Who founded Maraga?

Callen Falls, Maraga:

Named after the Elven Goddess of the Emerald City, Smaragdi Feyda, the continent of Maraga Keskusta was established in the year 1693 by a fleeing Elven population. Thousand of elves had escaped their homeland of Nartinia, which had been at war since the year 1690. The name 'Maraga Keskusta' roughly translates to “the center emerald” in old world Finnish language. The name Nartinia translates to "guiding starlight" in OldeWord, the ancient language of the Nartinian High Elves.

In 1692, the first bit of land that was discovered and settled upon by the Nartinian natives was the District of Callen Falls. Maraga was established as a continent roughly one year later, in 1693. Named for the waterfall and river running through the main village, Callen Falls is also well-known for being the only Elven District to make use of human technology: it's powered by water mill.

The majority of elves settled here or one of two other villages that came to be known as Vineturn and Hyvale. They made an effort not to spread too far into the land past what they felt was viable. They were in search of farmland, resources, green, lush leaves, abundance, air, water, LIFE. The Nartinian Elves had experienced enough loss, therefore moved cautiously and accordingly.

As the years went on, the elves began to flourish alongside the others who had begun creating their own settlements surrounding the steadily growing Elven shires. As you can see, development moved quickly once word was out that the land of Maraga Keskusta was both habitable and profitable.

Wildcat Canyon and Grizzly Peak

After a couple of weeks riding along the ocean, it was a nice change to head inland. Today’s ride began and ended a couple of miles north of Orinda, in part because my parking spot kept my options open for a possible second loop to the northeast (Bear Creek - Alhambra Valley - Castro Ranch - San Pablo Dam Roads). As it was, this first loop was plenty and I’ll save the other loop for another trip.

At Inspiration Point, where Wildcat Canyon Road crosses the divide, I got distracted by Nimitz Way, which heads north along the ridge (this was not part of my original reconnaissance at all). It’s a narrow paved road (closed to vehicles) and I ended up following it until pavement ran out at an old Nike (not the shoes) missile site four miles north. What a wonderful rolling trail - with a few walkers, two other cyclists, a whole bunch of cows, and even a coyote. Everything was green, except for the fog bank over the bay.

After my leisurely eight-mile detour, I returned to Inspiration Point and headed west down Wildcat Canyon Road through Tilden Park until I reached Grizzly Peak Boulevard. Grizzly Peak winds south through residential neighborhoods near the top of the hills above Berkeley before climbing more seriously into open space on Grizzly Peak itself above the Lawrence Berkeley Labs. The views west towards the bay were hazy on account of the fog, but still impressive.

Eventually, Grizzly Peak Blvd. begins descending, crosses over CA-24 (which runs underneath the ridge in the Caldecott Tunnel) and eventually joins Skyline Boulevard above Oakland. Less than two miles on Skyline led to a left turn onto Pinehurst, which dropped very quickly back down the east side of ridge. There were almost no cars, but the steep grade, sharp corners, and chip seal surface discouraged riding to fast. There were redwood groves, a recently flooded creek (from January’s rains), and lots of dried mud and debris along the roadside.

I had a pleasant lunch sitting outside The Ranch House in Maraga, then pedaled the final 7-8 miles back through Orinda to the car. This last stretch was on a busy suburban road, but with great bike lanes.

at one station to 9 38/.. within the courtyard of picturesque old ruined                         fortress, surrounded by ruins of the stone houses and walls – we had walked down the long hill it had taken 7 horses to get us up in up and down hill road – picturesque – breakfast on our cold gateau de riz soon after leaving Maranza and just as I was putting all away a tremendous jolt knocked me against the sides of Kibitka and broke my comb -  [8 08/..] – green valley – good grass but not quite so good as the last stage – much cattle in the fine valley near Shemacha – camels, cattle, sheep, horses – the tails of the sheep weighing a pood a piece, all fat – used for all purpose where grease is required – very useful to the inhabitants – at the little river – broad bedded 2 streamy water at 12 25/.. and just in the mud when our off fore wheel came off – plenty of shepherds and people near to help us – delayed 20 minutes – had sent one of our 2 Cossacks before with our cards to the commandant desiring to know where we were to lodge – set off with one Cossack driving our leaders and 3 of escort one of whom (an officer – sous officier) after after about ¼ hour of queer awkward riding contrived to fall and pull his horse down with him, not much the worse apparently but turned back after saying something to our own Cossack sous officier about his arm being hurt, and we had no more of him – drove up to our assigned Logement and alighted at 1 ½ - lay down immediately on the sofa – 2 good rooms and a little anteroom; but our servants (George and the Cossack) took possession of our larger room leaving us the carpeted smaller room – the best house in Shemacha – a nice little square court of the middle is made into a garden – the proprietor rich and fat and civil, but speaks nothing but Armenian? Tartar and Russian is an Armenian – in about ½ hour all the baggage housed and A- and I lay down – I slept from about 2 ¼ to 6 – much the better for it – Took George and A- and I went out about 6 10/.. and came in at 7 – sauntered about the room – peeped in at some men weaving the silks of the country – crimson – [?] pretty good – about 2ft. wide at 2/50 en argent = 8/75 per archine of 28in.
