GALLERY: The Aces
Tumblr media
by Alycee Byrd
“On tour, shows sometimes start to feel the same....this might sound crazy, but I think Charlotte is the best show this far on the tour.” The crowd was electric last Friday night during The Aces' show at The Underground. This Charlotte, NC, stop was the 8th show on their U.S leg of their I’ve Loved You For So Long (ILYFSL) Tour. The four piece band performed songs from all parts of their discography, dating all the way back to 2018. The show setlist ranged from high energy pop hits like “Daydream,” to alternative ballads like “Suburban Blues,” which touches on their experience of navigating their queerness while living in a small town in Utah. You could feel the passion and emotional impact the band has on their fans while looking through the faces in the crowd. Their music truly touches a wide demographic of people from all different ages, races, and gender identities. Their shows are a space where you can come as your authentic self. If you have an opportunity to catch a show in your city, I would highly recommend seeing and support this all-woman group who truly puts their heart into their music and performances. Check out our highlights from the show below!

How to Have Sex: Review
The least Googlable film ever
Tumblr media
From the smudged fake tan to the early morning puking rituals, you know what you’re getting with a party island holiday. But what often isn’t talked about is the undercurrent of peer pressure and uncomfortable sexual encounters lurking just beneath the surface. From first-time director Molly Manning Walker (cinematographer of the wonderful Scrapper), How to Have Sex artfully explores the seedy side of party holidays, with scenes that you’ll think about for days to come.
Like with any holiday, our protagonists start the film in super high spirits. We follow British teenager Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce), who joins best friends Skye (Lara Peake, the loud one), and Em (Enva Lewis, the compassionate one) as they head to Malia to party after their exams. While they all give it large about the sexual adventures they’ll get up to (if they can convince people they aren’t 16), the pressure is on for Tara, who is yet to lose her virginity.
Within seconds of this coming-of-age film, what stands out about How to Have Sex is how true to life everything feels. This is an environment that feels instantly recognisable - you can practically smell the sweat and sambucas. Drawing on her own holiday experiences, Manning Walker’s script uses dialogue that feels plucked straight from the Malia strip (right down to the girls’ love of cheesy chips), resulting in a convincing portrayal of female friendships. It helps that the cast play off each other so naturally, with a giddy energy and humour that might make you long for non-stop days of partying with your besties.
Well, almost. For while the opening revels in the joys of girls’ holidays, the second half takes a darker turn. As the group fall in with a trio of flirty lads next door, this gives rise to petty jealousies, peer pressure, and a few very triggering sexual encounters. It might all be vibrant visuals and lively party anthems, but cinematographer Nicolas Canniccioni frames the night scenes like a nightmare in neon, and you feel the sense of dread when Tara ends up wandering the lurid nightclubs alone.
When a pivotal moment comes at the halfway point, Manning Walker doesn’t shy away from the traumatising nature of sexual assault, and does a sensitive job of exploring the complex nature of consent. She’s aided by a marvelous debut performance from McKenna-Bruce, who manages to be both bubbly and full of life, while displaying a devastating sense of vulnerability. You might think you know what you’re getting from this party island holiday, but you’ll walk away with plenty more food for thought.
With star-making debuts from Manning Walker and McKenna-Bruce, How to Have Sex is a remarkable and sobering film about the meaning of consent. You’ll never think of party holidays the same way again.

I started reading Regarding the Duke from your posts and wow I'm really loving this, I giggled when Adam threatened Parnell to make sure that Gabriella's dance card would be full, except for the waltzes, which are his :D do you have other HR recs where the hero marries for revenge/vengeance before falling in love?
Adam Garrity: sadly I cannot love
Also Adam Garrity 2 seconds after meeting this woman: he was MEAN to you?????
(Fun fact: the concept of a romance hero going "they were MEAN to you?" before doing something ridiculously petty and OTT and/or violent is encoded into my brain, as that is in fact one of my favorite moments in Pretty Woman.)
The Prince of Broadway by Joanna Shupe comes to mind. It's not a MARRIAGE for revenge as much as a SEDUCTION for revenge, but the emotional fallout is pretty much the same. And Florence isn't a marriage type of girl anyway, so falling in love was pretty much on that level for her. This has one of my favorite "hero realizes he has in fact played himself" moments.
A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean. CLASSIC revenge marriage situation. Bourne and Penelope were childhood friends; then he lost his entire estate/inheritance in a game of chance. The family home ended up in as a part of Penelope's dowry (her dad didn't win it from him, it got passed around basically). So Bourne basically seduces her and forces her to marry him as a part of his long game, which involves getting all the stuff he lost while exacting revenge. It's hot.
Beyond Scandal and Desire by Lorraine Heath--another seduction vs. marriage situation, but effectively the same as Mick is basically seducing Aslyn as a part of his long-term plan to get revenge on his father (Mick is illegitimate and Aslyn is engaged to his legitimate younger brother).
Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas is again more seduction by revenge (seduction is kind of easier for revenge, as often, the idea is ruination) but it's worth it imo in part because it's just an excellent book... McKenna and Aline fell in love as teenagers, but her dad forced her to do the whole "I don't love you" thing while sending him away. He ended up having to make it on his own and became self-made, and he comes back with the intention of seducing Aline and destroying her life, basically lmao. He's kinda demented tbh. He's like "AND THEN I'M GONNA GET HER PREGNANT. AND IT'S GONNA BE SUCH GOOD REVENGE." Like okay dude you're lowkey planning a life with her but whatevs
The Madness of Viscount Atherbourne by Elisa Braden IS a straight up revenge by marriage book. Atherbourne is mad because the heroine's brother (a hero I love even more) killed his brother in a duel (and he did it like he did everything else--EFFICIENTLY) so he compromises the heroine on a balcony (in an insanely graphic way) so that she has to marry him. Great times.
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale. Allegreto forces Elayne/Elena to marry him (the consummation is also forced, as a heads up, though I still encourage people to give this book a shot if they're open to it--it's a very psychologically interesting scene that I think is hard to explain without you just reading it) in what is in some ways a long game political "the same thing we do every day--TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD" scheme, and in some ways a revenge plot to take back what is his (is it tho), etc etc. In what is one of my favorite things, the villain hero takes the heroine captive and realizes that oh! She's kind of a nightmare!

January 15th, 2022
It was complicated. Not so much between you and Billy anymore. Figuring stuff out with him became way easier. More of it was with Steve. He hadn’t said a word to you since you and Billy started spending more time with each other. Over 2 months ago. While you admired his level of pettiness, you were irritated and sad. You missed your friend. You thought that he would've at least asked you to hangout over winter break or called you to say “Merry Christmas.” But alas, you go nothing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were currently in your English class. Eddie sat right next to you which meant it was almost impossible to get anything done. Once a conversation sprung up he would not let it go.
“Has Steve spoken to you at all?” Eddie questioned.
“No. I didn’t even do anything. He even walks away when I try to come and talk to you and Robin.” You answered.
Eddie looked out the window that was right next to his desk. “Maybe it has to deal with Billy and not so much you. He told us that they also haven’t spoken since they fought at the basketball game.”
“How is that my fault though? He needs to take it up with Billy instead of taking it out on me.” You couldn’t wrap your head around it. In all honesty, you thought it was stupid that instead of being the bigger person and mature, Steve had decided to handle this like he was in 7th grade again. Dumb and irrational. But, you didn’t want to lose one of the closest friends you made ever since moving to Hawkins. “Is he at school today?”
“I mean, he’s skipping math right now. But if you catch him during passing period I say you try to talk with him.” Eddie suggested. It was one of his few ideas where he didn’t sound completely brain-dead.
Class went on per usual. You were so focused on what you were gonna say to Steve that you barely got halfway through the worksheet your teacher handed out. You told yourself you would do it later as “homework.” Class ended and you made your way out of the door. Scouting the hallways for Steve. Your eyes wandered back and forth until you spotted him coming out of the boys bathroom. You rushed over to him through the crowd of teens and began to walk with him. It was convenient that the two of you had classes in the same direction.
As you joined him, he looked to the side and exhaled, giving off a “Why are they here” look.
“Hey Steve.”
“Hi.” He responded flatly. You ignored the shitty tone in his voice and continued the conversation.
“Listen, I don’t know why you won’t speak to me but it sucks. I miss us being close. Can you just tell me why you’re mad?” You questioned. Steve laughed. You were puzzled. How could he be laughing when you were trying to fix the strain between the both of you? “Asshole” you thought.
“I’m not gonna have this conversation with you right now. Especially in front of all these people. The fact that you don’t even have a clue about the reason I’m pissed when it’s right in front of your face is insane.” He walked away, leaving you in a state of irritation and confusion. If you really felt like it, you could breakdown and cry in front of the entire student body. Right in front of you face... No matter how many times you thought about it, It never made sense.
The rest of the day went by in a blur. You were barely able to concentrate during your 7th period. What Steve said never left your mind. It was eating you alive.
You found yourself at your locker getting whatever you needed for 8th period. Billy immediately found you and walked over to you. He noticed the miserable look that hadn’t left your face since the confrontation with Steve.
“Woah, you look like shit.” He said smirking to you. You turned to him, no form of amusement on your face. Billy backed off once he figured out something was up. “My bad. What’s wrong gorgeous?”
“It’s Steve. I tried asking him about why he hasn’t been talking to me and he made a fool out of me. He basically told me to fuck off and that I don’t have a clue.” You said in a defeated tone. A response didn’t follow your sentence. Just quiet yet aggressive breaths. You didn’t even wanna look Billy face to face because you knew what you would be met with. The look. The look that read “I’m gonna beat someone’s ass.”
“Go to class. I have shit I need to do.” Billy said, no emotion to his tone.
“What shit?” You questioned.
Billy began to walk towards the direction of the doors that led to the parking lot. “You’ll see.” You knew you wouldn’t be able to stop Billy. It sucked. His answer to everything was fighting.
8th period was miserable. It was like you couldn’t catch a break today. Whatever was in the air had everything falling apart for only you it seemed.
The bell that signaled the end of the day rang and you sluggishly made your way out of the classroom. You were trying to occupy as much time as possible moving from your locker and then to your car outside. Anything to miss Billy beat Steve’s ass again. You knew he was gonna do it and you knew nothing you did or say was gonna change his mind. Putting away everything that you didn’t need from your locker, you grabbed your backpack and went to the direction of the parking lot.
As you opened the exit doors, Billy was already on top of Steve, landing punch after punch. Blood had already began to leak out of Steve’s nose. Billy wasn’t going to stop anytime soon. This fight was different. Steve wasn’t fighting back like last time. He was defenseless on the ground taking hit after hit. Billy must’ve caught him by surprise. Everyone gathered around shared looks of worry and entertainment.
Soon enough, a few teachers came by to break up the fight. Billy looked proud of himself, smirking at what he did to Steve. Harrington laid there for a second then sat up. Tears beginning to flow out of his eyes. Though, they weren’t too visible under the forming bruises and blood. The two boys were ordered to the office and you followed behind. Once you entered the school, you went off.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” You said, almost yelling at Billy. Steve turned around. He wasn’t aware that you were following the two of them.
“Don’t tell me you’re actually about to defend this shit head.” Billy responded, side eyeing Steve.
“I might as well. Your answer to everything is picking a fight with someone.”
Billy rolled his eyes. He had no idea why you were mad at him. In his eyes, he was defending you.
“I still don’t understand why the fuck you’re so mad. After you told me what Steve did to you, I did something about it. Got rid of the problem.” Billy explained.
“Wait, you told him about what I told you?” Steve chimed in, getting visibly irritated. “So you caused all of this..”
“I didn’t expect Billy to go and beat your ass. How was I supposed to know what he was gonna do?”
“Well maybe if you actually took a look at what you were doing wrong instead of running your mouth we wouldn’t be stuck in this situation.” All three of you were irate.
“Watch your mouth Harrington.” Billy said, stepping up to Steve.
“Or what?”
You immediately got in between the two boys. You were so stressed it was hard to have one coherent thought.
“The both of you are so fucking stupid it blows my mind. I’m going home.” You said shifting your tone from expressive to emotionless. Billy knew you didn’t mean that, but it still stung regardless.
Hours later~
Billy didn’t get home till at least 5pm. He was already aware that the school called Neil and was aware of his suspension. He wasn’t aware of how Neil was gonna react. Billy was scared. He knew how his father was when he was angry. Billy had gotten in trouble plenty of time at school. Never suspended though. The chance of death was at least 50%. Billy hesitantly opened up the front door of his house and was met with the beast himself. Neil Hargrove. His eyes were dark and his face, still.
“Your school called me. You’re suspended” Was all the grown man said. This time, Billy couldn’t think of a sly remark. He was petrified of Neil. No matter how hard he tried to suppress it.
“I know but I can explain-.” Billy stopped speaking once Neil got closer to him. There was a moment of silent. Billy tried keeping his composure as best as he could but couldn’t keep his hands from trembling. A sudden punch from Neil hit Billy right in the left side of his face. The sudden nature of the hit caused Billy to hit the floor.
“You wanna punch people at school? Well then you’re gonna fucking get it at home.” Neil Spoke, aggressiveness being added to his tone. Billy didn’t make a sound. The tears that began to flow out of Billy’s eyes were enough to Neil. He knew he put his son in his place.
“Get the fuck out of my house. I don’t wanna see you for the rest of the night.” Billy got up and stormed out of the house and to his car, tears continuing to stream out of his eyes. He knew where he could go when he needed someone. It was you. He started his car and immediately began his commute to your house.
It only took him about 15 minutes until he reached your home. He parked in front of your lawn and made his way up to the front door. He rung the doorbell. Billy was praying that you would be the one to answer. He really didn’t wanna have to explain the bruise on his face to anyone else. To his relief it was in fact you who answered his call.
“Billy?” You stopped and immediately noticed his left cheek. “Again? I told you-”
“It was Neil.” Billy had cut you off. Your heart sunk. You knew about his father’s temper but, never knew the extent of it.
“Oh my god. Billy get in here.” You ushered him inside and immediately took him to the bathroom. Leaning him up against the counter, you got out the first aid kit that was placed under the sink and began to work at his bruise. “What even happened?”
“The school called Neil and told him about the fight and about me being suspended.” Billy explained. “I could tell he was pissed as soon as I walked in the house. Then he just... hit me.” Billy looked down. He wish he could’ve avoided all of this. “Y/N I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have went and did all of this.”
“Billy I forgive you. Neil’s temper isn’t your fault.” You said as you began to clean up his face.
“Also, I don’t wanna add to all of this but.. I was kicked out for the night. I need somewhere to stay.”
You smiled at the boy. “Yes of course.”
Eventually, you got Billy’s face clean, got him a change of clothes, and cared for him the rest of the night. He had a short temper and a fighter mentality, but you always knew he cared for you.
Persuasion 2022 Movie Review
Tumblr media
Eight years after Anne Elliot was persuaded not to marry a dashing man of humble origins, they meet again. Will she seize her second chance at true love?
If this film didn’t purport to be based on Jane Austen’s Persuasion, then perhaps I could have enjoyed it. Yet it was not to be, and so I somehow made my way through this trash heap of a film that bears very little resemblance to the book apart from some overarching plot points. Almost none of the characters were anything like their book counterparts, excepting perhaps Richard E. Grant as Sir Walter Elliot and Mia McKenna-Bruce as Mary Musgrove. Mia in particular was an incredible Mary and really brought her character to life. She is the one aspect of the film I truly appreciated.
Only a few minutes in, and all of the snide comments and fourth wall breaking were both off-putting and disconcerting. It was such an unnecessary addition to the narrative, in an attempt to make Anne quirky and witty, when in reality she just came across as mean and selfish. Not to mention this is far from the Anne Elliot we know and love. This Anne lacks all of the sensitivity and kindness of the original, which is such an important aspect of the novel and in finding love with Wentworth again. There is none of the maturity or selflessness of book Anne. She’s a complete mess – she is not at all dignified in her loss and sorrow. She’s overly jealous and genuinely crass and embarrassing. She clearly says and does things to hurt others.
There were many moments that created so much secondhand embarrassment and were completely unnecessary and not in the book at all. Again, they were used to construct a very different version of Anne – a version that does not work. The tone of the film is just completely wrong for an Austen period piece, as is the language which is way too modern. The manners and decorum are not in fitting with the time; there is not only too much one on one conversation between Anne and Wentworth, there is clearly a desire to sex up Austen with the interactions between Anne and Mr Elliot. As much as I love Henry Golding, this Mr Elliot is overplayed and too obviously a bad guy, not to mention all of the explicit flirting going on. That was completely overboard for Austen.
So much of the feelings that unfold naturally in the book are overtly stated through exposition in this film, and it completely ruins the developing relationship between Anne and Wentworth. We shouldn’t be so certain of his feelings, and Anne shouldn’t be holding onto so much hope for so much of the film, and early on even. This film lacks the same tension and longing that makes the book what it is, and reduces their interactions from the original pining to often petty jealousy and completely boring conversations.
All that being said, there’s not much I can say about Persuasion 2022 that I actually enjoyed. They ruined both the plot and the characters, rendering all of Austen’s beautiful work into a poorly conceived narrative that really doesn’t bring much to the table, and is certain to frustrate the Austen lover. Even those unfamiliar with Austen in general or Persuasion specifically are likely to find the attempt to combine the period piece and modern to be somewhat distasteful. All in all, it’s a generally unsatisfying film.
What are your other favorite Arrowverse ships if you have any?
Hmmm… good question.
I guess Canarrow is a given by now, lol. Not going into detail here now why.
I really liked Roy and Thea, I think they were a good fit and helped each other grow and move out of their comfort zones and the lives they knew and with that changed their outlook on what their lives are going to be like because of the environment they grew up in. Roy learnt that he could be more than a petty thief and that if someone like Thea Queen not only believed in him but actually loved him, other people might give him a chance too and see him for who he is, not the circumstances he grew up in and that shaped him into who he was at the beginning. She gave him a chance and with that pushed him towards believing in himself and that he could be more than what everyone thought and always told him. He didn’t need to be stuck in the situation he was in at the start of the show.
And Roy in return taught Thea to look beyond a person’s first appearance, to understand what less fortunate circumstances could lead to and the path someone could be pushed into simply by circumstances and desperation. Roy also pushed her to be more than the spoiled trust fund princess that she was or pretended to be at the beginning of the show, he helped her grow up and look passed her own wants and needs.
They were good for each other and in their case the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks and the spoiled rich girl actually worked very well, their relationship was very realistically portrayed in my opinion and that made me root for them.
Moira and Walter were also a couple a got attached to. And I was really sad when they broke them up, even though I completely understand Walter’s reasons and support his choice. Their story was also very relatable and I loved how positive Walter’s presence in the Queen women’s life was portrayed. Stepparents get a bad rep on TV or in movies way too often and that saddens me, because I grew up with at stepdad and he’s the best. I was around the same age as Thea was when my dad died which led to me having a lot more patience and understanding with Thea’s behavior than most of the fandom. I guess I could relate. So, yeah, Moira and Walter have a special place in my heart because Moira got a second chance at love and some happiness after losing her husband and son in such a tragic way.
I also very much wanted Laurel and Tommy to end up together, those two were so great together and brought out the best in each other. They were a much better fit than Oliver and Laurel in my opinion. They had their issues but I feel they could’ve worked passed those had Tommy lived, Laurel just needed to put Oliver in the past once and for all were romance was concerned.
I also like Oliver with Helena or McKenna, Sara is my all time favorite but I could’ve easily seen either of those relationships work out in a positive way, once they’d dealt with some issues. McKenna would’ve been very interesting given she was on the Hood Taskforce and her learning her boyfriend was who she’d been hunting for months would’ve made for some great storytelling, plus given her character I could’ve easily seen her becoming Oliver’s inside person at the SCPD.
Helena was a great character too and I felt her and Oliver’s involvement was very rushed, I would’ve loved for them to stretch it and make her turn on him all the more impactful. They could’ve even brought her back later on reformed and have them fall back into each other and a relationship, and have her become the Arrow’s partner in the field.
Both Helena and McKenna had a lot of potential that was never really developed and their storylines felt very rushed, unfortunately.
Lyla and John are also a couple I like, even though they do have some serious issues… but still, I think in they work very well together and they have great chemistry and are a lot of fun.
I think those are the major ones, it is possible I missed some that I enjoyed. I guess Quentin and Donna were pretty great together too and Felicity and Ray had a lot of potential too and would’ve been the better fit than Oliver and Felicity.
Thank you for your question I hope I answered it to your satisfaction, otherwise just let me know and I elaborate some more, lol.
I hope you have a great day.
