Dutch Elephants

In May I was due to go cycling in Belgium, which we re-arranged for this half term. I love cycling in Northern Europe because the cycling infrastructure is so much better and drivers far more understanding of cyclists than in the UK. However, given the need to quarantine on my return and the further restrictions announced this week, I very much doubt we will be going.

Luckily there are some lovely places to cycle around Coventry. During lockdown, I sometimes cycled into school, which involved tackling the ‘Maxstoke Mountain’. If you live in the Meriden Gap, you will know what I am talking about! A network of safe cycling routes is being developed in the Midlands and Bablake will be at the centre of this development as Coventry’s first segregated cycleway is built along Coundon Road. This dedicated path will go from Norman Place Road (near the entrance to our synthetic turf pitches) to the ring road. Construction will start next month and at first the Council will be concentrating on the northern section near our playing fields. The section near the School will not start being built until next spring. There will be some disruption during the building work, however the Council are working with us to keep this as a minimum. We are also discussing with them how vehicle, cycle and pedestrian traffic will be managed near our gates, which is a great opportunity to improve safety for all in this area.

In my meetings with the Council, I have come across two descriptions of things we see in the built environment that originate in the Netherlands. The first describes something that will be put in place near to the entrance to our pavilion – a ‘Dutch entrance’. This is where a road crosses a pavement and/or a cycle path with a raised section that means cyclists and pedestrians have priority and do not have to step down onto the road.

The second is an “elephant path” or in Dutch, “olifantenpad”, which is a name for a path that is formed by people making their own paths and shortcuts; it is an unofficial route and is usually considered a failure in planning. We have our own version on site as the zebra crossing outside the Sixth Form centre does not quite follow the path that most wish to take at the end of the day.

I appreciate that many pupils and staff live too far from the School to consider cycling and, especially for younger pupils, the traffic in Coventry makes it too dangerous. However, I hope that once the cycleway is finished, those who live closer to the School will be able to make use of the facility. Cycling is a great way to keep fit and reduce our environmental impact. 

I wrote the above on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday morning a L6 student cycling outside the school gates was hit by a car, which then drove off. There were some witnesses and the Police are involved. A further reminder, is one was needed, for safer infrastructure on Coundon Road. The pupil involved was very lucky and is not badly hurt; it could have been much worse.

Outdoor Education

Since March, no school across the UK has been able to run residential school trips and the situation is likely to continue for many more months. This means that most residential centres have been unable to open for over six months and there is no end in sight. Having previously worked in the industry, I strongly believe in the importance of the activities that they provide for children and schools. A Bablake pupil commenting on what one of our outdoor adventure trips had taught them said, “I am stronger and braver than I thought and if I just try then it can be amazing.” 

To try and offer something within the current guidelines, we are planning on running some weekend day trips this term to give pupils an opportunity to experience some paddling, climbing or walking. More to follow soon.

Coronavirus Diaries: Maxstoke Social

Monday 18th May 2020

Bike ride with friend and neighbour Adrian today. My first ‘social’ ride since the lockdown started. Keeping as socially distant as possible, we managed twenty-odd miles in the sunshine and into Warwickshire. Rode a little harder than of late, but my efforts were somewhat thwarted by an irritating headwind for much of the ride.

In the evening, my weekly Skype call with A, C, and P, the ‘Last of the Summer Whiners’. The usual gardening update from A, and then into our usual exchanges on coronavirus and the politics surrounding it. Quite animated tonight and the call went on for over two and a half hours. Included was some history lessons the American Civil War, and the German advance into Soviet territory in the early years of the Second World War. Like all of our weekly calls, it was an education. Long may they continue.
