brillante della saga.

Rita Skeeter lo scarafaggio

Sempre in Harry Potter e il Calice di Fuoco, i fan fanno la conoscenza della reporter Rita Skeeter, una giornalista furba, viziosa, a volte addirittura disonesta, nota per aver cercato di provocare sensazionalismo con le sue storie. Il suo modo di acquisire informazioni sulle persone di cui scrive è però illegale, visto che si avvicina alle sue “vittime” in forma di scarafaggio. La Skeeter è infatti un animagus non registrato, commette così un grave reato. Come al solito, è Hermione a scoprire la verità sulla donna e usa questa informazioni per ricattarla, alla fine del libro.

Tuttavia, nell’adattamento cinematografico, non viene fuori nessun dettaglio sul personaggio, né che è un animagus, né che riesce ad acquisire informazioni con grande facilità. Il film fallisce nella rappresentazione del personaggio, tratteggiandolo con superficialità e relegandolo a un breve comprimario comico e fastidioso per i protagonisti.

I Malandrini

La Mappa del Malandrino viene data ad Harry da Frd e George in Harry Potter e il Prigioniero di Azkaban. La Mappa venne creata dai Malandrini Lunastorta, Codaliscia, Felpato e Ramoso, i nomi in codice per Remusi Lupin, Peter Minus, Sirius Black e James Potter. James, Peter e Sirius divennero animaghi non registrati per stare accanto a Remus nelle notti di luna piena, quando si trasformava in lupo mannaro.

I fan della serie di libri rimasero confusi quando i film solitamente fedeli non riuscirono a fornire una storia soddisfacente sui Malandrini e sulla loro connessione con Harry.

La profezia della Cooman

La profezia del professor Trelawney è stata la causa del fatto che Voldemort andò ad uccidere Harry a Godric’s Hollow, quando lui era solo un bambino. Piton sentì per caso parte della profezia e la riportò a Voldemort, che poi decise di uccidere Harry Potter.

Tuttavia, mentre in Harry Potter e l’Ordine della Fenice si leggono un sacco di retroscena riguardo alla profezia, l’adattamento cinematografico taglia la maggior parte della conversazione tra Harry e Silente e gran parte della motivazione di Voldemort a uccidere Harry non viene rivelata. Il film non spiega neanche perché Harry debba andare dai Dursley ogni estate e manca di dare le fondamentali spiegazioni per quello che riguarda i meccanismi su cui si fonda la magia di protezione di cui Harry beneficia. Rimane vero, però, che il quinto libro, in cui questi fatti sono spiegati, è stato quello che ha ricevuto il peggiore adattamento.

Il funerale di Silente

I fan avevano il cuore spezzato quando la Rowling decise di uccidere il vecchio saggio mentore del protagonista, alla fine di Harry Potter e il Principe Mezzosangue. L’”omicidio” di Silente da parte di Piton è stato un momento estremamente emozionante, poiché ha segnato la perdita di un’altra figura paterna per Harry. Nel film, i personaggi rendono omaggio a Silente alzando le bacchette al cielo, guidate da Harry stesso.

Tuttavia, nel libro, è descritto un grande funerale per Silente, a cui partecipano tutti, dagli elfi domestici dalle cucine di Hogwarts, al Ministro della Magia, dalle Sirene del lago Nero ai Centauri della Foresta Proibita. Il momento bello ed emozionante è stato un modo perfetto per dire addio all’amato personaggio. La scena è stata inclusa nella sceneggiatura ma non è stata girata, probabilmente a causa di vincoli di tempo e di budget.

Neville Paciock, il Prescelto

La profezia di Cooman diceva che il ragazzo che avrebbe sconfitto Voldemort sarebbe nato alla fine di luglio da genitori che lo avevano sfidato tre volte, e il Signore Oscuro pensò che tale profezia si riferisse ad Harry, perciò “lo segnò” con la sua maledizione. Tuttavia, la profezia avrebbe potuto indicare un altro ragazzo, Neville, poiché anche i suoi genitori avevano sfidato Voldemort tre volte, finendo non morti ma pazzi, e anche lui era nato alla fine di luglio.

L’adattamento cinematografico di Harry Potter e l’Ordine della Fenice, tuttavia, non menziona affatto questo dettaglio, e i fan sono rimasti a chiedersi perché l’importanza di Neville per la trama dell’intera saga sia stata tagliata in parte dai film.

La redenzione di Dudley

I Dursley sono stati i personaggi più antipatici della serie sin dall’inizio a causa della loro paura, sfiducia e odio per qualsiasi cosa legata alla magia e al modo in cui trattavano Harry, come fosse un animale domestico o un oggetto non desiderato. Ma quando Harry diventa maggiorenne e sta per lasciare la casa di Dursley in Harry Potter e i Doni della Morte, Dudley, in un momento sorprendentemente sentito, stringe la mano a Harry e lo ringrazia per avergli salvato la vita dai Dissennatori (accade all’inizio del quinto libro).

È un momento emozionante che il film ignora completamente, scegliendo invece di mandare via i Dursley fuori dallo schermo, rimanendo sul viso di Harry. La scena è stata effettivamente girata ma è stata rimossa durante il montaggio, forse a causa del minutaggio finale già lungo.

La storia di Tom Riddle

Grazie ai ricordi di vari personaggi, Harry (e i lettori) apprendono cose davvero interessanti sul passato di Tom Riddle, incluso perché e come ha realizzato gli Horcrux che lo proteggono dalla morte. In Harry Potter e il Principe Mezzosangue ci sono molti capitoli che esplorano le origini e la storia della famiglia di Voldemort.

L’adattamento cinematografico mostra solo due ricordi: il primo incontro di Silente con il giovane Tom Riddle e il ricordo di Lumacorno, sia nella sua versione corretta che in quella integrale. Gran parte della storia di Voldemort, in particolare quella su suo padre, Tom Riddle Sr. e sua madre, Merope Gaunt, viene omessa. Le necessità di rientrare in un certo minutaggio, per il film, potrebbero essere una giustificazione, tuttavia, come nel caso di C.R.E.P.A., si perdono moltissimi dettagli sulla natura dei personaggi.

Silente chiese con calma…?

Uno dei cambiamenti più assurdi e decisamente ridicoli in Harry Potter e il Calice di Fuoco riguarda una battuta precisa pronunciata da Silente in persona: “Harry, hai messo il tuo nome nel Calice di Fuoco?”. Il libro dice chiaramente che Silente lo chiede “con calma”, ma Sir Michael Gambon nell’adattamento cinematografico ha restituito un Silente arrabbiato e furioso, quasi, che afferra aggressivamente il ragazzo per le spalle e quasi gli urla in faccia la battuta, un atteggiamento che non è nemmeno lontanamente vicino al modo di fare di Silente.

Questo comportamento è molto diverso da ciò che invece Silente fa, il Preside è infatti sempre molto simpatico, composto e controllato.
