Review: Trying (Series 3)
The third series of Apple TV’s Trying proves a bit of a disappointment as it goes too sweet “Never mind the spuds love, this is an emergency” Over two seasons, Apple TV series Trying has utterly charmed me, Andy Wolton’s writing nailing the perfect bittersweet Britflick tone to make this a genuinely affecting look at the challenges of contemporary city living for a no-longer-quite-that-young…

Round Of Ap-Paws For Charity Pet Wellbeing Centre
New Post has been published on https://petnews2day.com/pet-industry-news/pet-charities/round-of-ap-paws-for-charity-pet-wellbeing-centre/
Round Of Ap-Paws For Charity Pet Wellbeing Centre
Local pets have given a huge round of ap-paws to vet charity PDSA, which opened the doors to its brand new Pet Wellbeing Centre in Nottingham on Monday 17th October.
The Paw-fficial Opening
Singer and People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Danyl Johnson visited to officially cut the pink ribbon to open the centre. He was joined by the charity’s vet team, Director General Jan McLoughlin and Deputy Chairman John Miller.
The purpose-built Nottingham PDSA Pet Wellbeing Centre, The Marian and Christina Ionescu Hospital, on Radford Road, Basford, replaces the charity’s old site on Dunkirk Road.
Discussing the opening, PDSA Senior Vet Sarah Brown said, “PDSA has been caring for pets in Nottingham since 1927, when the charity first opened a dispensary in the city. Now, nearly a century later, we’re thrilled to formally open a brand new, much-needed centre to support pets and people in need in Nottingham. Our services continue to be a vital lifeline for owners struggling to provide care for their pets and it’s a privilege to start this positive new chapter to help those most vulnerable in the local community.
“It’s been a long road but the team and I are completely bowled over by our new home. The old hospital on Dunkirk Road holds many memories, and helped so many people and their beloved pets over the years, so the team was sad to leave. However, we are really excited to welcome our pet patients to this fabulous new facility for many more years to come.”
Paws For Support
The new Wellbeing Centre comprises a bigger, brighter waiting area, with separate areas for cats and dogs. It is specifically designed by the charity to help make visiting the vet a stress-free experience and houses improved kennel facilities to help give pets a more comfortable recovery from surgery.
The facility features eight spacious consulting rooms, a room dedicated to phone consultations – a first for the charity – two operating theatres and a diagnostic room. Additionally, they have digital x-ray facilities, the latest diagnostic and surgical equipment and a bigger car park to allow easier access for pets and their owners.
The hospital will also help train and educate the next generation of veterinary surgeons through its links with the University of Nottingham. The centre includes a large, dedicated training room especially for veterinary students.
Sarah continued, “We are so grateful to every single supporter and organisation that has donated to help this fantastic new hospital become a reality. On behalf of everyone at PDSA, I offer special thanks to Mr and Mrs Ionescu, whom the hospital is named after, players of People’s Postcode Lottery and the University of Nottingham for their generous support.”
Player Support
“We were delighted to welcome People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Danyl to help us mark our opening day,” said PDSA Senior Vet Sarah Brown.
Speaking on behalf of People’s Postcode Lottery, Danyl Johnson, added, “It’s fantastic to see the amazing Nottingham PDSA Pet Wellbeing Centre open and helping poorly pets, thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. PDSA does fantastic work helping to care for the sick and injured pets of people struggling financially in Nottingham, and it can now do so in this excellent new facility which will help pet owners now and in the future.”
PDSA’s dedicated team of vets, vet nurses and support staff in Nottingham helps over 10,000 pets a year, treating around 129 pet patients every single day.
The centre, which cost £3.7 Million to build and equip, was funded thanks to the generous donations of supporters and members of the public. PDSA receives no government funding towards its vital veterinary care, and it costs the charity nearly £1.2 Million a year to run its life-saving service in Nottingham.
Making A Difference

Monday Marian Mulling:Our Lady of Knock
On August 21, 1879, two local women, Mary McLoughlin and Mary Beirne, were returning home in the rain. On passing the rear of the Knock village church, they saw a miraculous sight. Our Lady, St Joseph and St John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of the church. Mary was dressed in a large white cloak, fastened at the neck, with her hands and eyes facing upwards in prayer towards Heaven.…

Animal Healthcare Market – A Scottish View
Scotland Animal Healthcare Market – Overview
The Kansa City Animal Health Corridor is quite well known among those keeping a tab on the animal health care market. The Kansas corridor is the epicenter of all the organizations related to healthcare in North America, accounting for greater than 80 percent of the revenue generated in animal healthcare in North America annually. The corridor functions by providing the interested stake holders with a common ground for interaction and collaboration with top notch market/industry leaders which aids in the growth of the company. The above is an example from North America, but on the same lines, similar developments are taking place in the country of Scotland to translate it into a hub of healthcare for animals in Europe.
The building blocks to help make Scotland the ideal center for aquaculture research and animal healthcare have already been laid. The demographics of the country also aid in the process as about 50 percent of the spending on veterinary healthcare of the United Kingdom if being offered to Scotland. Furthermore, the ample availability of natural for the prospering of the industry is one of the major factors for the choice of Scotland to be established as the European epicenter for veterinary health care. The Roslin Institute has helped in generating annual profits of more than £250 million in the arenas of genetic and breeding research. Also, there are more than a thousand researchers in the country working on the innovation of the veterinary healthcare industry. Vaccines used for the immunization of respiratory problems in sheep and cattle were first created in Scotland. The high availability of skilled labor, good infrastructure and rapid innovation in R&D are the major factors, which, coupled with the steps being taken by the Scottish government, are expected to yield positive results in establishing Scotland as the hub for animal health care in Europe.
There are quite a number of world renowned companies in the animal healthcare industry in Scotland. The Fish Vet Group, which is a subsidiary of Benchmark Holdings, is one of them. The Fish Vet Group has begun operations on a fish farm in the coastal areas of Scotland and has now robustly expanded into a global leader of health services for aquatic animals. Favorable demographics offered by the country have surely aided the company in its journey onward to become a global leader in the market. Furthermore, Veterinary diagnostics, healthcare, and environmental aspect control are among a few services offered by the company. Recently, the company was in the news for the launch of its operations in Thailand, which is one of the largest aquaculture markets on the planet. Top notch researchers are being attracted to work for the company to innovate and further its operations. The world renowned Salmonid Specialist Dr. Marian McLoughlin, is among the latest minds to join the company, which speaks a lot about the brand of the company. The company also acquired Vet Aqua International, which is an Ireland based company, which has further established their position in the market. The company’s presence has now expanded to Ireland, Thailand, Norway, and the USA, all of which are seasoned markets which will undoubtedly aid the company in furthering its ambitions.
One of the major factors which aided the global growth of The Fish Vet Group was the very supportive government policies which provided the required resources for the company to grow and even acquire other market players. Keeping in mind the increasing demand pressures in the veterinary healthcare market it can be concluded that Scotland is one of the growing hotspots of animal health care in the world. The case study of The Fish Vet group can act as example for other market players to launch their business operations in the country.

As society continues to battle sexism in all industries, young women are searching for strong and confident female role models who will stand up for gender equality. The Girls by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth is a new musical comedy that tackles societal ideals and on-going gender stereotypes through the acceptance of others.
In order to raise money for a hospital settee in honour of Annie’s (Joanna Riding) husband, six Yorkshire women from the Women’s Institute pose nude for a calendar. The Girls observes the passions and insecurities women face through approval from everyday relationships.
Every woman in this musical was seeking some form of approval and acceptance of others: Chris (Claire Moore) was trying to be a good mother and wife, Ruth (Debbie Chazen) was trying to be an upstanding and forgiving spouse, and Cora (Claire Machin) was trying to be a good single mother and father. The script was written in a way that every obstacle the women faced, they were always looking for acceptance over their actions. The perception that women have this constant need for acceptance made the female characters weak and less admirable. Also, in an attempt to take a look at all of the girls’ lives, the narrative of the script was choppy. The focus was on the choices of these women and how it affected their families, when in reality we wanted to learn more about the bond that brought these six women together. The bond between women is an emotional drive that tells a story and it was lost in this show.
The defining aspect of a musical is the score that leads the entire show. The songwriting was weak in the sense that the lyrics had no emotional connection with the story. The songs lacked a sense of female empowerment by pointing out what society sees as flaws of woman; thus, creating an emotional disconnect. It was clear that a woman did not write this musical because the lyrics of “What Age Expects” and “So I Had A Little Work Done” were powerless and far too repetitive. These songs should have been so emotionally moving that any woman of any shape, size or age wanted to jump up ready to pose nude. However, it looked as though the women on stage were still timid about embracing the idea of a nude calendar even when they had to take their robes off.
The Girls has a talented cast with powerful voices that performed beautifully. It’s a light and easy show to watch on a night out with your girlfriends. The gimmicky songs will be quickly forgotten, but the inspiring story of the six women posing nude for a calendar will not. The concept of this musical comedy was interesting, but perhaps The Girls was at its best as a play.
