McRory Land
Tybee Island, Georgia
Time Read: 9:09 am
“Good morning Angels,” Maverick joked as he met the gang outside of the run down looking garage.
“Good morning Charlie,” they all replied collectively without missing a beat.
“You all seem to be enjoying furlough, however with furlough, often comes a dilema,” he explained. “Said dilema involves pilots being on long furlough and then returning to the field ill prepared for training exercise. So today we have a little special something planned to help us get back in the swing of things when it’s time to go home.”
Everyone looked at each other, a little perturbed, a little bit curious and a little apprehensive all at the same time. With Maverick, the unexpected was always to be expected.
“We’ll be doing an exercise this morning that our hosts like to call ‘Four-Wheel Dogfighting’,” Maverick explained further. “You’ll each team up with your wingman or wingwoman and ride the marked course through the marsh. One man drives while the wingman or wingwoman collects the checkered flags on the sides of the path. Whoever collects their flags and makes it back to the house first is deemed the winner. Gretchen’s grandparents will be watching the GPS tracker from the porch. Aunt Karen and Uncle Rainy will be following behind in case someone needs first aid. We ready?!”
“READY SIR!” everyone replied eagerly.
“Alright guys,” Maverick said as he placed his helmet firmly on his head. “Let’s get to it. Penny, you’re with me. Care to do the honors?”
“I’d be insulted if you didn’t let me,” she chuckled, handing him the keys to the four wheeled ATV.
Everyone readied themselves, each one fitting their helmets to their heads with their call signs grazing the forefront. A huge grin crawled across Hangman’s face when he saw the word “Apache”, Gretchen’s call sign in the aptly named Top Gun Family, printed across her black helmet in bright pink letters.
“Hey babes?” he asked, the motors of the other ATVS loudly starting.
“Yes Jakey?”
“Remind me again why your family call sign is ‘Apache’?”
“You’ll find out in about two seconds,” Gretchen chuckled.
With a rev of the motor and a billow of dust, Maverick and Penny were the first ones off with Rooster and Rusty following close behind. Phoenix and her husband, Cole “Bullfrog” Rossington, shot off onto the trail with Bob and Moira following in their wake. Hangman revved the engine and kicked up a huge billow of dust, clouding any view of Payback and Aasha, Fanboy and Jewel and Coyote and Raquel who were the last three teams to follow them. Gretchen let out a thundering rebel yell that would have shook every tree in the marsh, her arms wrapped tight around Hangman’s waist and her long, dark ponytail flying behind her.
Off they went along the muddy trail, the engines roaring like the jets they flew, the mud and swamp water sloshing and flying beneath their wheels, cutting through the cattails and tall grasses. It was a hell of a ride that no one wanted to miss.
“Rooster!! Rooster c’mon he’s gonna get the first one!” Rusty shouted.
“I see’em!!” Rooster answered.
They were neck and neck with Maverick and Penny, barely a space between them and the wheels dangerously close. Rusty leaned over the side, one arm still holding fast to her husband and the other reaching for the checkered flag that lay just within her reach. As soon as she had it, Rooster sped up, the mud splattering the front of Maverick’s helmet.
“Ok kid,” Maverick muttered under his breath. “You wanna play this game? I’ll oblige.
Maverick revved the engine and floored it through the muddy terrain with the other teams gaining speed behind him, desperately trying to catch up to Rooster and Rusty.
“Babe, c’mon we’re right behind’em!” Cole urged, tapping Phoenix on her shoulder.
“I’m on it hon!”
Phoenix gripped the gas and the vehicle sped forward, the marsh water kicking up in a white-water spray and soaking her and Cole.
“Babe it’s right there! Flag is right there!” he shouted.
“Lean in! Lean in!”
Cole leaned over, reaching out his long, muscular arm and snatching it right up, howling with victory as they sped on to catch up with the other two teams. Hangman and Gretchen came up right beside them just seconds later, a flag in hand and teasing them with a few rude hand gestures.
“Hey! Up yours Bagman!” Phoenix shouted.
“You’ve got it wrong honey!” Hangman teased. “I’m on your tail, not the other way around!”
Natasha stuck her middle finger right in the air, in plain view for him and everyone else to see.
Hangman laughed and spotted the next flag near the path that led to a rickety little bridge over a pond, reveling in his soon-to-be triumph when a thought suddenly hit him. “Hey Phoenix!” he called.
“What up?!”
“Where the fuck’s Baby on Board?!”
No sooner had he asked than he heard that familiar, angry rev of the ATV close by. “HOLY SHIT!!!” Hangman exclaimed as Gretchen’s arms clenched a little.
Bob and Moira swung around the corner in a torrent of mud and dirt dust like a SWCC boatman, turning tight into the hairpin turn and scaring the ever living shit out of Hangman and Gretchen. Bob sped ahead fearlessly, passing them with ease and snatching up the flag without a second thought.
“Go! Go get’em baby!” Gretchen cheered.
Off they went, but there was no way in hell the others would be able to keep up. The terrain was getting a bit rough, but that didn’t stop any of them from pushing forward.
Loud cheers, yells and screams of pure ecstatic happiness came from the pilots and their spouses as they caught up to one another, a mess of mud, marsh water, sweat and b.o that didn’t bother any of them in the least. Not since “Dogfight Football” had any of them had as much fun.
“Holy shit!!!”
“Fuck man!!”
“Did Bob just pass everybody?!”
Nobody could believe it! Bob was well ahead of everybody with Moira collecting flags like no one’s business! Even Maverick was in shock at how well he was doing as a huge grin and a proud laugh escaped his throat. “Sneaky fucker!” he laughed.
“Bob! Robby honey, bandits at our six!” Moira announced.
“Copy, engines are a go! Let’s turn and burn Angel!!”
The wheels spun furiously, the mud splattering his jeans and shitty steel toed boots as Bob raced ahead. He fearlessly turned into the hairpins, surfing a wave of mud before speeding down the straighter, more narrow paths that led to the trailhead’s entrance.
In no time at all, the trailhead spilled out into the familiar little cove near the water’s edge where the McRory house lay. Gretchen’s Meemaw and Pepaw waved as the ATVs all pulled to a stop, Bob and Moira being the first ones back with the most flags in hand.
Maverick and Penny pulled to a stop close by, hopping off and putting their helmets on the back of the seat. “Jeez Pete,” she said, still breathless and excited from the race. “You race like it’s the Indy 500.”
Maverick took her in his arms, laughing as the exhilaration of the race began to wear off. God they were a mess, every one of them.
They both looked over to see Bob being hoisted onto Rooster’s shoulder’s, the whole team chanting his name over and over again as though he had just won the Olympic Gold. Maverick and Penny were proud regardless. It was moments like this that they lived for, each and every day.

“Where there is anger, there is always pain underneath.”
■ ABOUT. ■
name: Angelina Como age: twenty-seven occupation: drug dealer gender: cis-female pronouns: she/her sexuality: utp
■ HISTORY. ■
Growing up with the evident affiliation with the Quantum of Devils wasn’t something most kids experienced. Angelina didn’t personally see a difference, she didn’t care that people looked at her strangely, or some people at school weren’t allowed to hang out with her after school hours. Angelina never took it personally, she saw their rejections as their weakness, not hers. Being one of two daughters to the president, a lot of people underestimated her at first. They weren’t sure what she’d amount to. As she got older and became more socially aware, it became a goal to prove them all wrong. Angelina has always loved putting people in positions where they owed her something. Whether it was something tangible or simply a favour in the future, that sense of high made her feel powerful. Just like her father, she was power-hungry. She pictured herself being president of the Quantum of Devils for her entire life. It’s what was told and sometimes expected of her. Angelina soon became obsessed with that very feeling and of course, did what she could to never let that feeling inside diminish. She was lucky to find a best friend who was the exact same. Since the day they met in the first grade she and her best friend became two of the scariest kids on the playground. The two of them always played pranks and enjoyed the game of blackmail way too much.
One of her best pranks she ever executed was when she lead a group of second-generation Devils to burn down the private school that was about to celebrate its grand opening. Her plan was effortless until all those rich kids who were supposed to attend the private school, suddenly enrolled in her public high school. She hadn’t expected that outcome and by far wasn’t pleased in the slightest. She hated the idea of outsiders coming into her school and taking over, though she decided to change her point of view and look at the positive side. She and her close friends saw this as an opportunity. They used the assimilation of schools to their advantage. It was safe to say that in high school Angelina would often lead the group of second-generation royals through various plans to keep their control of the school. It was in her nature to lead and she played the part effortlessly. She set out so most of the second generation devils members would start selling drugs for double to the rich kids knowing they could easily afford it. Her group became the biggest drug dealers amongst theirs and many high schools in their area.
Angelina and the rest of the teenage Devils ruled the school and almost every party that was hosted in the four years of high school. After graduation, she did what all her friends did and put her name in the hat for the prospect. During that time, most of her friends were older than her, her two close friends Wren and Selena were both older so when she became a prospect, they were already full members. Somehow the group of prospects she’d worked with, didn’t know who she was at first and they gave her hell. Being one of the only female prospects at the time, she used her wit and mental ability to tear someone down as her weapon to scare them off. After becoming a full member, she went back to her roots and began selling drugs for the club. Angelina made a small name for herself in the drug business in Texas, she often held the cards and was owed many favours. Her favourite position to be in.
When a new member joined the Devils she didn’t think much of it at first, especially since this member was the same age as her dad. She didn’t make them work for her trust like she would if someone her own age joined. She watched his Garrett character climb the ladder and get close to her father. The closeness of their relationship worried her because she wondered if he was trying to steal the seat she rightly wanted and deserved. Her father had started giving Garrett attention than his own daughter. Angelina wanted the be the president, everyone knew it and believed it could have been a smart move when the time was right. Angelina knew at that time she wasn’t ready for the presidency, she still had so much to learn, though it was a goal she didn’t want to push aside for. Garrett’s friendship started to frustrate her on a personal level, she chose to do her own spying and gain as much information as she could. She needed to know who this random man was.
■ WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON? ■
Angelina Como was born into the original Devils, her father was one of the original members who built the club from the ground, and for that, she will always have a personal commitment to the quantum of devils. Her father was incredibly committed and had become president when she was six years old. When Garrett started to weasel his way into her father’s life, she had a feeling he wasn’t trustworthy. The more she tried to talk to her father about it the more he pushed her off and treated her like a child. Which for one, furiously aggravated her. It’s for that reason, she took matters into her own hands and tried her best to find something against Tubbs.
■ KEEP THIS AWAY FROM YOUR ENEMIES ■
When the second charter moved to New York Angelina continued to collect dirt on Tubbs, most of the club already trusted and respected him though she wasn’t buying it. While in New York, she kept a close eye on him. She followed him everywhere he went, she watched him pay off a local to purposely planted drugs into the bar. At first, she thought it might be a safe house he’d pre-planned, though when the news reported that the very same bar was raided and two well-known club members were incarcerated. Angelina felt the events must have been connected. While this wasn’t proof, she wanted to bring this up to her father. When she saw him and Tubbs together, she obviously followed them. She waited for the Tubbs would leave her father alone. Although, her waiting would be the biggest regret of her life. Within minutes, she witnessed Tubbs kill her father right in front of her eyes. Without thinking, she crept away knowing she’d be next if she were caught. She was a wreck when she made her way back to the new clubhouse that she confided in the first person who found her. For months she tried her best to find an angle where the club would believe her, now that they were in New York, she needed to know Tubbs connection with the gang bar he’d planted the drugs in. That was her only lead to finding out why they were in New York and what connection he had to that gang.
■ RELATIONSHIPS. ■
■ Ivanna Martinez: While Angelina works to bring down Tubbs she’s still doing her best at staying under the radar, which is why she’s started working with Ivanna at the new club.
■ Kevin Walsh: Kevin is someone she often sees at the club, she thinks of him as a go-to invite when she plans on drifting into a state of serious alcohol.
■ Maverick Ambrose: When she arrived back at the new clubhouse after witnessing her father get shot. She felt like the whole world had been on her shoulders. She was falling apart when Maveric found her and took her into the city for drinks. She’d known Maverick since birth and trusted him to share her doubts and information about Tubbs, including what she’d just witnessed.

INTRODUCING,
NAME: Alana Maverick.
AGE: Twenty-nine.
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Cis female, she/her.
ORIGINALLY FROM: Devinstone, MA.
OCCUPATION: Podcaster / Freelance writer.
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Braeswood.
"Who’s the real you? The person who did something awful, or the one who’s horrified by the awful thing you did?"
BIOGRAPHY,
Trigger warnings/content warnings: drugs, death, gambling
Every now and then the cosmos aligned just right and a soul was born into a name that proved fate to be something real. Alana was born to Laura and Alexander Maverick, a couple who had married right out of high school and were going nowhere fast. The two couldn’t seem to figure out adult life and how to live efficiently; money was often squandered too quickly, often as soon as it hit the pockets or bank account so that they could enjoy young adulthood, forgetting they had a young child who needed proper attention and consistent care. Alana or Lana as most called her, spent much of her time in the care of a neighbor while her parents worked and then burned through their paychecks. A latchkey kid was what she would soon become, finding she had personality traits all too similar to her parents — addictive like her father and hedonistic like her mother. Alexander had a gambling habit, known locally as a bit of a card shark that would occasionally take a trip to large cities to hit up bigger game and bigger jackpots. Her mother, Laura, was into anything that made her feel good; whether that was dabbling in drugs and drink or getting in a fast car with a man that wasn’t her high school sweetheart turned husband, she was game for it.
It was two weeks before Alana’s fourteenth birthday when her father never returned home from a weekend rounders trip up in New Jersey. Missing persons reports were filed and investigations eventually went cold after a month of not so hard looking around. Apparently Alexander had a reputation in Jersey City and Atlantic City which caused for the police to tell Alana and her mother to expect the worst — he was no doubt gone and not meant to be found. Of course the young teen was devastated by the disappearance and permanent loss, though perhaps not so much as she could have been given the lack of depth to her connection with her parents. They had always been somewhat distant and absent, loving but too invested in themselves rather than creating a wholesome family like much of her friends and classmates at school had. Instead of grieving heavily, Alana opted for fantasy, imagining that her dad was some explorer or an archaeologist working on a dig in some foreign and far away land. She did it because even then Alana had the thoughts that there had to be more to life than this.
Coping well wasn’t something her mother did when it came to the loss of Alexander. It surprised Alana, she had believed they pretty much lived separate and distant lives. Given that she was the only parent now to put food on the table and provide for Alana, Laura stepped up and cleaned up her act a bit. Nothing was given up in entirety, things simply slowed and didn’t happen as often. The absenteeism of boundaries and structure in her life set Alana on a crash course for destruction and ruin for her own life, as it seemed every time life led to a fork in the road she always took the path less traveled, always made the wrong choice and went the wrong direction. It seemed she was determined to learn things the hard way, through mistakes and major fuckups. She wasn’t yet fifteen when she gave into experimenting with drugs, and like her mother, anything that got her heart racing. But Alana always seemed to get caught or into more than she could handle.
After getting caught drag racing cars, it was determined by the state that she wouldn’t be able to drive a car legally until she was eighteen. Despite it being an ‘oh shit’ moment and quite the wrench in her youth, the minor brush with the law couldn’t set her straight. No, she continued to make bad decisions. At seventeen, Alana was expelled from high school for drug possession and if her own vices weren’t bad enough, the young brunette’s attractiveness also turned out to be a problem. She knew how to use her long and lean legs, sun kissed skin, and sweet talk coming from glistening pink lips to get just about anything she wanted from someone. Usually it was for a fix or a drink, older men always being the best targets, no matter her goals and dreams in life, Alana just couldn’t seem to get it right. Holding down a job was laughable, giving up on her own hedonistic indulgences generally always turned out to be too big of a sacrifice, so Alana went on bouncing through life one or more problems at a time.
The town just seemed to get smaller and smaller, too many people knew her and not in a way that would have Alana holding her head high when sober. Her mother long gave up on her so the official freedom of eighteen sent the girl to the big city, finding Boston to be exciting and a fresh start. She managed to get her GED and enrolled in college, though again, a normal social structure and schedule was too hard to maintain and it took longer than the average for Alana to earn an associate’s of arts in journalism, one of her dreams being an editor. It was during her time in college that the Maverick began to pull out of society’s labeled boxes. College was also a time where dating a woman opened up to her and just another avenue of life she walked down the path of. Sexually, women were great but she learned that romantically she still needed a man, and both were fun to entertain on the college and creative scene she got involved with. For some time, she was hardly around, traveling with other creatives led her to adventures she wouldn’t soon forget. Such as the trip in New Orleans where she got mugged, or the sex party she somehow ended up at while in Los Angeles, the paths were never clear how she got from one place to the next but it sure as hell wasn’t the rational part of her brain that made the decisions.
Eventually when back in Boston, her addictions got her in trouble once again and with the threat of jail time looming over her head, Alana yet again made a one sided pact with God that if he helped her out of the mess she would go clean and straight. The lesson would have been to take the consequences, sell out her dealer and do a little time then work to live life responsibly. She was edging on thirty, in that over twenty-five space and still hadn’t really begun living properly, something that had festered under the surface and nagged at her in the back of her mind. The DEA had another plan for her, one she stupidly took, and that was no jail time if she worked as an informant. What she didn’t expect with taking on the name Samantha and getting close to James was that she would find such a kindred spirit and someone she felt the need to help and take care of but also a man she would fall crazily in love with. Partly, she would tell herself that it was the drugs and the partying she did with him but Alana had gotten very good at lying to herself. Eventually being between a rock and a hard place, she cracked, the pressure from the DEA and the love she had for James sent her running away. She fed the DEA some fairly useless information and made up the rest, keeping all of James’s secrets before leaving town and entering into rehab.
It was one thing to break her own heart over and over again in life, it was another to have someone else’s heart in your hands and to take advantage and hurt someone you loved. Her new vow was to get clean and stay clean, to finally live life as a real adult in the world should. During her stint in rehab is when she made a connection that once again she didn’t expect. Alana became friends with a producer of a radio show and they convinced her that for whatever reason she had the chops to be a host. Since her release and move to back to Devinstone, Savannah took up that job working in radio while she tried to figure out what to really do with her life. She considered going back to school and finishing her degree but her venture into podcasting took off, with her show landing in the top ten ratings and deciding to hang out there Alana felt a bit set and secure. The main struggles are the temptations, she’s stayed clean of drugs but not walking off onto the wild side often leaves her ansty with boredom.
+ Adventurous, engaging, free-spirited. - Aimless, irresponsible, fickle.

A closer look: Alicia & Maxwell
This is from the cgw universe(Cordonians gone wild) a collaborative effort by @ao719 @speedyoperarascalparty @cocomaxley @riseandshinelittleblossom and myself. Catch up on our other crazy adventures here
We asked, you picked. Here is a closer look at Alicia and Maxwells friendship.
Tumblr media
Alicia stood in front of the massive Christmas tree in the foyer of the Palace surrounded by their friends. This was the first Christmas with the new king and Queen and with that came new traditions. Since deciding to stay in Cordonia, Anitah thought it would be a good idea for Alicia to get involved in a charity. Although no title, the buzz about the woman who did the unthinkable, and got the playboy prince to commit drew a lot of attention.  Alicia chose helpful hearts, an organization that helped families who struggled financially. Speaking to Anitah and liam she got permission to use the grand entryway tree as an angel tree. Liam and anitah hosted a Charity ball in honor of the organization and as also have each family in attendance chose a child from the tree, and provide presents.
“This was a huge success love.” She grinned as she felt a pair of strong arms wrap around her.  “I know, it's so great we have raised a lot of money. Did you pick a child from the tree?” she turned facing him. “I did. I almost had to fight lord Davis for one, he picked 6.” “Well, I'm glad people are embracing this. There will be a lot of happy children on Christmas morning.” Leo placed a soft kiss on her lips. “Speaking of Christmas gifts. You still have not given me any ideas my prince.”
Leo shook his head “That's because I've got all I need in my arms. As long as you're mine, that's all I need.” “Leo, im serious.” He smirked as he walked over to speak with Regina.
“This is so awesome Alicia.  I am excited to buy presents for these kids.” Maxwell grinned holding a handful of papers. “Maxwell, how many families did you pick?” Maxwell pursed his lips “ahhh 8.” He silently counted the slips in his hand. “Yup, 8.”
“Maxwell, that is just. Please don't ever change ok.” She pulled him into a hug. “Oh, thank you Alicia. I won't, don't worry.” She sank down into a nearby chair, letting out a sigh. “Whats wrong?” he asked. “It's just, Its Leo.” she sighed. “leo? What's wrong with Leo? I thought you guys were doing really good.” He sat, concerned. “Oh, we are. It's just. It's Christmas, our first Christmas together.  It's Also six months since we made things official. He is so amazing, and I just want to get him something really nice.” Maxwell grinned “oh. Your six monthaversary? That's awesome. Hey, how about if we go shopping together. We can shop for the kids, and i can help you find the perfect present for leo.” Alicia perked up “really Max? You would help me?” “Of course, Leo is my best bud.” “Oh thank you so much Maxwell, I can't wait.” She threw her arms around him squeezing him tight.  “It's going to be so much fun. It will also give us some time to get to know each other more.”
A few days later. The tinted SUV pulled up in front of the Ramsford estate. A ginning Maxwell came running out. “oooh I can't wait.” he squealed making Alicia giggle. “So I have narrowed it down to a few ideas. Do you think you could store a puppy for me until Christmas? Bertrand wont let me bring any more animals into the house.” He pouted. “oh, ah. I think they are looking for um, presents that are not alive.  Maybe a stuffed dog instead?” Maxwell made an o shape with his mouth “Good call. Ok then a huge stuffed dog then.” Alicia shook her head and smiled.
They pulled up to the mall and walked in. “So what do you think Leo would like?” Alicia asked Maxwell, who's eyes immediately found the toy store. “A motorcycle.” He grinned.  “He has 5. And I don't have motorcycle money.” she chuckled. “Well, i'm sure we will find something. Can't we, um.” Maxwells eyes kept darting towards the toy store. “Lets go.” she motioned towards the store. “ok, one little girl wants a Tiffany doll. But they are sold out everywhere.” Maxwell pouted. “well it doesn't hurt to look or ask.” Alicia walked up to a sale associate “Excuse me miss, I know this may be a long shot but do you happen to have any Tiffany dolls in stock?” The cashier sighed “we haven't been able to keep them in stock, but, we did just get a shipment in. Can you check back in about 2 hours? They are unloading the truck as we speak.” Alicia nodded and they left.
They headed into a leather store “Do you think Leo would like a new Leather Jacket? He always wears the same brown one.” Alicia asked. “Maybe, but what about these?” Maxwell held up a pair of leather riding gloves.  “Oh those are nice, they even customize them. I could have LJR put on them. ” Alicia admired the gloves. “Done, i'll handle the forms, you go look and see if anything else catches your eye.” Maxwell waved her off.
The next store they went into was a novelty store. Maxwell held up a blow up doll “Maybe he would like one of these, this one looks like you. He could snuggle it whenever you arent home. Or is it a pool float?” Alicia's eyes went wide. “Ahh max, i um, that's not. You know what, were just gonna put that back.” He shrugged walking away. As Alicia browsed she noticed Maxwell pulling out his phone, smiling at the screen and then shoving it back into his pocket. Maxwell put a few things into her basket, insisting Leo would love them. They checked out, and again Maxwell was on his phone Texting.
They walked around the mall stopping at a few kiosk in the center. “Leo is lucky to have you, he seems like the perfect guy.” Maxwell grinned. “He is great. But he has flaws too Max. We all do.” “Maverick? No way, I don't believe it. Like what then.”
Alicia shook her head “Trust me, he does. Like hes a stress farter.” Maxwell stopped immediately “A what?” “He farts, when He's stressed out. The only thing that helps it is Sex.” Maxwell's eyes went wide. “No way!” “I swear to god. He has such a high sex drive as it is, why do you think we have so much sex?” Alicia giggled. “I just thought you two couldn't keep your hands off each other.”He shrugged. “Well we can't but, that's one of the reasons. God please don't tell anyone,  he would kill me.” maxwell held up his hand “Beaumont promise.”
“so why do you call him Maverick?” they continued walking. “Oh um. When we were younger Leo and Bertrand were really into top gun. They let Liam and i watch it with them once. And Maverick was so cool with his leather Jacket and aviators. Just like Leo. So that's what I started calling him.”
“wait a minute,  are you saying Leo wore a leather jacket even back then?” Maxwell shook his head “Yup. Leo was the definition of cool. Everyone wanted to be him, and all the girls wanted him. And even with the attention and popularity he always made time for me. He was like the cool older brother Bertrand never was.” “Awe Max. That is so sweet, and so cheesy. Now I know why Leo has such a big head.” she laughed. Maxwell pulled out his phone again, typing and smiling before putting it back.
They sat down to get some lunch in the food court. “This is great. Bertrand never lets me eat food court food. I love cheese burgers and fries.” He said with a smile. “Maxwell, who have you been texting?” She eyed him as he typed again. “Oh um. Well.” he rubbed the back of his neck. “You remember Drakes cousin Stephanie?” Alicia nodded “The cute little redhead that you couldn't take your eyes off of all night?” she grinned. “Yeah, well we um, we have been talking for a while.” he took a huge bite out of his burger. “oh, that is so cute Maxwell. So, you like her?” she pushed. “Yeah, she's  great. But she's in Texas, and well i'm here.” He frowned. “Do you think she likes you too?” maxwell contemplated her words for a minute “yeah.. i think so. But, like I Said, the distance thing.” Alicia flashed him a smirk “if its love, it'll find a way.” Maxwell grinned “You know, you can tell you and Leo are together.”
“Why do you say that?” “Because you just gave me the same smirk he gives.” Alicia's hand slapped her forehead shit.
It was finally time to head back to the toy store. They walked in finding the same clerk they spoke to earlier. “Oh thank god, I was able to hold one, but they didn't last a minute.” she held up the box. Suddenly a woman came from out of nowhere snatching the doll from the clerks hands. “Thanks.” she grinned beginning to walk away. “HEY.” Maxwell hollerd, the woman rolled her eyes. “No the fuck she didn't. Maxwell, wait here.” Alicia took off towards the woman. “Excuse me.” She called out trying to get the woman's attention “EXCUSE ME.” the woman turned around. “That doll is my friends.” the woman rolled her eyes again. “Well, i'm the one who has it, so looks like its mine.” she smirked. “Yes because you snatched it out of the the clerks hands, now I'd like the back please.”
“You snooze you lose, im keeping it.” The woman turned around to leave,  Alicia grabbed her arm “Maybe you didn't hear me the first time, give me the doll back.”
“I heard you, I'm not giving it to you. Get your hand off me you trashy bitch.” Alicia's eyes went wide. “Oh no you didn't. I tried to be nice, I tried to do this the civil way but..” Alicia started taking off her earrings. “Look here bitch, you got 2 options. 1, you give me the doll back and be on your way. Or 2, I whoop your fucking ass and take the doll back. Your choice.” she jumped shaking her head and arms. “Think fast, because where i'm from we don't give much time to think”
The woman stammered “I'll call security.”
“Go ahead, I promise you nothing will happen to me. But I'll still enjoy beating your ass.”
“wait a minute, you're. You're that American, the one Prince Leo is dating.”
“You know, you can never really be sure. Tick tock lady.”
“You're crazy. Here, take it.” She tossed the doll at Alicia and hurried out of the store.
Alicia returned to Maxwell and handed him the doll. “That was, awesome Tiger Lily.”
“Tiger lily?”
“Yeah, I like flowers. Your feisty so, its fitting.”
Alicia shrugged her shoulders “Sounds good to me. Now let's get these presents for the kids.”
Maxwell and Alicia made their way back to the leather store to pick up the gloves. Alicia ran to get them smoothies while maxwell ran in to get the gloves. He approached Alicia a large grin on his face. “they turn out good?” she asked taking a seat on the bench. Maxwell nodded his head “Yup, take a look.” He opened the box, Alicia's eyes went wide, she spilt her drink out and coughed.  “Ma. Maxwell. Why. Why do they say Big Daddy on them? I told you to put Leos initials.” she wiped her mouth. “I thought this would be nicer, I heard you call him that a few times.” her face reddened at the realization Maxwell had definitely heard them having sex a time or two. “Oh god. Um thanks Maxwell, im ah, sure Leos going to get a kick out of these.”
After dropping Maxwell off Alicia returned to the Palace. She entered her and Leos Quarters and attempted to hide his presents. She left the bags for the adopt a family on the bed. “Hey baby, how was shopping with Max today?”  “Oh it was, eventful, but fun.” She stuffed the last bag into the closet. “This all the stuff for the kids.” Leo began looking in the bags. “Ah yup, I just need to take it with me tomorrow.”
“What's this?” Leo picked up a box that was under one of the bags. “The leather shop?” he started to open the box “no leo don't.” She dove for the box but it was to late.  “Oh, leather riding gloves these are Ni-” He stopped mid sentence, that sly smirk spread across his face. “Big daddy?” Alicia's face reddened “I told Maxwell to have them put your initials, but um, he thought my nickname for you was a nice touch.” “But that's not your nickname for, oooooh.” the realization set in Leo started to chuckle “Apparently we are um, a bit loud when we have sex.” Alicia giggled.
A few days later Alicia, Anitah and Genevieve met up for lunch. Pam had plans extra appointments, so she said she would see them later at her house. “How was shopping with Maxwell?” Genevieve asked. “oh it was good,  lots of fun.” Alicia picked up a breadstick. “oh she had fun alright. She almost got into a rumble with some lady over a doll.” Anitah giggled. “A fight? Oh I wish I was there.” Gen grinned. “It was for the children.” she tossed the breadstick at Anitah. “Maxwell is a really sweet,  kind and caring guy. Anitah you know first hand how above and beyond he goes for his friends.” Anitah nodded in agreement. “I learned that our Maxwell has a crush. And I have an idea.” The girls both grinned and scooted forward. “Ok, how about…."

The Subculture of Rave in 90s Manila
Written by Marga Magalong
Tumblr media
For us millennials, the culture of house music has been handed to us on a silver platter. When you’re 14 you go to an open party and the self-made DJ transitions Martin Garrix to The Chainsmokers – only for sheer accompaniment to your T-Ice and freshman naiveté. Or maybe you were a 10-year old kid forced to dance along to Benny Benassi’s Satisfaction for intrams. It is debatable whether acts like that of The Chainsmokers really is house but the point is, one way or another you have been living amongst the many by-products and vague sub-genres stemming from the influence of house music, but more specifically, the influence of the subculture that was rave.
At present, if you were aching to hear quality-driven electronic music, one could easily look up the gig sched of your patronized disc jockey and book an Über to Black Market or TodayXFuture. What a time to be alive! Manila nightlife is not so much of a monopoly as it used to be, with an enticing platter of bars, warehouses, and clubs, you won’t have to drag yourself to over-saturated EDM Meccas like Pool Club. However, for the Gen-Xers of 90’s Manila, it didn’t come easy. If you wanted to hear Mr. Fingers and other authentic house from hubs like Chicago or Manchester, it’d be an impossible feat to hear it play in your local club.

In the late 80’s to early 90’s, notable lounges and clubs like Euphoria or Mars would attract teenagers dressed in their Ralph Lauren while playing songs from the Billboard Hot 100. Many attempts were made to provide fresh house music by organizing raves, but no other production pulled it off quite how Consortium did.

A week ago I sat down to interview Toti Dalmacion: to many youngins he is the man behind Terno Recordings and This Is Pop! Records, but try asking your tita who he is and you’ll get nostalgia-ridden answers of Toti’s past-persona. In the 90’s, he was known for his record store Groove Nation and his spearheading of raves by Consortium. He once called himself “The Prophet of Doom”, remembering being irritated by the lackluster quality of raves upon his arrival from L.A. to Manila. The word “rave” had been loosely used to throw parties typical in the Manila fashion of sosyalan. Toti tells me, “No one was really dancing. It was more of to be seen, with music in the background and people just nodding their heads and drinking.” This was until he formed Consortium, “a roving underground party” aimed to push the envelope for raves in the Philippines – to make it less about high society and more about the music.
Tumblr media
(Derrick May at one of the Consortium raves) Back in L.A., Toti frequented underground warehouse parties, he had met legendary house personalities like Derrick May and Marques Wyatt, and went to raves being busted by cops. He was enthralled by the whole scene, and upon going back to Manila he was itching to bring Filipinos what he had experienced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Consortium was notorious for hosting raves in off-the-wall venues. One of which was a warehouse in Star City, gracing legendary acts like Doc Martin and Ken Ishii.

“We did it at the Shangri-La Mall food court when it wasn’t even a food court yet” Toti recalls. Other venues were the Philippine Daily Inquirer warehouse, and the most notable one, a rave in the National Library.
Tumblr media
(The flyer for the National Library rave)
“Malate was THE place then for bohemians and similar tribes if you wanted to escape the Makati crowd” he tells me. Here, the guys of Consortium would give out flyers pointing out directions to when and where their next rave would take place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a sense, Consortium had been a maverick in shifting Manila youth culture to a whole new direction. What set it apart from clubs like Euphoria was that Consortium wasn’t tied down to giving into commercial song requests. They played what they wanted to play, and the rest of Manila followed.

Consequently, the culture of Ralph Lauren polo shirts had been subverted and retired in exchange for local streetwear. Nearby students would hang-out in the Robinsons Galleria shop of Havoc Street Couture by Adam de Lumen. Staple rave fashion would be bought from brands like Grocery in San Juan, owned by Cecile Z., a regular of Consortium herself.

“The youth culture changed in a flash. We suddenly felt that being different was not all bad but rather more fun. Street fashion became the voice of every Filipino youth dying to break the stereotype. In that brief period, we became exposed to a new lifestyle that changed our music, style, and way of life forever” says the unnamed author of the blog ilove90sfashion.wordpress.com.

As time progressed into the new millennium, house music had met its many mutations in the form of “deep house, tribal house, Jackin’, etcetera […] As well as the proliferation of the more commercial Eurodance, prog house, trance” and of course – EDM. The use of techno and house had trickled from raves to nation-wide commercial use, spanning from barangay Christmas blow-outs to noontime shows. While the ravers of the 90’s grew up, millennials took helm of house music’s fate by attending festivals like CloseUp Forever Summer and popularizing the sound of EDM. The times they are a-changin’, and consequently one issue arises, do millennials know their house?
Tumblr media
Toti cynically tells me about the spoon-fed marketing that goes with artificially inseminating an idea of house music to millennials and popular culture. “They just go by what Beatport says […] Because, yeah, you have the internet. You can research and research for hours – but to really train your ears on the really good underground stuff is not really something most do because, that’s what I’m saying: It’s always spoon-fed. Beatport says, [these are] the top 100 house tracks, when you know very well, if you listen to them…some of them aren’t even house or techno, it’s just that they are marketed as such.”
Tumblr media
The real issue here is for millennials to stop confusing what’s house and what isn’t – but house or not, it’s important to keep the legacy of Consortium by breaking the monopoly and celebrating diversity. It’s 2017 and as a millennial, it feels good to be able to choose what to listen to and where to go for the night.
