(me mato)

BeerBots could speed up the brewing process

Share: advertisement FULL STORY Craft brewers are continuously upping the ante and coming up with innovative ways to make or flavor their newest beers. Now, researchers are adding a new twist of their own, speeding up the brewing process with beer-making mini-robots or “BeerBots.” Reporting in ACS Nano, the team shows that these self-propelled, magnetic packages of yeast can make the fermentation phase go faster and cut out the need to filter the beverage. Beer, one of the world’s most-consumed drinks, can take a while to brew. In the first step, sugars are extracted from grains, such as malted barley, to create a watery solution called wort. Next, yeasts ferment those sugars, converting them into alcohol, carbon dioxide gas and new flavor compounds. This step can take as long as four weeks, and during that time, unwanted microorganisms can get in and spoil the final product with sour flavors. Previous researchers have suggested that encapsulating the yeast in polymer capsules could lessen the chance of spoilage by speeding up the process. So, Martin Pumera and colleagues wanted to develop a self-propelled bot to both make fermentation proceed more quickly and simplify the separation of yeast from the final beer. The researchers made 2-mm-wide BeerBot capsules by combining active yeast, magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and sodium alginate from algae and dripping the mixture into a ferric chloride solution. Then they made one side of the spheres porous by exposing that half to an alkaline solution in an electrochemical cell. Initial experiments showed that the yeast-containing beads could ferment sugar and produce carbon dioxide bubbles that propelled them upward. When they got to the surface, they released carbon dioxide into the air, and then sank again, resulting in a bobbing motion. When used to ferment malted barley wort, the team found that the self-propelled BeerBots transformed sugars faster than free yeast cells. As the sugar was used up and fermentation ceased, the yeast-containing capsules sank to the bottom of the flask. This made it easy to separate the yeast from the final product with a magnet, rather than with a filtration step that’s currently required to remove free yeast cells. Additionally, the collected BeerBots were active for up to three more wort fermentation cycles. Based on these results, the researchers say that BeerBots could produce tasty brews faster. advertisement Story Source: Materials provided by American Chemical Society. The Industrial Strength Tour: Ministry w/ Corrosion of Conformity & The Melvins live at The Tabernacle!
Ministry (Industrial metal/industrial rock/alt metal/ synth-pop (early)/new wave (early)/thrash metal) has released fifteen (15) LPs and twelve (12) singles/EPs since forming as a band in Chicago, IL back in 1981 by Al Jourgensen (producer/singer/instrumentalist). Over the years, members have come and gone, such notable names as Gibby Hayes, Chris Connelly, Burton C. Bell, Jello Biafra, Tommy Victor, Paul Barker, Joey Jordison (R.I.P.), and Martin Akins. Ministry would first announce that they would go on the Industrial Strength Tour during January 2020 with KMFDM and Front Line Assembly as opening support during March-April of 2021. This would have been a dream tour in 2021 for many old and new school goth/industrial music fans alike. But we all know how this all played out because 2021 was just like 2020 in some regards when it came to making a tour happen.
After a postponement, Helmet would replace KMFDM as opening support and they would try this once more for the Fall/Winter of 2021. Ministry would announce during September 2021, that they would try again to kick this tour off in 2022. This time, (the) Melvins and Corrosion of Conformity would join them on the road replacing Helmet and Front Line Assembly. Let me also add that they also lost their longtime drummer, Bill Rieflin, who died of cancer on March 24, 2020. This would be devastating to the members of Ministry who all loved their bandmate dearly. This would be a time for the band to bond together under extreme circumstances and appreciate this music so much more.
In my opinion, Al Jourgensen chose two bands to go on this tour who have both transcended their musical identity multiple times over their musical journey. Each band has tilted the status quo of what was expected from them by breaking boundaries in their musical stereotypes. Mavericks? Musical geniuses? Well, the answer is ‘Yes’ to both questions, but most of all it is important to note that these bands created music that they wanted to create for the world to hear. They did not want to conform to the record company executives who pushed the mainstream radio friendly recipe for instant success. Instead, each one of these bands took a path chosen by themselves many years ago and it is good to see each band still on said path with joy and excitement still when they take the stage for their fans. Over the years, they influence lives on in the music of so many artists/bands across the musical landscape.
Ministry during the Industrial Strength Tour will consist of Al Jourgensen (vocals/guitar), Cesar Soto (guitar), Monte Pittman (guitar), Paul D’Amour (bass), Roy Mayorga (drums), and John Bechdel (keys). Head over to Ministry’ Official Bandcamp page and give them some support today! They played a great mix of their expansive discography this night on tour, check it out below:

(the) Melvins (Experimental rock/sludge metal/alt metal/grunge/doom metal/hardcore punk) formed as a band in 1983 in Montesano, Washington. Since their first practice, these musical behemoths have released thirty (30) LPs and three (3) EPs. Yes, you read that correctly. Thirty full length albums have been released by these underrated veterans of rock and metal. Currently, the band consists of Buzz Osborne (lead vocals/guitars), Dale Cover (drums/percussion/vocals), and Steven Shane McDonald (bass/vocals). I first had the chance to do photography at a Melvins show during an Official After Party for Shaky Knees (2018), but due to unforeseen circumstances this would not transpire. Given the second chance, I was excited to get King Buzzo and his mighty crew in my sights finally. Guess you can say “bucket list” item checked off tonight. Well two adding Ministry!
Give (the) Melvins some support and head over to their Official Bandcamp page today! Check out their set list from this night below:

Corrosion of Conformity A.K.A. COC (Stoner rock/sludge metal/heavy metal/southern rock/southern metal/hardcore punk) formed as a band in 1982 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The band currently consists of Pepper Kennan (lead vocals/guitar), Woody Weatherman (bass), Mike Dean (Bass/vocals), and John Green (drums). They have released ten (10) LPs, one (1) Live LP, and four (4) EPs in their career. COC has been a staple in my musical journey (just like Ministry & (the) Melvins), so getting this opportunity was a dream come true!
I would be remised if I did not pay respect to Reed Mullin who was the former drummer for COC who unfortunately passed away on January 27, 2020. He had started playing with COC in 1982 but took a short break from the band in 2001 due to a back injury. He would rejoin COC in 2010, but health issues, including an alcohol relates seizure in 2016, would plague him near the time of his death. He was 54.
Check out Corrosion of Conformity’s Official Soundcloud page today! You can see what songs were played below:

Saint of the Day – 23 March – St Turibius of Mogrovejo (1538-1606) ArchBishop, Lawyer, Professor, Missionary, Preacher, Reformer, Professor, – born Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo in 1538 at Mayorga de Campos, Leon, Spain and died on 23 May 1606 at Santa, Peru of natural causes.   Patronages – Peru, Lima, Latin American bishops, Native rights, Scouts, Valladolid.   St Turibius predicted the exact date and hour he would die, which would come to pass. His reputation for holiness and learning was never forgotten for it led to calls for his canonisation. ,,Pope Innocent XI beatified the late archbishop but Pope Benedict XIII was the one to canonise him as a saint on 10 December 1726.
Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo was born on 16 November 1538 in the Valladolid province in Habsburg Spain to the nobles Luis Alfonso de Mogrovejo (1510–1568) and Ana de Roblès i Morán (1515–???);   He was named in honour of Saint Toribio.
He was noted as a pious child with a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin who fasted once a week in her honour and recited rosaries often.   He received an education befitting for a noble at the time;  he entered the college at Valladolid in 1550 where he studied humanities.   He became a professor teaching law to students at the reputed college in Salamanca.   His uncle Juan de Mogrovejo served as a professor there as well as at the San Salvador High School in Oviedo before King Juan III invited him to teach at the college in Coimbra.   Toribio accompanied his uncle there and studied at the college in Coimbra before returning to Salamanca sometime later.   His uncle died not long after he returned to Salamanca for his studies.   His learning and virtuous reputation led to King Philip II appointing him as the Grand Inquisitor on the Inquisition Court stationed at Granada in February 1571.   He remained in that position until 1576 but not without impressing the king with his work.
During this time Philip II nominated him for the vacant Lima archbishopric despite his strong protests.   He used his knowledge of canon law to remind him and the pope that priests alone could be designated with ecclesial dignities but the pope overruled him. Preparations were made for him to be ordained before the formal announcement could be made.    He was ordained to the priesthood in 1578 in Granada (after four consecutive weeks of receiving the minor orders) and Pope Gregory XIII named him on 16 May 1579 as the Archbishop of Lima;  he received his episcopal consecration in August 1580 from the Archbishop of Seville Cristóbal Rojas Sandoval.   In September 1580 he departed for Peru alongside his sister and her husband.
Tumblr media
The new archbishop first arrived in Paita on 12 May 1581 which was 600 miles – or 970 kilometers – from Lima.   He began his new mission travelling to Lima on foot while he baptised and taught the natives.   He was enthroned in his new see a week later.   His favourite topic was:  “Time is not our own and we must give a strict account of it”. He traversed his entire archdiocese three times on foot and alone; exposed to tempests and torrents as well as the wild beasts and tropical heat.   He also had to deal with fevers and often threats from hostile tribes.   He countered these all the while baptising and confirming almost one half million people which included the future Saint Rose and Saint Martin de Porres and also Saint Francis Solano (who later became a close friend) and Blessed Juan Masías.
He built roads and schoolhouses as well as chapels and hospitals;  he never forgot about the religious and established convents for them to live in.   In 1591 founded the first seminary in the western hemisphere and mandated that learning indigenous languages was a prerequisite in their formation.   He inaugurated the first part of the third Lima Cathedral on 2 February 1604.   He also assembled thirteen diocesan synods and three provincial councils during his tenure.   He was seen as a champion of the rights of the natives against the Spanish masters.   He learnt the local dialects for better communication with the native people and his own flock and was seen as a champion for rights and liberties despite Peruvian governors voicing opposition to him since he challenged their power and control.
Tumblr media
Mogrovejo sought the reformation of diocesan priests and found that some of their behaviour had grown too scandalous to be continued.   There were those priests who came to resent him for this though Francisco de Toledo supported his reform efforts and rendered assistance to the archbishop in that regard.   He also oversaw the Third Provincial Council from 1582 to 1583 which Philip II had requested he oversee.   He served as the council’s president but guided it rather than lead it;  he involved himself in drafting important concilliar documents.   Mogrovejo also worked to implement the decrees from the Council of Trent and made evangelisation a core theme in his episcopal career.   He produced a trilingual catechism in Spanish as well as in the native languages Quechua and Aymara in 1584 while the council mandated confessional manuals to aid confessors while calling for preaching in indigenous languages.  The council issued a decree from the council – one he endorsed – that proscribed excommunication to those clerics who engaged in business ventures since it was known that there were some clerics who exploited the natives for work and profit.
The council ended and Pope Sixtus V confirmed its decrees in 1588.   He held two more provincial councils in 1591 and in 1601.   Mogrovejo made three pastoral visitations that were all extensive in time.   He visited each parish and would first inspect all objects for divine worship (he expected them to be in good condition) before talking to the parish priest about the life of the parish.   He would then check the parish registers and then checked to see if the priest had the missal that Pope Pius V had mandated over a decade prior.
Tumblr media
His prediction of the exact date and hour of his death, would soon come to pass.   It was in Pacasmayo during a pastoral visit that he contracted a fever but continued labouring to the last and arrived at Saña in a critical condition.   He dragged himself to receive the Viaticum and died not long after this on 23 March 1606 (Holy Thursday) at 3:30pm at the Saint Augustine convent.   His final words were those of Jesus Christ on the Cross:  “Lord, into Thy hands I commend my spirit”.   His remains are interred in the archdiocesan cathedral.
Tumblr media
His beatification was celebrated under Pope Innocent XI in 1679 (ratified in the papal bull “Laudeamus”) and Pope Benedict XIII later canonised him as a saint on 10 December 1726 through the papal bull “Quoniam Spiritus”.   His liturgical feast was once celebrated on 27 April but is now celebrated on 23 March.   His cult was once confined for the most part to South America but is now universal because of his pioneering reforms.   He became the patron saint for the Latin American episcopate after Pope John Paul II proclaimed him as such in 1983.
Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne spoke on Mogrovejo as a tireless pastor who never tired “being close to God” whose “love for the poor manifested itself in the innumerable gestures” that marked his episcopal life.   Thorne further elaborated that “in Saint Toribio we reinforce our conviction that the time devoted to God is a guarantee of a faithful dedication to the fulfilment of our duties and to the service of our brothers”.
