Btw this is a first for me, pretty sure, but when I go into the As You Are tag (and I normally don't go into tags to begin with but still), it is wall-to-wall me freaking out over this movie. This is both hilarious and embarrassing. I am so, so very late to the party and so very, very emotionally horny over it.

WHEN RAQUEL WELCH AUDITIONED FOR THE ROLE OF MARY ANN ON GILLIGAN'S ISLAND
Actress RAQUEL WELCH, known for her role in the 1966 British fantasy adventure film "One Million Years BC", has passed away at the age of 82. Family members confirmed to TMZ that Raquel had died after a short illness. Her manager also confirmed her death, stating that she passed away peacefully after "a brief illness".
Born Jo-Raquel Tejada in Chicago in 1940 to a Bolivian father and an American mother, Raquel rose to fame and sex symbol status in the 1960s. She became an international icon after appearing in a deerskin bikini in "One Million Years BC". While the film received mediocre reviews, Welch's cavewoman image on its poster became part of cinema history. Raquel went on to star in more than 30 films, including "Fantastic Voyage" and "The Three Musketeers", as well as some 50 television series in a career spanning five decades.
In a rare recent interview with the Scottish Sunday Post in 2017, Raquel discussed how her two 1966 hits "made a huge difference to my career. Overnight, I found myself in demand. Before that, I was not much more than an extra." Subsequent major roles included the title role in "Myra Breckinridge" (1970) and a key part in "The Three Musketeers" (1973) and "The Four Musketeers: Milady's Revenge" (1974). She also had a memorable cameo on the TV sitcom "Seinfeld", in the episode "The Summer of George" (1997).
Raquel was not only known for her acting career but also for her beauty and fitness program. In 1984, she launched her Total Beauty and Fitness program, and in later years, she developed her own line of wigs, hair pieces and hair extensions.
Throughout her career, Raquel was often asked about the deerskin bikini she wore in "One Million Years BC". She stated that she did not mind being widely known for it, saying "I'm often asked if I get sick of talking about that bikini. But the truth is, I don't. It was a major event in my life so why not talk about it?" However, she also discussed how hard it was to avoid being typecast, writing in her 2010 autobiography "Beyond the Cleavage" that "all else would be eclipsed by this bigger-than-life sex symbol".
Raquel's impact on the film industry was significant, having starred in Hollywood's first interracial sex scene with Jim Brown in "100 Rifles" and playing a transgender heroine in the explicit "Myra Breckinridge" in 1970. She won the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical for "The Three Musketeers" in 1973, in which she played the queen's dressmaker.
Raquel was proud to acknowledge her Latino roots, stating in a 2002 interview with the New York Times, "I'm happy to acknowledge it and it's long overdue and it's very welcome. There's been kind of an empty place here in my heart and also in my work for a long, long time." Raquel is survived by her son Damon Welch and her daughter Tahnee Welch.

MARY CARSON BRECKINRIDGE // NURSE
“She was an American nurse midwife and the founder of the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS), which provided comprehensive family medical care to the mountain people of rural Kentucky. FNS served remote and impoverished areas off the road and rail system but accessible by horseback. She modeled her services on European practices and sought to professionalize American nurse-midwives to practice autonomously in homes and decentralized clinics. Although Breckinridge's work demonstrated efficacy by dramatically reducing infant and maternal mortality in Appalachia, at a comparatively low cost, her model of nurse-midwifery never took root in the United States.”

John Quentin Wesley, age 93 of Morganfield, KY went home peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. Quentin believed the promise of eternal life and that Jesus has prepared a home for him in heaven (John 14:2-4). He was born on October 29, 1929 at the very start of the Great Depression. Times were hard. He did not have an official birth certificate until 1964. With God’s grace, he and his 5 siblings endured a rural life in Sturgis, KY.
After graduating from Sturgis High School in 1948, Quentin attended Bob Jones University 1948-1949 in Greenville, SC. After one year, he transferred to Western Kentucky University where he was on the track team. He went on to law school at UK. While in Lexington, he met the love of his life, Hildegarde Taylor from Hardinsburg, KY. They married in 1955 and had 4 children. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1965 as Captain. While based at Wright Patterson, he worked on contracts for the B52 bomber.
Quentin practiced law for 50 years in a bustling office on Court St. across from the courthouse. Mr. Wesley represented the people of his community with honor and compassion. He was dedicated to his beloved community and answered the call to serve. Quentin utilized his popularity and his integrity to serve in many positions. Early in his professional years, he presided as Sturgis Kiwanis club president and served on the Henderson Community advisory board. He served as Morganfield City Attorney for 25 years and Union County Attorney. He represented the U.C. Board of Education for 50 years and the U.C. Water District. Quentin was selected Union County Judge Pro-Tem. In 1968 he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives and represented his constituents of the 7th district at the State Capital in Frankfort and served on the Executive Branch Ethics Committee. He was a Commonwealth Attorney. Quentin served on the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway for 8 years. Mr. Wesley was a Charter Life Fellow of the Kentucky Bar Association.
Through his education, military service, community service, and career, he traveled and collected many friends along the way. He and Hildegarde loved to travel. Their destinations included China and Russia. He and Hildegarde enjoyed driving across the country to see the wonders of this country he so loved; always returning to realize his blessings in Union County. On many occasions he proudly drove around “to look at crops”. Quentin was devoted to his faith. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Morganfield, where he led an adult men’s Bible study class for 50 years. In recent years, he helped with children’s vacation Bible school and facilitated the construction of the steeple on the existing sanctuary in Morganfield.
Quentin enjoyed the game of golf and cherished his regular golfing buddies. He planted many of the trees, bushes, and flowers by hand at the Breckinridge Golf Club. He wanted to preserve the course’s beauty for future generations of golfers. Quentin was a fan of all sports. He followed the Union County Braves, UK Wildcats, Oakland Raiders, and the Cincinnati Reds. Uncle Quentin adored all of his nieces and nephews. He kept up with their lives and supported their interests. He was always proud of their many accomplishments. He appreciated that his family frequently came to visit to just catch up on current events and news of family members.

Women’s Work is Never Done
Tumblr media
84. Women’s Work
Women have always been part of the workforce as both paid and unpaid labor. While wealthier women could choose work as an option, most poorer, widowed or single women had no choice; they had to go to work but the playing field was not equal and neither was the pay.
In a “San Francisco Call” article (June 23, 1910) suffragist Dr. Sophonisba Breckinridge argued the need for women to learn to value their work and demand higher wages, “...while woman was a keen and shrewd maker, buyer and manufacturer, she knew little of bartering for her own wages”. She believed that the advancement of women across all industries would also help lead to equal pay.
In 1911, while working for the National Consumers League in New York City, suffragist Francis Perkins witnessed the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. She was horrified by the event and vowed to do something about it. Teddy Roosevelt recommended her as Executive Secretary for the  Committee on Safety and she helped create the New York State Factory Investigating Commission which inspected factories to make sure that safety standards were in place. In 1932, Perkins became the first woman to be appointed to Secretary of Labor. She was instrumental to the success of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and helped America navigate the Great Depression.
June 5, 1920, Public Law No. 66-259 established the Women's Bureau within the U.S. Department of Labor. It is federally mandated to “formulate standards and policies which shall promote the welfare of wage-earning women, improve their working conditions, increase their efficiency, and advance their opportunities for profitable employment”. In 1920 women made up 20% of the workforce. As of 2020, women make up close to half of the workforce (47%).
The first Director of the Women’s Bureau was Mary Anderson. She was also the longest serving director having held the position from 1920 until 1944. In her autobiography, she stated, “I think our most important job was issuing the standards for the employment of women. It was the first time the federal government had taken a practical stand on conditions of employment for women, and although the standards were only recommendations and had no legal force, they were a very important statement of policy and were widely used in all parts of the country.”
However it was the rise of modern appliances and indoor plumbing that liberated more women than the vote. Having more free time allowed women to enter the workforce and pursue other interests outside of domestic responsibilities. Professor Emanuela Cardia, from the Department of Economics of University of Montreal did a major study on the impact of technology and women in the workforce. In 1890, 25% of American households had running water and 8% had electricity. In 1950, 83% had running water and 94% had electricity. In 1900, women spent an average of 58 hours per week on household duties. By 1975, those same chores only took about 18 hours. That’s a 40 hour difference; enough time to have a full time job or several leisure pursuits including getting an education or being politically active.

The origin of the old adage “a man may work from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done”, is unknown, but it may have its roots in this English broadside from 1629. (Historically, a broadside is a poster or flyer printed on only one side.)
