Tis a Good’n. If you’re not aware, Band Camp is going through… well, some THINGS at the moment, the long term effects of which are yet to be seen. So for the time being we’ll still be releasing music there. We’ll let you know if or when that changes. That said, we’re working out some additional ideas for distribution including some nifty FREE options that may get rolled out here in the near future. “Free”, after all, is the tastiest flavor of anything really. At this stage for Maid, eyes and ears are the most important things for us. They’ll keep the wheels a’turning and the good stuff a’flowin’. うーん。全ッ然スローモーションじゃ無いんだよね（笑）

彼ら自身がマスロックをそこまでメインに標榜してない通り、本来的なマスロックであるかどうかはまた別の話として、ここではマスロックとして紹介したい。

「その隙間から」から「SONOSUKIMAKARA」に変名して２作目、彼らのフルレンスとしては初作品として紹介されているもの。元々彼らの音楽性は、いわゆる手数の多いポストロック、特に変名直後のセルフタイトル作は言わばマスロックに片足突っ込ん��いたようなものと感じていたが、今作は単純なマスロックというよりは電子音をふんだんに用いた刹那的な音楽に変容しているように思う。

最初の一音からフルスロットル、それがテーマだと勝手にのたまってもきっと否定されないほど「飛ばした」音楽性。一曲目に叩きつけてくる#1“SLOW MOTION”がそもそもスローでもなんでもなく、めちゃくちゃに早いしキレてる。顕著にそれが出ているのが、#5“Zenith”であり、単純な音の繰り返しとミニマルなリズム感、メロディを奏でるベースの妙。ある種ゲームミュージック的で、そして日本人的、日本文化的で。むしろこの音楽を日本人以外が作っていたら嘘だって俺はいうよ。それほどに土着的信仰とは異なるが若い世代の遺伝子に刻まれたミュージック・カルチャーとしての楔。更には唐突な、とはいえ楽曲の魅力をそのまま保ちながら激情的、エモーショナルな展開へと流れ込む。この楽曲は作品のキモ的なシングルであり、作品の空気感、輪郭を表現しうる。

さて、彼らSONOSUKIMAKARAは変名もあるし、彼バンド体制自体も紆余曲折あり、通常のバンド体制から２ピース、デュオという形に変容した。逆にそれこそが彼らの音楽性への制約を取っ払った一面もあるように思う（最新のライヴ映像を見る限りゲストを入れているようだけれど）。ギター、ドラムの音のみに拘らず、電子音やサンプリングも混ぜ込んだ物理で殴るカットアップのような。#10“Secret Suit”など、一つ一つの裁断された破片が集合して曲を作り上げている様は物理カットアップ、2022年最新のミュージックコンクレートと言わずしてなんと言うか。

ジャケットも自ら手掛ける彼らだが、楽曲のトータルデザイン的なところもそれに準じているのかと感じる。アメリカのAn Andersonなどのように楽曲デザインというものはある意味確立している概念でもあって、アルバムという形態でこの作品を成されたパッケージとしてどう表現するか。そういったところを感じさせるのは、前に紹介したparanoid voidの新譜と同じく、この世代アーティストにおける原初的であり、彼らの音楽性を構成する魅力の一つでもあろうかと。他の比較対象の少ない、独自性を貫く傑作。
