My Peak TV Journey: *The Good Fight*
I watched all of The Good Wife on CBS as it aired from almost the beginning. I had mixed feelings about the series finale, so I was slow to get around to The Good Fight, its spin-off/sequel. Coincidentally, it was the decision to move Evil, from the same creators, Robert and Michelle King. The two shows became my reason for a part-of-the-year subscription to Paramount+.  Now that The Good Fight has wrapped up, I miss it. Months later I  think about that series finale and how it did not feel like a series finale. It never tried to make sense of its crazy world, or ours on which it was loosely based. There is another spin off scheduled for this fall. It will be starring Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Taccioni, a character who appeared on both series. But it will not follow up on all the various plots here, because that would not be worthwhile. (Also, according to recent news, it will be set in New York City, where all of these shows are filmed.)
Though the series was introducing major characters until the last season, so maybe they will revisit them. The final season brought in Andre Braugher as Ri’Chard Lane, a real showman of a lawyer. Every episode he wore different, often wild, glasses. His story for the season was about how he fit in the firm, but he is richly drawn enough. The character’s frequent and loud proclamations of faith were off putting to me. But there are plenty of details about his life that I would be happy to revisit and see more of. The penultimate season introduced the mysterious Carmen Moya and every time I saw her I wanted more of her. Marissa and her father, the Rahm Emmanuel inspired, Eli Gold are probably done. His last episode was shocking and appropriate as a send off. Each of the episodes in the season was titled “The End of…” and “The End of Eli Gold” felt like the most appropriate title. Marissa’s life could be check in on again, but it looks like it will become something completely different than what we’ve seen.
I definitely feel like I have seen enough of Diane Lockhart's journey. I still like the character, but choosing to stay with her husband Kurt McVeigh, despite the way their political differences meant he could never be trusted was choosing a stasis that I'm done with.
I'd be happy to check in on Liz Reddick and her complicate family again.
The final season involved non stop protests outside the law firm’s offices and regular threats of violence from mostly unknown sources. I spent a lot of my watching time wondering what it said about politics. Was it doing a “both sides” thing? How does it fit in with the mostly rightwing talking points of violence in Chicago? Months later, those worries have mostly melted away. It was more about capturing the feel of the moment than making a statement about it.
Thought that does to bring up some of the ways that this series is going to age weirdly. Its plotting choice leaded into being a product of its time so even a couple of years after an episode originally aired a viewer finds themselves thinking things like “remember the pee tape”?  And really after a little time, it is so irrelevant to life it is better forgotten. But it is funny to look back at what a big deal we made of the whole thing.

Dark Crystal Book Recommendations!
So, I’ve had this thought for a while now, and since half the world is in quarantine right now, I figured now would be a good time as ever to post this.
Here are the books that I have personally read that I feel represents these characters best.
Deet --> The Reader by Traci Chee
Sefia knows what it means to survive. After her father is brutally murdered, she flees into the wilderness with her aunt Nin, who teaches her to hunt, track, and steal. But when Nin is kidnapped, leaving Sefia completely alone, none of her survival skills can help her discover where Nin’s been taken, or if she’s even alive. The only clue to both her aunt’s disappearance and her father’s murder is the odd rectangular object her father left behind, an object she comes to realize is a book—a marvelous item unheard of in her otherwise illiterate society. With the help of this book, and the aid of a mysterious stranger with dark secrets of his own, Sefia sets out to rescue her aunt and find out what really happened the day her father was killed—and punish the people responsible.
Brea --> The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima
Times are hard in the mountain city of Fellsmarch. Reformed thief Han Alister will do almost anything to eke out a living for his family. The only thing of value he has is something he can't sell—the thick silver cuffs he's worn since birth. They're clearly magicked—as he grows, they grow, and he's never been able to get them off. One day, Han and his clan friend, Dancer, confront three young wizards setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea. Han takes an amulet from Micah Bayar, son of the High Wizard, to keep him from using it against them. Soon Han learns that the amulet has an evil history—it once belonged to the Demon King, the wizard who nearly destroyed the world a millennium ago. With a magical piece that powerful at stake, Han knows that the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back. Meanwhile, Raisa ana'Marianna, princess heir of the Fells, has her own battles to fight. She's just returned to court after three years of freedom in the mountains—riding, hunting, and working the famous clan markets. Raisa wants to be more than an ornament in a glittering cage. She aspires to be like Hanalea—the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. But her mother has other plans for her...
Rian --> Red Rising by Peirce Brown
"I live for the dream that my children will be born free," she says. "That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them." "I live for you," I say sadly. Eo kisses my cheek. "Then you must live for more." Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies... even if it means he has to become one of them to do so
Seladon  --> Heartless by Marrisa Meyer
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen. Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans
Naia --> Dread Nation by Justina Ireland
Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville—derailing the War Between the States and changing America forever. In this new nation, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Reeducation Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead. But there are also opportunities—and Jane is studying to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. It’s a chance for a better life for Negro girls like Jane. After all, not even being the daughter of a wealthy white Southern woman could save her from society’s expectations. But that’s not a life Jane wants. Almost finished with her education at Miss Preston’s School of Combat in Baltimore, Jane is set on returning to her Kentucky home and doesn’t pay much mind to the politics of the eastern cities, with their talk of returning America to the glory of its days before the dead rose. But when families around Baltimore County begin to go missing, Jane is caught in the middle of a conspiracy, one that finds her in a desperate fight for her life against some powerful enemies. And the restless dead, it would seem, are the least of her problems.
Gurjin and Kylan  --> The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
@Jenskira would be happy to see her raven sons on this list.
“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.” It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little. For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.
Tavra and Onica --> Seafire by Natalie C Parker.
After her family is killed by corrupt warlord Aric Athair and his bloodthirsty army of Bullets, Caledonia Styx is left to chart her own course on the dangerous and deadly seas. She captains her ship, the Mors Navis, with a crew of girls and women just like her, who have lost their families and homes because of Aric and his men. The crew has one mission: stay alive, and take down Aric's armed and armored fleet. But when Caledonia's best friend and second-in-command barely survives an attack thanks to help from a Bullet looking to defect, Caledonia finds herself questioning whether to let him join their crew. Is this boy the key to taking down Aric Athair once and for all . . . or will he threaten everything the women of the Mors Navis have worked for?

How did you meet your best friends? You always have the most interesting stories about them.
aw, well they’re all very interesting people ♡ i’ll go in order of the timeline in which i met them.
andrea: my childhood friend(marrisa) & i were walking from my house to the high school for a football game(we were in 7th grade at the time). we weren’t really into sports at all, but everyone just kind of went to games to hangout. & in 7th grade mar & i were total scene queens. so, you know, we had the big, ratty hair. it was a little windy, & as we were walking, we noticed two girls across the street who also had teased hair. mar grabbed my hand & we bolted to the other side of the road so she could ask the girls if they had hairspray on them, because we certainly couldn’t risk looking a mess with flat hair. & one girl(andrea!) did! a cute, tiny can of aquanet! so she let mar use it, & then we ended up complimenting each other’s style & walking to the game together. we all got along really well, so i invited them all to stay the night at my house, & for the rest of that summer andrea & i were completely inseparable. she practically lived with me throughout 7th & 8th grade. now she lives two blocks away from me & even though i don’t get to see her as often as i’d like due to our work schedules never lining up, we are still the absolute best of friends!
arthur: six years ago i ran an art blog on here, maybe a few of you remember it? one day i got a message from some arthur rimbaud-obsessed kid that just said “wow, you have good taste in music, we should get married” & oddly enough, i almost did end up marrying him. we skyped all the time & talked on the phone daily, & he finally asked me out. i said yes, we eventually moved in together in a little town on the ocean, got engaged. although we eventually decided that we were better off as friends. arthur & i are still inseparable, all these many years later! i’m going to visit him & his new boyfriend in less than two weeks, actually! he’s my platonic soul mate & i’ll probably never be closer to another human being than i am to him. i love him so fucking much.
millie: a couple years ago i was antique shopping with my mother in some adorable little town, when all of a sudden this adorable girl with a bob cut & a wednesday addams dress walked in. i was super nervous to compliment her because at the time, i was dressed head to toe in leather & fringe, wearing heels that brought me over 6 feet tall, so i didn’t want to come across as anything other than genuinely nice. but! as she was checking out i told her she looked cute, & that was that. we didn’t exchange numbers, i didn’t think i’d really ever see her again, but i remember leaving the shop wondering what kind of music she listens to, for some reason. then, sometime last year, i was looking for new blogs to follow on tumblr, & i found hers, but i hadn’t yet realised that i’d met her in person before. as i was scrolling through her archive, i came across a photo of her where she was holding a stuffed bunny, the same bunny i have that i bought from a local shop! suddenly it clicked that she must be from wisconsin if we have the same stuffed animal. so i checked her “about me”, & sure enough! i messaged her asking if she was the girl i’d met at the antique shop & she told me she was! ever since then we’ve been hanging out as often as our schedules allow. i’m super grateful to know her, she’s one of the most badass people i’ve ever met, & with a heart of gold, too.
mason: i’ve already sort of talked about how we met. he started working with me & i was the one who was meant to train him, but i get really uncomfortable around men, so i kind of passed him off to this other girl i work with. upon meeting him, i honestly had no interest in befriending him. not because i didn’t like him! i thought he was cute & friendly instantly, but i make a point of not getting too close to coworkers. i don’t like anything interfering with my work ethic. but when we started working with each other more, it was very evident that we had the same, dead-pan, self-deprecating sense of humour & that he was the only person i could comfortably joke about my mental state with  without having them worry about me, & vice versa. we have been friends for less than a year, but i cherish him so much already. we have gone on more adventures than i have with all of my family combined within the short amount of time i’ve known him. he’s one of my favourite people in the world, i really do love him.

Ruby’s Golf Society
Everyone looked forward to our first Trophy game of the year and the day did not disappoint. The fixture was held at Vistabella where the course played well and the weather excellent, there was some very good scores returned with several over the mid 30 points.  A small slip up by one of our lady members took 6 burly golfers and a lot of raking to put right, luckily there was no damage caused. Results on the day were, nearest the pin on the par 3's were Chris Waddington and Michelle Evans (3). Nearest the pin in two was Nigel Wright, best front nine Rob Vaughan and best back Nigel Wright. Gold division winner Alan Mattey, silver division and overall winner (on count back) was ex captain Dave Shelton. We returned to the Raso rooms on El Raso for our presentation and where we enjoyed a nice buffet provided by hosts Marrisa and Jamie. Our next game at La Serena is fully booked, but if you require any information about fixtures or the society please email us at [email protected]

Hey girl, hey and happy Sunday! This past Saturday was St. Patrick’s Day. Fun fact for you all, I am in fact part Irish. No, I’m not saying it just so it would give me an excuse to get belligerent and wild on St. Patrick’s Day. My dad’s part of the family actually started back in Ireland. We were known as Le’ Grande back in the day before the family took on the last name Banks. So in honor of St. Patrick’s Day I thought I’d do the Kiss Me I’m Irish book tag once again. I did this tag last year and I tried hard not to pick the same books or series but it was really hard.
The tag was originally started by Erica SOS Books in 2015. Go and check out her channel! On with the questions!
1) Green – a book with a green book. Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs. Bam! Easy one again this year! If you have been with me for a while you would know I love the Miss. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series so of course I had to get the spin off novel to the series.
2) Blarney – a book that deceived you into either liking it or it was over hyped and you ended up disliking it. For this one I chose Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I never thought I’d pick this series up. It’s so hyped up in the book community and that style of fantasy is not my cup of tea but I am loving this series! I’m currently finishing up The Assassin’s Blade and I just got Crown of Midnight so I wouldn’t have to wait until my next payday to get it.
3) Brogue or Dialect – a book where one or more of the characters has an accent. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It’s been a while since I’ve read this book but if I’m not mistaken there are characters with a German accent…I think.
4) Leprechaun – a book you enjoyed when you were a little person. For this I chose A series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. I started reading this beauty of a series way back in middle school and loved it. I don’t own any books from the series because I rented out the books from our school library but this tag is making me want to start a collection.
5) Pot of Gold- A book that cost a lot or is of great value to you. Never Go Back by Dr. Henry Cloud. I was given this last year from a member of my church. When I first tried to read it it didn’t make any sense to me. This year I read and it all makes perfect sense. Last year was not my time or my season for reading this novel. Everything has a season. This year I’ve been feeling stuck as to where I should go in terms of my future and this book helped me a lot.
6) Four leaf clover or shamrock – four leaves – more than one book. Pick your favorite series. This year I chose The Lunar Chronicles by Marrisa Meyer. I love how badass all of the female heroes are. Even the main villain is so badass that I’m sometimes conflicted then I remember she tried to force marriage onto a child in the most basic sense of one of the many plots. Then I remember to hate her again.
7) Magic – a book that you found magical or a book where you enjoyed a magic element that was in the story line. I know this book is far from literal magic but I still found it magical. Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson really hit home for me. I found it kind of magical how and an introvert found friends on her own and started to really see you don’t really need a person to have a good time. You can make a good time happen on your own.
8) Kiss – your current favorite book pairing or your all time favorite book pairing. When it comes to book pairings I can’t leave out Magnus and Alec. I love everything that this couple stands for. Magnus and Alec is the first time I’ve personally seen a gay couple represented in young adult fiction and I love it and love how much more representation I’m seeing in young adult genre.
9) Luck – a book on your shelf that you’ll luckily get to…someday. For this question I chose An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. I know absolutely nothing about this book. I just know I’m in love with the title and the book cover is pretty. I want to get into it just to see what it’s about.
10) Jig – a book you don’t own currently own but if you could get a hold of it – it would make you dance for joy. I’m patiently waiting for Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare to be released. It’s hard to wait patiently when I really want to snatch it as quickly as possible. But I guess I have to wait patiently with everyone else.
11) Rainbow – that’s you! Tag friends to do this tag! Well I’m not sure how many people will do this tag days after St. Patrick’s Day tag after St. Patrick’s Day but hey maybe we can turn this into an Irish Pride thing! So I tag whoever wants to do this tag!
