2022 Beijing Olympics - Team Event Review - Remining Countries
In contention for a medal: None.
Georgia, Germany, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic all have only one entry in each discipline so it makes predicting their strategy easy :)
Team Georgia
Realistically the only country out of the four that has a chance to finish top 5 and to qualify for the FS segment. All four of their entries can perform well and if any country underperforms, Georgia it right there ready to take over.
First (and only) Strategy - No switches:
Men - Morisi Kvitelashvili
Dance - Kazakova/Reviya
Women - Anastasiia Gubanova
Pairs - Safina/Berulava
Team Germany
First (and only) Strategy - No switches:
Men - Paul Fentz
Dance - Müller/Dieck
Women - Nicole Schott
Pairs - Hase/Seegert*
*With Seegert testng postivie for COVID today, there’s a big change Germany will have to withdraw from the team event.
Team Ukraine
First (and only) Strategy - No switches:
Men - Ivan Shmuratko
Dance - Nazarova/Nikitin
Women - Anastasiia Shabotova
Pairs - Holichenko/Darenskyi
Team Czech Republic
First (and only) Strategy - No switches:

Ukrainian test skates
I saw some of the videos from the test skates and decided that I should make a separate post about it because Ivan Shmuratko and Andrei Kokura deserve all the love ;)
Ivan skates to Cinema Paradiso in the SP and then to Nuvole bianche by Einaudi in the free and he’s just so light on the ice and his skating is beautiful to watch.
Andrei Kokura is a new discovery for me. He skates to Crack of Doom (SP) and Casanova (FP, recycled). He is so musical and expressive. The way he moves 😍 Technically, it wasn’t that great, e.g. his preparation for jumps is really long but the step and choreo sequences are on fire!
Then there’s a pair Sofia Holichenko/Artem Darenskyi. They teamed up last season, before that he skated with Sofia Nesterova (she retired). I quite liked their FP to Under the bridge. It made even choreographically more sense than the SP for me.
They interrupted the program, though. At first it looked like they missed the entry into the death spiral and then waited to begin again after the spiral but as I saw also the ice dancers skipped parts of their programs it seemed more planned. Maybe it was too early for all of them to skate the whole program...
Now that I think about it, it makes total sense! All skaters skated their SP (RD) and FP (FD) on the same day with a two hour break! Ufff...
And now three ice dance teams.  Myroslava Tkachenko/Andriy Kapra Come get it bae / Sign of the times I saw them for the first time and to be honest don’t remember much about the programs. Apart from their commitment to the performance in the RD.
Maria Golubtsova/Kyryl Bieloborov My tunnels are long and dark these days / Impossible love, Lento This RD is more “elegant” than the majority I’ve seen where the skaters really go more in the hip hop and street dance direction, here they are wild but more festive :D I get it that ISU wants to popularize figure skating among young potential viewers, in Olympic season on top of that, so the judges might prefer the hip-hopy dances more but I liked this one more.  And I loved the FD! I love the slow dramatic.
Aleksandra Nazarova/Maxim Nikitin - ? / Rivederti, Backstage romance I love them so much, so I’ll wait with any evaluation. They do their stuff, great lifts, sliding moves... but I’m not into the RD. Maybe it’s because generally, I don’t like blues or because I don’t know which song they skate to and am distracted by this... The FD looks like it will be more light-hearted but let’s wait and see.

Atonement for La Sonnambula: Florez, Pisaroni, Fally and Nazarova in Vienna Staatsoper, January 13th, 2017.
Atonement for La Sonnambula: Florez, Pisaroni, Fally and Nazarova in Vienna Staatsoper, January 13th, 2017.
To get into opera travel on Friday, 13th might be an adventurous proposal even for the least superstitious opera fan as it turned out. Flight delay, mad dash by a taxi from the airport to arrive at the evening box office to collect the ticket just 5 minutes to start, then get changed in a cramped ladies room, persuade cloakroom attendant to take the suitcase, and arrange for check-in to B&B…

Victor Patrenko Cup entry #8
Senior Free Dance
Fear/Waddell(GBR)
Thoughts: the twizzles could’ve done with a touch more speed at times. I mean nothing has changed. These two are still lovely. The radar has standards though.
Nazarova/Nikitin(UKR)
Thoughts: Alexandra always manages to impress me in a matter of 3 seconds but here, I have to say Maxim made me incredibly happy as well.
Junior Women free skate
Maria Khilobok(UKR)
Thoughts: that pink flower belt on her dress was lovely.
Margarita Grishina(UKR)
Thoughts: me wanting to give her effort points for struggling thorough this and not collapsing from exhaustion. Especially after that fall on the double sal combo, ouch.
Alina Andriyevska(UKR)
Thoughts: I’m not usually one for the dresses with the large cutout in the back but on Alina, it worked. It made her look taller.
Paula Nelsone(LAT)
Thoughts: so sorry to see the pretty swan fall out of her spin at the end

1 NAZAROVA Oleksandra / NIKITIN Maksym
Taking in the moment of those Olympic Rings. Classy move. Score 97.34. 162.87
2 GARABEDIAN Tina / PROULX SENECAL Simon
This music takes me back. I’m a sucker for this type of music. They look very elegant. A little sass never hurt anybody. Three elements under review. Delightful skate. Score 101.16. 167.03
3 KAZAKOVA Maria / REVIYA Georgy
Very innovative thus far. Issue with opening set of twizzles - I guess not L4. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Dark music indeed but intriguing. On the verge of goth/steampunk. I liked it! It drew me in. Eerie. Score 97.25 164.33
4 TASCHLEROVA Natalie / TASCHLER Filip
Brother/sister team. A full bodied piece of music. They exude power. Very dramatic piece. The tempo changes. Spring in Buenos Aires. Argentine Tango. The build up through the performance was sublimely done. Score 101.10. 168.32
5 TURKKILA Juulia / VERSLUIS Matthias
Lyrical. Nice lift sequence. They create lovely lines. She has such joy on her face. Very light and airy skating. Nice slide. A couple of elements under review. An absolutely lovely skate. Score. 105.65. 173.88

Ukrainian nationals, ice dance
*Russian Cup final, men, perfect broadcast, event deciding about the nomination for Worlds* Me: Hm, naah, I’m not watching... *Ukrainian nationals, an obscure stream, only 3 teams participating* Me: Yess, gimme nowwwww! So, that’s how I roll :D
I really like rhythm dance as an event in general, but this (and last) season’s theme in particular. And it’s just so much fun to see which musicals and which atmosphere we’ll see at a particular event.
Here, it was a very classic choice. 42nd Street, Grease and Cheek to cheek. I love it.
Alexandra Nazarova/Maxim Nikitin - 42nd Street / Rene Aubry medley Their lifts and personality are in my opinion their biggest strenghts. I love lifts when the men is skating in sitting position, and this straight line lift with Maxim skating backwards is amazing. And at the end he just casually throws her over his shoulder! And another portion of amazing lifts comes in the free dance, especially the upside down lift on Maxim’s back. And I love their parallel slide.
Maria Golubtsova/Kyryl Belobrov - Cheek to cheek / ? Mystery flamenco ?  It’s their second season in seniors (though they’ve been on nationals podium as early as 2016) and they are doing quite well. They are in sync, they begin calmly in the free dance, then it gets more dramatic up to a dramatic slide.
Darya Popova/Volodymyr Byelikov - Grease / Beleiver, Can’t go on without you Ok, maybe I wouldn’t put their Grease on my personal podium of all the Grease programs out there, but it has everything a Grease program needs.  Their FD is something else, I love it. (I knew I had seen them somewhere because you don’t see such a costume every day, and yess, it was at Minsk Ice Star where they in fact won the competition). I really like this very dramatic program, including the lift ala Papadakis/Cizeron.

It’s that time of year again! I’ve included links to most of their routines; just click on the events next to their names for video. (Some are old or potato quality or both.)
Let me know if you have questions about anyone!
2019 Seniors
Tumblr media
Ksenia Klimenko - VT UB BB FX I think everyone knows Klimenko by now. She's a gorgeous gymnast, especially great on UB/BB, and actually seems to have some mental toughness. :O (But then, we thought the same about Melka.) Ksenia gives me the same "baby Aliya" vibes that Eremina did as a young junior, so I hope she can stay healthy and follow in their footsteps. :) Expect to see her at Jesolo, Junior Europeans, and the Youth Olympic Games next year.
Anastasia Agafonova - UB BB FX Agaf. Beautiful, beautiful gymnast - very similar to Komova - but already constantly broken. She has the same coaches as Sokova, so I think we all know how this is gonna end. But she has some impressive skills: inbars and piked jaeger on bars, side aerial+loso on beam, and full-in on floor. Great turns too. (Sorry about the shitty UB/BB videos - there are HD ones on FloPro if you have that.)
Daria Belousova - VT UB BB FX Belou is a nice little gymnast! She’s best on bars and beam, but shows AA potential as well, although she’s only competed UB/BB recently. I think she could end up a bit like Kapitonova; rapidly improving over the next couple years and contending for major teams. Slow and steady.
2020 Seniors
Tumblr media
Olga Astafyeva - VT UB BB FX Asta! I've loved this kid since she was 10 years old. She's got some great skills for her age - van Leeuwen, LOSO beam mount, full-in on FX, and she's training a DTY. You might notice her knees taped up; her coach said it's Osgood-Schlatter, so hopefully she'll grow out of it? Anyway, I like her because her style is like a Russian-American blend. In a good way. Pray for her.
Vladislava Urazova - VT BB FX Vlada! I remember liking her beam at 2014 Olympic Hopes, but she kinda dropped off the radar after that.. Anyway, we finally got to see her routines this summer, and it turns out she's fantastic! She's not the most expressive gymnast around, but she's insanely talented. Great FTY (competed a 1.5 once), LOSO mount and bhs+bhs+layout on beam, triple full and front double full on floor. She's also a lean mean spinning machine. There's no video of her bars, but she's weak there judging by scores. (NBD, it's not like Russia lacks barworkers.) Definitely going to Euros next year if she stays healthy.
Elena Gerasimova - VT UB BB FX Baby beam queen. Seriously: Onodi mount, FHS+front tuck, side aerial+loso. Her floor is great as well; she has a ripe-for-upgrade 2.5+punch front and recently debuted a full-in. Vault and bars are fine for her age, and should improve when she grows a bit. Overall, she's just lovely to watch. Your typical Russian junior heartbreaker.
Tumblr media
Irina Komnova - VT UB BB FX Irina is coached by Marina Nazarova, aka the coach of Afanasyeva and Semenova, aka that coach you see on the sidelines at every meet.  What stands out about Ira are her spins. And, well, that's about it. She's not BAD on any events, but she's not great anywhere either. She does have inbars, a bhs+bhs+layout on beam, and a full-in on floor - so the foundation is there for her to become a solid AAer - she's just not there yet.
Yana Vorona - VT UB BB FX Yana also has a big-name coach: Gennady Yelfimov. (Komova's coach, for those not familiar.) I have to say, she's made huge improvements since he started training her. Her best event is FX, where she has a great double arabian and whip+double tuck. Her beam is also great, she has a solid FTY, and bars... well. :’)  But again, improving under Yelfimov!! She's probably the "least best" of these girls, but she actually only made Tokyo eligibility by about 72 hours (born Dec 28, 2004). I almost hope they look beyond 2020 and into next quad. Either way, still a great gymnast with an almost Ukrainian style.
Arina Strukova - UB BB FX Strukova's not your typical Russian gymnast. She's very stocky and powerful, like Produnova. Her best event is beam, where she shows a ro+layout and side aerial+back tuck. She had a great bar routine at age 10, but hasn't really upgraded since, so we'll have to see how that event pans out for her. Floor is fine, cute choreo, and she has a decent FTY. (I'd link the video but it's on FloPro. :)) Anyway, I really like her and hope to see her get some assignments next year.
2021 Seniors (I can’t believe these kids are gonna be “real juniors” next year.)
Tumblr media
Viktoria Listunova - VT UB BB FX Listy is probably the most artistic junior since Bondareva. Floor is her best event, with great-but-simple tumbling (tho her bhs are a little sketchy), and an awesome Mustafina turn. Her beam is good too, with a lovely press handstand mount. VT and UB are fine for her age. Just watch her routines and you'll become obsessed too! I'm hoping she goes to WOGA Classic or Gymnix next year.
Nelli Audi - VT UB BB FX Nelli is your standard skill-chucking Russian junior. A triple full at age 10? Why the hell not. I'm honestly impressed she's still alive at this point. But she has started cleaning up! Beam is her standout event; she's been attemping a LOSO mount+BHS+LOSO series and a side+aerial back tuck. She also debuted a Mustafina turn+double turn on FX at Voronin Cup, because again, why not. I hope to see her at Round Lake a lot next year so she can focus more on polishing skills and less on trying to kill herself.
Maria Minaeva - VT UB BB FX Minaeva's a really strong AAer, and if I had to bet on one of these kids surviving the quad, it would be her - mainly because she's already doing difficult skills well, and doesn't have that "breakable waif" body type. Beam and floor are her strongest events. On beam, she shows a side aerial+loso, fhs+front tuck, and fantastic leaps. On floor, she tumbles a full-in and 2.5+front tuck. Vault is a solid tsuk full (4.8 SV), and bars - while definitely her weakest event - are still crazy good for a 12-year-old. Like she would def be the #2 senior in Romania. Anyway!! Hopefully we see her at Gymnix or WOGA Classic next year too.
Ok that’s it my friends. If you’d like to see more juniors, here are my youtube playlists:
2003s 2004s 2005s and younger
Again, any questions (about these gymnasts or just whatever idc I’m starved for human contact please come talk to me) just reply to the post or hit up my ask box/messenger. :) Also let me know if any of the links are screwed up.
