Cavernclan- Goldstar: Outside of his clan, Goldenstar has taught the other clans to fear his clan, and more importantly, him. Not without provocation, he isn’t a monster. He simply created the path necessary to keep his clan alive, and he won't be made to feel guilty for that. The other clans started it, after all. He escaped Mossclan + Hayclan’s attack with all nine lives still remaining, though he would have given up all of them to save more of his clan if he could have. Inside his clan, he’s known as a strong and respected leader, who is getting up there in age. However, if pushed too far, the deep anger that brews within him can sometimes make an appearance. One of his greatest allies has been his fierce mate Locustgaze. His clan generally respects him for what he did after the attack, though a few might whisper he had been too harsh. He has a soft spot for kits. Reedbuur: Reedburr has always been a respected warrior in the clan. He wasn’t chosen as Deputy until after the previous Deputy, Orangepelt, died in the attack on the clan, before they took to the tunnels. He is known for being quite strict, not letting any cat skirt their responsibilities, and he is also quite smart. He’s not a huge cat for small-talk, but if you do need someone to organize a group, he’s your tom! He's sometimes referred to as 'the Red Deputy.' Glowfish: Glowfish gained her Medicine cat name pretty young, as her mentor was lost in the attack on their clan. Since the attack on the clan, she has become quite lonesome and withdrawn, still struggling to cope with all the losses and change. There was a lot of death and injury for a young Medicine cat apprentice to deal with that night. She is quite smart, and was easily able to memorize all the names of the herbs and their uses from a young age, so she has proven to be a great asset to her clan so far.

Oddthistle: Oddthistle is a good cat to have around if you want a fight, being skilled in the area. If one doesn't like having their beautiful pelt marred by scars, one must learn to fight well! She’s also quite charismatic, and is quite easily able to convince most cats to her viewpoint, if given enough time. She’s not a big fan of Goldenstar at the moment. Despite all he has done for the clan, she had hoped to be named Deputy, and she bears a grudge against Reedburr for being chosen instead of her. She does know both leader and Deputy are getting old however, so she’s biding her time. Burntheart: Burntheart is a cat of few words, but he has a quiet confidence to him. He is a good hunter, his darker pelt being the perfect colour for hunting within the caves, or at night. Usually all that can be seen of him approaching is his dark green eyes, which has been known to startle young kits in the past. He and his mate Cherryfreckle lost their kit in the attack, and he would love to have more kits one day. Cherryfreckle: Cherryfreckle has always been a cat who cares deeply for others, and strives to improve their lives or make them smile, if she can. Truth be told, she didn’t love the retaliation against the other clans, and refused to be involved in the killing of them. She didn’t oppose the actions fully however, as she was grieving the loss of her kit alongside her mate Burntheart, and knew their clan would suffer more losses if something wasn’t done. Despite enjoying caring for others, she doesn’t like the Medicine cat Glowfish very much, feeling as though her inexperience as a Medicine cat was what prevented her kit from being saved after the attack. She knows it’s unfair to blame her, yet she cannot stop herself. She's becoming increasingly under fire from clanmates, for continuing to hold this pointless grudge.

Yarrowfur: Yarrowfur is a young warrior, having been an apprentice at the time of the attack. She’s a careful and thoughtful molly, always taking time to choose her words carefully. She gets along best with other mollies, with Cherryfreckle being her closest friend. Truth be told, she’s head-over-paws for the other molly, but is content to love her from afar and just be friends, knowing how happy Cherryfreckle is with her mate.

Oaknettle: Oaknettle is an excellent fighter and hunter, and isn’t shy at all about boasting his skills, despite being a younger warrior. He is often overheard saying things like he 'could take down a dog by himself'. He’s not all hot air, as the tom really does have many skills to back up his claims, but he’s young enough still that most of the clan dismiss him with a chuckle or roll of the eyes. He’s absolutely gunning for leadership one day, and is also beginning to form a crush on Oddthistle, as her charismatic words and ambition words have a way of drawing him in. He is really not a fan of the other clans, having lost both parents and a sibling in the attack. Talonpaw: Talonpaw is a very loyal cat, to her friends and clan. She thinks of the whole clan as family, especially as they raised her after she lost her parents in the battle. She is fond of her mentor Cherryfreckle, and even when not training, they can often be found chatting. She’s eager to become a warrior, and join Oatnettle soon.

Locustgaze: Locustgaze is a fierce cat, who was vital in supporting her mate as he regrouped and then took revenge for their clan. She retired shortly after they settled into the caves, but she is still not to be messed with, as most of the clan is well aware. Her mate spends a lot of time with her discussing the goings-on in the clan, and he values her advice a lot. She loves to teach younger cats, and has told the story of their clan countless times. She left a permanent scar on the Hayclan leader’s face, and won't let anyone forget it! ~ This is the first generation of Cavernclan cats! Hope you enjoy!

The Ledge #591: Halloween

It's become a Halloween tradition for this show to celebrate the holiday with over two hours of spooky music. As it is the ultimate rock and roll holiday, it's never hard to find enough new tunes to fill a show, and this year is no exception. This is a show that should be the soundtrack to your Halloween party, or give the trick or treaters a real treat by blasting this at your front door. After all, they need to be "Ledge-ified" at an early age.

Even this week's entry in the "52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks" fits the spooky theme. Well, at least band's name does. Ghost Of An American Airman was a Belfast band that formed in the mid-80s, and released a handful of records over the next decade. Like I do every week, however, I must again plead with y'all for more versions of "Teenage Kicks". 19/03/2020 - Business et Marketing

Le 31 mars 2016, Sony a arrêté de commercialiser les cassettes vierges Betamax dont il avait arrêté la fabrication dès 2002. Cette annonce marque le dernier acte d’une guerre commerciale sans merci:

La guerre des magnétoscopes.

Nous sommes en 1975, Sony révolutionne le monde de l’image en proposant un appareil novateur qui marque un incroyable tournant technologique en proposant le premier appareil non-professionnel permettant d’enregistrer et de diffuser des images animées: LE MAGNETOSCOPE BETAMAX.

A une époque où la France ne comptait encore que trois chaînes et les télévisions à tube cathodique des meubles imposants à la qualité d’image capricieuse, le BETAMAX marque un gap technologique incroyable. A peu près à la même période, le hollandais Philips, qui en 1962 avait réalisé un exploit similaire avec la cassette audio lance son propre format: Le V2000. Dans la foulée, le japonais JVC lance son propre format le VHS et contrairement aux deux autres, décide de céder sous licences son format à d’autres constructeurs (Panasonic, Thomson, Hitachi, Brandt, Toshiba, Goldstar ...). La bataille commerciale peut commencer.

Premier concurrent à entrer en lice, le Betamax peut s’appuyer sur une qualité d’image remarquable et un appareil plus compact et connait un rapide succès sur le marché américain malgré un prix extravagant d'environ 11 000 Francs (soit plus de deux mois de salaires moyens de l’époque). De plus, les premières cassettes Betamax souffrent d’un gros défaut en ne durant pas plus d'une heure, ce qui ne permettaient pas d’enregistrer un événement sportif en entier ou un film.

En Europe, le V2000 qui offre aussi une bonne qualité d’image, présente l’avantage de ralentis et d’avance rapide quasi parfaits (souvenez-vous, les bandes grises de vos VHS quand vous faisiez avance rapide, le V200 n’en avait pas) et permet la lecture et enregistrement double-face (mais moins d’une heure ici aussi). La VHS arrive plus tardivement sur le marché (1979 sur le marché français). Sa qualité d’image est moins bonne mais ils sortent rapidement des K7 de 180 minutes. Et puis, le prix est beaucoup plus attractifs puisque les magnétoscopes passent enfin en dessous des 10000 francs.

En 1981, soit 5 ans après les premiers appareils (ce qui correspond au temps nécessaire pour passer de la technologie au grand public), tous les éléments, au Japon, aux USA et en Europe, sont réunis pour qu’éclate la guerre commerciale. Cette année-là, 3 Millions d’unités sont vendus dans le monde: 300 000 V2000 (essentiellement en Europe), 1,5 M de Betamax (prime au premier arrivé), 1,2 M de VHS.

Les positions restent stables (et auraient pu rester figer) jusqu’à trois décisions qui vont changer le court de la bataille:

En 1982, la Paramount, Warner, Universal et Disney font un procès à Sony (comptant sur la jurisprudence pour les autres fabricants) pour violation des droits d’auteur. Sony gagne le procès en 1984 mais a perdu beaucoup d’énergie et d’argent dans la bataille juridique au profit de ses concurrents).

Le prix des appareils a baissé, s’est stabilisé et n’est pas favorable à Sony: 1000 $ contre 300 pour le VHS (8000 francs pour Betamax, 6000 pour V200 contre moins de 2000 pour le VHS en France).

Mais c’est surtout la décision de Sony de refuser son format à l’industrie pornographique qui va tout décider. L’industrie du sexe a été et est, assez surprenamment toujours à la pointe des technologies (souvenez du minitel rose par exemple) et elle saisit rapidement le formidable potentiel du magnétoscope pour la diffusion de leurs produits. Bien que plus cher, ils privilégient d’abord le Betamax plus qualitatif mais devant le refus de Sony, se portent sur la VHS. Les cassettes vidéo “de cul” connaissent rapidement le succès dans les sexes shop qui en viennent rapidement à proposer des cassettes à la location. Alors en pleins démêlés juridiques avec Sony, les majors du cinéma saisissent l’opportunité commerciale et alimentent un nouveau réseau de diffusion les vidéo-clubs, avec notamment une grande chaîne : Blockbuster Videos (qui a fait faillite depuis). En 1982, Disney met en vente pour la première fois une cassette vidéo (Trois caballeros) avant de cartonner avec Cendrillon.

Il est désormais acquis que le procès des majors n’avait d’autres buts que de favoriser l’essor du VHS (qu’ils avaient choisi pour des raisons de coûts) au dépens du Betamax.

Sony réutilisera sa technologie auprès des professionnels et s’en servira pour ses caméscopes (le Betacam).

Comme la cassette audio le fut par le CD, la VHS, pourtant maîtresse absolue des années 80, sera supplantée par le DVD dans les années 90, qui lui-même le sera dans les années 2000 par le divx qui lui-même cède la place au streaming actuellement. Jusqu’à ce qu’une nouvelle technologie prenne le pas. Un clou chasse l’autre ... c’est la roue du commerce ...

What Educators Can Learn from a 7-Year-Old About Cultivating a Passion for STEM

What motivates students to excel in STEM may be less about the classroom or curriculum, and more about their individual interests and ambitions. But how do teachers tap into their particular passions to inspire them to achieve in the classroom—and throughout life?

Most multi-day conferences kick off with high-profile celebrities, authors or “thought leaders.” Not so at EdSurge’s first Fusion conference. As about 600 eager adults filled the Marriott ballroom in San Francisco for the opening session, EdSurge CEO Betsy Corcoran, in concert with Digital Promise CEO Karen Cator, introduced a trio of students who would set the tone for the next three days.

The YouTube videos were long enough to keep me busy while my mother was sleeping, and it inspired my mind to love science.

“We often ask, ‘Who is that amazing educator who made a difference?” Corcoran told the audience. For Fusion, she tweaked the script: “We wanted to start the day by thinking about who was that amazing student who made a difference in our lives. Who was that student who was so compelling, how did they get the courage and the tenacity to do what they do and persevere?”

These are no ordinary students. For two of the three, this was not their first time in the spotlight.

Zaina Siyed, a 17-year-old high school student from California, is known for pushing back on negative Muslim stereotypes by competing in robotics competitions through her nonprofit, FemSTEM. Her work was recently featured in an L.A. Times article. Nate Butkus, a 7-year-old elementary student from Illinois, started his science podcast and recently appeared on the Ellen Show. Jeremiah Jones, a 16-year-old musician, motivational speaker and entrepreneur was recently awarded for his community nonprofit work by Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti.

Though diverse in racial composition, age and socioeconomic and geographical backgrounds, these students shared one thing in common: Personal circumstances, outside of the classroom, inspired them to create and work in STEM fields.

While my dad and I were waiting for my mom to wake up, [he] needed a way for me to stop screaming, so we decided to start watching videos of the Mars Rover,” Butkus explained to the crowd. “The YouTube videos were long enough to keep me busy while my mother was sleeping, and it inspired my mind to love science.”

When asked why Siyed wanted to start a nonprofit for Muslim women, she noted the lack of positive representation of women of color in the media. She specifically cited the incident where Ghazala Khan, silently standing next to her husband, Khizr Khan, during the 2017 Democratic National Convention, was criticized by President Donald Trump. “The stories that came from the situation with Khizr Khan’s wife at the [Democratic National Convention] hit me. The goldstar mother who was being asked why wasn’t she speaking? It is because she is oppressed? It is because she is Muslim? That is the representation we see on the news,” Siyed explained in an EdSurge interview.

Siyed saw tech as a place where Muslim women could gain positive media attention. “The world of tech is the most influential world right now to be in, so I thought if I can inspire some other girls and they can be in the forefront, then we can start hearing news stories about Muslim women in tech who are leaders,” she continued.

Jones, who grew up in a rough part of Los Angeles and witnessed many of his peers being bullied and struggling with low self-esteem, said those experiences inspired him to try to change his community.

Throughout the panel, the students were brimming with self-confidence, uttering phrases like ‘believe in yourself and you can do it.’ And when pressed for actionable tips they offered some solid advice behind stage.

“Giving students a sense of the bigger picture, giving them meaning by letting them know their work can translate into a career, and letting students know that there are others in their same situation was very useful for me,” says Siyed. Also, she adds that “online communities are really important to be engaged in and that is something teachers can really try to connect their students with.”

In addition, Siyed notes the importance of relatability, recounting how mentorship from other Muslim women in STEM-inspired her to do her work. Butkus’ mother echoed those sentiments, describing how her son’s public school, in an effort to personalize the learning experience, paired him with a teacher that shared his passion for science.

Butkus’ teachers have also recognized his passion, embedding his podcasts within their science lessons and sharing his media coverage—including the appearance on Ellen—with his peers. His precocious knowledge of science also earned a spot co-teaching science for first-grade students. This validation and acknowledgment of Butkus’ passion, his mother notes, has encouraged other students in his class to start their own YouTube channels geared towards learning.

Yet, Siyed notes that teachers with many objectives, deadlines and testing constraints might have difficulty tapping into passions that don’t perfectly align with school curricula. “My school and some of my teachers are supportive of my work on the outside, but it is tough for teachers to replicate the kind of experience that I am giving to middle school girls,” says Siyed. “You have to have a much more fluid and much more dynamic teaching style.”
