Attack on Titan : movie collection [DVD]
DVD Review
Tumblr media
It’s a desolate world of semi-industrial peasants confined behind massive, sky scraping stone walls. This fear riddled society the product of the Titans. Mute, distorted, caricatures of humankind, these gigantic creatures roam mindlessly yet are quick to seize any chance to gruesomely and mercilessly consume their prey.
Compelling and original, Attack on Titan backed up with a solid storyline and memorable characters that were also precariously expendable. Hajime Isayama’s manga began serialisation in 2009 and has joined the rarefied category of titles with a total circulation over 100 million. It’s also one of the younger and faster titles to achieve this. The fourth season of the anime is due this year. Spinoffs, game adaptations, rumours of a Hollywood remake, it has all the trappings of a successful franchise.
Another trapping of a hit franchise is the fanbase - and the fans savaged these 2015 live action film adaptations almost as brutally as any Titan. However, if slavish reproduction isn’t an imperative then on their own merits, the films are perfectly watchable. They are, after all, standalone entries in the franchise. Without the burden of preconceptions, the impact on a viewer who is fresh to the mythos will be all the more pronounced. Imperfections would include the penchant for actors to deliver profound lines looking intensely into the camera or the Mikasa actress’ choice of running style.
Curiously, the film team even had to contend with Isayama specifying that some aspects of the film be different from the manga. Altogether though, the films have made a remarkably coherent effort at condensing hundreds of chapters of source material. Iconic scenes are spectacularly rendered and likewise the signature uniforms and equipment costuming are faithfully realised.
"Japan, present day. The sudden arrival of the Titans - mysterious, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour human beings one after the other - brings mankind to the brink of extinction. Fast-forward 100 years. What remains of the human population now survives in relative peace behind massive walls erected in defence against the Titans. Yet once again, that peace is shattered when a Colossal Titan, measuring over 50 meters tall, smashes through the wall and allows a horde of other Titans to enter. Why did Titans appear? Why do people continue to fight? The last counter attack to save human civilisation is about to begin"--Container.

02/9‘The Palace of Illusions’ by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s bestselling 2008 novel ‘The Palace of Illusions’ is a retelling of the Mahabharata through Draupadi’s point of view. But unlike the traditional tale, this book depicts Panchali as a strong, resilient and courageous woman. It traces her journey from the time of her birth from a holy fire to her lonely childhood days, from her friendship with Krishna to marriage with the five Pandavas, and her secret attraction to her husband’s enemy. In ‘The Palace of Illusions’, Divakaruni gives Panchali a voice and narrates her side of the story.

Aditya Iyengar has penned two books in the Mahabharata spin-offs which are set in the backdrop of the Kurukshetra War. His debut book ‘The Thirteenth Day: A Story of the Kurukshetra War’, as the title suggests, is a reimaginging of the Kurukshetra war between the Pandavas and Kauravas. It was on the thirteenth day of the war that three great warriors– Yudhisthira, his nemesis Radheya, and Abhimanyu – collide, changing history forever. The second book in the Kurukshetra War series ‘The Broken Sun’ tells what happened after the thirteenth day of the war. While Arjuna is grieve-stricken at the loss of his son Abhimanyu and Yudhistira is trying to keep his family together, the Kauravas are led by Guru Drona and Radheya and they want to bring an end to the war.
