T20 Match Scheduled in Indore : भारत-दक्षिण अफ्रीका T-20 सीरीज का एक मैच इंदौर में!

Indore : क्रिकेट प्रेमियों के लिए ये जानकारी उत्साहित करने वाली है कि भारत और दक्षिण अफ्रीका के बीच टी-20 सीरीज का एक मुकाबला इंदौर को अलॉट हुआ है। 3 अक्टूबर को इंदौर में मैच होने की संभावना है। इंदौर को सीरीज का एक मैच अलॉट हो गया, लेकिन मुकाबला कब होगा, इसका फैसला अपेक्स काउंसिल की बैठक में होगा। इंदौर को अलॉट हुए मैच को लेकर एमपीसीए को जानकारी मिल चुकी है, लेकिन अधिकारी बीसीसीआई की तरफ से होने वाली आधिकारिक घोषणा का इंतजार कर रहे हैं। इंदौर में इससे पहले साउथ अफ्रीका की टीम 14 अक्टूबर 2015 को वन-डे मैच खेलने आई थी। इस मैच में एमएस धोनी ने 92 रन की पारी खेली थी। यह मैच इंडिया ने 22 रन से जीता था। भारत ने पहले बल्लेबाजी करते हुए 247 रन का स्कोर साउथ अफ्रीका को दिया था। अफ्रीका की टीम 225 रन ही बना सकी थी। अभी तक इंदौर के होलकर स्टेडियम को दो इंटरनेशनल टी-20 मैचों की मेजबानी का अवसर मिला है। पहला टी-20 मैच 22 दिसंबर 2017 को और दूसरा 7 जनवरी 2020 को खेला गया था। दोनों ही मैच भारत ने श्रीलंका टीम के खिलाफ खेले थे। होलकर स्टेडियम में भारतीय टीम का रिकॉर्ड भी शानदार रहा है, यहां कोई भी मैच वह नहीं हारी है। टी20 में कप्तान रोहित शर्मा के नाम रिकॉर्ड भी दर्ज है, उन्होंने यहां लंका के खिलाफ 43 गेंदों में 118 रनों की शतकीय पारी भी खेली थी। इन दो मैचों के बाद होलकर स्टेडियम को कोई इंटरनेशनल मैच की मेजबानी नहीं मिली थी। जबकि, यह स्टेडियम वनडे, टेस्ट और आईपीएल की मेजबानी कर चुका है। पौने तीन साल बाद इंदौर के दर्शक होलकर स्टेडियम में फिर इंटरनेशनल मैच देख सकेंगे।

Every now and then I am so angry at the loss of my local community centre.

Up until my early 20s, the local community centre was in an old secondary school - It had been replaced by two others after a new estate had been built, then turned into an Approved School, then finally closed - but still belonging to the local authority, so they turned this 1000-pupil school, with an assembly hall with a stage, two gymnasiums, a dance studio, dozens of classrooms and a canteen, into a massive community centre. This wasn't unique either, there was another one similar to it on the other end of the estate, also in an old school (this time, a Victorian one with no field but a big yard), and one in a purpose-built community centre building, of comparable size, about a mile away, and one in an old drill hall maybe two miles away. But, this one was "ours".

And pretty much everything happened there. Every member of my extended family had *something* that they did there, so there was always a chance of running into some auntie or second-cousin and a bunch of their friends too, so a two-hour evening class might end with us all walking up the road to the workingmen's club for a few pints after.

And it wasn’t just sports clubs either (Though, there were sports clubs, both leagues where you could compete and classes where you could learn), there were things like mother and baby groups, support and befriending groups for various people, amateur dramatics (both to play and regular shows for the public to attend), a pictures club that showed classic films on a huge projector screen, loads of language learning ranging from "Spanish for holidays" via "Hindi for your british-born grandkids to get some immersion" and "German for (Local German tech firm)'s employees who intend to work abroad" to "Classical Kurmanji for poets", straightforward further education and night classes where you could learn typing or carpentry or study for your A-Levels... Basically, because the building was vast and already owned by the council for the good of the people living on the estate, it didn't cost much to rent a room for an hour a week and run a club, so all sorts of people would do it. There were the stalwarts that always ran (Children's tap dancing, football, karate, photography, knitting circle) but effectively anyone with £12 per week to spare could hire a room for an hour, run off some posters on the photocopier (2p per page, 5p colour) and have a club - And since it was all in one place, people would read the poster on the signboard and already know where the club was and how to get there - In fact, if they were already here at 5 for Watercolour For Beginners, there was no real reason NOT to hang around for half an hour afterwards, get a coffee in the cafe, then try out Labyrinthine Meditation at 7. All the classes were cheap (the most shocking expensive one was black-and-white photography, at £3.50 a session, because you had to chip in for the chemicals to develop your films and print your prints, and they had sole use of a store cupboard as a darkroom) and so was the cafe and the very small lounge bar.

I moved away pushing 20 years ago and I miss it to pieces, and now it's closed down and the land has been sold off to develop into flats. And the people living there won't have it, and the town I live in now doesn't have anything like it, our village hall is a single room and it sold its cricket pitch decades ago. And with just one room there is a lot more pressure on only having the most popular clubs run, the ones guaranteed to run for 12-week terms with at least 15 participants per session, with "broad appeal".

I just wish there were still more of these in the UK. We have lost a whole lot in losing it, and it remained popular right up to closure... But local authorities are skint and land isn't cheap and maintaining these mid-century buildings that are either falling apart or full of asbestos is expensive.

But think how different our queer culture could be, if this kind of place still existed commonly and universally all over the country!

Is Kashmir getting on the South Asia’s music map?

Faheem Abdullah and Rauhan Malik’s recent song ‘Ishq’ from ‘Lost; Found’ album has immortalised the work of Amir Ameer, a poet from Rahim Yar Khan, a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

It is breaking the internet and becoming a trending meme song. The song is also bringing closer music lovers across India and Pakistan, who are raving about Ameer’s mesmerising poetry and soothing voice of Abdullah and Malik. ‘Ishq’ may not be the best thing to have happened to the Kashmir music industry but it certainly has attracted traction and could play its part in putting Kashmir on South Asia’s music map.

Though boasting of rich musical instrumentals, magical voices, and insightful poetry, Kashmir’s music industry has suffered over the decades due to the Kashmiri language’s limited reach as only 6.8 million people speak Kashmiri. However, the experimentation of composing Urdu songs by young Kashmiri singers like Abdullah and Malik and a crop of new-generation Kashmiri singers is making the canvas bigger for them as Urdu boasts 71.29 million native speakers while the language is also understood by 571.3 million native Hindi speakers.

Like Abdullah and Malik, someone who took this experimentation to new heights in Kashmir was Yawar Abdal, a new-age Kashmiri singer who, in 2017, experimented with his single, ‘Tamana’, a multilingual song in Kashmiri, Urdu, and Persian languages based on the poetry of three legendary poets: Mehjoor (Kashmiri), Mirza Ghalib (Urdu), and Amir Khusru (Persian). The song became an instant hit on the internet. Abdal’s best work to date though might not be ‘Tamama’ but a lesser hit ‘Inshallah’. It is an artistic genius: multilayered and ambiguous and shakes a listener out of placid.

Abdal may not have the best voice among the new-age Kashmiri singers but he is heads and shoulders above others when it comes to crafting his work. Like his unconventional music, the visualisation in his music videos touches raw nerves and asks questions that only great art can.

Canadian pop artist Grimes says, “Only art ever saved me, everything else has betrayed me.” And Abdal’s music and music videos never betray your trust.

Jyotsna Bharti in ‘Mixing Old Melody with New Melancholy: Meet Kashmir’s Fresh Folksingers’ writes, “At a time when youngsters elsewhere are de-rooting themselves and trying westerns, many new-age Kashmiri musicians and singers are popularising their roots. Following the footsteps of their forefathers, they’re finding solace in Rabab, pleasures in poetries and life in mountains…”

These new-age Kashmiri singers like Ali Saifuddin, Mohammad Muneem Nazir, Saim Bhat, Ishfaq Kawa, Rasiq Khan, Waqar Khan, Kabul Bukhari, Arsalan Nizami, Ubair Taj Beigh, Baabarr, Mudacer, Shazia Bashir, Aabha Hanjura, Vibha Saraf, and Rahul Wanchoo wear Kashmir on their sleeves, sport Kashmiri shawls and Pherans, use traditional musical instruments, and shoot music videos in the picturesque locales.

They have taken a leaf out of the book of their ancestors like Raja Begum, Shamima Dev Azad, Ghulam Hassan Sofi, Abdul Rashid Hafiz, Kailash Mehra Sadhu, and Neeraja Pandit and popularised it among the new generations of Kashmir offering them music from their roots and educating them that Kashmiri music might be as rich as the Bollywood and western music and much like the Punjabi music could carve out an identity of its own.

Kashmiri music represents its rich melodic heritage. It has played a significant role in shaping and expressing its cultural identity. Kashmiri music has served as a powerful tool to preserve Kashmiri traditions, values, and stories.

Kalhana in his magnum opus ‘Rajatarangini’ wrote in the 12th Century CE that Kashmiri musical instruments have extremely aged roots. A 4th-century CE tile found during excavation from Harwan shows the impression of a female musician playing a drum. The other person is shown playing a veena. King Bhiksacara (1120-21 CE), who himself played these instruments was fond of ‘Chhakri’ (folk choral singing) which continues to be popular in Kashmir.

According to Kalhana, folk musical instruments like earthen pots and brass vessels were used by Kashmiri people from very early times. Prominent musical instruments played in Kashmir include Surnai, Santoor, Saitar, Nai, Tumbaknari, Noot, and Rabab.

Tumkanari (goblet drum) is usually used by womenfolk on occasions like engagement and marriage functions. In Central Asia Tumkanari called Tumbakh or Tunbak is now made of wood while Kashmir maintains its originality and the musical instrument is still made of baked clay. Similarly, the use of Noet (earthen pot) in Kashmiri music is mentioned in Nilmata Purana as well as Kalhana’s Rajtarangini.

Kashmiri music also has influences from the Central Asian music.

“We even borrowed their music and instruments,” historian Prof Fida Muhammad Hassnain wrote in ‘Common Cultural Links between Kashmir and Central Asia’.

According to B C Deva, the string instruments, Rabab and Sarangi, came to Kashmir with the influence of Muslims.

While some historians state that the most popular instrument used in folk music in Kashmir is the Rabab borrowed from Persia, others suggest it was adopted from Afghanistan centuries ago and has been an integral part of Kashmiri music culture ever since.

These musical instruments have also played a key role in the evolution of Kashmiri Sufiana music.

The instruments used by the Sufiana musicians are quite different from those used in Indian classical music and Kashmiri folk music. The prominent instruments include Santoor, Kashmiri Saitar, Saaz-e-Kashmir, and Tabla.

Shabir Ahmad Mir in his paper ‘Mystical Music: Safeguarding Sufiana Mausiqi – a Vanishing Art Form of Kashmir’ for the International Journal of Intangible Heritage writes, “Sufiana mausiqi (music) continued to flourish during the reign of Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak (1579-1586). His queen, Habba Khatun, is often credited with introducing a maqam ‘Rast-Kashmiri’ by making a little structural variation on maqam Rast-Farsi. Chak and his queen were great patrons of music as well as musicians themselves, and they devoted their time to embellishing Kashmiri classical music. Rast-Kashmiri still forms the most popular maqam of the Sufiana repertory.”

Ezhilarasan is the oldest child of a wealthy Tamil business owner and his highschool sweetheart. When Ezhil was born, it was clear to his parents that this marriage they’d both agreed to wasn’t going to work out. They separated when he was only a few weeks old, and his father remarried pretty soon after that. As a result: Ezhil was always an older sibling. They led the pack, and the pack soon became five in total, as his father Nandil’s newest wife bore him four kids. That marriage was also not meant to last however, and before Ezhil was even ten years old, his father moved to the UK, where he started a new family. So during the holidays and special occasions when the new family flew over, Ezhil’s pack was even bigger, as the Bharath family grew from five to nine kids.

Ezhil had everything he could ever wish for: enough food to fill his belly, enough company to ensure he never felt lonely, and his father’s intellect. He also knew he could become anything he wanted to be, so he did. Ezhil pursued art, never at a school; however, he used his father’s contacts and advice to set up his own collective. Life was pretty good. He made enough money to live off and he could always fall back on his father if he needed to.

And he needed to. Five years ago, while enroute from Madurai to Goa, Ezhil got into a traffic accident in the middle of the night. He doesn’t remember much of it anymore, but he woke up the next day in the hospital, high fever and severe hallucinations. His father, worried as he was about his eldest, flew him over to the UK as soon as he was good enough to fly. Luck would have it that the city his father had moved to was called Fenrir’s Wood, and the doctors there definitely knew what to do with him. He got the welcome package, the lessons, and the introduction to living in a British city, all pretty quickly. His father found him a job, and he found himself a goal. He joined Glover Pack, but realised quickly that despite how interesting the pack sounded: it wasn’t how he would run things.

If he were running things, it would all be much smoother. But nobody was going to endorse a stranger, so instead, behind the scenes, Ezhil has been working on starting his own pack.

Ezhil identifies as bi-gender, while on most days he feels like a man, in general he identifies as agender while leaning masculine. He does not mind being referred to as a man and accepts masculine words: brother, son, etc.
