Bakers Tail

Here's another entry in the Small Moments au!

Ozpin had a little spring in his step, he was off to see one of his favorite people in town today! He’d made sure to dress well, which for him meant he spent about an hour going through various outfits till he found one he liked, which usually turned out to be the first outfit he picked.

He wore a white button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a brown knitted vest with knitted leaves, vines and flowers up the front and back, a tan belt, and plaid tan brown and dark brown pants with brown lace up boots. His hair was tied back in a loose braid with a dark brown cord. He felt dapper, but not so dapper that he was showing off, which was the exact look he was going for.

Meanwhile his sweet baby boy, 2 years old now, wore an off white shirt with bubble sleeves, an olive green overalls style dress with a red capped mushroom on the chest pocket, a red mushroom cap style hat, and little brown boots. His hair was messy, but had a few little braids tied with ribbons and colorful beads. He looked down right adorable. Especially since it was so sunny out, and his freckles were coming through strong as ever.

The day itself was quite nice, it was early fall, you could just smell the crisp coolness of the season through the dwindling heat of summer. Some trees were showing signs of the shift, bright reds and deep blues, golden yellows and royal purples, it was a gorgeous sight to behold. He was looking forward to the harvest on the farm, and to Oscar’s upcoming birthday!

He took a deep breath, enjoying the atmosphere. There would be fairs, celebrations, festivals, dances, fall was such a wonderful time. And his magic felt buzzier than usual, like there was always this access of energy he had to burn off. It put a spring in his step, and he was using more magic than usual and for more frivolous things. Just last night he went out at night and danced in the moon garden, light spells and ribbons of moonlight streaming around him. He thanked Tanja no one saw him.

A musical chime rang out, startling him from his thoughts, he blinked and looked around. He was at his destination. He was actually a bit proud of himself, it meant he’d truly been here long enough that he could find his way around without paying attention. Once upon a time he’d lost his way to Glynda’s when he’d only been across the street.

“Welcome! I’ll be out in a moment!” a sweet voice sang from somewhere in the back of the shop when he entered.

He grinned and straightened his vest as well as Oscar’s hat. He wanted to look nice for Magnolia after all! No particular reason… And he was glad he lived on his own now, or else he’d have to hear Glynda teasing about his “crush on the baker” when he didn’t have a crush!

“Welcome to the Sugar and Spice Bakery! What can I- Ozpin! Oh honey, why didn’t you say it was you!” Magnolia beamed, rushing around the corner to embrace the man. He tried to tamp down the rising blush on his cheeks as he hugged her back. “I didn’t want you to drop whatever you were working on for me.” he chuckled, hugging her a bit tighter before letting go.

She looked lovely as ever, her pale pink scales reminded him of cherry blossoms, the cream patterning along the hood was like the branches. Her eyes, a deep royal purple, with blue around the iris. She wore a sage green short sleeved dress, darker green leaves embroidered along the cuffs and edge of the skirt, dotted with little white flowers. Over it was a messy pink apron, through the flour and batter and other risks of the job on it, he could make out embroidered strawberries and cherries on the chest. “You look lovely as always.” he smiled, “And your scales look extra shiny today!”

“Thank you hon, I just shed a few days ago. I still have it if you like, I know the scales can be used in a lot of potions.” she offered kindly, smiling at Oscar as the little one giggled. “And might I say, your little cakepop is really growin’ up isn’t he?”

She lifted her tail to tickle the little one's belly, making him giggle adorably. Ozpin smiled at the sound. “He really is… I can’t wait to see who he becomes when he’s older. I hope he’s not half as much of a trouble maker as I was!”

“With any luck, he’ll be worse.” she teased, poking his belly playfully. He snorted and lightly swatted her hand. She laughed a musical laugh, one Ozpin always adored hearing. “So, what brings you here today? Need your hourly cocoa fix?”

“Ha ha ha. You’re soooo funny.” he replied with a deadpan face. “As a matter of fact… Yes. I do. I would also like to try some honey biscuits and a dozen snickerdoodles.”

“Comin’ right up sugar!” she chirped, slithering back around the counter to gather his items. “How’s things at the new place? You and the little ‘un doin alright?”

“We’re settling in. Oscar is having trouble sleeping on his own, but that’s probably partly to do with him having never been apart from me overnight before. He’s been getting better though! Last night he was in his room a whole 5 hours before coming to me!”

She beamed and added an extra cookie into the bag, like she always did. “That’s great! I’m so proud!”

“I am too. But I’ll be honest… I’m having trouble sleeping too.” he chuckled, “I’m usually out like a light, what with all the work I do on the farm. But… It’s harder when he’s not there. I get so…” “Anxious?” she finished, handing him the goodies. “It’s normal. Really. It happens to a lot of parents, especially single ones. And especially especially when they’ve been through as much as you have. So try to be good to yourself, hm? For me?”

“Well… if it’s for you.” he sighed, but gave her a playful wink. “Say, speaking of things for you. Would you care for some lunch, my treat?”

She laughed, bright and happy, and shook her head in a fond manner. “Oh Ozzy, you know I can never say no to that face. Give me a little to get things sorted here and clean up a bit, and I’ll meet you at Honey Bloom in… half an hour or so. Sound good?”“Sounds perfect. See you there.” he beamed. Bowing jovially, paying for his items, and leaving with an extra skip in his step. It’s a date.
