hii! so i recently watched Lola Igna on Netflix because i was kinda curious about this film.

Lola Igna is a movie about a 118 year old woman and her life that’s full of surprises. the story starts with Lola Igna (Angie Ferro) being nominated as the ‘Oldest Grandmother in the World’ which gained their Barrio a lot of attention from the internet and tourists swarming outside Lola Igna’s house every morning.

during this, Lola Igna comes across her great, great grandchild named Tim (Yves Flores) who’s the son of her great grandchild, Ana (Meryll Soriano) that she hasn’t seen in a long time. during Tim’s stay at Lola Igna house, the two form a loving bond that a grandmother has with their grandchild, with Tim documenting his stay at Lola Igna’s house and their everyday activities.

unfortunately, the movie ends with Lola Igna not being nominated for an award, which ended up with someone a few years older from Georgia. personally, it was a relief that Lola Igna didn’t win the award, we can see that from her answer to Tim’s question, “Masaya ako dahil makikita kong masaya si Nida,” (I’ll be happy about the award because Nida wanted the award for me and she’ll be happy if I win) which made me think that Nida (Maria Isabel Flores) was kind of selfish for putting her grandmother in that kind of position, since the Mayor claims that the winner will receive $50,000 dollars each year. i also thought it was very selfish of her to put up merch of Lola Igna after tourists start visiting Lola Igna’s house for selfies and interviews, which eventually caused her to fall into a coma.

during those parts, it made me think how people could be so selfish. Nida wanted Lola Igna to wake up for the sake of the award. if i were to have grandchildren someday, i wish to have grandchildren that are selfless and wouldn’t use a relatives’ weakness for their own advantage.

i also sympathize a lot with Tim’s character. from my perspective, he thought about leaving home because he thought he didn’t belong there after his mother gets pregnant with his step-father’s child, thinking that maybe living with Lola Igna for a short while will fill the void that he has back home.

this movie actually made me miss my grandmother a lot and wish i could’ve done more so i could remember more memories of us. for me, this movie leaves us the message of taking the time to bond with our relatives (if you’re in good terms, of course) because life is actually too short.

this movie also shows that living for a long time isn’t actually all fun and enjoyable. the people we love and care for will all go before us, which eventually leaves us alone. even though life can be full of surprises, there will be times where we can’t help but think, “I wonder what would happen if * was here,” or “** would probably enjoy this.”

in conclusion, this movie was both happy and sad for me. happy that Lola Igna somehow managed to get her family back together and sad because it really made me miss my grandmother a lot, which also led me to thinking about what would i do if i was given a very long life. dang, i would probably be so lonely.
